I've had similiar messages on the Solaris Developer Edition with my machine that uses the rtls driver, and I simply ignored it, as it did still connect to the internet. I can't check it right now, as I'm currently running S10 U3 on that machine. If I remember correctly, I did do a sys-unconfig to try to get rid of some of the messages.

  • How install Solaris 2.5.1 and Windows Together

Hi, Weve a registered copy of Solaris 2.5.1 and we cant install solaris and windows in the same Hard disk.
Ive been trying since two weeks. I cant found a document that help me with this task.
Please, help me with the directions to do that or try to indicate me an internet link to read it.
    Thanks a lot.

OK, this is that I did.
    1. With solaris 2.5.1. boot disk install solaris from CDROM
    2. I do the partition in hard disk, the disk has 3 GB, and make a 940 MB partition for solaris and the rest for Windows
    3. I install solaris in stangalong mode
    4. When I finished solaris installation, it ask me wich partition are going to use to boot de machine.
    5. I format a WINDOWS disk partition to install it.
    6. I transfered the system to the windows partition
    7. Reboot the machine and the solaris still ask me by wich O/S are going to use to boot.
    8. Then, install Windows 95 B version, and when rebbot the machine, the boot manager of salaris dissaper.
    9. With FDISK of windows and put the second partition (solaris) as active, and nothing happens.
Note: I`m using the solaris partition as second one, i mean that the main partition is Windows (is exactly that I did have it).

    Hello,
first of all: Try to run the HCTS (Hardware
Compatibility Test Suite) first, it's available
    here:
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.htm
    l
This you can run from Windows, and it will list all
hardware that has drivers, and all those, that do not
have drivers (including some public domain drivers).
After that, you have the possibility to install
Solaris WITHOUT a GUI, use one of the two "terminal"
modes. The first Is still a GUI, as it only starts X
and opens a terminal, in which then the installer
runs. The second does NOT start X, but runs the
installer on the console. Try this one, and once you
get through that, you can afterwards figure out the
    settings of the Xserver.Hi ,
i have installed the solaris using console.
Still GUI is not starting, the moniter is switched off when GUI gets started
I used Hardware Compatibility Test Suite, its say that system is supported
    by Solaris.
Should i have change BIOS setting to stated the system

  • Install solaris 8 with win98

I am trying to install solaris 8 in my computer. I already have win98 installed. I would like to continue using win 98. I have one disk. I need to know how to install solaris without overwritting my win98 Os.
    Thank you in advance

    Hi,
I have a 15 GB harddisk. The first 7 GB partitioned and formatted for Windows. Then I installed windows. Next step was to partition (for example with TomsRTBT) the last 8 GB as a linux swap partition. It's unbelivable but this works, because after booting from the Solaris CD the installation program recognices the linux swap partition as Solaris partition. Then with the installation program you can partition the linux swap partition as Solaris needs it (divide it into slices 0 to 7 / c0t0d0s0, c0t0d0s1 and so on). After installing Solaris there is a Solaris bootmanager so you can choose what partition (Windows or linux) to boot from.
    Hope this helps. Bye

  • "Can't open boot device" mesage when installing Solaris 10 by cdrom

I am getting the following error message when I try to install Solaris 10 from cdrom:
    "Can't open boot device."
The system I am trying to install to is a SunFire v100.
The boot command I am using is:
    ok boot cdrom - nowin
I have used this cd to successfully install several other v100s without any trouble. I have tried another cd and get the same behavior. I have also tried installing another v100 and get the same error.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Please check the "cdrom" alias.

  • Installing solaris 9 without mouse?

Hello. I have an old ultrasparc U2 kit with dual 333MHz processor. When I obtain this kit it has Linux installed. There is also a sun mouse that looks square and has 3 buttons, but the mouse is very very old (probably more then 7 years old) and extremely difficlut to use, thus I use a new serial mouse and though away the sun mouse.
Later I decide to install solaris 10, failed to start (reason: OBP version too low) I try to install solaris 9. After the first install CD finished, a small 'solaris' system is said to be installed on hdd and system rebooted to go on installation. After reboot, CDE start and the box ask my hostname, and I cannot go on any more.
Because I don't have mouse, I cannot click 'Next'. I can jump to the textfield (by TAB) where I can enter hostname, and I can never jump out of textfield. Press TAB, Enter, space... none of them works. It seems CDE is not like typical Gnome or Windows that you could switch focus by press tab repeatedly.
If there is no way to click 'Next', then I would have to pick up Linux again, which is a trouble for me (for lack of good JRE and Flash player). It's very difficult for me to buy another sun mouse. Any suggestions?

