Installing Snow Leopard server (10.6.0) over Snow Leopard 10.6.2

I need to convert my Mac Pro to run Snow Leopard Server. I have the DVDs.
The installer tells me I cannot perform the upgrade because the OS on the machine
is more recent than the one on the DVD. I guess I have to downgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.0
before I can install the server OS. I do not want to reformat my hard disk, because I want to
keep the data there. How can I accomplish what I want to do.

assuming your mac pro did not come with 10.6.2 preinstalled you can reinstall 10.6.0 on it in the usual manner. boot from the snow leopard 10.6.0 install dvd (insert the dvd, reboot and hold "c" at the chime). and follow the instructions. this will preserve your data and applications. but as with any system install you should have a full backup before doing it.

Without an optical drive of its own, a Mini Server model would require the use of an external optical drive capable of supporting OS X installation and booting. This could include another Mac capable of supporting Target Disk Mode and the use of the second computer's optical drive. Or a supported external optical drive.
Another question may arise in the fact you would not be able to use an older OS X install disc older than the version shipped with the computer; the date of the Snow Leopard version's retail install disc would have to be newer than the SN OS X 10.6.x install DVD the machine shipped with in order to use it.
There may be a way to do a Custom installation from the Snow Leopard Server version DVD you have. This would likely be the best bet if possible. Given the higher level tools and processes available to the Server version of OS X Snow Leopard, being able to use that is a better preference overall than Client version.
You may be able to upgrade an internal hard disk drive to a larger capacity unit, or get and use a supported externally enclosed hard disk drive capable of supporting OS X booting and clones; these options could expand the basic use of the computer no matter what version of OS X you have running within it. Later on should you decide to experiment, a second drive for dual booting 10.6. & 10.7 could be a way to go forward.
The accessory use of a more dedicated external optical drive for the Mini Server edition is recommended; as well as the use of an external enclosure for an additional hard disk drive for backup purposes.
Depending on the version of standard retail Snow Leopard install DVD you may have, the ability to perform an Archive and Install should be available to you. Or perhaps a custom installation to nullify some of the more advanced parts of the Server version may be a possibility to investigate. I'd read up on what advantages a Server version of OS X can provide you, before leaving it.
When Lion 10.7 arrives, if your computer is supported, it should be relatively easy to upgrade & install the standard version (vs Server) via an upgrade where you keep user account settings etc from the previous OS.

OS X Snow Leopard Server want to go to Snow Leopard Client

I want to essentially blow away Server and install Snow Leopard client. I have a MacMini, just bought it. Restarting the typical way won't let me install the client OS from Server. What's a way to install client over server.

IIRC, you need the client install disc. However, I don't muck with OS X Server, so you should check the server forums.

Uninstalling Mac OS X Leopard Server or Reinstalling Mac OS X Leopard

I've no longer got any need for a server and would like to uninstall it or install Mac OS X Leopard (not Server) over it. Is there any way to do this retaining as much as possible that's unrelated to the server, also without using an external HD. Thanks in advanced.

Insert the Leopard Installer Disk for Client OS and at the Installer Stage select the hard drive and select Archive & Install. It's your choice if you decide to Preserve Network Users and Settings. If you don't want to preserve any previous users then simply select Archive & Install.
On successful restart everything including previous users' home folders should be placed in a folder marked Previous Systems. There should be nothing left on the active Client OS that has anything to do with the previous Server OS.
Preserving Network Users and Settings will retain the previous System Admin User account as well as the Network Settings.
I have used the Client OS before in the past to reinstall a clean system on a failing or problematic Server. This allows no wiping of the drive as well as preserving possibly important data. Server OS can then be used to 'upgrade' the client OS. I would recommend a wipe and an install for Server OS although the method described can be useful if you're short of options.

Given sufficient free disk and available memory (10 GB or more free disk, and 2 GB or more physical memory, respectively), most any desktop Intel Mac will work with Mac OS X Server 10.6 Snow Leopard Server. This per the Snow Leopard Server 10.6 Technical Specifications.
Laptops can also work, but are not supported AFAIK, and Mac OS X Server isn't particularly suited for laptops.
Apple sells packaged configurations based on Mac Mini (Mac Mini Server) and Mac Pro (Mac Pro Server).
The upcoming Lion Server requires specific Intel processors.

