Installing Solaris Express 11 on a USB stick

Hi,
I am in the process of building a resilient development/testing lab server using 4 SATA disks in a RAIDZ configuration, I want to boot the host SE 11 o/s off a internal USB stick to manage this server, so my question is how do I go about installing SE 11 on a USB stick (persistent not a live image).
Perhaps naively I assumed this would be easy, as Solaris would just see the flash storage as any other storage. What I have attempted is running the live CD, it detected my USB stick and I continued to run through the installer, I choose a "Entire Disk" install, it took an absolute age in doing this, in the process of installing a message/error appeared about the zpool (sorry I should of noted it), but it continued, once complete, I changed the bios option to boot from USB, this resulted in booting what looked like a successful install, but it just sat at the Oracle progress screen about 20 minutes, the one prior to loading the GNOME login page.
I've googled this to no avail, I'm having a hard time in believing nobody has ever tried this before, perhaps for good reason that I seem to be unaware of.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
Jana

There are varieties of methods and ways, options i.e.
1.) From Microsoft Windows (NT i.e. XP (5.x), 6 (Vista) & 7) with the "Open Solaris Live USB creator"; this reported works! Easily and quickly with a graphical user interface transferring *.usb and or *.iso files upon flash drives and memory cards bootably, 'select device / drive and file and click start ; from http://devzone.sites.pid0.org/OpenSolaris/opensolaris-liveusb-creator
2.) With 'usbcopy' under Solaris 11 / Open Solaris and or the 'installgrub' command.; from http://www.milax.org/files/
For an example, from within (Open) Solaris a command statement (without the quotes) such as;
In these 'device' is substitute for the actual special device (file) assigned to the usb flash drive, again as an example if it were assigned "c0t2d0s3" and or "/dev/rdsk/c0t2d0s3"; its device "/dev/rdsk/c0t2d0 with two additional, 2 place fields denotating specifics, such as 's3' for a slice or 'p0' the entire flash device for example purpose, partitioning
#> "fdisk -d /dev/rdsk/'device'" however to partition, and leave space for other partitions
or
#> "fdisk -d -B /dev/rdsk/'device'" for a partition using the entire space available;
then
#> "dd if=sol-11-exp--live-x86.usb of=/dev/rdsk/'device bs=512" for example to copy the Solaris 'image' to the flash drive
and then finally, finishing it, installing the grub boot loader, to boot and or 'start' from. i.e. load and initialize (executing) the operating system, would be;
#> "installgrub -m /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/'device'" would install grub to the 'device' for 'booting', having it startable ; and or plainly "installgrub -m /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c0t2d0s3"
Hopelly helpfull, GOD willing.

NEED HELP! -installing Camera raw presets from USB Stick.
I am attempting to install the Camera Raw Presets.
It says to put them into User Name/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings...
When I get to CameraRaw the ONLY folders in there are CameraProfiles & Lens Profiles.
I have searched everywhere looking for a CameraRaw-Settings folder and cannot find one.
I have latest version of CameraRaw installed and still no settings folder.
I even attempted to find it by looking in camera raw where it has saved the custom settings I made as presets and it shows that they are saved but will not show me where.
I am using CS5 specifically Photoshop v12.0.4 and Bridge. I have Lightroom 4. I have iMac OS  10.7.3
Do I need to reinstall Camera Raw and how do you do that?
Will I then lose my presets that I made in CameraRaw?
    Thanks for your help

Try seting "-jdkhome xxxxxxxxxx" in the ide.cfg file in your Forte \bin\ directory. Point it to the SDK install directory - that is, make "xxxxxxxxxx" the path to the SDK install.
You seem to be accessing a java.exe that is pointing to a location that is other than where jvm.dll is residing. This may get you to executing the correct java.exe.

