Installing Solaris 10 with RAID + ZFS ?

Hi, i've recently built a home-made server for racking with a local co-location provider, I've currently got Fedora 9 on it, but would really wish to have Solaris 10 to get ZFS support.
Got a couple of questions before i wreck my fedora 9 install, if anyone would be so kind,
I've dowloaded the Solaris 10 5/08 iso and burned that to dvd ready for install. Now when I do install Solaris will it reformat the drives as default with ZFS support or is this something that has to be done afterwards, also with the x86 install will it be able to boot from ZFS?
Idealy I've got two identical drives on there for RAID 1 so for the entire machine to be using ZFS would be the ideal setup, running in headless with just SSH to connect.
Any thoughts?

If you are running Solaris 10 U5, you can only have mirroring using svm, plus the root file system must be UFS.
However, you can make a slice in a zfs partition an mirror that (I wouldn't recommend using svm to mirror on
top of ZFS).
Opensolaris 2008.05 does zfs boot, and Nevada could do zfs boot since Build72 ( http://sol10frominnerspace.blogspot.com/2007/09/setup-zfs-boot-for-build-72.html ) - though bits and pieces were
not working o rmissing (like swap in a zvol). The big roll in was on Build94 ( http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/on/flag-days/91-95/ )
so if you get the latest, your chances of running into any issues are lower.

Can't install Win7 with Raid 0 on a K9A2 CF

Motherboard:    MSI K9A2 CF
DDR:     8GB (4*2GB)
Proc:      AMD Athlon 620
HDD's:      2*Hitachi 640GB (same drive models)
So the problem i'm having is that i can't get Windows7 to get installed in raid 0. I bought this set of hardware to do some experimenting with small business server 2008. I've installed SBS2008 in Raid 1, and seemed to work (but i've never crashed a disk to test it). The tests went fine, and since a month or two this PC/Server is doing nothing.
Now i've been trying to get Windows7 installed but can't get it going with a Raid 0 setting (that's why i'm doubting if the RAID 1 with sbs was working correctly).
First problem i'd run into was that my DVD wasn't accepted (missing device driver). I've created a bootable USB disk and seem to work.
The problem starts when i should select the disk.
First, i've setup the following in the RAID-Bios:
I've done it with 1 array, or with 2 array's it doesn't change anything.
In the normal bios (updated last night to the latest version, which actually slows the systems down during the install). I've selected RAID in this screen
RAID (i've selected RAID)
When i get the option to select a drive, it doesn't display any drives so I select the option to add a driver.
These are the drivers i've downloaded:
But when selecting these drivers I've get a negative response
(with or without "Hide drivers that are not compatible......"
When i download other drivers (I actually tried them all) i get some response:
But when i select this driver, it takes several minutes to proces:
But it comes back blank:
When i select in the bios other options (like IDE)
It comes default with a disk:
But this is half of the array (1 drive). When i try to partition it, it fails. So it isn't accessible.
Last thing: i've tested with all 3 available Bios options (IDE, RAID and AHCI) in combination with all (Win7, Vista and WinXP) drivers. But there are no differences.
I understand i made a long post, but normally i just figure it out myself with researching on the web. I have tried everything i can think of. But it seems that:
1. I made an error configuring the raid-arrays (with one big array, the results are the same).
2. I made an error in the bios? (setting should be raid, other settings i should think of?)
3. I'm working with the wrong drivers? I think i'm doing something wrong driver related but can't pin the problem.
4. Or... ?
I'm open to suggestions, i've run out of option. :(

Great link, seems to work. So after trying everything it was just a simple driver error.
I've tried the drivers from 1337 but they didn't work. But the chinese drivers did work:

I don't know how or what. But the RAID console seemed to get 2 disks (2 raid arrays) and installed and formatted correctly from there on.
Installed Win7, booted and all the hardware was accepted.
If anyone has a line to MSI or someone from MSI is reading this: If needed i'm willing to run some kind of debugger if it helps. But otherwise I would suggest checking the drivers offered on the website because the drivers on the MSI website are faulty for some of your users. On the K9A2 they will not work with RAID with Windows 7 64-bit (the official drivers I mean).
Bas to answer your question: I have no particular interest in running a 64-bit operating system. But when it failed to work it became a challenge to get it working. I could have switched to 32bit immediatly but I don't like to give up the first moment something doesn't go as planned, and in the end I had so much time invested I just wanted it to work under 64bit .

I had downloaded solaris 8 binary in winnt, i found that it is a zip file containing one file with file extension .ml (sol-8-1_01-install-fcs-bin-ia-ml). How to install? need to format hardisk? what partition tool to use? where to get startup disk? need to write a CD? Where to get best docs available for beginer????

WinXP SP2 format time and overall install time with RAID 0.

