Installing SSD in hard drive bay

I'm want to put an SSD in the hard drive bay of my W530 but am concerned about size and the rubber rails that came with the original hard drive. The hard drive thats in there now is a 7mm drive, and I think the SSD I'm looking at is about 9mm high. Is it possible to get different rubber rails to accomodate a taller drive (9mm vs 7mm)?
Also, second, the drive I'm looking at is the Samsung EVO 500 GB SSD, which it says it measures 2.75" wide. Will this fit or do I need to look for another drive? I thought laptop drives were only 2.5" wide, but Samsung claims it's for a laptop.

I swapped out the 512GB SATA spinner in my W530 for a 512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD. Fit perfectly using the existing rubber rails.
Just be careful about the orientation of the rubber rails as they attach to the SSD. I don't know if I consciously or unconsciously reversed them (from how they'd been placed on the original SATA spinner), but my initial install had them apparently backwards. I hadn't noticed the two different pictures in the Hardware Maintenance Manual, and this is my first laptop and thus my first hardware change in a laptop.
And even after I did see the two different drive pictures in the manual (which apparently were trying to convey a difference in positioning of the rubber rails) it really wasn't clear to me what they were trying to say.
Anyway, my first "install" had the rails either upside-down or inside-out or something, but the drive itself ended up being RAISED above the power/data connector inside the drive bay cavity. So although I though I had pushed the drive in firmly and could reattach the plastic bay cover holding the drive down, I had actually made ZERO electrical connection with the drive as it was a few millimeters raised from where it should have been and had obviously just slid right over the connector in the bay.
After booting failed to recognize the presence of any drive, I removed it entirely and re-visited the two pictures. I then realized that the rails had a proper "orientation", and maybe they were trying to show a DIFFERENCE in how you used the rails depending on whether you had a spinner hard drive or SSD.
So I just reversed the rails, suddenly realizing that it had just LOWERED the drive a bit when inserted into the bay. And NOW sure enough pushing the drive into the bay definitely felt like I was making contact with the power/data connector inside.
And now sure enough the next boot discovered the SSD present and I was finally off and running.
Don't forget to make use of Samsung Magician software, to optimize use of the SSD with Windows (Win7 Pro x64 in my W530).

Hi all,I have toshiba satellite P775 for couple of years and very happy with it. I am pleasantly surprise that it came with an open second drive bay drive. The SSD price has been coming down, so took this opportunity to install SSD as my primary drive and then move my old/existing drive to the second bay. Items needed.1. Installl software that can image disk or partition to my new SSD. I choose freeware, EaseUS Todo backup.2. Get 2.5" Sata SSD drive. My old/existing drive has 2 partitions: one 100GB for OS & apps and the rest is for my data. My SSD drive needs to be bigger than my OS & apps partition so that I don't have to reinstall my software.3. I bought part K000122700 (second hhd cable adapter) from partstore.com for $40 after tax & shipping. It took 2-3 weeks to arrive because it's special order.4. I also need a very very very sharp utility knife. The cable on part K000122700 is a bit short thus I have to cut off a bit of plastics that are in the way. WARNING: may void warranty, and risky...blah blah...5. Screwdriver.6. Window OS CD. Steps:1. Install freeware EaseUS Todo backup.2. Backup my existing/old drive3. Power down PC, remove power plug & remove battery. Open both bay (primary and secondary)4. Add the new hard disk adapter, K000122700. Try to maneuver it to fit into the secondary bay. Figure out what/which plastic are in the way. Protect the cables and board around that area with thick piece of cardboard before removing the bits of plastic casing. Keep the new adapter safe while plastic trimming with sharp utility knife.5. Install the new adapter along with new SSD drive in second bay.6. Close bays, add battery and restart machine.7. Using EaseUS Todo backup, copy the OS, software/apps & settings into new SSD. I kept my data in seperate partition in my old drive. Data stayed with the old drive. The tougest part for me was removing the bits of plastics (step 4) because I was afraid of cutting some other cables or board nearby. Step 14 was also scarry because it took some time for the OS disk to do the repair. I also need to unactivate software license (eg: malwarebytes, norton, ....) in my old drive and reactive them in my new SSD. Results:P775-S7100 - 17.3" - Core i5 2450M - Windows 8 Pro with Windows Media Center 64-bit - 6 GB RAM. (I have updated the OS two years ago).I bought PNY Optima SSD 240GB firmware n0530a, not the fastest disk, but it's on sale for $60. Total cost of upgrade is ~$100 (SSD+2nd HD ribbon/adapter). Decent price to pay for all the performance gain with lower run temperature too. Its like getting a brand new machine with lots of horsepower (though with same cpu). Very responsive, faster boot time, faster application launch & load. Disk performance is a bottleneck that can be easily solve with cheap SSD. The toshiba dual bay makes the expansion easy. I use freeware, CrystalDiskMark to test performance. BIG IMPROVEMENT........... Attached are my pictures.

