Installing Solaris 8 in conjuction with win 98

Before I purchase Solaris 8, I would like to know how should I partition my drive; right now I have Win 98. I have partition magic, but it does not have a Unix format only a linux ext. Should I paratition my drive by leaving free space that is not formated? If I do this will solaris reconize the free space then format it? Does solaris also allow me to make a boot disk like linux does, i do not want to mess with the master boot record.
Thank you
Steve Manzo

Do not partition any space for Solaris, it will do that on its own. Once Solaris is installed, it will set its partition to be the active one and then give you a choice of partitions you'd like to boot.

Forget about all the versions you already have (5.0 through to CS2). They will no longer work and the serial numbers are redundant.
Download the non-activation version of CS2 form the link provided by kglad and use the new non-activation serial number provided at that link. Your existing serial number(s) will no longer work.
Note: there is no guarantee that CS2 will run well on Win 8.1. Try it and see.

  • Step by Step Guide to Install Solaris 10 11/06 With Windows XP on x86 PC

    hi everyone
here is how I fixed my dual boot & internet connectivity failure problems. I'm explaining in detail to help any Solaris newbie (like me) having same problems: ( as I didn't find any REAL Help thru Sun Help Documents / Pages )
My special thanx to " Phil Brown " ( who helped me alott on this )
First to get rid of Dell's Diagnostic Partition & System Recovery Partition I re-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition & at installation I made 4 Partitions of my Dell 9150 ( x86 Intel Pentium Dual Core ) 238 GB Hard Drive.
    (1) C: 100 GB for Windows XP ( NTFS )
    (2) D: 80 GB for Solaris 10 ( RAW )
    (3) E: 50 GB for Linux ( RAW , which I haven't installed yet )
    (4) F: 6 GB (RAW)
    (5) G: 2 GB Un-Allocated Space
Restarted PC after Win XP installation & installed Partition Magic 8 . In PM8 I formatted Solaris partition as FAT 32 (at Solaris installation it changed to Solaris format) & Linux as Linux EXT 3 . Rebooted the PC. I Started Solaris 10 11/06 installation from the DVD I burned from Sun downloads.
    Here's how I installed Solaris 10 11/06 :
    (1) On the next screen after "Loading Stage 2 ... " I selected " Solaris "
    (2) Selected " Solaris Interactive (default) installation
    (3) Hit "enter" to accept proposed Windows configuration screen it displayed

When it was fully up, the Internet was working right away. Restarted again to check Windows. Selected " Windows " at reboot screen & Windows was working just fine.
It took me few allnighters to figure these out, I hope these will helpful to Solaris newbies like me. Still I can't figure out ... How to install any software (obviously designed for Solaris 10 (x86) ) onto Solaris, but thats a different issue.

"A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a Linux fdisk partition is not supported"
It might not be supported, but it works fine for me on my thinkpad :-) .
    redhat/solaris/xp.
You can't just use the linux grub, though, because it won't understand
solaris 'slices within partitions'. You need to get Solaris to install
grub itself (in fact, you can't stop it doing so, which is rather unfair),
and then add in the linux * xp entries to Solaris's /boot/grub/menu.lst
(== grub.conf) to get it to pick up fedora & xp. Chainloading xp worked
fine for me. Chainloading RHEL4/5 doesn't, so I had to cat the grub.conf
from red hat on to the end of solaris's menu.lst. Stick red hat's grub.conf
on a USB pen or just write it down before putting Solaris on, otherwise you'll
have to boot linux rescue of a red hat CD in order to get hold of it after
    Solaris's grub takes over.

  • Why i can't install itunes on my PC with win 7 pro 32 bit ?

    dear apple.
Could you tell me how to install itunes 10 or 11 on my pc with win 7 pro 32 bit ?
when i try to installing itunes my PC has appear error so i can't complet install itune on my PC
Im trying many time but it just send me error and i cant finish installing itunes
So could you tell me how to fix that ?
    Thanks
    Jonny

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Trying to install solaris on my laptop with no success...

Tried to install either sol-10-u9-ga-sparc-dvd.iso or sol-11-exp-201011-ai-sparc.iso on my laptop that's got both windows 7 and openSuse installed. I can open the files both with magic disk and undisk. All they do is show me the files that are within the iso of each, but I can't seem to boot. Hell, I can't even copy the images to a disk as the software says it can't! I really don't want to as I have magic ISO that allows me to mount the files as a virtual disk, but as I open those drives, I get the same ol' file contents. I'm expecting the installation wizard to just magically open up, but that's not happening. Can someone shed some light on this problem?
    Daniel

Ok. I reburned a DVD making a correct image file unlike the first disk I made. Apparently I thought I did it right the first time. I just tried some other way and found that is the right way. Now I was able to boot and the disk installed Solaris "supposedly". Now on the GRUB there is no choice for booting Solaris, so thought I should boot from the DVD. This made the computer try to reinstall Solaris. Does anyone know what I can do next?
And now for some reason the computer won't recognize my external HD.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

  • How to install Arch for dual-boot with Win 7 (on 2 hard drives)?

