Installing Sql Server 2014 Management studio problem
Hi,
I installed a full SQL 2014 evaluation ISO on a 64 bit Windows server 2008 R2 machine:
(file name - SQLServer2014SP1-FullSlipstream-x64-ENU.ISO)
On this machine I already have a instance of SQL Server 2008 Express running (with Management Studio).
I try to download on the Management studio either from:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42299
or
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver2014express.aspx
and the download just won't start. Am I missing anything ?
Is the management studio already on the ISO I installed?
Thanks,
Assaf
Your issue not clear you installed the SQL Server 2014 instance and you didn't find the management studio for it or what is the issues please explain more about it

Error installing sql server 2008 management studio express
Hello,
I need to install sql server 2008 management studio express on a sql server 2k8 R2 instance.
First of all, I've downloaded this one from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7593 (for 32 bits).
Once I've the downloaded file I run this file and choose the first option (New sql server stand-alone...) in the installation part. Finally, in the installation type I choose the option 'Add features to an existing instance of SQL Server 2008' with the instance
selected. I push Next and then I get the following error: 'The instance ID is required but it is missing'.
Can anybody help me?
Thanks a lot.
Regards.Hello,
What’s the edition of the SQL Server 2008 R2? If you had installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer edition, you should install “SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools” edition or “SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services” edition.

SQL Server 2014 Management Studio - "The operation could not be completed"
Hi there!
I've recently installed SQL Server 2014 Express Edition to my Windows 8.1 x64 computer. It was working fine for one month or so. Now, when I try to open Management Studio I get the error "The operation could not be completed". A few seconds into
the splash screen. Then the application shuts down.
I don't have any errors or warnings on Event Viewer. Not even any information lines related to SSMS when opening. I've tried to use ProcMon but I can't see any events related to SSMS.exe that could give this result. I've already installed Cumulative Update
2 for SQL Server 2014 with no luck. Also, I've repaired SQL Server installation and even reinstalled this instance with the same outcome.
I know this topic has already been written before but it was related to Windows Server. The response marked as Answer was not applicable to my case. As I said, I'm using Win 8.1 x64.
I'm out of options for now. Can you please give any help?
Thank you so much.Hello,
Before reinstalling Windows, please try the .NET Framework Repair Tool.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135
If the above did not help, you may want to try the automatic repair option.

Hope this helps.

SQL Server 2014 Management Studio expired
Hey guys,
Have an interesting issue with an SQL 2014 Standard installation.
Server has been working fine for over six months, and was installed using an SQL Standard key, but now the Management Studio complains that it has expired. This is also causing issues with SSIS integration software that fails to update.
Have tried re-installing the shared tools, but same error. Have also tried the registry key change for CommonFiles that numerous people have successfully used for 2008 and 2012, but it doesnt seem to work on 2014, or at least our server. Have tried running
the edition update anyway, without luck.
Mgmt Studio works fine from another machine across the network, and SQL server seems to be running fine without errors and says is licensed for Standard as it should.
There are no event log errors or warnings relating to expiration or anything with SQL.
Server is 2012 R2.
Any ideas?
SMHello,
Please back up the registry first, then open the Registry and set
CommonFiles registry value to 3 in HKLM\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\120\ConfigurationState and run Edition upgrade again.
The support article shared by Shanky was initially intended for SQL Server 2008, so you need to change 100 by 120 on the registry key.
Hope this helps.

