  • Clean install Snow Leopard and transfer files from Time Machine?

    Hello,
I have a computer that is getting s fresh clean install of Snow Leopard. I know how to go about doing this. However, I want to be able to transfer the files back using Time Machine. The Time Capsule has backups from 3 computers. How do I select the right computer files from the backup? The Mac Pro also has a second hard drive intsalled. Is it best to wipe it clean and then load the data from the Time Machine?
    Thanks!

If you have a second HD with nothing on it, why not do the fresh install on that, then use Setup Assistant to bring over all the files from the HD you've been backing up to TM rather than  TM itself? That way, you have the most direct transfer and a backup of the original too.

  • Remote Install Snow leopard to macbook pro from windows xp using airport??

I have a problem... I finally bought my snow leopard, but I can not install it because my cd drive broke. so... I have a PC with XP on it, so I am trying to remote install it... I rebooted my mac and held the "Option" key and a list of one disk "Machintosh HD" came up. I noticed that the airport selection thing wasn't there... I don't know what's wrong with it. Do I need to setup a computer-to-computer network to do that or can I use my internet Wi-Fi.

You think that be booting the MBP holding the option key you will have the PC optical drive as a bootable option come up? Won't happen, won't work.

  • MacBook 2.1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz 2GB Late 2006. The harddrive died. Replaced with a WD 320. Have used TimeMachine with a WD160 for several months. Tried to install Snow Leopard and use restore from the TimeMachine backup. Will not start.

Harddrive died and replaced it with a new WD 320. Used Snow Leopard to intall OS Disk Utility to Restore from TimeMachine. It appears to have 'pasted' the backup from TimeMachine on to the WD320. Tried to start OS and it says that WD320 is a backup and won't run from it. What do I do?

I re-reinstalled Snow Leopard and restarted. It is working fine!!!!

  • TS2951 after installing snow leopard 10.6.3 from tiger 10.4.11 everything upgraded and opens correctly except the dock. It is still running with the old dock.

help, the original HD (10.5.8 leopard) crashed and i replace it with one a little smaller HD (10.4.11 tiger). It was real jerky and i couldn't play a lot of my games. Since I had always wanted to upgrade to snow leopard anyway I did. Always wanted to get the app store. Still don't have it! what did i do wrong or better yet, how to i fix it?
up graded from 10.4.11 with 10.6.3 - everything is great except it is using the old dock. I don't have the download icon, the utility icon the app store icon in my doc. - and when looking in finder i don't find the app store application - not real sure what else or where else to look.

  • Fresh install snow leopard - backup question

    So here's the scoop;
My 2008 iMac is slowing down. What is the most efficient way to backup settings and files to an external drive, wipe the drive and run a fresh install for maximum speed?
I installed snow leopard as an upgrade from leopard on the day it was out and love it, I just like to start from scratch from time to time and I have a lot of files right now. I basically just want to backup all the files and preferences as they stand now, and copy it back onto a fresh install.

    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions.
    2. Clone the system to an external hard drive.
    3. Boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat the drive.
    4. Install Snow Leopard.
    5. Restore your data from the external backup.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive.
Source means the internal startup drive.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

How can i install snow leopard on my mac G5 using a command line and booting from an external usb rom, since my disk i have is not a bootable media

    Hi.
You simply can't. Snow Leopard is compiled in Intel binary only.
    Good Luck.

  • My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard (via my MacBookPro), either from the HD or DVD drive.  Can't get it to run Hardware Test.  Disk Utility says disk OK - files are there. What can I do?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

After installing a new hard drive can I install snow leopard directly from snow leopard disc. Or do I have to install previous versions first. iMac 7.1 (2007) 2.8ghz

You can install directly, assuming the disk is newer than your computer and not designed for a different Mac, but doing so won't install iLife.

  • What's the best route to install Snow Leopard from 10.5.8

I followed the instructions but the installation killed safari, my ethernet connection, my local apache and my mysql server. I don't know what else was killed when I installed snow leopard, but that was enough to make me decide to try restoring from time machine - which worked out perfectly. A friend suggested I do a scratch install - does anyone on the board have any thoughts? Figured I would reach out in an effort to keep from loosing another day.
Should I wait until 10.6.1 comes out?

Do you have an external drive for making a clone of your 10.5.8 system? If not, I'd get one. Then, I'd make the clone. Next, I do an erase and install of SL on my internal drive. At the end you will be "allowed" to restore your apps, settings, and data from the clone. If things don't work out, then I much rather restore a clone to my internal than to rely on Time Machine--although Time Machine befriended you once. I'd use SuperDuper to make the clone; this program is completely up to date.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard and boot from software RAID 1 (mirror)?

I have a Mac Pro (quad core 2.66 GHz) on order for my office workstation. Yeah, I know new ones are probably coming out early next year but due to budget and upcoming projects I need one now. What I'd like to do is replace the pre-installed 640GB drive with two 1 TB drives and mirror them. The 640GB drive will be redeployed to another machine in the office. Can I boot from the Snow Leopard install DVD, go to Disk Utility, setup a RAID 1 with the two drives, install Snow Leopard to the mirror and then boot off the mirror set?
I've searched and found offhand comments to the effect that installing to and booting from a software mirror is OK, but I'd like to know for sure that it's OK. Any experience that you have with such a configuration would be nice to hear.

Yes. But before you do read the following:
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs. Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?

  • I installed Snow Leopard and now I can't import pictures from iphone or memory chip.

I installed Snow Leopard to my Mac Book Pro and when I went to import pictures from my Iphone 4 to the Mac I received a message that it could not read the files.  I also tried importing pictures from my camera's memory card and got the same error.  This hadn't happened before the installation of Snow Leopard, what could it be?

update SnowLeopard to its latest version, v 10.6.8, and alongside that also your iTunes to v10.5
Use disk utility to repair the OS permissions after all updates are in place.