    Hello,
first of all: Try to run the HCTS (Hardware
Compatibility Test Suite) first, it's available
    here:
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.htm
    l
This you can run from Windows, and it will list all
hardware that has drivers, and all those, that do not
have drivers (including some public domain drivers).
After that, you have the possibility to install
Solaris WITHOUT a GUI, use one of the two "terminal"
modes. The first Is still a GUI, as it only starts X
and opens a terminal, in which then the installer
runs. The second does NOT start X, but runs the
installer on the console. Try this one, and once you
get through that, you can afterwards figure out the
    settings of the Xserver.Hi ,
i have installed the solaris using console.
Still GUI is not starting, the moniter is switched off when GUI gets started
I used Hardware Compatibility Test Suite, its say that system is supported

  • Can I install Windows 7 from a USB stick even though I have the Superdrive?

I have an iMac 21.5inch from Mid 2010 and it currently runs Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have just purchased the upgrade to Mountain Lion but I have not received the code to install it yet. When I do install it, I'm planning to dual boot my iMac to have Mountain Lion and Windows 7 on it. I have the Superdrive built into the side of the iMac but unfortunately I have run out of discs to burn the official Windows 7 ISO into (from Digital river). The discs cannot be rewritten on because it's a DVD-R so I was wondering if I could install from my 8GB USB stick even though I have a built-in Superdrive. I heard there's an option to do this and I was also wondering if by doing this option, will it automatically put the Windows support software onto it as it says on the second option "Download Windows Support ....."
Also, I have heard my specific iMac can experience a black screen when installing Windows and you need to download some stuff and put it in your USB as it says on the article. Is it possible for me to make my USB bootable by doing the first option in the Bootcamp Assistant as well as put the Windows support software I downloaded from the black screen article into it?

Read the Boot Camp Installation Manual http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6.pdf.

  • Is it possible to install the reader on a usb-stick

I would like to copy files in pdf-portefolio for the clients on an usb-stick. As usually people do'nt use the latest version and are anxoius to install programms, I thougt to put the latest version of the reader also on the stick (with a autorun-function opening the reader)

Can not be done any longer. Giving people programs that run from a usb stick without them knowing or installing the software on their computer is certainly a security risk.

  • I re-installed Mountain Lion from a USB stick, and now my Apps can't be downloaded.  The App store indicates that the Apps are already installed, but that is not the case. Now what :)

I re-installed Mountain Lion from scratch of a USB stick, and now my Apps in the App store ca not be installed, the App store indicates that they are already installed, but that is not the case.  Now what?

Ok, this is somewhat of a better work around I've found:
Starting in the Australian iTunes store, I go through the process of signing into the UK iTunes store up until the point it asks for my credit card information.
I then click the 'X' in the top left of iTunes to exit the store.
Now when I click on my Apps Updates button it shows me what UK Apps I have that are available to update.
You can't download these as at this point I've changed the store I'm viewing, but haven't officially switched accounts. Not to worry.
I write down the names of the UK Apps to update.
Then, use the 'search store' field in the top right of iTunes to search for one of the Apps.
Once you've found it, click to buy it / download it.
iTunes recognises that the App is already in your account and downloads it again for free….
… now I'm HOPING that that App is now fully within my Australian account… unfortunately only time will tell once there is a new update for it.
    I'll let you know.

  • USB ADSL Modem Driver for Huawei MT841 for Solaris Express

    Hello Everyone
After initial hiccups of installing Solaris Express in a multiboot system and partition mania,i finally installed Solaris Express on my system.First i installed Developer Edition and upgraded it to Express thinking that Developer Edition doesnt have networking capabilities.
All said and done now i'm unable to access the internet.I'm using Broadband USB ADSL Modem from Huawei, type MT841 with four ethernet ports and one USB port.I dont have ethernet card so i use USB port to connect.
The thing is the modem cd doesnt have a driver for Solaris, but for linux it does.
Where can i find the driver for ADSL modem and how to install it,if i find it?
Is there any alternate way?Expecting a reply(because my last post about multiboot didnt)
    Thanks in advance
    C.S.Shreeram

    Problem Solved!
Un-installing all USB modem device drivers, disconnecting all USB devices and removing all USB host controllers and hubs from the Vista device manager and then rebooting the notebook MADE NO DIFFERENCE.
However when I received the new Thomson SpeedTouch 330 USB ADSL modem drivers on CD-ROM from the manufacturer the modem installed immediately.
I can only assume that there is a problem with the download of Release 4.1 of the Windows Vista driver for the SpeedTouch 330 from this web-page:
    http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/codepages/content3.asp?c=7&ProductID=471
... as the drivers on the CD-ROM from Thomson work - but their web download of the driver for the SpeedTouch does not.
The problem was with the driver for Windows Vista - the laptop and modem now work correctly - as they should have done at the first installation attempt!
    Thanks for your help.

