Installing   Solaris 8 &   8n external discs

I am looking for a way to install Solaris 7 & 8 on an external device.
This device is connected via fibre channel to the system.
Is there a way to load FC drivers during the installation (from CDROM)? and how ?
I appreciate any hint thanks,
bahram

Set up a jumpstartserver und modify the miniroot (i.e. /export/install/Solaris_8_HW0202/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot): You have to install the appropriate FC driver package into this dir (pkgadd -R $DIR). Then, take a look at the driver config file and the sd.conf in $miniroot/kernel/drv/ and modify them for your needs.

  • Install Solaris on External Firewire Disk

    Hello All,
I have a laptop running windows 2000 and I have a External Firewire Hard Disk of 60 GB. Now my question is, " Is it possible to install Solaris 8 on this external Firewire Hard Disk". When I tried installing, It did not find the external Firewire Disk, the only partition information, which solaris was displaying was from my internal Hard Disk.
Please give me clues/information, how should , I do it.
    Thanks
    Sanjay

First off, is any of your Macs an Intel Mac, that will complicate matters since they use a different hard drive formatting and need a different installation of Mac OS X.
Secondly, you can't directly install Mac OS X from an Intel Mac to an external hard drive, you have to do a clone with a software like Shirt-Pocket's Superduper for that.
If it isn't an Intel Mac, perhaps your Firewire hard drive isn't Mac OS X bootable? Not all are.
Here's a hint on making the Intel/PowerPC partition table:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006061610374449
Also note, different Macs which came out after Tiger will only boot off the install disk which came with them, and not the retail disk. So you are best off cloning that Mac to its own partition.

  • Possible to install Express on external disc - or what is minimal size?

    Hi,
I'm about to buy a recording software and so far Logic Express seems to fit my needs.
My question is if it is possible to install it on an external FW-disc along with other audio softwares and sounds (BFD2 for example)? I'm not sure if it is possible but I hope it is possible to install other audio softwares and sounds on the external disc and have the Logic Express minimal needs on my SSD-disc.
Does anyone know how many GB the minimal installation of the software for Logic Express?
    Thx!

    Hi,
you have to install the basic application on your system HD. This includes all the sampler instruments that come with the basic package. But: They might already be installed on your system if you have Garageband. Logic Express and Garageband share a huge part of their sampler instruments.
However, there are some additional GB's that will end up on your HD. The system requirements of LE say it needs 8GB for all the data (of which some is shared with Garageband).
The only data that can be saved on an external HD are additional Jam packs, projects, Audio recordings you make with LE and your own sample audio files for your own sampler instruments.

  • Can I use my old Macbook Pro as an external disc drive while installing Windows 7 through boot camp?

I want to install the Windows 7 CD on the newest version of the 2013 Macbook pro 10.9.2 running OSX Mavericks, through Boot Camp.  It does not have a disc port, nor do I have an external disc drive....but I do have an older macbook that does have a disc drive and I know you can supplement it for an external disc drive.
My question is can I use my old Macbook pro's as an external disc drive for the installation of Windows 7 in Boot camp? Will this be a problem? Or do I have to buy an external disc drive separately.

On the noecovery page I followed instructions to install Lion of external drive, which I did. Then tried to install on HD, but got same message as no recovery disc could be made and only option was to restart to back Leopard. Don't want to take to geniuses since there must be a simple answer.

  • How do I install Canoscan film scanner on macbook using external disc drive?

How do I install a CanoScan film scanner using external disc drive ?

sorry, not being very clear. I have the scanner and am trying to instal the operating  programme onto my new macbook. It was fine on my 6 year old one! I put the setup disc in the external drive. I can now get it to load 80% but it then stops. I have then tried to eject the disc - it won't let me as it says it is still setting up - but after 2 hours still says the same and clearly is doing nothing. I can't quit the setup programme - the only way I finally managed to quit was to to force quit the computer to shutdown and then when I start up again I can eject the disc.
Any idea how I make it load the 20% of the setup that it is currently refusing to do?

