Installing Solaris 9 with other Operating Systems x86

Hi, I am new to Solaris world. I want to install solaris 9 on my home computer on which I've already installed Windows XP and RedHat Linux 9. I have a few questions regarding the installation process.
(a) Is a primary partition necessary for installing Solaris 9 (I have only one primary partition and free space in extended partition)? Is there a way to boot Solaris 9 from a logical drive in the extended partition?
(b) Will choosing the default option on the Solaris installation fdisk screen erase my previous partitions?
I will appreciate if anybody care to answer.

hi sulemankm
solaris needs a primary partition, booting from a logical drive won't work.
for very detailed information take a look at

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.

Yes, but you must get Snow Leopard from AppleCare.    Be sure to tell them which model you have.  I have the exact same model, and twice they sent me the wrong discs under AppleCare.

I guess it's not on your packaging because the software was sold before Vista existed.

  • Firefox prompted me to download an incompatible update that its website claims is compatible with my operating system (Mac OS 10.4.11). Why prompt an incompatible download AND claim it is compatible?

I have an iMac and use OS 10.4.11 & Firefox 3.6.19. Firefox prompted me to download an update (to 7.0.1). I looked up the system requirements on your website, and it stated the update is compatible with OS 10.4.11. But after I downloaded and installed the update, it failed to work on grounds of incompatibility. Hence 2 questions: (1) Why did Firefox prompt me to download an incompatible update? (2) Why did your website claim the update is compatible with my operating system when it is not?

Sorry, it's because Firefox 4+ are only compiled for the Intel processors.
There is a separate project for PPC Macs called Ten Four Fox. You might give it a spin when you're tired of 3.6.

  • HELP!! Authorization in the same laptop with different operation systems

My BF installed Win 7 operation system on his laptop yesterday and re-authorized it when he used iTunes. However, when he finished authorization, a dialog block showing that "*Including this one, you have authorised two computers out of your available 5*" appeared; what's worse, when he connected his iPhone to the laptop, it deleted all the bought apps in the iPhone, instead of synchronizating.
I also want to install Win 7 operation system, but I'm afraid that the same thing would happen again (to my iTouch).
We're quite confused that why the authorization in the same laptop with different operation systems is counted as two times. Friends who know please tell us whether this is the case.. If not, please tell us how to deal with it as we frequently re-install operation system for quicker operation.

It's the *operating system* that is authorised, not the particular user profile or the hardware. Before upgrading/reinstalling deauthorise and you won't run out...

  • I need help with my operating system

    Okay, little bit of background:
I bought the iMac second hand from a family friend who we no longer have contact with, the operating system etc was already installed.
The disk drive on the mac is broke (I dont have the disks anyway, so it would be no use)
I never purchased the operating system, like I said, it was pre-loaded.
A few programmes weren't running correctly and the computer was just generally running slowly, so I decided to just restore the system as there was no important data on it and it would run faster in the end, and I figured the programmes would run properly again once restored.
Anyway, I unknowingly deleted the operating system in the process of the restore (I thought it would only delete personal data like it does on my windows PC)
I have no restore disk (a broken disk drive anyway), my apple ID was not used to buy the operating system, so therefore it cant be used to restore the operating system, I also never backed up the harddrive externally so it cant be reinstalled from that.
My problem: I have no operating system and no way of recovering it. I read about Mavericks and because its free, I decided to try and download it, but with no operating system, the mac can only run 'Safari' and wont save things I try to download to the harddrive (it just says theres no space and the download doesnt happen). I also tried to access the App Store from Safari to try to download OS X lion on my apple ID, but once again, when using Safari on a mac without an operating system, it is very restrictive and I cant access the download page.
I have no idea what to do and live miles away from the nearest apple store.
Thanks in advance for any help provided by anyone.
    Jordan.
    Additional information:
Its a 2007 iMac which was running OS X Lion 10.7.4 (I think, it was definitely Lion though).

Ah. Well, then you have an itty-bitty problem. You need to backup your files to start with. You will need your retail Snow Leopard installer DVD which your friend should have provided to you. If he did not then ask him to bring it to you. It belongs to you along with the original distribution discs that came with computer when it was new.
Do the following once you have the Snow Leopard DVD:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Upgrading to Lion
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
After you sign into your App Store account with your Apple ID click on the Redeem option under Quick Links to download your copy of Lion.
As an aside to this: All actual 2007 iMacs are able to run Mavericks. So rather than buying Lion you may prefer to upgrade to Mavericks which is Free.