Jan-Feb 2003, I built an Intel based system with an asus motherboard, and 2 80GB sata seagate hard drives. It took approx 11 minutes from initial "press any key to boot from cd.." to the very last step of the tour. The formatting time was, I'd say under a minute. It was phenomenal.
I just recently finished building my current AMD based computer with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. Among all the other stability issues I am having, it seems Winxp is slow. Is this a function of MSI's raid controller/driver?

I remember pre-SP2 boot times were awesome on my system. Even after a clean install SP2 boot time sucks compared to SP1. Gotta live with it i guess. I'd love to get those boot speeds back when benchmarking and tweaking my system. AFAIK it is a SP2 thing and there's not much that can be done about it. If there is someone please post.

990xa-gd55 win7 install problem with raid

I have 990xa-gd55 just got it today as my other board had a problem seeing 3 HDD.
I have the bios set up in raid mode, I have my raid array set up. But when I install windows it copies the files and extracts them then, bsod's on restart and can continue install.
I have a 128 Samsung ssd that I want it installed on and it is not part of the raid I have 2 1 TB drives that make up the array. I hope i'm just forgetting something easy any help is appreciated.

Well, I'd make sure you have the boot options manually set to which array you have your OS on. Hit F10 as the machine boots and check out your options there. It should give you an option somewhere to select which RAID array to boot off of, although I can't remember if it's in BIOS or the Nvidia boot agent at the moment.

Dual OS system booting issue - Solaris with Windows XP Pro

I have installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 on my laptop Dell Inspiron 6400 (Intel Core 2 Duo). I created partition as below,
C: 25GB (Primary : Active) Installed XP
D: 15GB (Primary) - Tried to install Solaris here
F: 10GB (Primary)
G: 20 GB (Logical)
H: 20 GB (Logical)
1. I tried to install Solaris 10, booted up system from DVD and selected Solaris. I got a message related to "License..." and it stopped right there, nothing showed up on screen after the message. I forced it to shutdown.
2. Next, I tried with Solaris Express Developer edition DVD. I was able to proceed until "Install" option. After clicking "Install" button, it reported some account name(no account name found) setting problem and quitted from installation. It asked to remove the DVD manually. But I was not able to eject it, got stuck. I switched off it and removed DVD.
When I bootup the system next time from HDD or CD or USB bootable backup, it showed blank screen and blinking cursor. I am not able to boot system with Win XP or USB Win Xp bootable. I am able to enter BIOS setup.
Please let me know how to boot up Win Xp and install Solaris with it.

with my little experience i find solaris 10 isn't able to install on sata hdd but with solaris express edition 5.11 i was able to install it on my lap top toshiba tecra and now i can boot with xp sp2 and solaris i hope this answer your question .

Install Solaris 5.10 64 bit with Raid 1

I want to Move one HDD from server list order no.1 to server list order no.2. Mean 1 of 4 HDD of server1 will move to server2
And it should be: server1 has 1TB x3 HDD and server2 has 2TBx2
After , Server1 configure with RAID5, server2 configure with RAID1 .
I configured Raid 1 on Server 2 but when I install Solaris , I don’t see Hard disk configured Raid 1 .

Just because you have two disks doesn't mean that Solaris will automatically use them as mirrors. You have to set this up, using SVM, ZFS VxVM, or the hardware RAID controller. Sometimes you can do this as part of the install, often it's done afterwards.
You haven't said what type of root file system your Solaris is on, so it's not possible to give you a procedure to mirror the boot drive.
If you use hardware RAID, it will zero any data on the drives, so that's probably out. I suspect you are using hardware management on your first system, as Solaris can't boot from a software striped or RAID5 device. This had to be setup before Solaris was installed on that system.

As long as you get one of the newer versions of Solaris (either Solaris 10 1/06 or one of the recent Express versions) the Solaris install will handle the grub installation for you. All you really need to do is repartition the hard disk so there is some unallocated space. I used Partition Magic, but there are several tools available. Just shrink the Windows partition down so there are at least 6 GB of unallocated space and start the Solaris install.
However, grub error 21 is caused by the BIOS not giving grub enough info to find the disk to boot off of; the Solaris install can't do much about that. You probably need to spend some time fiddling with the BIOS disk parameters to get it to work. What I would do is make a grub boot CD-ROM (there are instructions in the grub manual, I used grub binaries off a Debian distribution because that was what I had to hand.) Then keep fiddling the BIOS parameters and booting off the grub CD until grub displays your disk.
(Actually if you have the Ubuntu live CD, just fiddling the BIOS parameters until it boots is probably good.)
(For BIOS problems, if you know who made the motherboard in your system, it's often helpful to check the motherboard manufacturer's site for support forums. Surely somebody has managed to boot grub on a config similar to yours...)

Solaris 10 Install problem with SATA drives

Hi, I'm trying to install solaris 10 on a x86 system with 2 SATA drives running in a on board SATA controler (not RAID).
During install the setup fails to detect the disks, to install Windows XP I have to provide disk drivers during the setup procedure by pressing F6 and providing the drivers, alas I cannot seem to find either a way to provide SATA controler drivers to solaris, nor a suitable driver for solaris .
Any help would be extremely apreciated.

