Installing Snow Leopard but also Boot Camp or Parallels

I have a 2006 MacBook (Intel, core duo) and have a 320 gb HD, 2 gb RAM, running 10.5.8.
I'd like to install Snow Leopard but also would like to partition my HD and install Boot Camp (or Parallels 4.x - I have that version, fully paid etc. but not version 5 of Parallels. Or should I move to Parallels 5 if I move to Snow Leopard?)
I have a full bootable backup (2) on FW400 LaCie External HD's. I have the SL Original DVD.
What is the best way to do this? At present I have 60 gb free space (about 20% of the 297 gb formatted total space available).

Oh, yes - I'm anticipating a new MacBook Pro 13" any time now (Thought the new ones would be out by now!) - Well it will come with SL installed; and I will order one with a 500 gb HD (or larger if available then). Can I migrate my current MB data and files to the new MacBook using migration assistant? But what if I want a partition for BootCamp and Windows (XP likely as I have that)--? Should I partition the new MBP HD first (can I partition it without erasing everything?

Frankly, were you to run Parallels 5 you should have more RAM installed, but your model cannot support more than the 2 GBs you have installed now. You would be better off running Windows via Boot Camp on that machine. However, the new computer will have 4 GBs of RAM installed so it is better suited to running Windows via Parallels. And, yes, if you run Snow Leopard you need Parallels 5.x both for compatibility and performance reasons.
Open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the wide button on the left to print out the documentation. Read it carefully before using Boot Camp Assistant. Yes, you partition the drive without erasing it, but you can only have one Windows and one OS X partition on the same drive. Otherwise it makes no difference when you use Boot Camp.
Your XP must be a retail installer with SP2 and only the 32-bit version. You cannot use an OEM installer that came with another computer.

You need to buy 10.6.x DVD or flash drive (w/ Lion or Mountain Lion).
Check Apple Store or call.

I'm trying to reinstall it because about six months ago a friend at the time crashed it and it has been stuck in white screen of death since then. and I'm trying to get my computer to work again.

My iMac will not boot through Snow Leopard but will boot through Windows OS

My 2010 iMac will not boot in Snow Leopard, only Windows. Have tried reinstalling Snow leopard a few times and works only for a couple of minutes before freezing and doesnt reboot. Windows works perfect. Snow leopard just doesnt want to boot up past the Apple Logo. It was working fine one day and the next day it froze up and was able to reboot back into Snow Leopard but kept freezing. Now it doesnt load at all into Mac OS.

Possible scenarios:
1: The 10.6.3 SL retail disk is bad, it happens.
2: Your not using the 10.6.3 SL retail disk but one from another machine which doesn't have the drivers for that machine.
3: Your optical drive is funky or some other hardware issues.
4: Your trying to install 10.6 onto a PowerPC based Mac, no can do.
5: Your not using a wired keyboard for boot key commands, have some other hardware conflicts.
Possible solutions.
1: Copy the SL 10.6.3 disk using Disk Utility to another DVD, the error checking may resolve the original disk's issue.

3: Call Apple for a new 10.6.3 disk (and make copies for backup before Apple discontinues selling it)
If your upgrading to 10.6 to get to 10.6.8 to upgrade to 10.7, be warned of this:
1: Your 10.5 software will not work in 10.7, no more Rosetta or PPC based code.
2: Your hardware will not qualify if it's a 32 bit Intel Core Duo, also you may experience slowdowns in performance over 10.6 (10.6 is the fastest OS X version for Intel Macs) in older Intel hardware (I suggest Early 2011 Mac's and later only for Lion)
3: Mountain Lion 10.8 is reportingly coming out this summer and will not run on a lot of older Intel based Mac's because of heftier graphics requirements.
4: 10.6 has the widest range of current avaialble software and drivers for third party hardware.
My advice, stick with 10.6.8 and stay there, buy a new Mountain Lion machine after this summer. Skip Lion completely.

Help! Lion has basically paralyzed my system. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to open a folder, to open Applications, Safari freezes and won't let me sign into the forums (I'm on a different computer). I tried to re-install Snow Leopard, but no go!

Your upgrade must have failed. Unless you very very recently upgraded Lion, as in the last hour or two. Then you need to go to System Preferences and Energy Saver and stop it from automatically sleeping. Let it sit overnight. It could be spotlight re-indexing your disk and slowing you way way down.
If that doesn't work then you can re-install Lion cleanly. You need to finish backing up your data. Then make a Lion USB flash boot disk or DVD. Hold option key when you boot and select the USB or DVD drive. Run Disk Utility and delete then recreate the partition, exit Disk Utility and install Lion. Then restore your applications and data.

Might be related, if your hard drive is a 1TB drive,it could be a Seagate drive.
The drives are known to fail and your iMac maybe covered for free replacement under the Apple's Seagate hard drive replacement program until April 12 of this year.
I Believe the 2009 models are covered under this replacement warranty.

Installing Windows 7 RC1 with Boot Camp AND Parallels?

