Installing SSD in spare bay on MacPro

Hi, Having a bit of a problem installing a Samsung 2.5 inch SSD into the second bay of my MacPro.
I bought the Icy Dock for converting the 2.5 to a 3.5 to fit the bay it is the tool-less model and requires that you slide the SSD forward using finger pressure.
I mounted it on the tray and slid it in and then plugged in my macpro but it isn't showing up on the desktop nor is it visible using Disk Utiility.
So I'm stumped, took the tray out and checked that the drive was pushed in all the way. It appears to be tight and I'm afraid to put to much pressure on it in case I break something.
Hoping someone has had experience with this installation and can offer a suggestion or two.

Which brand of SSD do you have ?
Are you using the icy dock ?
According th Icy Dock the samsung because it is thinner could cause a problem, this is the info I got from their where web site.
Note: This particular device is designed to fully support any standard 2.5" SATA 9.5mm height SSDs or HDDs. For 2.5" drives that are 7mm in height (e.g Samsung 830 SSD), the tool-less drive load may not work properly. Steps installing SSD as second drive or bay in P775

Hi all,I have toshiba satellite P775 for couple of years and very happy with it. I am pleasantly surprise that it came with an open second drive bay drive. The SSD price has been coming down, so took this opportunity to install SSD as my primary drive and then move my old/existing drive to the second bay. Items needed.1. Installl software that can image disk or partition to my new SSD. I choose freeware, EaseUS Todo backup.2. Get 2.5" Sata SSD drive. My old/existing drive has 2 partitions: one 100GB for OS & apps and the rest is for my data. My SSD drive needs to be bigger than my OS & apps partition so that I don't have to reinstall my software.3. I bought part K000122700 (second hhd cable adapter) from partstore.com for $40 after tax & shipping. It took 2-3 weeks to arrive because it's special order.4. I also need a very very very sharp utility knife. The cable on part K000122700 is a bit short thus I have to cut off a bit of plastics that are in the way. WARNING: may void warranty, and risky...blah blah...5. Screwdriver.6. Window OS CD. Steps:1. Install freeware EaseUS Todo backup.2. Backup my existing/old drive3. Power down PC, remove power plug & remove battery. Open both bay (primary and secondary)4. Add the new hard disk adapter, K000122700. Try to maneuver it to fit into the secondary bay. Figure out what/which plastic are in the way. Protect the cables and board around that area with thick piece of cardboard before removing the bits of plastic casing. Keep the new adapter safe while plastic trimming with sharp utility knife.5. Install the new adapter along with new SSD drive in second bay.6. Close bays, add battery and restart machine.7. Using EaseUS Todo backup, copy the OS, software/apps & settings into new SSD. I kept my data in seperate partition in my old drive. Data stayed with the old drive. I've also added a bit of filler made of rolled cardboard to secure my secondary drive better. Look at picture.13. Close all covers. Add battery & power.14. When first startup, it'll ask for boot from a windows CD. Then do a repair.15. Remove CD.16. Restart. Now the startup with new SSD. Everything was a fine for me. The tougest part for me was removing the bits of plastics (step 4) because I was afraid of cutting some other cables or board nearby. Step 14 was also scarry because it took some time for the OS disk to do the repair. I also need to unactivate software license (eg: malwarebytes, norton, ....) in my old drive and reactive them in my new SSD. Results:P775-S7100 - 17.3" - Core i5 2450M - Windows 8 Pro with Windows Media Center 64-bit - 6 GB RAM. (I have updated the OS two years ago).I bought PNY Optima SSD 240GB firmware n0530a, not the fastest disk, but it's on sale for $60. Total cost of upgrade is ~$100 (SSD+2nd HD ribbon/adapter). Decent price to pay for all the performance gain with lower run temperature too. Its like getting a brand new machine with lots of horsepower (though with same cpu). Very responsive, faster boot time, faster application launch & load. Disk performance is a bottleneck that can be easily solve with cheap SSD. The toshiba dual bay makes the expansion easy. I use freeware, CrystalDiskMark to test performance. BIG IMPROVEMENT........... Attached are my pictures.

