Installing Tiger and classic on an external drive

I'm trying to install Tiger so I can run classic on an external drive to play the one or two games that are still not compatible with X. When I boot my Tiger install DVD on my Powerbook G4, it goes in to Open Firmware.
Any suggestions??

Well...I posted here cause I have leopard on the machine, and thought it was related.
anyhow..I have a Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz.
I thought for sure I had booted from the Tiger retail DVD before. I guess i'll need to look for my Powerbook discs (wish me luck).

  • Can I have Tiger enclosing classic on an external drive

I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on a late 2009 Mac Mini with an external LaCie drive to which I back up my home folder each night (don't use time machine). I moved up from a G4 mac mini which had Classic as well as Tiger on it.
Would it be possible if I cloned my Tiger including Classic system from my old G4 mini to a separate partition on this current LaCie disk, for this partition to show up as a possible alternate startup disk in my System Preferences> Startup Disk when using my present Intel machine? I know Classic can't work under Intel, but wonder if the System Preferences here would allow me to boot into my external disk partition on Tiger/ Classic restarting.
Why I would like to try this is simply that although I bought a new scanner and photoshop elements 8 to work with Snow Leopard, and it does, I had an old scanner and Photoshop 6 working out of Classic on my previous mini and it just worked better, gave me more options, than the new setup. So I miss using it on my monitor, though I can still do so on my G4 laptop.

You can however use SheepShaver (http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/) to run MacOS 7.5.2 thru 9.0.4 in emulation on an Intel Mac... Its not a perfect solution but it does work for many apps (I've got Sheepshaver with OS8.6 and Photoshop 6 working on my Intel iMac)...

  • Has Anyone Installed Bootcamp (and XP) on an External Drive?

I'm thinking of installing Bootcamp and XP on a Maxtor external hard drive to play games because I don't want to take up valuable internal drive space. I have a 120 gig hard drive on my MBP and I need as much space as I can get.
How would this work for games? My internal drive is 5400 rpm and the Maxtor external is 7200 rpm (Firewire 800).
    Thanks!

It looks like people have gotten XP on an external USB drive to boot:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=191777
    Summary:
o Hack the Windows install CD. The problem is that the USB drivers are loaded / unloaded during bootup, so that messes the bootup itself. The hack gets rid of this.
o Same hack cannot as yet be transplanted onto firewall, because somehow that's different.
I think it's not a clean solution because it looks like the process involves removing the internal drive, and also there's no pagefile (i.e. virtual memory) since WinXP doesn't allow that on external drives.

  • Installing Fusion3 and Windows 7 on external drive

    Hello and Help!
I'm taking delivery on an iMac 27", 2.8 quad core, 8GB RAM and with 1TB HDD. I currently have Boot Camp on my MBP running Windows XPP. I invested in VMware Fusion3 and now run Boot Camp within OSX and really like it.
With the new iMac coming, someone suggested that I install Fusion3 and Windows, (which will be Windows 7) on a separate external HDD. First, I assume it's possible, but I have no clue as to how. Do I run Boot Camp with the external HDD mounted and path Windows 7 to it? And then do I install Fusion 3 in OSX or the external drive. Installing in OSX is easy since I've already done it, but I don't know about installing it on an external drive.
Any help would be most appreciated.

  • Running 10.4 and Classic from an external drive

I just installed 10.5 on my work machine (PPC G5) and to my dismay found out I cannot run classic applications.I have one application (never updated to 10.0 or above) that accesses some archived files. I don't need it very often but the files are critical when needed.
Since I don't need to do this often I'd like to install 10.4 on my external Firewire drive (Apple Partition Map) and reboot whenever I need the archived material.
Can this be done? Is there a recommended procedure for doing it? Does anyone know of any problems doing this?
Thanks in advance for any help provided.

  • I installed Tiger and now my printer/scanner won't work

Hi. I installed Tiger and now my multi function printer/scanner/fax is not recognized by my computer. I have the Brother MFC 420 CN. I downloaded some drivers and such which I thought would resolve the issue, but still it does not work. What can I do? Thank you.

    According to this page:
    http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/macosxstate.htm
The MFC-420 CN is not listed. Sounds like you have a printer whose driver never was updated. Contact Brother technical support and ask them to fix that issue.

  • How do I install windows xp on a 2TB external drive osx 10.6.8?

How do I -OR- CAN I
Install Windows XP on a 2TB external drive OSX 10.6.8?
I WILL get another 2TB to back up to 1st!
Should I start over with the New 2TB Drive and put the XP & OSX partitions on it 1st?
BTW... Anyone have an idea where I should send a WindowsXP drive that has the click of death syndrome to get the data off it?
    Thanx Y'All
    OKMatthew

Microsoft doesn't allow users to install Windows on an external drive, so you can't do it. Instead, install Windows in the internal hard drive through Boot Camp.
Respecting to your second problem, there are companies that recovers data from your hard drive, so you may want to contact with them

  • Is it possible to install my home folder on an external drive?

I need to hand my MacBook in for repair, but I don't want any of my documents on it when it goes in to the repair shop. I have full Time Machine back-ups of the entire laptop, but is there any way I can install my home folder on an external drive so that while my laptop is being repaired I can continue working as usual with my external hard drive plugged in to another (older, smaller hard drive) laptop?

Get an empty external drive properly formatted. Get Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0 and use it to backup your Home folder to this external drive. Create a new admin user account and turn off auto login if it is enabled. Reboot the computer and sign into the new user account. Delete your user account.

  • The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?

I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
    This is the problem:
The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?
Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?
    Thanks!

No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
(In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.

  • To save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

to save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

    Yes.
To preserve your projects, all moves should be done from within iMovie, (not the Finder).
First, the external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 will not work. You can reformat using Disk Utility if you need to.
When importing video from your camera, you can specify your external drive as the target on the import screen.
For existing projects, you should move using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
There is an error in the instructions where it says to drag the project icon to the icon in the Event Library. You should instead look for your hard drive icon in the Project Library.
You can move events using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6d42c
If you want to move Events, and copy photos, copy music, etc for editing on another Mac, you should use the FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA feature after moving the Project as above.

  • I really need to speed up my IMAC.  I purchased a new external drive specifically formatted for apple.  I also would like to move some other media (movies and music) to this external drive.  What is the best method for this?

Please help...I need to delete iphoto pictures and back up to external drive without losing pictures. I have the external drive and would like to start this process.  Can you help?

Formatted for Mac is not a format - for iPhoto you MUST verify that it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
and putting your iPhoto library on an external drive is NOT a backup - you MUST have a good backup plan like Time Machine running or you are 100% guaranteed to lose your photos sooner or later
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
other media questions need to be ask in the forum for the software you use for them - this forum is only for iPhoto and the above instructions are only for iPhoto

  • Easy question I'm sure. imac hard full (500gb) mostly from iphoto. no capacity left. what are my options? I've thought of an external drive of 1tb and then a 2nd external drive of 3tb to back up both???? please help.

Those are the options - more space is more space.
Moving the iPhoto Library is simple:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