I had the same SATA problem on builds 69 and 72 of Solaris10, but the Release version recognises and installs readily on SATA drives on three mainboards that I use. They are Tyan s2875 with dual opteron cpus, Asus k8N-E with a 754 pin athlon64 cpu, and Gigabyte GA-K8NS-939 with a939 pin athlon64.
My Mandrake Linux10 says it sees the SATA drives, but never installed on them.
FreeBSD 5.3 Release for AMD64 sees the SATA and installs with no problems.
Hope this gives you some encouragement to persist

Install Solaris 10 5/08 on T5x40 with boot device hardware Mirrored Volume

I will have to install Solaris 10 5/08 on a hardware mirrored volume as a boot default device.
According to the "T5140 & T5240" Administration Guide" (Page 57), we have to boot the server (T5140 & T5240) on a network installation image in single-user mode (*ok boot net -s*) before configuring the raid controller using "raidctl -c -r 1 c0t0d0 c0t1d0". So, I need to have a Install Server/Boot Server ready.
Is it possible to boot from the CDROM in single-user mode and then from the CDROM configure the raid controller using "raidctl -c -r 1 c0t0d0 c0t1d0" ?

My customer doesn't have yet a Solaris server available where I could setup a boot/install server.
It means that I will have to find first a Solaris server and then setup the boot/install server to install the system (T5x40).

Installing solaris on 2 hard disks (not raid or mirroring)

I'm installing solaris 10 but with 2 hard disk this time. Primary IDE is 20GB and secondary is 30 GB. I want to use both the disks for one solaris installation. That is i want to distribute my /, swap, /usr, /opt, /var etc. over the two hard disk, for example making swap, / and /var on the first hard drive and /opt, /usr and other slices on the 2nd hard disk.
During installation when i select the first drive to use for solaris it deselects the other and when i select the second disk it deselects the first one. Kindly help me out on this.

basic reasoning or logic. For example what if i make
/ partition of 20GB and make /opt only 200MB? or
/export/home only 50MB and /usr 25GB? or /var only

The installer gives you a set of parameters during an initial install. You CAN take it or leave it.
docs.sun.com gives you a default scheme which you can take it or leave it.
If you search around enough you can find the rationale to support any decision that you make.
In the next version of Solaris, ZFS is reportedly going to ship.
How does this affect your question?
With ZFS specified filesystems will pull from a common storage pool. As long as the pool has space, any partition that needs space from that pool will automatically get it.
Then threads like this one should start to fade into the past.
Stated another way, if your partitioning scheme works for you then who's to say it's wrong?

Windows XP 64 bit pro clean install with RAID

I recently purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad W700 with the raid system (raid1) it had Vista Business pre installed but I wasn't impressed so I've cleared VB out and tried to install XP 64 pro I have followed the guide I found on this site http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=188992
which was very informative but didnt seem to include any details on a raid installation. If I change my BIOS Serial ata (sata) to compatibility I can install win xp and get it running but no raid!! if I try to install the Intel chipset driver it reports it cannot install!! If I set the Bios Serial ATA to RAID the setup goes so far through then I get the BSOD
I seems to me I need some raid drivers but have no way of installing them during setup (I dont have the drivers anyway!!)
Sooooo...........can anyone out there point me in the right direction for a clean xp pro install with raid?? theres a couple of beers in it!!

I believe you need to install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver for Windows XP, Vista (32bit) - ThinkPad. Installation instructions are on the same site. If you don't have a floppy you can streamline them onto an install disk.

I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
(nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this? bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

I want to buy a new laptop as my old lap top has Windows XP and 'suffers' from a lot of things! On this old lap top I have installed Premiere Elements 10, and I just want to know if the 'old' version 10 will work in Windows 8, as it is not mentioned in the system requirements here:

Problem with installing solaris 10

hi.
I'm using Intel-based processor for my stand-alone computer running Windows XP Professional with a broadband connection.
As directed by one of the guys here, and also by my own research, I found the documentation for installing Solaris 10 on x86 based computers.
By navigating through the documentations:

I followed the instructions as stated in the documentations and set BIOS to boot from CD.
It didn't worked. My computer went on to boot from my Windows OS located in my hard disk. (CD is my first boot device in BIOS)
I have 4 CDs now for Solaris 10 installation.
Each of the CD has a ISO file respectively.
Please help!

One or more of the following:
(A) Your motherboard and/or CD-ROM drive do not actually allow booting from CD even though all of the settings seem to be set correctly. I've had this happen to me before. Try a different CD-ROM drive.
(B) Your CDs are written from bad ISO images.
(C) Your CD writing software does not properly create bootable CDs. If you use Windows, Nero is highly recommended.
(D) Your CDs were written too fast. Rewrite the CDs using the slowest speed that your CD writer will allow.