    Hello,
the TLDR first: how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for 2 hard drives to dual-boot Arch (64 bit)and Win 7 (64 bit)?
Long version: So, I have the following hard drive & partition layout:
On my first hard drive (250 GB big) I have: Win 7 64 bit, all the programs for Windows and of course the EFI partition
My second hard drive is 1 TB big and formatted in NTFS and it only contains data. It has 2 partitions, one is about 750 GB big and used for simple storage.
Sidenote 1: sometimes my disk management (Windows' own gparted) shows either the little disk or the big one as disk 0. Don't know what exactly this means, but I have never ever experienced any problems whatsoever during use.
Sidenote 2: the UEFI motherboard (ASRock H67M) cannot boot into Legacy mode.
I want to install Arch on a ~200 GB partition on the second hard drive (the one with 1 TB). (click here if you want to see a screenshot) I am posting this because I am confused with how exactly I should deal with the whole "2 hdds & UEFI" thing.
So how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for this setup?
For partitioning I suppose I would have to use fdisk or cgdisk. I used cgdisk before and found it to be straightforward. Then, because I have experienced my fair share of problems with rEFInd, I'd like to use GRUB.

First thing you should do is become familiar with your motherboard.
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/manual.asp?Model=H67M
This will probably help you out in understanding the sidenote 1 thingie (hdd's on sata3 and/or sata2 connectors)
As on sidenote 2, according to the manual it seems to be possible to boot legacy mode,  see Storage Configuration.

  • Installing Solaris 10 on X2100 with 1TB drive

I am trying to install the latest Solaris 10 (X86) on an Sun X2100. The installation fires up fine until it tries to set up the hard drive and then it fails with the following error message:
    FILE SYSTEM CREATION FAILED
COULD NOT CHECK OR CREATRE SYSTEM CRITICAL FILE SYSTEMS
The installation then stops and I go to the shell. The drive in the machine is a 1TB Western Digital SATA. Has anyone ever run into this problem or know a way to troubleshoot this? I have 10 machines that I need to configure. One would think that Solaris would easily install on a Sun box.
    Thanks for any help!

They have an onboard RAID controller but when I looked at the BIOS setting it is not enabled to use RAID. I have 2 1TB drives in the machine and the install throughs the error I mentioned above. It appears to have partitioned the disk and set up the slices though. I know this because I can swap the drives and look at the backup drive after the install fails via format and it looks like it has the correct label on it and it.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Installing Solaris 10 with Windows XP

    Hi,
I have an existing Windows XP installation, and want to install Solaris 10 on the same hard drive, for which I have created an extra primary partition. However, the installation seems to want to take over the whole hard drive, so I am a bit hesitant to proceed.
Is there a simple guide to installing Solaris 10 to coexist with an existing Windows NT/2000/XP installtion?
(If I am posting this to the wrong forum, please forgive my ignorance, and kindly point me to the correct one - it is my first time here)
    Thanks and Regards,
    Martin

Having the partition at the end of the disk shouldn't be the big problem, I often place the partition at the begining as I used to do with linux...
I really don't know if there is a restriction for the solaris loader to be at the first cilinders (maybe yes, that's why I put it at the begining)....
but the point here is to have some unallocated space... so try it out... if for some reason the solaris loader doesn't work your system could be screwed up (no booting anywhere) but if that happens the solution is quite simple: to restore the MBR from Windows (recovery console booting from CD)....

  • Solaris 8 on IA with Promise Ultra100

    Hello,
i'm a newbie and i have an installation problem.
How can i install Solaris 8 on IA with a
    promise ultra100 controller-card.
    Can everyone help me?
    T. Wrobel

That doesn't work because there's no solaris driver
for the promise ide controller (these promise ide
controllers are not 100% pci-ide compliant and need
special driver support). Ask promise for such a
    solaris driver.
Most mainboards come with a PCI-IDE compliant
controller on the mainboard's chipset. Connect the
hard disk drive to that controller and solaris can
    use the disk drive.

  • Unable to install Solaris 10 for intel on IDE hard disk?

I was trying to install solaris on an 80 GB IDE HDD with
AMD 32 bit ,XP2000 cpu, 1024 MB RAM using a DVD rom
drive with the first/second solaris os install CD.
BUT after 2nd CD , i got the message 'Short Read/Read Error'
after the GRUB boot loader screen.
Repeated after formatting disk using Red Hat linux (linux installed successfully on same disk/machine without problems) but even then
when i retried installing solaris 10, it failed with same error.
Same set of CDs installed successfully on intel xeon server with
1 GB RAM, 32 GB SCSI HDD.
Does solaris install on IDE hard disks on intel 32 bit PCs?
    pl help/

Sometimes it's possible to use drivers for older Solaris x86 systems
to install the latest Solaris x86 release.
    http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/family/model/2543.html?submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us
To do that, you have to modify HP's ITU floppy. For Solaris 10 x86,
rename the DU/sol_2X directory on HP's floppy to DU/sol_210 .

