  • Solaris, ASM, Dell T300 IO problem

    Hi,
I have a new Dell T300 system with SATA drives and have installed Solaris 10/09 on it and oracle 10.2.0.2. I have restored a database backup to the ASM (2 disks in the group) and am trying to recover the database. Each archive log is taking a long time to restore.
The CPU is idle, the disk io is low but I am seeing this from iostat -cx

In this state the disk is unresponsive, I created a zfs pool on another slice and it hangs whilst the figures look like this . I am performing a find . -name '*' -print and it waits for ages then blurts out a block of filenames then waits again . I think that whenever the log file being restored changes the zfs springs into life and the svc_t time and io rates come back to what I would expect.
I am trying to work out where the problem lies. Is it hardware on the drive controller of the new dell, is it solaris 10/09 (I haven't run oracle on this before) or is it a combination of ASM and the above.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to diagnose the problem?

    Now thats better.
the archive logs are applying in seconds as opposed to minutes and look at the disk stats for comparison.

  • Dell E7450 keyboard problem

I recently purchased an E7450 in Turkey and right arrow/end button made a different clicking sound than the other keys -right out of the box-. I wasn't particularly concerned until (after about 1.5 months of use) the key dislodged and I saw that the connector underneath was broken.
I called Dell Support (which is supposed to provide next day on-site service) and I was expecting a call and a visit the next day. However it has been 2 weeks now and today (in response to my enquiry) I was told that they do not have any keyboards in stock, it is expected to ship from abroad and they can not give me an expected repair date.
I am exteremely disappointed with the level of service particularly:
    - not a single keyboard being in stock in the whole country (Turkey)
    - not being informed about the progress and not being provided with an expected repair date

Update on the issue: It has been 34 days now and finally a technician arrived - albeit with a wrong part! So it has been almost 5 weeks now without any solution from Dell.
It is a great machine, unfortunately I can not say the same thing about the service. I think anyone considering purchasing a Dell Latitude should be aware that even with a small problem their machine might be out of use for a prolonged period.

there are security levels for wpa connection. such as low- normal - high ( 64 bit -128 bit -256 bit )
if you select 64 bit secure method, you need to enter 8 characters for password. if you enter 7 and save and exit, some computers can connect but some not. make sure you have 8- 16- 32 characters and entered correctly.
to check if it's password issue, disable the secure connection and try again. if it doesn't work, we can try some other solutions.

  • Problems installing Solaris 10 on Dell PowerEdge 800

    Hi,
I am experiencing some trouble when I attempt to install Solaris 10 on a Dell PowerEdge 800. It is equipped with two RAID disks controlled by a Dell CERC SATA 1.5/6ch (according to the BIOS).
The installation program reports that it cannot write to the disk. This happens when it is about to start installing files. Tried setting it to a single volume and disable RAID. Same thing. Read another article saying something about disabling IDE, well it doesn't seem to help ...
    Any hints?

I have the same problem on a dell 750 with the SERC controller. I can add some more information but if you get a solution I would appreciate the detail.
    1) If I install Solaris via the SERC in RAID 1 mode then the alarm on the SERC goes off as soon as I start to write to the disk.
    2) I bypassed the SERC and installed on a single disk straight off the motherboard. Time the install crashed at the same point but this time the error message told me that the first available cylinder was number 3! Ah
    3) I reconnected the disk via the SERC, rebuilt the RAID array and made a mistake. I created a RAID 0 (striped) array and installed the software starting from cylinder 3. I got a complete solaris install that rebooted fine and is fully working.
BUT I NEED A MIRRORED SYSTEM SO
    4) I rebuild the machine again this time RAID 1 and again the crash occured at exactly the same point i.e. as soo as I start to write to the disk.
Whether or not DELL / Adaptec support Solaris should not be an issue. This is a BIOS configurable RAID controller that can be fully serviced (e.g. disks replaced) from the BIOS. The system sees the array as a disk via the controller and indeed it is seeing it.
The SERCs own data configuration data should be on sectors which are not visible to solaris VIA the SERC so we shouldnt be able to damage them but I suspect that this may not be the case.
I suspect that the answer is in the partition layout and who or what creates them (I dont mean the Solaris slices but the FDISK partitions)
To make matters worse, since I need the machine working I went back to disks straight of the motherboard and configured again and used metadevices to set up a fully mirrored systemas I have done many times before on sparc (but never on Solaris x86)
This worked fine but I thought that I would test bootability in the event of disk failure. There isnt any!
if disk 1 fails then the motherboard wont accept disk 2 unless you swap the cables and move it do disk 1 and by then the boot sectors are wrong for the address of the device. I can probably solve this by building both disks in slot one but who wants a mirrored server that you have to open up and move a cable when the disk fails. I think I may have to ditch SATA and go back to SCSI !