  • Attempting to install Solaris 10 on Netra t1 via external DVD-Rom

    Hello Experts,
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on my Netra t1 via external DVD. I connected the DVD-ROM to the scsi port on the back. System recognized the DVD but does not allow me to boot from it. I have done many things without any success. Following are the details:
    System info:
    Netra t1 (UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.25 ME, 1024 MB memory installed,
Ran the scsi test and it doesn't report any issues:
    ok test scsi
    Probe-scsi-all shows the drive:
    ok probe-scsi-all
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0

    ide /pci@1f,0/pci@1/pci@1/ide@e
I created devalias manually also with no help. Following is what I get when I try to boot from it:
    ok boot cdrom1

Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2/disk@6,0:f File and args:
    Drive not ready
    Evaluating: boot cdrom1
    Can't open boot device
I verified the DVD and it works just fine. I install the OS with the same DVD on Netra-440 system without any issues.
Please tell me what am I missing here or doing wrong. Please help.

    Sun-worshiper,
Thank you so much for pointing that out. I was loosing it.
Just in case someone else runs into this type of issue:
When you run probe-scsi-all please pay attention to the target. In order to boot from the DVD, I executed the following commands from the ok prompt:
    ok nvalias dvd /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2/disk@4,0:f
    ok boot dvd

  • Installing Solaris 10 11/06 from an external USB CD-ROM drive

Hello. I recently purchased a new SunFire V245 SPARC server and would like to re-install Solairs 10 on it. However, the internal DVD-ROM is on back order from the vendor and will not arrive for a few days. I have an exteranl USB CD-ROM drive and the server sees it and the media when I access it from the Java desktop. However, I cannot boot from this device or see it in OpenBoot using any of the probe command. I've searched several forums and have seen that Solaris 10 can be installed from an external USB device on the x86/x64 platform. But I cannot find any information or steps on how to implement this procedure on the SPARC platform. Is this functionality possible? Or do I have to update my OpenBoot version? Please advise if possible. Thanks.

    Hello Alex,
no, you can't use USB devices on SPARC as boot device.
The OBP (even updated ones) contains only support for the USB keyboard, but none for USB mass storage (which requires a device driver). The integrated USB ports are for slow devices like keyboard and mouse.
Using an external SCSI DVD-ROM works. Another choice is an installation via network.

After the GRUB menu it begins to load, displaying the " . . . . . ." and hangs about 1/4 way accross the screen. When attempting the install from a DVD instead of a CD the installation hangs on the same screen even sooner. Has anyone encoutered this problem?

  • Installing Windows 7 System Builder w/External Disc Drive?

I'm looking to buy Windows 7 so that I can install it on my Mac Mini (using Boot Camp) and I'm looking to buy this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SE-506BB-TSBD-External-Blu-ray/dp/B00AO1XFM0/ref=s r_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1399919388&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+external+bluray+mac
I'm wondering if the drive in the link above is able to install Windows 7 System Builder? I know there are a lot of threads and posts stating that install Windows 7 on a Mac isn't possible with an external optical disc drive. I want to install Windows 7 System Builder on my Mac Mini, but I don't know what I need to install it before I buy the Win7 System Builder install disc. Please help me. Thanks!

Hi, I'm not sure what system builder is, but I believe Win 7 can be installed from an external drive or even a Flash Drive.
I wonder if you might get a better answer over here...

  • Mini system installer disc doesn't install on a external firewire drive!

