Installing Solaris 10 with 19" DELL Flatpanel

Hi!
I installed the Solaris 10 (10/06) with an NVidia 6600 GT using a DELL 19" Flatpanel Monitor. The suggested driver didn't work, so I used the NVidia VESA-driver. The reason was, that the monitor displayed only a message that a unsupported resolution is displayed. This happened with all tested combinations of monitors and resolutions :-( VESA worked :-) ...but only for the installation process.
Installation has finished, the system rebooted and now the Flatpanel displays again: "Unsupported resolution/frequency".
I booted the safe-mode and tried to run kdmconfig, but it refused to run, because the terminal-type isn't recognized.
I'm new to Sol10 - what is the best way to solve the problem (without searching a old crt-monitor in the darkest edge of my cellar) ;-) ?

Having the partition at the end of the disk shouldn't be the big problem, I often place the partition at the begining as I used to do with linux...
I really don't know if there is a restriction for the solaris loader to be at the first cilinders (maybe yes, that's why I put it at the begining)....
but the point here is to have some unallocated space... so try it out... if for some reason the solaris loader doesn't work your system could be screwed up (no booting anywhere) but if that happens the solution is quite simple: to restore the MBR from Windows (recovery console booting from CD)....

thats because you wrote "-install", which will be parsed as "-i nstall", hence your system will try to execute a kernel named "nstall".
The proper syntax is "boot net - install", with spaces on both sides of the -.

Installing Solaris 8 with a NVIDIA RIVA TNT MODEL 64 video board

I'm trying to find out if anybody knows of any compatible drivers for the NVIDIA RIVA TNT MODEL 64 video board for Solaris 8.
I can install Solaris using 640 x 480 with 16 colours, and that works without any problem, but the installation does not seem to have any compatible drivers.
I've tried contacting NVIDIA but have not received any reply.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It appears as if this particular chipset is supported as suggested
in the Hardware Compatibility List.
The -- in the bus field indicates that this chipset is used on different video devices whether they be motherboard integrated
video cards or dedictaed video cards. (Check the notes at the top
of the video display adapter listings).
The note also explains that there is no guarantee that the same
chipset will work with all video devices; only a selceted number
of devices with this chipset have been tested.
I just located a report where this particular chipset caused exactly the same problem. The TNT2 was integrated into a Microstar 694D motherboard. A full investigation was not carried out as the customer in this case closed the call having used a different card.
As far as I know, the NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 chipset has successfully been
tested on the Diamond Viper V770 and Creative Labs 3D Blaster RIVA TNT2.
Upon bootup what is the BIOS level of the card as reported? Another
engineer has managed to test a card with TNT2 BIOS 2.05.04, 32MB.
I think that webstart problems were avoided by installing directly from the SOftware CD's 1of 2 and 2 of 2 in non graphics mode (opting not to specify video at the kdmconfig screens)

Installing Solaris 10 with RAID + ZFS ?

Hi, i've recently built a home-made server for racking with a local co-location provider, I've currently got Fedora 9 on it, but would really wish to have Solaris 10 to get ZFS support.
Got a couple of questions before i wreck my fedora 9 install, if anyone would be so kind,
I've dowloaded the Solaris 10 5/08 iso and burned that to dvd ready for install. Now when I do install Solaris will it reformat the drives as default with ZFS support or is this something that has to be done afterwards, also with the x86 install will it be able to boot from ZFS?
Idealy I've got two identical drives on there for RAID 1 so for the entire machine to be using ZFS would be the ideal setup, running in headless with just SSH to connect.
Any thoughts?

If you are running Solaris 10 U5, you can only have mirroring using svm, plus the root file system must be UFS.
However, you can make a slice in a zfs partition an mirror that (I wouldn't recommend using svm to mirror on
top of ZFS).
Opensolaris 2008.05 does zfs boot, and Nevada could do zfs boot since Build72 ( http://sol10frominnerspace.blogspot.com/2007/09/setup-zfs-boot-for-build-72.html ) - though bits and pieces were
not working o rmissing (like swap in a zvol). The big roll in was on Build94 ( http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/on/flag-days/91-95/ )
so if you get the latest, your chances of running into any issues are lower.