Silent SQL Server 2008 Management Studio install on Win7
Hi,
Is there a way to suppress Compatibility warning box while silently installing SQL Server 2008 Management Studio install on Win7?
Thanks,
HHi Kugler,
Even I was facing the same issue. It is because you may pending reboots on the target machine.
I also used the cmdline as below:
<PATH of EXE> /Q /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /ACTION=install /FEATURES=SSMS,ADV_SSMS /HIDECONSOLE
Before installation it is better to restart the target machine and start with the installation. -
How to install SQL Server 2014 Documentation
I installed the SQL Server 2014 Management Studio (64bit of course), that came with an empty product help. So I went to
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42557 and downloaded the file from there. Upon opening the file I got an error that the file is corrupt (after several downloads
from different machines). With 7zip I could open the file without any problem. So I copied it to a folder. Now when I want to add the folder to the helper, get error messages:
- You do not have permissions to modifiy content under that location specified for help content store
(C:\Program Data\Microsoft\HelpLibrary2\Catalog\SQL2014)
- Local help store cannot be in folders that should not be accessed by all user accounts on this computer.
Where should I copy this folder that this thing finally works. We live in 2014 and I waist already 30 minutes to get the documentation up and running that should come with the product in the first place.
Please advise (and maybe give me some insight what the people responsible for the SQL 2014 help had in mind with this concept ?)Hi ErnestoMawan,
According to your description, you have downloaded the documentation file and you want to add that documentation for SQL Server, right?
So please follow steps below to add the documentation for SQL Server:
Double-click the self-extracting EXE to extract its contents.
Specify the location for the extracted contents. For example, a network share that is accessible to your destination computer or server.
Run Manage Help Settings. In Windows 7, launch Help Library Manager from Start, All Programs, SQL Server 2014, Help & Community and then clicking Manage Help Settings. Or, launch SQL Server Management Studio, click the Help menu, and select Manage Help
Settings.
In Help Library Manager, click Choose online or local help.
Select I want to use local help and then click OK.
Click Install content from disk and browse to the directory where you unpacked the downloaded EXE.
Select the HelpContentSetup.msha file and then click Open.
Click Next.
Click Add next to the documentation you want to install.
Click Update.
Once Help Library Manager has completed the installation process, click Finish and then click Exit to close Help Library Manager.
For more information about Add or Remove Product Documentation for SQL Server, please refer to the following article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms166022.aspx
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

regards,
harsha.Hello,
Please try deleting the following sub folder to see if this will work:
C:\users\(my profile)\AppData\Local\Microsoft_Corporation
If you can't see AppData folder, you could use following steps to show hidden files:
1. Open an explorer window, hit "ALT-T" choose Folder Options then go to the view tab.
2. Turn on Show hidden files, folders or drives and
disable Hide protected Operating System files (recommended).

Hi All,
I just downloaded AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf file from
http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/55330 to my C:/ Downloads folder. I don't know how to install this AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf file to the Databases (in Object Explorer) of the \SQLEXPRESS of my SQL Server 2012 Management
Studio. Please kindly help, advise and respond.
Thanks in advance,
Scott ChangHi Olaf Helper, Thanks for your response.
As you and https//msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190209.aspx instructed, I tried to attach the AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf file (Using SQL Server Management Studio) to my Databses. After I did Steps 1 & 2, (in Step 3) I clicked on
Add, and tried to locate the AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf file in my C:/Users/e1enxshc/Downloads folder: this mdf file was not there in the "Select the file" box!!!??? I am pretty sure that mdf file has been downloaded into that "Downloads"
folder. I am lost completely. Please kindly help, advise me what it is going wrong in my "Attach" the mdf file to my Databases of SQLEXPRESS, and respond.
Thanks,
Scott Chang

Hi Prashanth,
I cannot find/locate the
http://serverintellect.com/sqlserver/sql-database-attach/ in my internet websites to do the "Attach" task I need badly. Please tell me where I can find/locate/access that website>
Thanks,
Scott Chang
====================================================
P.S. I moved the AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf file to my C:\Temp folder and did the "Add" again. It located the mdf file. I added the AdventureWorks as the name of Database in SQLEXPRESS, then I clicked Add. I got the following fatalerror:

Overlapped I/O error 997 installing SQL Server 2014 Express on Windows Server 2012 R2
I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2014 Express on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system. When I do the install, it fails (several times) with an "Error: 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.". From searching the web, I can see many people
have had this problem with this installer and other non-SQL server installers.
I've tried every solution I can find discussed, but none help with my problems The system is fully updated, with the exception of the KB2538243 (VC 2008 SP1 redist), which is probably failing for the same reason.
I've tried removing several updates mentioned in other articles (KB2918614). I've confirmed that I'm not using a temporary profile.
Does anyone have an idea of how I can solve this issue?
Thanks,
Zack