Netlander, First off thank you for taking the time to pen this post about your intall, very imformative. Figured I add my two cents for what it's worth for anybody else thinking about attempting this. I have the P775-S7148. My computer is a couple years old and was overdue for a refresh, figured while I was at it I would do the swap to SSD hard drive. Stuff I ordered:Like you I ordered the little sata/Board/ribbon cable part: K000122700, I also order a second hard drive caddy that comes with 4 screws off of Ebay, and a screw pack for the computer, 500GB Crucial MX200(which comes with Acronis), and a Sata/usb cable. I chose to do the factory refresh, then clone method, easy business. 1. Make a list of all your programs, verication keys etc and gather up all the software you'll want to re-install.2. Back-up all your important files.3. On the P775 hold down 0 when you start the machine and follow the instructions. It'll boot into the Safe Mode screen, select start normally and it will take you to the screen you'll need. follow the instructions.4. Once windows is re-installed, I installed my anti virus, and downloaded Acronis.5. Next I plugged in my new external hard drive into the usb cable and cloned the drive. After that it's standard business of install your software updates etc. Computer Install:1. Unplug power, remove battery.2. Remove the L shaped center panel and the 2nd removalable panel next to it.(At this point I studied the computer case and the little sata board that was ordered and it was obvious this part was meant to be installed in this computer. So instead of cutting plastic I opted to open the case up and install the card properly with two screw from the screw pack I ordered.)3. Remove every screw you see on the bottom of the computer, there's a silver screw underneath the primary hard drive that needs to come out to remove the keyboard. 4. You'll need to remove the keyboard, start by using a thin knife and pri from the outside forward corners closest to the screen it will lift up and pop out.5. Disconnect the touch pad ribbon cable.6. The case just un-snaps from there, easy business. Be gentle though.7. Since you have case open might as well clean your fan and cooling fins, the fan is removed via one screw.8. Once you have the top case open you'll see a small space where this little card you purchased needs to be installed. Route the ribbon cable through the little slot it needs to live in and connect it to the motherboard.9. Ok put your computer back togethor, don't forget to lock the keyboard ribbon cable or all your key will decide not to work very well, yup I screw that up.10. Next install your new hard drive in the new caddy, take your old hard drive an install it into the secondary slot, it locks inplace just as Toshiba designed it, the screw on the hard drive caddy have slots they lock into. No need for spacers, both covers have built in spacers that also prevent the hard drives from moving away from the sata connectors. Your done! Install your software, do the million windows updates, and your golden. My computer runs better than it ever has, this SSD config is the way to go. Love it. Can I install a SECOND HARD DRIVE (ssd) on my x220i

For some reason I'm having problems finding the answer to this. I would like to install an ssd, but I would like to keep the existing hard drive for space. Is the a way to install a second hard drive (an ssd) into the x220i?

You can install an SSD drive in the mSATA card slot.

You haven't formatted the SSD, so you can't install Mac OS X.
First, close the OS X installer and open Disk Utility. Then, choose the SSD at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab, choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as "Format", and press Erase. Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html

Windows 8 will not activate with new SSD (second) hard drive

I added a new SSD drive in the second hard drive bay. I used the HP restoration media to install Windows 8 on the new SSD drive. Windows 8 will not activate. After spending 90 minutes on the phone with HP support (and paying $150), they told me to contact Microsoft. After spending some time with Microsoft, they told me that the Windows product key is being locked by HP, and there is nothing they can do.

Does the G71-340 US Notebook Have TWO Hard Drive Bays

My mother has the laptop mentioned in this subject line. She's got all kinds of issues going on with it. Runs slowly. Hangs. Shuts off randomly. I've run every virus scan and malware scan known to man and it's found nothing. It's either something that's on the hard drive that just isn't being detected and the only solution is to reformat the drive and reinstall everything from scratch or it's a hardware issue. I'm thinking of installing an SSD as the primary drive for speed improvement and reformatting the original drive that's in there right now and installing that as a secondary drive, *IF* this laptop has the ability to house 2 hard drives. Anyone know the answer to this 2nd hard drive bay question off the top of their head for this specific laptop? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately this is not one of the models with the extra hard disk bay. So the answer is no. Consider an external usb hard disk or a NAS.
Installing an SSD as a replacement for the original hard disk is the way to go. Use the largest that you can afford and run a factory image recovery from the recovery disk set.

