Installing snow leopard, got "The application Install Mac OS X quit unexpectedly"

Installing show leopard from the install disk on white MacBook (2,0 GHz), got "The application Install Mac OS X quit unexpectedly".  What's wrong?

Haven't a clue, but the machine didn't like something. Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try reinstalling again.

  • Install Snow Leopard without the Application DVD

I can only find one install DVD ( iMac Mac OS X Install DVD - version 10.6.6 ) and I rememberd something about two DVDs.
I found some pictures in google where you can see my DVD the install one and an Application DVD for iLife, which I don't need.
Can I use the one DVD I have to reinstall Snow Leopard, if I don't need iLife, or is there a second DVD I need.
The window looks just like this one: http://www.dinke.net/blog/en/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/install_dvd.png
But the availiable space is not ~336 but 20mb, I don't know if that matters?

That disc should be sufficient.  You only need iLife if you use iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie etc.  The third disc mentioned is probably iWork ... for pages, numbers etc.   Double check by reading first ...  Minimum specs for Snow Leopard.

And if you go ahead, before you start upgrading, back up your files.
Once you have upgraded to Snow Leopard you will need to apply the Combo updater.   Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1  and follow with a software update to pick up any later security updates.
But you say in your profile details below your post that you have 10.6.6. ?????   Are you aware of Machine specific discs?

Sorry, but that is correct. You need Snow Leopard to sync your phone and the latest version of iTunes and you old G5 cannot run that.

If your MacBook Pro had Snow Leopard on it at one time then sure. (Early 2011 or earlier)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Obviously choose the second partition to install into. It has to be OS X Extended journaled formatted in Disk Utility (BootCamp software makes it a MSDOS/FAT32 formatted partition if you used that to partition with)
If it's a Early 2011 or Late 2011 that came with 10.7, it's possible, but it's not easy.

  • Installed Snow Leopard, got 10.5.6 Instead!

    Hi
A bit confused. I bought the SNow Leopard disc and ran an erase an install. Went through the motions of re-registering everything, but it turns out is installed 10.5.6 (I was on 10.5.8 before).
Have tried installing again (not as a clean install) and it has done the same thing.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks!
    Sam

I know it sounds insane, but it really is true..
The disc is definitely a Snow Leopard one and says 'Install Snow Leopard' on the icon.
The install and erase option was only available when I restarted using the dvd as the startup disc.
It did install Snow Leopard on my MacBook (I only tried after it failed on the iMac to see if it would work) - so I am thinking it is my computer rather than the disc.
I tried again and it actually appears that the installation of Leopard is stopping short. The bar gets to around 20% and then the computer restarts When it restarts it gives the language selection pane and tries to continue the installation - but for Leopard!
I read somewhere that the installer will backout of the process if it encounters an error, but I like everyone else don't understand how it then installs 10.5.6.
Does anyone know what I would need to wipe everything and start again?

  • Can I install Snow Leopard over Lion to install old software after hard drive crashed?

My hard drive crashed and I lost everything.  I have a new hard drive, but when the repair shop installed my operating system, they installed Lion and I no longer have my prior updates.  My computer had been updated a few times.  I have a lot of software that only can be installed up to 10.7 such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, Office Mac 2011, etc.  I was wondering if I installed Snow Leopard over Lion, would I lose Lion?  Should I install Snow Leopard and then Lion again?  I don't want to damage my like new computer and I don't want to have to go out and buy all new software.  Is there a solution?  Thanks in advance!

Sounds complicated!  If I repartition the drive and install Snow Leopard onto the blank volume, will Lion still be there?  Or, will the computer basically have two operating systems that I have to go back and forth from.  Is this something a novice like myself can do?

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on the latest Macbook Pros? (the ones pre-loaded with Lion)

The problem and solution is pretty simple, I just want to know if anyone has tried this before. I have a brand new Macbook Pro that I bought more or less for the sole purpose of having a more powerful machine to run AVID Media Composer on. AVID is only compatible up to OS version 10.6.7 at the moment, and the machine I got was pre-loaded with Lion, 10.7....So I look at the support documentation Apple provides, and notice that in the nifty little chart they have, the latest line of Macbook Pros out there (early 2011) originally had version 10.6.6, so I'm assuming that's the previous version I can't downgrade past.
To revert back to Snow Leopard, however, I need to install it from the DVD which has version 10.6.3 on it, and then upgrade to any version between Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Lion 10.7. In theory this could work, the only problem being that for a brief time between installing Snow Leopard and updating to the version of it that I need, the computer will have version 10.6.3 on it.
Now I'm pretty sure if the only thing I do on the computer is immediately update to a safe-to-use version, there will be no problems. However, if the machine's hardware is so terribly non-backwards compatible with the Snow Leopard OS, I may do all this backing up and reverting and not even be able to start the computer once I get the old install on it. Before I just go ahead and try this for myself, I was wondering if anyone else has, and more importantly, have you had any success?