My colleague is an ADC Member (paid a couple hundred dollars for this). He was able to download Mac OS X Server 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for FREE. He tried to search for a link to download Mac OS X Server 10.5 (Leopard Server) but could not find anything.
As an ADC Member, is there any way to request a link to download Leopard Server for FREE?
We need Leopard Server for development purposes.

What client-style apps can you run on Leopard Server?

I have a small network and therefore want my Leopard server to also support a small number of OSX applications: iTunes (including iTunes sharing), DVD Player, Safari, Mail, etc. to allow me to use it as an occasional workstation for small tasks.
Is this possible? I assume Leopard Server has all the underpinnings of Leopard, but it's not clear on the Apple web site.
Other than risking server stability, are there any other issues with doing this?

I would agree with the assessment that Tiger Server is roughly as stable as Tiger Client where running 'client' applications (I would refer to them as GUI-based apps run from the console). I can't comment on the stability of Leopard Server in the same regard; haven't had it out of the box long enough yet.
You have to ask yourself how much stuff you really want to run on the server; if it's a business-critical server that you can't afford much downtime on, then installing a lot of applications will start to work against you. In addition to eating up processor and memory resources that could be used by Mail, Web service, etc., GUI-based apps may make your server somewhat more crash-prone.

File Sharing Speed with Leopard Server/ Windows XP

Went from Panther Server to Leopard Server. Panther worked fine. Leopard Server we've had a lot of problems with Windows XP clients. We run data files from the server. Using Panther the file sharing speed was comparable to putting the data file on the PC itself. When we moved to Leopard the speed went through the floor. 8 seconds on the PC and 4.5 minutes on the Server. The server is a substantially stronger machine with a lot more resources - but we've had to stop using it for it's intended purpose.

Same problem but almost the reverse. 10.5.2 server, windows clients file browsing, opening and saving speed is great, but our 4 iMac clients (Leopard also) really, really slow to generate thumbnail views of files and open them. Happens across several shares, seems to be a problem with AFP, although now after disabling AFP on some of the shares, it is happening on SMB as well. I have read several other discussions on this forum that attempt to deal with AFP performance issues, but none provide a real solution. Now that it is also happening with the SMB protocol as well I am getting a bit concerned.
Any advice or even a link to more info would be greatly appreciated.

Install Lion over Snow Leopard Server

I have a mac-mini that was purchased with Snow Leopard Server (the server model from just over a year ago).
Turns out, I haven't used any of the server functionality that wasn't already in the base User/Consumer version of OS X, so I want to just install Lion and not waste $50 on the Server Add on.
I've tried this via the Mac App Store _AND_ via the USB dongle. It wont install. When you try to run the Lion installer, it gives a "waiting for the App Store to download the Server Add-on" dialog. It gives you the option to cancel if you don't want that ... but cancel doesn't do what a reasonable person would think: skip the server add-on. Instead, it cancels the entire installation.
Anyone had this problem? Anyone know how to work around it? or if there's a work-around at all?

instead of that, I just told it to erase my time-machine partition, and install there. (it refused to install over the top of my "server" partition). Since I had recently done a full backup to an external drive, I wasn't worried about that path. It has taken a bit more work to get fully up to speed, but it at least worked.
But, either path (downgrade to SL client, then upgrade to Lion sans Server-add-on vs blow away an install and install elsewhere) are both ****-poor user experience designs in my opinion. Though, I doubt it matters now, since all future stuff will be via the Mac App Store, and you can just tell that to uninstall Server.

Wiped my entire macbook drive and now snow leopard won't install over snow leopard server, HELP!

I ordered, what I thought, was Snow Leopard a while ago because I was running Leopard and I wanted to get the app store so I could move onto Lion and then Mountain Lion. I ordered the disc over the phone and the woman sent me the Snow Leopard Server instead of just Snow Leopard, I didn't think much about it so I clean installed it and ran it on my unibody macbook for a while. I didn't see much use for the disc anymore seeing that everything was downloadable at this point, so I sold the disc on Ebay and carried on. The server edition started to slow my computer down due to all of its excess applications and what not, and I read online that Lion and Mountain Lion are also very slow on the old unibody Macbooks so I ordered a regular Snow Leopard disc, now available online, and tried to install it. My computer said Snow Leopard cannot be installed over Snow Leopard server so I went to disc utitlity and wiped my entire drive while the OS X Snow Leopard disc was running and trying to install. I went back to the install window and it still said OS X Snow leopard cannot be installed over Snow Leopard Server so I shut down my computer and tried to turn it back on and I all I got was a blinking folder with a question mark in it, what do I do????????
P.S. All of my content is backed up on an external harddrive so I am all good with that.

Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting has finished quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the Snow Leopard installation.

Help: Install Snow Leopard Server 10.6.0 on Mid-2010 Mac Mini, then update?

I just purchased a Mid-2010 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Client 10.6.3 (the new ones just released) with the idea of installing my copy of Snow Leopard Client on it and using it as both a network server and media server.
I own Snow Leopard Server 10.6.0 (the initial DVD release) and was thinking I could do a fresh install and update to 10.6.4 on the Mini without problem, but that didn't work. I also tried doing a Target Disk Install to the Mini using my MacbookPro, but the installer choked at the Machine Checksum saying MBPs weren't supported to run the installer.
So, that blows both of my previously known installation options. I was wondering if anyone else with the new Mini and Snow Leopard Server had any suggestions on how to get my current version of Snow Leopard Server (10.6.0) installed on the Mini and then run system updates to get it to boot properly.

It is pretty clear that my installation disk is too old, hence looking for options and suggestions.
In years past with previous versions of Server, there was a way to install an outdated install disk (a point release or 3 behind) and then run the necessary installation updates...either through target disk mode or on to a separate boot disc.
So, with my 10.6.0 Server Install disc, I am not able to do so in either scenario because a) My other admin machine is a MB Pro and the installer performs a hardware checksome preventing install...so no Target Disk Mode, and B) Install on other disc from mini, again Hardware checksome since hardware not recognized.
I am looking at options to enable an install with my disk short of having to physically walk into Apple (a huge trek) and get a new install disk or ask Apple Support to mail one.
So, again... Any options from OS X Server Admins out there?

I have just installed Mountain Lion over Snow Leopard, I now can't open Photoshop?

Hi everyone, I have just installed Mountain Lion over Snow Leopard. The installation went smooth and woks well. Now I find that Ican't open either Photoshop CS or Microsoft Word. I upgraded in order to install Lightroom 5, obviously there is now an incompatability, is there a work around?

If that is the original Photoshop CS, and Word 2004 or earlier, then they won't open because Lion and Mountain Lion do not support PowerPC apps. They must be Intel code. Snow Leopard could run them because it included Rosetta, a PowerPC to Intel (and back) interpreter.
You have a few options.
1) Go back to Snow Leopard.
2) Update your apps to compatible versions.
3) If you have Mountain Lion because newer apps require it then:
a) Install Snow Leopard Server (currently being sold by Apple for $20) in a VM such as Parallels, and then run your PPC apps in the VM.
b) Install Snow Leopard on a separate partition and boot to that version of OS X when you need to use those older apps.

Can I install Snow leopard server on the new Mac Mini Lion server?

Hi guys, I purchased a Lion Server and I am wondering if its possible to install Snow Leopard server on it.
I have the Snow Leopard Server install discs and everything , just wondering if there is any thing I should take note of, I personally prefer SLS over Lion.

hello,there are 2 harddisks on a mac mini server 2010 (snow leopard server.)i want to use the other hdd for installing Windows home server 2011 x64 .
but there is no bootcamp on the server.(do i have to download it?)
how can i do this,or do i have to use parallels desktop.
i have also a mac mini and a macbook pro and an alienware and a clevo laptop so i want the 2 servers seperate(and the mac-server on all the time)

You would need to install SL (non sever) on you Mac Mini Server.
You may be able to install the nonsever version on your 2nd HDD
-Partition you 2nd HDD to the max BootCamp Partition
-Install Windows Home Server on the BootCamp Partition (don't know of Windows Server is supported)
So you would have:
hdd1 - SnowLeopard Server
hdd2 - SnowLeopard (non-server) + Bootcamp Partition
Scenario 2:
If you don't have a need for SL Server SW, then wipe out the system and put only the regular SL (non sever) on disk 1. Partition Disk2 for Bootcamp only.
hdd1- SL (non-sever)
hdd2 - Bootcamp
I really don't know if you can copy the Bootcamp app onto SL Server OS to create a Bootcamp partition.

That apart, yes, switching might involve rebooting. About the voices, well, I was the other day adding voice to a commentary in a video I was working on. There's only American English accent in SL — Lion I believe has British ones as well.