I bought an HP Pavilion 500 - 319na desktop in summer and want to install a 2nd hard drive. There are spare connections on the board and the power cable to the internal hard drive has a spare connection. From what I read it needs to be SATA 3. I have read conflicting advice on this board. Some say yes, some say no.
OK, there seems to be only one bay (a poor oversight by HP) but provided I find a way of securing another drive is there any reason why it should not work.
From what I read it should be max 2Tb's.
I want a definitive answer please!
Win 8.1 64 bit.
This is the hard drive I plan to buy. The spec says XP, Vista, Win 7, but am I right in thinking it should work with win 8.1

As I said to you in the other cross posting (desktop hardware):
You can obtain 3.5" hard drive cage from here for $11 shipped. Granted it has a 120mm fan and space for 4 drives, but for the price, you can mod/cut all you want.
Now your other issue/question: You will want a SataIII 6GB/sec drive 2TB, 7200 RPM.

Cannot find a mounting to install a second hard drive in my Qosmio x70-A

I have looked all over the internet and have gotten no where in my search for a mounting for the secondary hard drive bay in my laptop. Anybody know where I can get one?
Also I've included pictures of the secondary drive bay and the primary bay. From the looks of it I can't use the same type of mounting in the secondary bay as in the primary.

I have the same issue, and have found Toshiba support to be completely unacceptable on this.
After getting bumped around from sales to tech to sales because "we don't answer that question, you have to talk to the other guy", I finally got a "straight" answer from sales:
"Sir, we DO NOT sell that part, and therefore I CANNOT tell you a part or model number for the part you may need to install that second hard drive. The only thing you can do is talk to our parts supplier over at National Parts (1 800 524 8338) and ask them to provide you with the model numer or sell you the part."
At this point, I was annoyed, but thought that at least with a straight answer I could proceed.
After a very short hold time with National Parts, a very kind associate answered the phone and listened to my tale of woe. Unfortunately, she was unable to help and said:
"Unfortunately, sir, I have listed that while there is no caddy for the second hard drive slot on you X70-A specific model, there is supposed to be a mounting bracket. Unfortunately, we have been trying for MONTHS to have Toshiba give us the part number, spec, or any other information other than 'mounting bracket', and therefore I'm afraid we have neither a part to sell you nor a part number for you to go looking for one".
At this point annoyance is full-blown anger. How is it possible for Toshiba to make something that should be SO SIMPLE so VERY VERY VERY complicated and impossible.
"Sorry, if you didn't want to spring for the dual drives when you bought it, you're hosed forever sucker." Does not seem like an excellent customer service strategy.
This was the FIRST Toshiba I'd ever decided to spend my hard-earned money on, and now it's a machine I can't upgrade because they can't get their act together with their parts supplier or in-house over a 3 dollar bracket?

Can I install an additional hard drive to my Macbook Pro? (2 Hard drives)

I was wondering whether I could install a second hard drive to my 2011 Macbook Pro (2.0 GHz, 500GB HD 4GB Ram) making a total 1TB hard drive space?

There are third party solutions out there, however be warned they will most likely void any current warranty - as it involves removing your optical drive. I don't have details on them myself, but when my apple care expires I might consider that on a Late 09 model and push it to dual SSD's

I had a 13" Non-retina MacBook Pro from mid-2012 and I bought it standard, but I upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 8GB, but also while on this website that I bought the RAM modules from, I noticed they sell Solid State Drives and I would have gotten one, but I wanted to upgrade it later on as I didn't have $500 for the 512GB flash drive for it. I need something with storage and 500GB is plenty, but I found a 960GB SSD for $500 on this website. Its a very good website for upgrades for all computers. So my question is, when I install this new hard drive, can I just hold Command+ R to install Mac OS X or do I need to go through a special process to get OS X on the new hard drive? I have an Apple Time Capsule so I have my data backed up and I'll just restore it from a backup. If I need a special cable to boot OS X to the new drive, then so be it.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

Installing a second hard drive in a G10-133

Couple of questions for you...
I'd like to install a second hard drive in my G10-133. Specifically I'm looking at a second 80gig drive (MK8026GAX). Does anyone have experience of installing a second drive like this?
Secondly, I know where to buy the drive from. But, does anyone have any advice about the drive carriage itself (ie. the bit of kit which holds the drive in place in the bay)? Specifically, where can I get one?

Hi Andrew,
Ignore Markus, you dont have to install the same size HDD in order for it to work. Your Qosmio shipped with an 80GB, you can put a 100GB if you like or a 20GB doesnt matter, aslong as you, as Markus correctly states you set the jumper correctly.
For the HDD to be fitted, you need the mounting brackets, try someone like Hugh Symons or CBC Computers, Google it for details.

Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter

I would like to install a second hard drive in my T61. I saw a thread that advised I can do this by purchasing a "Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter". The thread also had a link where one can be purchased. However, the page displayed by the link said that the product was unavailable. Do I have any other options for installing a second hard drive? Will this adapter become available for purchase in the future? I want to install solaris or Linux on the second drive and boot from it, I assume this is possible. Thanks.
