Installing the northbrigde fan

Heyo!  I'm finally installed (or tried to) my northbridge fan, but it's not working.  It does work, as I attached to my other computer.  However, on my board (KT6 Delta LSR) do I have to set it up in the bios?  However, I haven't found anywhere to do so.  This is the first computer I've built myself, so it could be a simple issue.
Also, I've had compatibilty issues with some hardware, as I have mentioned elsewhere (keyboard and ram).  Thanks for any help!
My specs:
KT6 Delta LSR
Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton?)
Geforce FX 5600
512 MB Ram of unknown quality...
Western Digital 80 Gb

Hi,
My KT6 Delta LSR does not have a fan. However the 3 pin connector is there near the Northbridge heatsink and if you connect a 3 wire fan to it it works. The speed is shown in both the Corecell and bios. If you connect the fan after loading your OS you may have to reboot to see the speed. I have noticed that although the corecell sees the fan as "Northbridge" in my case the active speed control only works for the CPU, it does not change the "Northbridge" fan speed which always runs at maximum. I don't get a temperature reading for the Northbridge either.
Hope this helps explain.

  • How do I install a Northbridge fan on K7N2G?

Long story short. I ordered a K7N2G-ILSR from a vendor.
The ILSR comes with the optional Northbridge Mobo fan.
The L does not, but is basically the same board, and supports the optional fan.
MSI is being kind enough to ship me a fan for free, despite the fact that it was not their fault for the mix-up.
(The original vendor is of no help. Possibly brain-dead.)
    I just have one question:
How do you remove the little heatsink on the K7N2G-L and install the Optional fan? I noticed a couple of pins/screws
holding the heatsink on. Do I have to remove the board from my case and tap these pins out, or do they just unscrew, or..?
    Detailed info/instructions needed and appreciated.
    Thanks. 8)

    Thanks for the replies.
I'll try just mounting the fan first, then if
I don't see what I think is a good temp.
drop, I'll take the old heat-sink off, apply
some Artic Silver, and mount the entire HS/F.
Thanks again to MSI for sending me the fan.
Even though is was not MSI's fault that one of
my vendors sent me the wrong board, they went out
of their way and sent me a fan,
    at no cost to me.
You don't often see companies these days that
actually give a rat's ***, about things like this.
Recieved the fan yesterday right to my front door.
By this small gesture, MSI made me a surprised and
happy camper, and for them an assured repeat customer.

  • Big fan noise problem: the rear fan won't shut off, the BIOS won't update, systemupdate locks up

I received new ThinkStaion (oh boy, lots of memory and CPU speed, yay!)
I unfortunately left the originally installed Vista OS on there.  Very much regretting that as I believe it contributes to the following problems (BIOS).
So the original problem was that after just a month of using my new ThinkStation, the System Board died, and it had to be replaced. Honestly, all I did was choose the sleep or hibernate option in Vista to shut down.  Afterwards, poof! didn't even get the proper Power lights on the system.  I diagnosed this with the online docs and then sat for a few hours on our tech support line doing all the same things to re-diagnose it.
So after the replacement, the rear fan will not shut off. Jet engine noise all day. I went into the system settings and selected "Quiet" for the Fan settings but that did not help.
Research on this forum resulted in the possibility of a BIOS update fixing the problem.  Comparison to my co-workers systems which arrived at the same time shows this BIOS is woefully out of date, so even if it does not fix the fan issue I want to update it.  However, everything I've tried to do is failing for one reason or another.
(The fan issue does need resolution since in one week I will end up sharing an office (first time in many years, thanks IBM for nothing!) so since I don't want us both to have to wear noise cancelling headsets, I'd like to fix this without having to just pull the @#$@ power to the fan. Grrrr. )
I downloaded what I felt were the appropriate Lenovo apps to update both the BIOS and the serial number but none seem to work properly from the command line in Vista.  One of the two (can't recall which) asks me to reboot and it never actually shuts down. Eternal "Shutting Down" message. Ga!  The other throws some gosh awful