  • Problems installing Solaris 10 rel. 1/06 on Dell PowerEdge 2850

    Hello,
Tried to install - Solaris does say "No disks".
Wanted to use Sun's driver for LSI PERC 4e/Di RAID contoller which is onboard, so I made the diskette according to instructions. The driver is for Solaris 10 3/05 and there seems to be no new one for 1/06 release.
Used option 5 in the menu [Apply driver updates].
It read the floppy, then went successfully thru the questions stage and then displayed a dialog box saying that there are no disks. Disks are there (2X73GB) as RAID 1 and visible to BIOS.
Tried to specify boot option "acpi-user-options=2" in the GRUB. Then it fails to mount the floppy drive which is the only way to add the ITU driver.
    Please, help.
    Thanks in advance.

    </td></tr></table>
Yeah, I knew this was going to happen...
    This is bug 6312400:
Synopsis: ps/2 floppy is not enumerated when acpi is disabled or not supported
    http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6 312400
Unfortunatelly, there's no fix available at this time for bug 6312400, neither
in Solaris Express, nor in Solaris 10 u1.
    <table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
which is the only way to add the ITU driver.
    </td></tr></table>
Unless this is changed between OpenSolaris / Solaris Express / Solaris Nevada and Solaris 10 Update 1, it is possible to add (one &#91;*&#93;) ITU driver
    from an optical media.
Now all you have to do is figure out how to convert the ITU floppy to an
    ITU CD-{R,RW}.
Have a look at the "build" script, function "make_itu_cd_image()"
    contained here: http://www.tools.de/solaris/itu/
It builds an ITU CD ISO9660 image with RockRidge, using mkisofs.

  • Solaris on x86 Dell Laptop - keyboard driver!

    Hello,
As some of you may have a Dell Laptop I am asking if anyone has
had any success installing Solaris 8 for Intel. If you have please
    drop me a line.
So far I have worked my way past the hangs during the install's
configuration of /dev. I had to remove all references to cardbus in
the "Edit Device" settings of the device configuration assistant.
But then I hit the second problem where the first keypress at the
language selection window sends repeating characters until the keyboard
buffer is full. In other words it goes nuts because the Solaris driver
does not support the Dell Latitude CPi laptop keyboard. I know it is
not a supported configuration but I have little option since Sun are
no longer interested in supporting laptops in Solaris 8.
I already know there is a USB keyboard workaround but I dont
fancy myself hauling around a seperate keyboard just so I can use
    Solaris 8.
More specificallly I am looking for driver settings to make the
existing keyboard driver work or an alternative keyboard driver to solve the
issue. Sun can you help out here?
Any suggestions appreciated, especially some input from Sun.

    Hi knightweb,
Did you checked the BigAdmin center to know if your box is compatible / known to work ?
The installation program says your drive is RO ? Are you installing from a CD ? If yes, be sure that the disk choosed to the installation is not the CD drive (I don't know Dell 6350 anyway)
Did you tried to broke the last partition if there's one with fdisk ?

    Hello All,
    I'm having trouble installing Solaris 10(x86) u4 8/07 on a new Dell OptiPlex 755.
I have also tried installing opensolaris 9/07 Express Dev snv_70b with the same issue.
I tried disabling all unnecessary hardware in the BIOS as well.
After GNU GRUB loads and I select Solaris install after about 20 dots.... I get:

I am only installing Solaris 10 - no other OS will be on the HD.
Is there any hope for getting SolX installed on this machine or should I return this hardware and by a different model? I have to build 2 pc's with SolX for development boxs.

  • Installing Solaris 10 via external CD drive on Dell Latitude D800 Laptop

Hello all, I am trying to install Solaris 10 via external CD drive on Dell Latitude D800 Laptop. After the GRUB menu it begins to load, displaying the " . . . . . ." and hangs about 1/4 way accross the screen. When attempting the install from a DVD instead of a CD the installation hangs on the same screen even sooner. Has anyone encoutered this problem?

    Hello Alex,
no, you can't use USB devices on SPARC as boot device.
The OBP (even updated ones) contains only support for the USB keyboard, but none for USB mass storage (which requires a device driver). The integrated USB ports are for slow devices like keyboard and mouse.
Using an external SCSI DVD-ROM works. Another choice is an installation via network.

  • Trouble when install solaris 10x86 on dell dimension 9100

I just got my new dell dimension 9100 and I tried to install Solaris 10 on it but it didn't work. I could not type at all when the OS asked me what option do I want to install. It seems like the Solaris could not recognized the motherboard or something like that, that's why the keyboard didn't work. The new dell 9100 only has USB port, no ps/2 and other ports.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
    Much appreciate,
    -Andy

Unfortunately I think it has to do with a combination of a buggy driver and/or buggy chipset - the 8400 had the same problems - same problem occurs on NetBSD as well.
The best solution is to unplug the keyboard and re-connect it; IIRC, do it when the kernel is loading or just before, you'll see lights flicker on the keyboard when the USB module is initialising - it appears that is when things go all pear shaped.