    Hi r,
EDIT: disregard my post. Waiting for that disc is a far better option.
    I hope w won't mind if I add a thought here:

Now I don't mind if some drivers are messed up and resolution is all funky when I install 10.6.3 on it, I just need to know if it'll be functional to the point where I can run the 10.6.6 update dmg. Once I update to 10.6.6 everything should work fine.
Or could I install 10.6.3, have the 10.6.6 update burned to a disc, and boot straight from that? This is my first Mac so I'm not sure what little tricks work or not.
Your first idea may work; the only way to know for sure is to try it. If you do, make sure you download and run the Combo update for 10.6.7 or 10.6.8. There can be different versions of a point update, those which are available for download, and those which ship on Macs, so you want to install one beyond that which shipped with some of the new MBPs.
If the MBP won't boot to 10.6.3, something else to try is installing it to an external HD, then installing the 10.6.7 update on it, clone it to the MPB's internal HD, and run the 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Combo update on it.

  • Can I Install Snow Leopard From USB On Another Mac?

    Hello everyone,
I own a 2010 macbook air that came with a snow leopard usb drive.
I've recently been given a 2008 macbook 4,1 that is running leopard.  I'd like to install snow leopard on this and use it as a secondary computer.  Will I be able to use the usb stick from my macbook air to update this computer from leopard to snow leopard?  If updating won't work would I be able to perform a fresh install of snow leopard from my usb drive?  Or is my only option to purchase a snow leopard dvd from apple?
    Thanks.

Ah! Thank you, Niel. Forgot about the "weird" Air models without any kind of optical drive. I realize to get the Air models as thin as Apple did required the removal of such a drive, but virtually every user who bought one had to then go out and buy an external DVD drive anyway so they could install their other purchased software.

  • Will iLife be deleted when I erase my hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard and the Applications with the disks that came with the computer?

I plan to restore my computer to factory settings to have a fresh start but i dont know if all the ilife applications will still be there (imovie, iphoto, etc). Or is the ilife applications included in the Applications Install DVD?

Yes, they are, unless you have a machine which shipped with Mac OS X Server, in which case you wouldn't have them to begin with.

You can certainly make an appointment with an Apple Store Genius. They will be able to help you out with your machine, but for something as lengthy as a complete reinstall, you probably will have to pay them and leave the machine with them. It's also important to note that you will probably be responsible for the backups. Unless they tell you otherwise, it would be wise to assume they'll take your machine and hand back one that's been wiped totally clean, with all personal data and third-party applications gone.
To learn how to back up your computer, see my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups>. To try to resolve kernel panics on your own, see [the X Lab guide|http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html]. If you ultimately decide to take it to the Apple Store, don't just walk in... visit your local [Apple Retail Store page|http://www.apple.com/retail> and make an appointment with a Genius.

  • How do I install snow leopard from the email/pdf Apple sent me if I dont have the Mac App store?

I need to update my Mac to snow leopard.  I purchased it online, and they sent me an email with the redemption code.  The instructions say I have to redeem it from the Mac App Store, but since you have to have Snow Leopard or higher to get the Mac App Store, I don't know how to redeem my purchase....please help.

You have half of the equation. Buy Snow Leopard and when the DVD arrives you use it to upgrade your Leopard system or erase the drive and install a clean copy of Snow Leopard. If you decide to do the former then be sure you use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you choose the latter do the following:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Click on the Featured icon in the toolbar. On the right below Quick Links you will see the Redeem link. Click on it to redeem Mountain Lion.

  • Installed snow leopard and the right click on my mouse no longer works. Any ideas?

I just replaced my hard drive and installed a clean copy snow leopard with all updates. Between the hassle of replacing a hard drive, mouse problems, firefox, opera, office mac and elgato tv problems and issues im fed up.

Apple menu -> System preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse should give you controls over the mouse. If not, either Steer Mouse or USB Overdrive might give you better control.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on the latest ultra thin iMac?

With extra RAM installed (4 - 8GB) on a newer and faster Mac, you should not see any slowdown in Freehand MX:

In Parallels 8, copy & paste is implemented with Parallels Tools installed, but drag & drop is still not implemented.

  • Recovery of Snow Leopard using the original install DVD

    Hi everyone,
    I encounted the following problem:
Somehow a folder called "private" which had a lot of system files ended up in the trash. I tryed to empty it - it wouldn't let me do that, saying "the folllowing files.... are in use". Tryed to move back the folder - the computer wouldn't accept my password.
After re-booting, the computer doesn't start at all.
    Tryed the following:
    1. Starting with "command" + R, getting into disk utility. Veryfied and repaired - it says the "disk appears to be ok". Still no luck with starting up the comp.
    2. Tryed to reboot from the original installation DVD (I have Snow Leopard). Message appears: "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer".
All I am trying to do is to SAVE the files before I can use the "Time Machine".
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

From the recovery partition, open the Terminal and enter the following on a single line:
    mv '/Volumes/drivename/Users/homename/.Trash/private/' '/Volumes/drivename/private/'
replacing the underlined text with the actual names.