I have a 24" iMac (2009 model) and have successfully installing Windows 7 RC1 using Boot Camp. No problems at all and everything is working fine. But now I'm contemplating purchasing Parallels and using Windows 7 in a window.
I just need to know the steps involved and how this works. First I purchase and install Parallels. Then I run it and somehow tell it to use my Boot Camp partition for the VM, right? In this way, I'm assuming I don't actually have to install Windows 7 again or make another partition, right? Once I get the VM installed, then I can either boot to Windows 7 from startup OR boot from within Mac OS using Parallels and it would be the same?
If I can do it this way, can anyone point me to step-by-step instructions on how to choose the right settings in Parallels? I have found instructions for installing Windows 7 using Boot Camp and Parallels separately, but not how to use the Boot Camp install for the VM in Parallels.

Wow, it was much easier than I thought it would be! Downloaded the trial of Parallels. Installed it and pointed it to my Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 installed on it. And minutes later, I'm up and running with Windows 7 in Parallels. Sound didn't work at first, but after I did a Windows Update, it installed the correct driver and now everything is working great. I can't believe how smooth this thing runs within Leopard. I allocated 1GB of RAM for WIndows 7 and it's seems fine so far, but I really haven't run any resource-intensive apps yet.

Upgraded Leopard -- Snow Leopard; What About Boot Camp?

I upgraded Leopard on my iMac to Snow Leopard, and didn't even think about my Boot Camp partition. I guess I would have assumed the installer would have seen I had this partition and offered to update to Boot Camp 3.0, but when I checked last night in Windows, I see I'm still running Boot Camp 2.1. I ran Apple Software Update in Windows and wasn't presented with any Boot Camp updates.
What is the procedure for updating to Boot Camp 3.0?

the BootCamp Assistant in OSX is updated to version 3.0 !
To update the BootCamp Windows Drivers and the Control Panel insert the OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD while in Windows and the update should start automatically.

Also a good idea befor installing the Driver Update is to make a backup of your Windows using WinClone or at least making a 'System Restore Point' just in case.

Everytime i place the Snow Leopard DVD in & restart & press "C" after around 5 mins i get a screen propt saying unable to reinstall apple operating system

Do you have another drive you can install SL on? If so, you can try installing SL on a 2nd drive, boot from that drive and use Migration Assistant to move your Apps and Data back from your Lion disk. I have not tried this, but see no reason why it should not work.

Access Snow Leopard Folders from Boot Camp running Vista

I have a MacBook with a three partitioned hard drive. 2 partitions are HFS+, 1 for Snow Leopard and 1 for storage of my music, photos and video files etc. The 3rd is a Boot Camp partition on which I have Windows Vista installed. I find that I can access every folder and file on my storage partition except for those in the music folder. When ever i I try to access this folder I get an error window stating: "element not found"
This is irritating as I would like Windows Media Player to access the music in this folder like it can with the video files stored in a Folder on the same partition.
If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

Control all the file sharing on the Mac OS X side. Otherwise you run risking damaging Mac OS X's permissions. I've seen Mac OS 9 machines really run Mac OS X amuck because of their lack of knowledge of Mac OS X's structure.

Yes thye will be BUT, and that us a BIG BUT, if you are now using some older programs that were written to work on Power PC Macs with Rosetta on Intel CPU Macs those program will no longer work.
So check into what program versions you are using and make sure they will all work with Lion.

Clean installed Snow Leopard, but Lion Time Machine backup was not recognized.

I erased the Macintosh HD and clean installed the Snow Leopard. But when I try to use the Time machine backup to recovery my documents, the external hard disk can not even be recognized. It says "To use this disk, connect it to a Mac with Mac OS X v10.7 or later. The format of the disk was created using Lion which can not be read by Snow Leopard." The fact is that the format of the disk is Mac OS Extended (journaled) and was indeed created by Lion from windows format. So how can I read the disk using Snow Leopard? Thanks.

I it a general problem, affecting e.g. a Mac with multiple partitions. I get the same with trying to mount 10.7 from 10.6.8.

Re-installing Snow Leopard

My computer's been giving me a series of problems (repeatedly unsuccessful software updates, irregular/now non-existent iphone sync, issues with VMware, etc) so I now want to re-install Snow Leopard and start fresh. I've been using Time Machine to back up my files and applications on an external hard drive.
If I re-install Snow Leopard from the boot disc and choose to not restore from Time Machine backup (i.e., just install a clean copy of OS X), will I still be able to retrieve my files from time machine onto the newly installed OS? I've already tried the "restore from Time Machine" option (from a backup well before the problems arose) and that didn't resolve the issues I was having so I don't want to just restore and have the same problems come up again. Any thoughts?? thanks!

yes. if you want to bypass either +setup assistant+ or +migration assistant+, that's the way to go.
however, it is not recommendable to migrate applications that way. especially apps that come by way of an installer put files in various locations of your HD. unless you know exactly where those files are, you are better off reinstalling apps the usual way.
in fact, what i would do is this:
once the new OS is installed, i would migrate account(s), network settings, and documents using the setup assistant. then i would reinstall apps manually.
i did this not too long ago when i migrated from my old powerbook G4 to my new mini. since i migrated everything but apps, the pref files for the applications came over and i didn't even have to re-enter serial numbers.