  • My new shuffle won't work with my operating system

I was really pleased to be given a new shuffle for my birthday, but it won't work with my operating system. I feel disgusted and cheated; I have been using macs for years and don't see why I should have to buy a new one in order to use a piece of Apple technology. It's not good enough to say that the operating system requirements are clearly stated, as the person who bought me the shuffle didn't know that. I am so furious that I am thinking of going back to pcs next time I buy. Apple really should get their act together, because various forums I have consulted suggest that a lot of other people feel the same.

    Feel better now?
We are all users here just like yourself so we cannot do anything for you besides making some logical suggestions to you. So if the person had bought you some 3rd party software that only worked with Leopard and/or Snow Leopard would by be just as furious? Just curious.
You don't have to buy a "new one" to use your new Shuffle, just upgrade your OS. Are you using a PowerPC or Intel Mac Mini? If the latter just go buy a copy of Snow Leopard, install it on your computer and download the latest iTunes. Problem solved. If it is a PowerPC look around and find and install a copy of Leopard.

  • How to fix "A 32-bit agent is installed on 64-bit operating system" alerts

    Hi
We have installed SCOM 2007 R2 CU1 in our environment (by properly following installation sequence given on the CU1 web page). After manually installing agent update of CU1 on 64 bit servers, we are getting alerts "A 32-bit agent is installed on 64-bit
operating system" and the status of these 64-bit servers remains in Warning state. We have manually uninstalled and reinstalled 64-bit agent as well as 64-bit CU1 agent update but still the status is in Warning state. We can not completely uninstall cluster
node agent, remove it from the console and reinstall agent from scratch because SCOM R2 is not allowing to do clean uninstall and reinstall of agent on cluster nodes.
If anyone faces similar problem and have fixed it then please let me know the solution so i can also fix the issue.
    Thank you

This new(er) monitor is set to generate when the registry key "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft
Operations Manager\3.0\Setup" is found on a 64-bit Windows server. We have several alerts like this as well, but found it had little to do with the CU1 patch and
more to do with rolling out the updated Operations Manager management pack (v6.1.7599.0) at around the same time as well as the server having had a 32-bit agent previously installed at one point or another. We are looking into simply removing the 32-bit
key, but have not done so just yet as we need to test this theory on a dev server first. Of course, to be safe, we could always uninstall the agent and patch, delete the keys manually, and then reinstall.
    Hope that helps.

  • Does New MacBook Pro 15" Come With 2 Operating Systems?

I apologize for my ignorance, I haven't used a Mac in some time and my knowledge of computers is very limited.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro 15" model and it came with 3 disks. Besides the "Applications Install DVD", one of the other disks says "Mac OS Install DVD" and the other one says "Mac OS X Snow Leopard".
Am I to believe that this laptop came with 2 operating systems, or two versions of the same system, and if so, why?
I'm thinking Snow Leopard is the latest version and if that's the case, why would they even include the other one?
    I'm so confused, lol.
Thanks so much in advance and again, please pardon my ignorance.

    yes.
One more question, please. Can I give the Snow Leopard disk to my daughter to install on her Mac, or is that taboo?
if you bought a regular SL DVd then this is not allowed. you can buy a family pack and use it on up to 5 computers in the same household.

  • Creating .app folders in other operating systems?

I'm working on a cross-platform game and am hoping to create an OS X port of it. I don't have access to a mac, and so am unable to use the xcode tool for creating .app folders. Are there any tools for creating .app folders on other operating systems? I'd prefer Linux, but can also use windows if required.
    Thanks
    Nathaniel

Well, .app bundles are specific to Cocoa and Carbon applications... The closest way to make such applications is to use GNUStep (which is an open Cocoa) but it means to rebuild the whole app to make it work with Cocoa/GNUStep...
However, application that are compatible with Mac OS X are not necessarily in .app bundles. Bundles are used for a specific purpose which gather files that the app should have really close, like its interface files (nib) that is used only with Cocoa or Carbon. If your app is neither Carbon nor Cocoa, there's no use in creating a .app bundle it doesn't even exist. And moreover, Xcode (or Project Builder on GNUStep) is the only app that creates .app bundles.