Installing Solaris 10 with Windows XP

Hi,
I have an existing Windows XP installation, and want to install Solaris 10 on the same hard drive, for which I have created an extra primary partition. However, the installation seems to want to take over the whole hard drive, so I am a bit hesitant to proceed.
Is there a simple guide to installing Solaris 10 to coexist with an existing Windows NT/2000/XP installtion?
(If I am posting this to the wrong forum, please forgive my ignorance, and kindly point me to the correct one - it is my first time here)

I'm totally new to Solaris. As an enthusiast, I wants to install Solaris 10 on my Win XP PC's 2nd Hard Drive(40GB, empty) from Solaris 10 DVD.
I need help from how to format 2nd Hard Drive to how can I configure the PC so it asks me which OS to load every time.

Happened upon this post while searching for an answer to something else and figured I would give my 2 cents on what you are trying to do so as to offer you some other ideas, as in stuff I have done personally in similar situations, just in case the other suggestions don't work out (and to avoid repartitioning your main hdd if it is your ONLY computer with an OS you have available).
Assuming you have a standard tower or mid-tower with at least 1 free 5 1/4" bay open, and if your motherboard doesn't support booting from a slave drive, and if you prefer a hardware solution so your OS installs are isolated from each other to be certain no corruption happens, like I personally do*. Then you may consider a pair of key lock internal hard drive racks (newegg search "hard drive rack ide" or sata). You would need at least 1 free 5 1/4" bay for the rack mount, then place the hard drives in their housings, each set as master, and you can stick in which ever OS drive you want, turn the key, then boot up (I recommend storing drives not in use in some large anti-static bags for protection). If you have 2 open slots, like I did on my tower, then you can connect both to the same cable and leave both in at all times. Just make sure ONLY 1 drive is keyed "on" at a time, or else you will get errors due to duplicate masters set. Also make sure you ONLY turn the keys when the system is OFF, the racks do NOT make the drives hot-swappable, it is only to offer an easier solution for using multiple hard drives on one PC so you don't have to open the case all the time and potentially damage the pins or the drives when switching them out.. Also you may need longer cables depending on the motherboard controller placement and the size of your tower, 80 wire 40pin if you are dealing with IDE (when you get longer I've noticed less 80 wire and more slower 40 wire cables). As always when dealing with the actual hardware, be extra careful, make sure power is off and PC is unplugged, touch the PC power supply if you don't have better solutions such as anti-static mat/wrist band, etc. You probably know all of this, but just making sure.
*I lost a lot of data one of the first times I tried an open source OS many years ago (some Linux distro, I forget which), I tried to repartition my windows 98 drive, it worked fine for about a week booting between the two, then most my personal windows files suddenly were random sizes and random folders ended up full of garbage files with garbage file names among other peculiar things.. If I partition a drive I generally only do it BEFORE I put data on it or install OS's.. or at least make CERTAIN that I have adequate methods for restoring my OS and personal files (such as imaging my OS install to a larger drive temporarily, etc)..
Anyway, was just offering some possible alternatives to repartitioning your main OS drive.. -TCP

I am trying to install solaris 8 in my computer. I already have win98 installed. I would like to continue using win 98. I have one disk. I need to know how to install solaris without overwritting my win98 Os.

I have a 15 GB harddisk. The first 7 GB partitioned and formatted for Windows. Then I installed windows. Next step was to partition (for example with TomsRTBT) the last 8 GB as a linux swap partition. It's unbelivable but this works, because after booting from the Solaris CD the installation program recognices the linux swap partition as Solaris partition. Then with the installation program you can partition the linux swap partition as Solaris needs it (divide it into slices 0 to 7 / c0t0d0s0, c0t0d0s1 and so on). After installing Solaris there is a Solaris bootmanager so you can choose what partition (Windows or linux) to boot from.

i am trying to install Solaris 7 on E250 which didn't come
shipped with monitor/keyboard/mouse. i made use of a serial
port connector and could hyperterminal in..but it doesn't
recognize the keyboard..says it can't open an input device..
so..i am stuck with the installation..
any thoughts on this?

We are seeing the same problem with trying to install Solaris 7 on a system with a Adaptec 2940 scsi card. We also know that the hardware is working because it was tested with Win98.
The system boots from the install disk but doesn't see the CD-ROM to load the operating system.
We found a patch 107858-01 but can't get it to copy to floppy after downloading on another older Solaris box.
The instructions say do a

but it always comes up with device busy.
We are Solaris newbies so if the answer to this problem is obvious please let us know and forgive the idiocy!