Then I decided Vista might be the problem and found sites recommending flashing the BIOS from a bootable USB.  So I started down that path and after burning the wrong version, finally geting the AIK Vista tools installed and to the point of trying to make the USB bootable, it won't allow me to put the OS boot on it.  Ah, for the days when a simple "sys a:" took care of that.
So, after reformatting the USB and pounding my head in the wall, keyboard, etc. I am at my wit's end.  What to do.  I just want the fan noise to go away.
This does seem to duplicate other forum messages but I can't get anywhere on this.  Help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

FYI to all the helpful folks here (and any looking to shut their jet engine off as well): Flashing the BIOS did the trick.
First I had to find a website with DOS OS files and put those on the USB instead of Vista.  Oldie but a goodie, but at least it booted! No other versions would.
I had been intending to use the WinPhlash utility that Lenovo supplied with the BIOS update but since I was booting from DOS that was useless. However, I found a DOS version of it and used that instead. Boom baby!  Flashed and rebooted.
It did take two boots to get it back to normal (first one gave very alarming messages about no operating system being found but I think it was just a remnant of the reboot that was triggered from the DOS session).  A second boot returned life to normal and blissful silence from the server.  And I was finally able to get the model and serial number back in there to get rid of the bootup message it throws for that too.
    Ahhhhhhh.
Thanks to all for the hints - I believe I had gotten the idea of flashing the BIOS to solve this from some other thread I found here.  This is a very nice forum to have bookmarked.

  • Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922

    Hi folks,
I have a HP Elitebook Folio 9470p.  It came with Windows 8, and I installed it on my corporate domain.  I was trying to do some Windows updates so  I could upgrade it to Windows 8.1, but it fails installing the updates, whether or not I try
to install them one at a time or all of them.  It has about 18 updates it needs from security updates to a .net framework update.  I run Symantec EP, and disabled it, checked for driver updates for things like display and networking and they are
    all up to date.
I'm at a loss as to what to do.  It gives this error in the event log for each file, Event ID 20.
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922: Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2862152).
This is the example for KB2862152, but it gives the same error for every one.  I've tried to auto fix for Windows update issues and it fixed a couple of the issues, but not all of them, and provides no other help.
I also deleted folders and files from the SoftwareDistribution folder as well, to no avail.  Any ideas what I can do to get whatever updates it needs, so I can fully patch it, and upgrade it to Win 8.1?
    Thanks for any help!

Hi MM. Mr Kywildcat and Vegan Fan,
GOOD NEW ! At this time, my issue is solved. The only black side is "how ?" : I hope that we will get a response some day ; however, and for in information  pnly - hoping this could help someone - I resume some actions which allowed this the happy end
    1) about installing 8.1 : I wanted to be sure that gain/pain ratio was positive, and that upgrading from a (potentially) damaged system would'nt produce something looking like a new Win 8.1, but difficult to maintain and keeping some negative potentialities.
    2) I was influenced by the fact that this
0x800F0922  error acted as "a serial killerror", whose root cause could be a unique update error at reboot time concerning several (>20) packages, so I decided to test some manual upgrades.
    3)   Manual update (i.e. manual download and maunching of .msu packages) of the 2 following packages
(whose update previously failed on a Windows Update) was successful : .NET Framework version 3.5 for  x64 (KB2898866) and Camera Codec Pack Windows 8 for x64 (KB2899190)
    4) So I decided to try Windows Update on a selection of packages, first : those concerning .Net Framework 3.5 and 4.5 (that is: KB2898866, 2901120, 2898865) --> Successful !
    5) finally, I selected almost all other packages, with some exceptions wich I (think to) have no need for : KB2871690, 2904659, 2843630. To be complete, here is the list of pakages updated one time at all :
    KB 2892074, 2893294, 2893984, 2909210, 2912390, 2916036, 2889784,2903938, 2911101, 2913152, 2917499
    --> always succesful.
I am not a specialist, but I uess that this 0x800F0922 error hides another problem which is globally "H-RESULTED"
to all updates pending in one update operation with reboot. This could be assumed from this CBS.log exterped from my last wrong attempts, where root cause seems not to be
    0x800f0922, but 0x80004003 :
2014-02-15 21:29:13, Info                  CBS    Could not get active session for current session file logging [HRESULT = 0x80004003 - E_POINTER]

Anyway, thanks to you who spent some of your time to describe issues and search/ suggest solutions ; I will upgrade my system to 8.1 anyway, some of this day, when I am sure that my configuration does not hides some other problem. I thing that potential
issue remains until maybe a new KB corrects it, wrong :-) ?
And I hope that you - Mr Kywildcat - can upgrade your system on "current levels" trying similar attempts.