Installing SQL Server 2014 Express package as ClickOnce prerequisite
I'm using clickOnce and deploying an installer with it.
I have tried various settings. Using SQL Server 2008 Express and SQL Server 2012 Express as prerequisite is all ok (I've dowloaded them and set the option of clickonce "download prerequisites from the same path of app").
Now I'm trying to do the same thing with SQL Server 2014 Express.
Since the SQL Server 2014 Express package isn't alredy done line 2008 and 2012 versiones, I'm trying to create it.
I have done and it seems to work, but while installing it gives error number **-2054422506**. It is a very generic error and I don't understand it.
It appears a pop up saying the installation is stopped because it is an error installing SQL Server Express 2014 and to look the log for more infos.
The log only says:
Installing using command
'C:\Users\VIRTUA~1\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD24F4.tmp\SqlExpress2014\
SQLEXPR32_x86_ITA.EXE' and parameters '/q /action=Install /features=SQL
/instancename=SQLEXPRESS /securitymode=SQL /sapwd=234692Is
/sqlsvcaccount="NT Authority\Network Service'
Process exited with code -2054422506
Status of package 'SQL Server 2014 Express' after install is 'InstallFailed'
So, I've tried to install SQL Server 2014 Express manually, without ClickOnce, and it works. So I think I've made some mess in the xml file of the package.
My package is so build (in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v8.1A\Bootstrapper\Packages\):
\SqlExpress2014
\it
SQLEXPR32_x86_ITA.exe
SQLEXPR_x64_ITA.exe

I've copied the SqlExpressChk.exe file from the SQL Server 2012 Express package, hoping it is the same (2008 and 2012 versions seems the same, so I supposed it also for the 2014).
I've delete the part in package.xml about the publicKey, since I don't know it and, further, I think I don't need it.
In the same file, I've inserted custom parameters, first like in the 2008 and 2012 versions, then doing some attempts (without success).
Did anyone have this problem? How did you have manage it?
**NOTE**: I'm using my clickOnce deploy in an empty virtual machine, so there aren't any conflicts o something similar.
More attempts, more failures, always the same error! I'm deleting the optional stuff to study better the core of the xml, but still no success.. does microsoft have a package of sql server 2014 express?refer to this link
http://bootstrapper-manifest-generator-for-vs20.software.informer.com/2.0/

thanks! =)
SqlServer usually runs a file (SqlExpressChk.exe) to see if there is already an installation and a sql instance called sqlExpress (for the express installations). Do you know how can do this test with the bootstrapper manifest generator?
I am not able to test it currently, but I assume that will also check whether that has installed.
You have tested it, right?

MOF Syntax Error Installing SQL Server 2014 Express
I am trying to install SQL Server 2014 Express With Tools on a fully updated Win 8.1 system having already installed Visual Studio Community 2013 with Update 4. During the installation of SQL Server, I am getting a "MOF Syntax Error".
I found this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2387686 on the web but I can't see that that applies to me as I would have thought that any suggested fixes from this article would have been already installed
or corrected in Win 8.1 or SQL Server 2014. Neither do I know what fix I should install anyway.
An entry on this forum suggested that running Winmgmt /salvagerepository command fixed the problem. I ran the command in the Command Prompt and a /verifyrepository said it was consistent. However, the error still occurred when I installed SQL Server.
Can anyone help with this?Hi wagham,
From your description, you encounter the error when installing SQL Server 2014 Express on Windows 8.1. For further analysis, please help to post the summary and detail logs which locate under
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Log. For more details about viewing SQL Server setup log files, you can refer to this
article.
Additionally, based on my research, “MOF Syntax Error” could be caused by various reasons, such as insufficient account permissions, corrupted .NET Framework and so on. There are some proposals for you installing SQL Server 2014 Express as follows.
1. Make sure that the account you use to install SQL Server has admin rights. If you are using a domain administrator, please ensure that it is added to local administrator group.
2. Make sure that you right-click the SQL Server setup file (setup.exe) and choose “Run as administrator” to complete the installation.
3. Check that if the .NET Framework is corrupted on your system. You can verify the installation state of the .NET Framework via the
.NET Framework Setup Verification Tool. If the .NET Framework is corrupted, please
repair it using
.NET Framework Repair Tool, then reinstall SQL Server.
Here is a similar blog about “MOF Syntax Error” for your reference.

ThanksHello,
Applying Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2012 may solve this issue.
Hope this helps.