Netlander, First off thank you for taking the time to pen this post about your intall, very imformative. Figured I add my two cents for what it's worth for anybody else thinking about attempting this. I have the P775-S7148. My computer is a couple years old and was overdue for a refresh, figured while I was at it I would do the swap to SSD hard drive. Stuff I ordered:Like you I ordered the little sata/Board/ribbon cable part: K000122700, I also order a second hard drive caddy that comes with 4 screws off of Ebay, and a screw pack for the computer, 500GB Crucial MX200(which comes with Acronis), and a Sata/usb cable. I chose to do the factory refresh, then clone method, easy business. 1. Make a list of all your programs, verication keys etc and gather up all the software you'll want to re-install.2. Back-up all your important files.3. On the P775 hold down 0 when you start the machine and follow the instructions. It'll boot into the Safe Mode screen, select start normally and it will take you to the screen you'll need. follow the instructions.4. Once windows is re-installed, I installed my anti virus, and downloaded Acronis.5. Next I plugged in my new external hard drive into the usb cable and cloned the drive. After that it's standard business of install your software updates etc. Computer Install:1. Unplug power, remove battery.2. Remove the L shaped center panel and the 2nd removalable panel next to it.(At this point I studied the computer case and the little sata board that was ordered and it was obvious this part was meant to be installed in this computer. So instead of cutting plastic I opted to open the case up and install the card properly with two screw from the screw pack I ordered.)3. Remove every screw you see on the bottom of the computer, there's a silver screw underneath the primary hard drive that needs to come out to remove the keyboard. 4. You'll need to remove the keyboard, start by using a thin knife and pri from the outside forward corners closest to the screen it will lift up and pop out.5. Disconnect the touch pad ribbon cable.6. The case just un-snaps from there, easy business. Be gentle though.7. Since you have case open might as well clean your fan and cooling fins, the fan is removed via one screw.8. Once you have the top case open you'll see a small space where this little card you purchased needs to be installed. Route the ribbon cable through the little slot it needs to live in and connect it to the motherboard.9. Ok put your computer back togethor, don't forget to lock the keyboard ribbon cable or all your key will decide not to work very well, yup I screw that up.10. Next install your new hard drive in the new caddy, take your old hard drive an install it into the secondary slot, it locks inplace just as Toshiba designed it, the screw on the hard drive caddy have slots they lock into. No need for spacers, both covers have built in spacers that also prevent the hard drives from moving away from the sata connectors. Your done! Install your software, do the million windows updates, and your golden. My computer runs better than it ever has, this SSD config is the way to go. Love it. Installing SSD increased boot up time of my Macbook Pro

Hi all.
I just installed a Crucial M4 256GB SSD into the Superdrive slot of my 17in MBP with a caddy. I have formatted drive and copy all files from the HDD over to the SSD but the performance is so slow on boot. Before i installed it into notebook, I had the SSD connected via a USB dock and was able to boot from it fine. However after i installed SSD into my MBP, it takes quite a while to boot up off the HDD (3-5mins). After it boots, the SSD drive would not appear on desktop for another minute or so. When accessing the SSD, i would get the colored spinning wheel and it waits before i am able to browse SSD files.
After installation, I then tried to set SSD as boot drive and restarted it. The MBP would not boot from SSD and then reverts to boot from HDD.
What is causing this? It is as if it has trouble initiating SSD, however SSD seems to work off cradle and USB just fine.
Does it matter whether I had SSD in main HDD bay or superdrive bay?
I used SuperDuper to copy files over.
The get info shows that the SSD is bootable.

A SSD may not even work in the Optical bay. Some do and sopme don't. IMHO it is not the SSD used but the Optical drive and more specifically the cable and restrictions Apple places on that bay. Apple only want you to use a Slow CD/DVD drive in that bay so they use a very limited cable system and may restrict the speed of that bay in the firmware to only work with slower type disks/disc (slower HDD and or CD/DVD drives).

After clean install/SSD upgrade, how to keep prefs and wipe OS from HDD?

I'm about to install an SSD in the boot bay and move my HDD to the optical bay. I'm awaiting the arrival of the disk doubler before I get on with it. In the meantime have a couple questions:
Firstly, after I've done a clean install of Mountain Lion and loaded up all my apps onto the SSD, I'd like to free up memory and remove the OS and apps from the HDD. After googling, I've found lots on installing SSDs and creating a USB boot drive with ML, but can't find anything that addresses potential issues of simply deleting the OS from the old (HDD) drive. I'd appreciate any advice on dos and don'ts!
Secondly, is there any way that before I delete these, I can import all my existing prefs/settings for the OS and existing apps, so I don't have to reset all of this? Again, despite looking around for tips, I've come up empty.