The osx insteller disc came with my mine doesn't allow me to install the system onto a external firewire hard drive. I am wondering if the retail mac osx be any different?
Would the retail version be able to create the GUID partition?
    .....Thanks a bunch.
BTW, what is the normal cpu operaton temperature and the max fan speed?
Message was edited by: Cup of Tea

The OSX installer should be able to install on your external, though if you're talking about an external drive connected to an Intel Mac, it MUST be partitioned in the GUID scheme first. Both original install disk and retail Tiger can perform this partitioning using Disk Utility. Simply boot to the install disk or retail Tiger, exit the installer, run Disk Utility, select the external drive (the top entry showing drive name and size), click the partition tab, then the options button, then the top option for GUID Partition Table. Click OK, then the Partition button.

  • HT1349 How do I go about installing software from a disc onto my ipad2? I have no external drive, but do have a PC with iTunes on it. Someone suggested I could load it into iTunes and then sync with the iPad, but this suggestion doesn't seem to work.

How do I go about installing software from a disc (a language programme) onto my ipad2? Someone told me if I downloaded it to iTunes on my PC I could then sync it to the iPad but hav not been able to do that.

Even if there was a convenient way, the software will not run on the pad.  Ios is a unique language, and only programs written for ios will run on the pad.   All of the programs are in the app store.  You might look there and see if the company that makes your sfotware also has an ios version, which would be in the store.

  • Possible to Install Leopard on External HD and Boot on Another Mac?

Is it possible to install the Leopard upgrade DVD onto an External HD, AND THEN use the external HD to boot Leopard onto another Mac? Also, since the upgrade disc is an "upgrade," would I have to first install Tiger onto the External HD?
    If possible...
Am I able to create an External Boot Drive that can boot both onto a PPC Mac and also onto an Intel Mac? Or will I have to create separate partitions?
Lastly, can Intel Macs boot from an External USB Drive? Or are FireWire Drives required? Thanks!

Yes, you can install on an external drive and boot the Mac. I do it all the time.
I'm not 100% sure whether the same drive can boot PPC and Intel Macs -- I don't think so because PPC macs require Mac formatting and Intel Macs require GPT formatting to boot.
Intel Macs can boot off both USB and Firewire external drives. PPC Macs can only boot off Firewire external drives. In any case, Firewire is better as it's quite a bit faster.

I have a Windows 7 laptop using I tunes 64 and all my music files are
on an external disc. I rarely use I tunes and at one point moved all my files
(including the music files) from one external disc to another without
considering what affect this would have on the I tunes library. When I eventually
attempted to use I tunes, every selected a song from the library resulted in a
message stating that the file couldn't be located. After following some of the procedures
explained in this community I was able to reconnect the library back to where
the associated music files are presently stored. However, there are still 2
problems that need to be corrected. 1) Every song file now has a duplicate. One
file works and the other file will result in the same message stating that the
file couldn't be located. Before there were 4,000 songs in the library, now
there are 8,000 songs. I need to eliminate the 4,000 dead song files. 2) All
the playlists are still associated with the dead song files which makes the
playlists unusable. Can the playlists be reconnected to the usable files
without manually having to recreate them? Thanks in advance for the help.
    sdkr

    So am I understanding correctly?
You used your iPod as a hard drive (drag and drop) instead of having iTunes install the music?
If you used drag and drop your choices are different than if you used iTunes to transfer.
    Good luck!

  • Problems installing Solaris 8 2/04

I installed Solaris 8 2/04 in a Sun Fire V120 (UltraSPARC-IIe 648MHz), the installation finished but when server restarted it displayed this:

i do not know if is a hard drive problem. Please help me because i tried three times the installation but the problem still exists

Since this is a fresh installation, you might consider starting it all over again.
You may have made some initial selections while prompted at the beginning of the install process, that accidentally omitted essential system files.
As for that device path and the disk? It's pointing to an external non-Sun peripheral that's connected to the rear external SCSI port. That drive has some bad sectors. ( I wouldn't trust a new OS on those sectors until you fixed them.)
The errors are not calling out either of the two possible internal drives.
Infodoc 21216 lists a few default system device paths, and ...Sun Fire [TM]v120 / Netra[TM] 120