  • How to install Solaris 10 with Win XP on 2nd Hard Drive

    hi everyone,
I'm totally new to Solaris. As an enthusiast, I wants to install Solaris 10 on my Win XP PC's 2nd Hard Drive(40GB, empty) from Solaris 10 DVD.
I need help from how to format 2nd Hard Drive to how can I configure the PC so it asks me which OS to load every time.
I will highly appreciate everyone's help as I've just joined SDN. Many Thanx in advance, Jags

Happened upon this post while searching for an answer to something else and figured I would give my 2 cents on what you are trying to do so as to offer you some other ideas, as in stuff I have done personally in similar situations, just in case the other suggestions don't work out (and to avoid repartitioning your main hdd if it is your ONLY computer with an OS you have available).
Assuming you have a standard tower or mid-tower with at least 1 free 5 1/4" bay open, and if your motherboard doesn't support booting from a slave drive, and if you prefer a hardware solution so your OS installs are isolated from each other to be certain no corruption happens, like I personally do*. Then you may consider a pair of key lock internal hard drive racks (newegg search "hard drive rack ide" or sata). You would need at least 1 free 5 1/4" bay for the rack mount, then place the hard drives in their housings, each set as master, and you can stick in which ever OS drive you want, turn the key, then boot up (I recommend storing drives not in use in some large anti-static bags for protection). If you have 2 open slots, like I did on my tower, then you can connect both to the same cable and leave both in at all times. Just make sure ONLY 1 drive is keyed "on" at a time, or else you will get errors due to duplicate masters set. Also make sure you ONLY turn the keys when the system is OFF, the racks do NOT make the drives hot-swappable, it is only to offer an easier solution for using multiple hard drives on one PC so you don't have to open the case all the time and potentially damage the pins or the drives when switching them out.. Also you may need longer cables depending on the motherboard controller placement and the size of your tower, 80 wire 40pin if you are dealing with IDE (when you get longer I've noticed less 80 wire and more slower 40 wire cables). As always when dealing with the actual hardware, be extra careful, make sure power is off and PC is unplugged, touch the PC power supply if you don't have better solutions such as anti-static mat/wrist band, etc. You probably know all of this, but just making sure.
*I lost a lot of data one of the first times I tried an open source OS many years ago (some Linux distro, I forget which), I tried to repartition my windows 98 drive, it worked fine for about a week booting between the two, then most my personal windows files suddenly were random sizes and random folders ended up full of garbage files with garbage file names among other peculiar things.. If I partition a drive I generally only do it BEFORE I put data on it or install OS's.. or at least make CERTAIN that I have adequate methods for restoring my OS and personal files (such as imaging my OS install to a larger drive temporarily, etc)..
Anyway, was just offering some possible alternatives to repartitioning your main OS drive.. -TCP

  • Install solaris 8 with win98

I am trying to install solaris 8 in my computer. I already have win98 installed. I would like to continue using win 98. I have one disk. I need to know how to install solaris without overwritting my win98 Os.
    Thank you in advance

    Hi,
I have a 15 GB harddisk. The first 7 GB partitioned and formatted for Windows. Then I installed windows. Next step was to partition (for example with TomsRTBT) the last 8 GB as a linux swap partition. It's unbelivable but this works, because after booting from the Solaris CD the installation program recognices the linux swap partition as Solaris partition. Then with the installation program you can partition the linux swap partition as Solaris needs it (divide it into slices 0 to 7 / c0t0d0s0, c0t0d0s1 and so on). After installing Solaris there is a Solaris bootmanager so you can choose what partition (Windows or linux) to boot from.
    Hope this helps. Bye

  • Install win 7 on pc with win 8.1

i just got this 110-430 pc with win 8.1 installed. i replaced a 500gb sata drive with a 1tb sata drive. i reinstalled win 8.1 using a non hp install disk. unfortunately it installed it's own bios. i flashed the bios with the update from the hp site. i reinstalled win 8.1 using hp recovery disks. after several days of usage i realized i did not like win 8.1. i set the bios to boot from disc and disabled fast boot and safe boot. i had a new win 7 microsoft disc and booted from that. i did a clean install. after a couple of hours of stopping and starting and doing installation stuff it went to the starting windows screen. and sat. and sat forever. now windows never starts, not even in safe mode. the machine will not boot from anything but the hard drive. it will not boot from the win 7 disc. it will not boot from either of the win 8.1 recovery discs i have. it will not boot from a disc that will nuke the hard drive and let me start over. any help will be appreciated. thanks in advance.

it appears the key is f11. so i'm able to restore win 8.1. how do i get win 7 to install properly?

After doing this my sound blaster z worked, I also had the recon 3d and it worked as well after doing this. Hope this helps man.