  • How can I install the proper App Store app to complete my upgrade?

I have Snow Leopard (10.6.8) installed on my iMac 27 (late 2010) but the app store app is not supported on this version. How can I get the proper app store app for SLP? My goal is to get back to Maverick.
I was running Maverick just fine but ran out of disk space. I had Best Buy install a Seagate 3TB drive. I reinstalled OS X 10.6.4 from my Install Disk. Then I upgraded the "software upgrades" to get 10.6.8.  Somehow I upgraded the App Store app to a version that is not supported on my current version of 10.6.8.
I appear to be stuck. Unable to go to App Store to down load Maverick.
Also, with the new Seagate 3TB drive, the fan runs continuously. Any ideas how I can move forward?

Regarding your fan issue I believe I am correct in assuming BBY did not install the correct HD. My suggestion is to first do several SMC resets which are designed to help with running fans, carefully read http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964. for information on what a SMC reset addresses. You can find instructions for doing the SMC resets in https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603. A SMC reset will ONLY help if the correct HD was installed though.
If the reset does not fix the issue then return the machine to BBY, inquire if the drive they use has heat sensors integrated into the HD they installed and if not then get them to install the correct HD to address the issue.

  • I installed a cooling fan in my G3

My hard drive died so I put a new one in (80gb, 7200 rpm) and I thought it would be a good time to install a cooling fan. I put an 80mm, 30cfm fan just under the exhaust vent on top of the iMac, and powered it w/ the hard drive power cable (the fan has a male and female plug so you can wire it in series w/ the hard drive).
The fan works great however I notice it doesn't shut off when the iMac goes to sleep. My question is has anybody here installed a fan in their iMac and how did you wire it?
Not a big deal as the fan only cost $7, but it won't last as long when it runs 24/7. I don't usually shut down the iMac, just let it go to sleep.
    Thanks

    Hello,
The only option I could think to propose, would be to put it on a thermal sensor. There are sensors that are designed for PC builders. Those sensors draw power from the hard drive connector (like you powered the fan), and then can control whether or not the fan is powered or not based on temperature (you would plug the fan into the sensor for power).
You would attach the heat probes / sensors to whatever you wanted to base the activation temperature on (CPU, hard drive, ambient temperature, etc.).
That would be about the only option I would see since the iMac does not have a control mechanism for the fan.
Now, if you were up to designing your own electronics, you could devise a sensor / controller mechanism that would activate or shut-down based on the state of a component (such as the hard drive). But, that is not something you'll find pre-built. I used to get into things like that, but it would take a lot of money to motivate me to produce something like that now (just don't have the time or interest anymore).
Otherwise, just let the fan spin.
I have an iMac G3 Lime 333 MHz that came with a factory fan installed. It's fan spins all the time and only turns-off if the computer is completely off. Even when it's asleep, the monitor is off, the hard drive is off, and so on, the fan runs at full speed. I just haven't cared enough to alter it.
    I hope this helps.

  • What is the correct way of quieting down the CPU fan?

    Hello,
Let me first ask for recomendations on an aftermarket CPU Heatsink and Fan to replace the stock one on my AMD x4 965 Black edition CPU please, My profile on this forum has my computers equipment and case etc.  But if you need more info please just ask..
Would somebody please give me instructions on how to make the stock CPU cooling fan run at a more appropriate RPM when at idle and or when running with a load on it please.
The stock CPU cooling fan usually runs up there at about 5,000 to 5,500 CPM even when at idle and it's seriously insanely loud, too loud to be sitting next to it and trying to concentrate on work or even playing a game.
I've been loading up the Overclockers Center program and choosing the default profile since that seems to have the CPU fan set to around 3500 RPM which produces an acceptable noise level for the fan.  But I figure that having to load up Overclockers Center program and choosing a profile each time I load my computer is probably not the way I should be doing it, so if somebody wouldn't mind, please explain what I need to set in the Bios or elsewhere so that the CPU cooling fan is not blowing my head off with noise all the time.
    Thanks