Configuration: MacBook Air 11" (late 2010)

If it mounts on the Desktop but does not show up in the boot manager when you OPTION boot, then it's defective.
Do you happen to have an 8 GB USB flash drive around? If you do, then you can try cloning the stick to the other flash drive. Sometimes this will work, sometimes not.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the spare USB flash drive. Source means the Apple USB stick.

  • PDA Host USB (Solar Express CF Card)

Am not sure of interest.  But I've tried the new Solar Express Compact Flash USB host card (currently in an IPAQ 210 PDA, running WinMobile 6).
This worked like a charm with LabView PDA DAQbase sample code and the NI USB-6009.
I really bought this for use in a non-hosting USB-PDA, and will try in a Axim X50v.
For the record the IPAQ 210 has USB Host functionality built-in, but initially proper cables were not available, these are now currently available and the USB-6009 does work with them.  Unfortuneately, I could only get to work if the cables route thru a mini-USB hub first.  This is not necessary with the CF card.
In both the CF and the IPAQ native USB hosting mode, no additional power is needed to run the 6009, though I've yet to check battery consumption.  The Solar Express card comes with a USB cable Y-joint which allows feeding additional power to the accessory on USB.  The CF card itself, I believe, is limited to 200 mA draw.
See below links for the Solar Express product.
    http://www.twin-paradox.com/SEPDA.html

I think this works well for the $85 price.  And appears to work with many older PDAs, which is good for hobbyists, and those like me, with old unused ones lying around.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I bought the Solar Express card, but am having some problems getting data.  I notice you are using a 6009, and I am using a 6008.  The 6008 is not specifically listed in the table here, so I wonder if it can be used.  I have everything set up as per the dynamic example in the same link, but when I run my program on the PDA and set the Physical Channels contol to my task I get the following error: "Value passed to the Task/Channel In control is invalid.  Error code: -200428".  I unsuccessfully searched for the error code.  I am just trying to read some AI, nothing fancy.  I have set up the task in the NI-DAQmx Base Task Configuration Utility, but it seems like it is having a problem with that.  Also, I have the code inside an Event structure, but I can't see why that would make a difference.  Attached is my code.  Are you doing anything differently (other than using the 6009)?

  • [SOLVED] Install Arch Linux on USB Stick!

So, here is the deal. I want to install Arch Linux on a USB Stick so I can plug it at any computer and have my system... with me
I've had a little bit experience with Arch so I know a few things about it... used it for a few months before on a real system.
My USB stick is a HighSpeed 17-20 MBPS and it's 16 GB capacity.
So how do I do it?
    Last edited by 1lj4z1 (2012-04-05 07:25:53)

I'm using occasionally Arch installed on HDD-USB, I've just added usb hook to mkinitcpio.conf and removed autodetect (more modules=more hardware supported). So far it worked on 3 different computers (all of them have one main HDD so no grub issues, but it's no biggie if it doesn't boot right away, you can always edit grub on-the-fly by pressing "e")
About USB stick: installing on USB stick is not the same as running it in LIVE mode! Consider yourself warned.
If you just install it you really should read about SSD optimizations because USB flash cells also have limited read/write cycles (actually is less robust and sophisticated than SSD). Something to look at: noatime mount option, disable swap if not necessary, profile-sync-daemon and so on...
1lj4z1 wrote:Well I don't need to chroot, i am running it live. I'll see about mkinitcpio.conf but I can't understand what you mean rebuilding initramfs? What is that exactcly?
It means if you fiddle with mkinitcpio you should run:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
afterwards or bad things will happen