Ideally, you should clone your HD as Bimmer 7 Series explains.
However, if your computer originally shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, a clone is not necessary to merely reinstall OS X. OS X Internet Recovery will create a recovery partition, download the installer package, and install it on a completely empty SSD or HD.
Even if your computer shipped with Snow Leopard, it may be eligible to download a firmware update that creates the same ability: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904

Installing SSD in GT60 Dominator

I just picked up a new GT60 Dominator 3K Edition. The laptop did not come with an SSD installed, though I had a 240GB SSD from my old laptop, and I would love to be able to shift the OS over to the SSD and use the 1TB drive just for data and a few rarely used programs.
Anybody have any answers as to how to do this?
F3 system Reset/Refresh doesn't give me the option to install on a different drive, Creating a recovery disc using BurnRecovery software doesn't seem to work? Any solutions? What if i Swap the 2 drives over physcially inside the laptop, and use the different SATA ports, would that get me anywhere?

There's a number of different ways to do it, but here's my preference....
1. Make the MSI Burn Recovery (backup) disks/DVD's.
2. Before installing the SSD, ensure that there are NO partitions on the SSD. It needs to be unpartitioned so the Burn Recovery disks can set it up properly.
3. Remove HDD, Install SSD (into SATA3 location).
4. Install the OS and such using MSI Burn Recovery.
5. After setting up the OS and getting everything running properly, shutdown.
6. Install HDD into secondary/SATA2 slot.
7. Ensure that the BIOS recognizes both drives and that the SSD is set as the boot drive.
This is much longer than just attempting to clone, but I don't trust cloning from a HDD to an SSD. In the end, if/when it doesn't work, you'll end up doing this anyway. Personally, again, I know this works and it's how I would do it. Save yourself the headache.
IF MSI Burn Recovery isn't working, I'd contact MSI. Something might be wrong with your installation.

I'm installing SSD in MacBookPro 5,1 (late 2008). It is suggested that a clean install be done, then use migrate to move applications and files. I am upgrading from OX 10.6.8 which came with my machine and I do not have a disc for a fresh install. How do I get a Mountain Lion OS as a upgrade to do an install on the new hd? I have a back up boot and system hard drive and it could be migrated to the new disk then upgraded, but I would like to start fresh. Any suggestions either way?

I have a S20 4157-CTO with a Marvel 64xx/63xx SAS controller running a single 15000 rpm segate sas drive. I want to upgrade that drive to a single segate ST400FM0073 which is a ssd sas. My plan will be to use acronis to do full image to my external backup drive, remove original drive, install ssd and use acronis to recover image from backup to ssd. Can I expect my install to go as easily as I think. Any information or comments on installing this ssd would be very appreciated. Thanks

Thank you, my noise issue will cost about $1500.00 for an equivalent drive. Would you comment on another solution using perhaps 180 mb SSD SATA drives hooked to my marvell controller or to the motherboard. I was thinking raid 5 with 3 drives. 3 180 or so SSD SATA may save me some money. I would use the same plan, remove existing SAS 15000 rpm install raid setup and then use acronis to recover my backup to the raid array. Comments please.

HGST does make a 1.5 terabyte drive that would work quite well in your machine - the Travelstar 5K1500.

Thanks for all the advice. It looks like I have finally got my MBP working again (after two weeks of pain).
The WD HD works fine internally, but restoring from TM introduced a whole load more of issues/incompatabilities (see above). Eventually the only thing left was to re-build rather than restore:
i) mount the WD disk internally and install Snow Lepoard from the orginial installation disks
ii) get online, and after much trying download Lion (previously purchased). Perfrom all update.
iii) Connect my Time Capsule, identify my data, photo and music files and then copy them accross by hand
iv) install all the other applications (e.g. MS Office:mac, etc) from scratch.
This exercise has shown me that even though tools and procedures exist to address separate issues, when the complexity of inter-dependence is introduced there are a raft of problems that crop up.
Now I am back in business I will be using TM and CCC to take full and regular copies. I did this previously, which has saved me from losing my data and cherished pictures, but hopefully next time (and I'm sure there will be a next time) the recovery will be less infuriating.
BTW I got a refund on the Seagate Momentus XT. They guy in the shop said it wasn't the first time he'd heard of this issue with MBPs. Great.

Yes, if you've a DVD of mountain lion you can install it else download it and you can make a DVD...
If you want to downgrade or Install Mountain Lion, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your computer is starting up
Then open Disk Utility
choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar
go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
Done

P67A-GD65 : Boot sequence keeps changing after installing SSD

Hi,
Before I had the SSD, all was fine and running on IDE. After installing SSD and changing mode to AHCI, the boot sequence keeps changing after reboot. I did not reset the CMOS after installing the SSD. I had disabled all boot except for the SSD (which is connected to SATA Port 1). And I did save by pressing F10 after changing the sequence in BIOS.

I have the same problem. The board decides to try and boot from some other device, even though the SSD is detected. Very annoying.
I'm using the sata cable that came with the board; e.g. brand new.