    Hello
1-This mobo is strong enough to support such a heavy coolers. Now i have i installed TUNIQ TOWER EXTREM( because of porformance/price here) that is as heavy as v8. although the company dosnt gauranty the failure but it works very well on my case and i rotate and opening the case  many times for some experiments!!
2- ZALMAN is a famous cooler producer.I said the rules for choosing a cooler . You can buy one of them .The reviews on net can help you for best choise.BUt v8 is a good proven cooler because the more surface that has and material and big fan.although i didnt have another choice in IRAN.You may find so better coolers.
the fluid mechanic rules say that the surface-material-shape of heat sinks and temperature-velocity-amount of air that moves on the heat sinks are the parameters of a heat sink.
i have a bad experience. In my old case with P4 3 GHZ i bought a good cooler from THERMALTAKE .But the fans is rotating very much and made noise. There was some truth that i didnt mentioned.
The cpu is produce a lot of heat ( more than phenom) and  the fan is 10 cmm i think . I replaced the fan with a 12 cmm fan but the system in loads crashed. The heat sink designed for such a fan and it must rotate very much to cool cpu .12 cm fans cant go beyond 2000 rpm i think and this amount of air wasnt enough for cooling.
3- you have a lot of wind in your case!!. I dont know that greater fan than 12 cm is safe because they use more current .But 8 and 12 cm fans works very well with onboard ports and SPEEDFAN program.
After all cooling and making the pc make less noise is a long story .You must have a target . There is a limit that you cant go beyond that so i think you must have a plan and use your money and time on it.
For my new system i had a dream: most powerful-silent-upgradable system so i choosed these parts:
POWER=CM SILENT PRO- for the design and big fan that they have.
CPU=ATHLON II 635 -I knew that phenom is very powerful but make more heat so i used this cpu and have plan for upgrading with a 6 core cpu.
    VGA= 1-GIGABYTE 9800GT SILENT
             2-ZOTAC 9800GT SYNERGY
choosing a gpu was very hard. 9800gt silent was the most powerful silent cpu that i could buy. but for future i bought a zotac. because it has a single cooler and dosnt occupy a PCI slot that i need.
you may say why you dont buy another 9800 silent? because this card is warm in loads and i had a fear two of them in a case may harm them. I count on HYBRID SLI technology that could shut down the second card but it is not working and i am a little disappoint .
two 9800gt in sli have as power as a GTS 270 in reviews.
CPU COOLER=TUNIQ TOWER EXTREM- According to my counts cooler was silent in ideal but in loads it was noisy so i replaced that
MOBO=NF980-G65-It uses the last chipset from nvidia with sli enabled and ddr3 and phenomii x6 support. (The mobo is hot. According to some reviews it is cooler than AMD chipset motherboards and faster but i hope it was cooler)
    Good luck

  • Satellite A30-514 is very slow, and how to service the cooling fan

My notebook has become very slow now. Power on need to use F1 to boot and this too is absolutely slow process. My machine has 512 MB RAM but shows only 480 MB on control panel. Does anyone think it is a RAM failure that has made the machine slow or something else. I have tried maintenance but did not help.
Also has any one got the details how you could open the unit up to service the cooling fan since the machine heats up a lot and need to service it.
    thanks
    Janak

    Hi Janak,
Ok, lets break this answer down to two parts which hopefully will help:
    1. The reason that Control Panel shows only 480MB when you have 512MB installed is because your laptop uses what is called "shared graphics", which means that the RAM used for the graphics card (which is actually built into the mainboard) is taken from the overall RAM. A quick calculation shows that you have a 32MB grpahics card: 480MB + 32MB = 512MB, so I wouldn't go out and replace the memory just yet!
2.There are several tools which can be found under Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools. These include Defrag and Disk Cleanup. Running through these (I would recommend Disk Cleanup before Defrag) may help clear some clutter from your hard drive and tidy things up a little. This is turn may give you back a little performance.
If none of this seems to make any difference, it may be that your hard drive is nearng the end of its life, or it may be that there is not much free space on it, both of which can cause a system to run slower than normal.
I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

  • Permissable to install PCI slot fan + another fan?