It's a good a way as any considering your environment. What I've done in the past is get hold of around 4 or 8 firewire cables. If these are the newest iMacs then you'll be wanting firewire 800. Image two iMacs first. TDM another two to these two. Now you have 4. If you have another 4 cables repeat the procedure. Now you have 8. The longest time taken will be with the initial one or two iMacs. Thereafter once cascaded in this way with enough cables they can all be done at the same time.
The only problem I had - and you've mentioned it - is space and power outlets. Desk space is always a problem if they're not in situ.

Judging by your Name is it safe for me to assume you've installed FCP? I guess the image is going to be quite large then? I imaged a suite of iMacs some time back with FCP, Adobe CS4 and Office. Total space taken was 110GB. Took 12-13 hours to image. I hope your image is not that large?

Installing Solaris 9 with other Operating Systems x86

Hi, I am new to Solaris world. I want to install solaris 9 on my home computer on which I've already installed Windows XP and RedHat Linux 9. I have a few questions regarding the installation process.
(a) Is a primary partition necessary for installing Solaris 9 (I have only one primary partition and free space in extended partition)? Is there a way to boot Solaris 9 from a logical drive in the extended partition?
(b) Will choosing the default option on the Solaris installation fdisk screen erase my previous partitions?
I will appreciate if anybody care to answer.

Installing Solaris 8 on a Dell Inspiron 3700

Is this possible?

Dell portables seem to have a problem with Solaris 8. The Inspiron may or may not work. My Lattitude does not. There is a page on this at http://www.bolthole.com/solaris/x86-laptops.html
Options include:
use a USB keyboard - makes a portable not so portable;
use VMWare under NT or Linux - you need Linux version to do the install as NT won't read the CDs, but you can run under NT or Linux. VMWare is a neat program and very useful, but it costs since they dropped the $99 personal edition. Also, it presents an SVGA adapter that needs XFree86 or XiG ;
use Solaris 7 - but you may need XiG or XFree86;
buy a Toshiba Tecra that others report works well with Solaris - I have only used them with NT and Linux and they were good for that;
lobby Sun to get a fix out - and ensure problem is not carried through to Solaris 9.

Problems installing Solaris 10 on Dell PowerEdge 800

Hi,
I am experiencing some trouble when I attempt to install Solaris 10 on a Dell PowerEdge 800. It is equipped with two RAID disks controlled by a Dell CERC SATA 1.5/6ch (according to the BIOS).
The installation program reports that it cannot write to the disk. This happens when it is about to start installing files. Tried setting it to a single volume and disable RAID. Same thing. Read another article saying something about disabling IDE, well it doesn't seem to help ...
Any hints?

I have the same problem on a dell 750 with the SERC controller. I can add some more information but if you get a solution I would appreciate the detail.
1) If I install Solaris via the SERC in RAID 1 mode then the alarm on the SERC goes off as soon as I start to write to the disk.
2) I bypassed the SERC and installed on a single disk straight off the motherboard. Time the install crashed at the same point but this time the error message told me that the first available cylinder was number 3! Ah
3) I reconnected the disk via the SERC, rebuilt the RAID array and made a mistake. I created a RAID 0 (striped) array and installed the software starting from cylinder 3. I got a complete solaris install that rebooted fine and is fully working.
BUT I NEED A MIRRORED SYSTEM SO
4) I rebuild the machine again this time RAID 1 and again the crash occured at exactly the same point i.e. as soo as I start to write to the disk.
Whether or not DELL / Adaptec support Solaris should not be an issue. This is a BIOS configurable RAID controller that can be fully serviced (e.g. disks replaced) from the BIOS. The system sees the array as a disk via the controller and indeed it is seeing it.
The SERCs own data configuration data should be on sectors which are not visible to solaris VIA the SERC so we shouldnt be able to damage them but I suspect that this may not be the case.
I suspect that the answer is in the partition layout and who or what creates them (I dont mean the Solaris slices but the FDISK partitions)
To make matters worse, since I need the machine working I went back to disks straight of the motherboard and configured again and used metadevices to set up a fully mirrored systemas I have done many times before on sparc (but never on Solaris x86)
This worked fine but I thought that I would test bootability in the event of disk failure. There isnt any!
if disk 1 fails then the motherboard wont accept disk 2 unless you swap the cables and move it do disk 1 and by then the boot sectors are wrong for the address of the device. I can probably solve this by building both disks in slot one but who wants a mirrored server that you have to open up and move a cable when the disk fails. I think I may have to ditch SATA and go back to SCSI !