Now I got a bit further. I upgraded OBP by using solaris 9 software CD1, without mouse. Now I have OBP that is compatible with solaris 10
I begin to install solaris 10, the same result: I cannot use mouse to move focus to the first dialog about what language I prefer to use.
it's soo much trouble to work with ultra-sparc ----- every thing are non-standard...

I have no really good answer here..
I guess you are using a Netra T1 AC200, right?
    Some futher questions;
Are you using an internal CD-Rom?
Have you tried the CD-Rom before so you know it works?
What happens if you try "boot cdrom" without inserting any CD? I think the bootpath to the cd-rom looks a bit strange, and testing that would be the easiest way of verifying if its correct or not. If the path is correct you should get a different error if you attemt to boot from a non-existing CD.
Last question; which Solaris 10 version did you download?
    7/M.

  • Attempting to install Solaris 10 on Netra t1 via external DVD-Rom

    Hello Experts,
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on my Netra t1 via external DVD. I connected the DVD-ROM to the scsi port on the back. System recognized the DVD but does not allow me to boot from it. I have done many things without any success. Following are the details:
    System info:
    Netra t1 (UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.25 ME, 1024 MB memory installed,
Ran the scsi test and it doesn't report any issues:
    ok test scsi
    Probe-scsi-all shows the drive:
    ok probe-scsi-all
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0

    Target 4
Unit 0 Removable Read Only device TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M14011009
    devalias also shows as cdrom1:
    ok devalias
    cdrom1 /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2/disk@6,0:f
    cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1/pci@1/ide@e/cdrom@2:f

    ide-cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1/pci@1/ide@e/cdrom@2:f
    ide /pci@1f,0/pci@1/pci@1/ide@e
I created devalias manually also with no help. Following is what I get when I try to boot from it:
    ok boot cdrom1
    Resetting ...
    Netra t1 (UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.25 ME, 1024 MB memory installed,
    Executing last command: boot cdrom1
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2/disk@6,0:f File and args:
    Drive not ready
    Evaluating: boot cdrom1
    Can't open boot device
I verified the DVD and it works just fine. I install the OS with the same DVD on Netra-440 system without any issues.
Please tell me what am I missing here or doing wrong. Please help.

    Sun-worshiper,
Thank you so much for pointing that out. I was loosing it.
Just in case someone else runs into this type of issue:
When you run probe-scsi-all please pay attention to the target. In order to boot from the DVD, I executed the following commands from the ok prompt:
    ok nvalias dvd /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2/disk@4,0:f
    ok boot dvd

  • Getting an error 'Cannot open Boot device' while trying to install Solaris

    Hi,
We were trying to install Solaris * on a Sun Sparc system and the CD rom drive does not seem to get recognised. When we try booting from cd rom we get an error 'Cannot open boot device' .
This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
    Thanks

Cdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
    Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
    hope this helps

  • Install solaris 8 while machine is running

I want to build a clean install on the second drive in our machine. Where can I find info/source on:
dependencies (this will determine the order of installation, compilation, or configuring)
    core packages
    documentation
    minimal builds
    etc.
The machine is on an internal LAN and used primarily for transferring files, compute power, launching remote displays for eda tools. No mail, server, network controller, etc is necessary outside of what is depended on by the necessary packages. The machine is an ultra 60 with both 350MHz procs and 2Gb of memory installed. I think it is currently running solaris 8 7/02, but without a lot of detective work there's no telling how things are structured on there, with the previous admin. He better cross the street if he sees me out in public. He no longer works here...shmuck.
It is currently in heavy useage, and needs to have minimal down time. My time is at a premium as well. This is why I don't use jumpstart. I also want to learn more about the differences between solaris/linux/sparc/x86, so it works out. I have the install discs for 8 7/02, can I extract the core components from this manually?
I can and do read manuals and gratefully appreciate any pointers to where I might find more information that will help expedite my efforts. I am not averse to compiling some of it if I have to, but that is time consuming and affords no performance advantage as the distributed binaries should already be optimized for a standard system. I would rather put new binaries on the new boot drive, as opposed to copying old ones from the current system. I don't trust the integrity of anything on this system.
    TIA