    Hello,
I decided to do something to help get some of the heat out of my G5 Quad. I took from my G4 MDD the PCI slot fan which fits perfectly in the groove next to the PCIe slot. Also, decided to install a smaller fan in the middle of the computer chassis, next to the GPU. Is it normal for the G5 Quad's GPU card to get hot or warm? I felt the heatsink and it was kind of hot. I have no problems with my computer, just wanted to know if its permissable to put some fans inside the G5 to help get hot air out of the system. I know there is an air deflector shield, but is it any harm to put a small fan sitting upright facing towards the back to get hot air out of the machine, and a PCI fan card as well?
    Awaiting responses.

    Japamac,
For someone who doesn't own a G5, you sure do know a lot about them So, you are advising me NOT to put in a PCI Slot fan and or take the smaller fan from my MDD and put it in the middle of the case for it to cool the video card? I was just concerned because I saw the GPU temp was over 160 degrees and the heatsink, though massive on the 6600 nvidia was kind of hot to touch. I would have thought by putting in a PCI Slot fan it would help to cool the GPU down. It does in fact cool it down tremendously.
Perhaps, I will remove the other smaller fan. What is the purpose of the air deflector shield? I never had one of those in my MDD before and its a first on the G5. I am aware that PCI isn't compatible with PCIe. The PCI Slot fan doesn't fit INTO the slot, but rather just connects to the bottom of the slot. I know. G5's are not forgiving. Just the slightest miscalculation and problems can occur.
Is 160 degrees F exceeding the GPU temperature? Bear in mind, its the heatsink that got hot, not the outer perimeter of the card. Right now, my temps are as follows, even with the fans I have in place:
    Hard drive: 115F
    CPU A core 1: 122F
    CPU A core 2: 124F
    CPU B core 1: 124F
    CPU B core 2: 126F
    Backside: 117F
    Drive bay(empty one?): 92F
    GPU(video card): 128F
Also, I asked you another question in another thread. What internal SATA card can you recommend for me which supports booting to the OS? I just ordered a 500GB SATA-II drive and would like to access the 3.0GB/SEC speed with a nice SATA-II card that supports booting. I have yet to find one in PCIe. I take it there probably doesn't exist one.

  • How to attach the chipset fan

I have the K8N Neo Plat.  Ok, I picked up one of these chipset cooler fans from compusa:
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=291975&pfp=SEARCH
**I'm not going to remove the stock chipset heatsink.  I just want to install the fan on top of it**
The fan is already screwed onto a metal plate that seems like it could be easily glued to the existing nvidia heatsink.  So, can I just use the thermal paste that comes with this thing to attach it to the chipset heatsink?  Or do I have to try and get those two white headed screws out and use them to hold the fan on?  Should I try and remove the Nvidia logo plate from the top of the heatsink first?
    Thanks for any help

Fortunately, I have a very simple question:
I have a fan already.  I have the stock heatsink in the mobo.  I just want to know the best way to attach the fan that I have to the stock heatsink.  Can I just glue it on with the thermal paste that came with it, or do I also need to screw it down?
Anyone have any experience with this fan know what I'm talking about?

  • Satellite M30x: Cannot install the VAP - ID-ERR-NOTINSTALLTVALTZ

    Hi,
I have got a little problem with my Sat M30x and Vista system. I need to change the cooling method to slow down the CPU fan as I did in WinXP using Toshiba Power Saver.
Unfortunately, the utility does not seems to be available for Vista.
I have tried to search for some solution which might be Toshiba Valued Added Package. It is supposed to add the method change option into Vista power settings, but I am unable to install the program - ends with an "ID-ERR-NOTINSTALLTVALTZ-MESSAGE" error.
General advice is a bios update, but the latest version I have found - 1.90, ATI video - is already installed.
Please, is there any way to get rid of the noisy fan without downgrading the OS?
    Thanks a lot.

I wonder where you have found the VAP (Value Added Package) for this notebook model.
I checked the Toshiba European driver page and found some drivers for Visa 32bit in Archive area
    But there is NO VAP!!!!
Therefore Ive got only one explanation why this error occurs; you have tried to install this software which is NOT compatible with Sat M30X!!!

  • If I install a leak. Will I get a notification to install the official 10.3.1??

I am not a big fan of leaks as I had a bad exprecience with them.  I usually refer to them as crappy old, Non-optimized leaks. So my question is for eg I am running 10.3.1.2072 or anyother... Will I get a notification in the settings to install the official 10.3??
