Installing Tiger from a Disk

I am currently using 10.3.9 and i received Tiger in the post from Apple support.
I haven't loaded it on to my machine yet (a bit nervous!)
Just wondering if by loading on Tiger does it wipe everything on my machine?
And how do i then get from 10.4 to 10.4.11?
I know probably a very basic question... sorry, but hope someone can help?

Not if you select the correct options:

Before doing any changes on your computer it is a good idea to do a complete backup. A bootable clone backup with a Firewire drive means you can always restore your computer 100% should something go wring during any installation.
Cloning And Backup Tools
A bootable clone is an exact copy of your drive which is capable of booting your computer. Making a copy of your computer which is capable of actually starting the computer requires special copying procedures. Some people just back up data files but if you have problems you have to reinstall all your operating system and all your applications. With a bootable clone you just start up from the backup drive and clone back everything.
To copy files from one hard drive to another hard drive you can use:

  • How do you install Tiger using target disk mode?

    Hi guys,
I have an old Powerbook G4 that seems to have a dead DVD drive, so i am now trying to install Tiger using target disk mode from my Macbook Pro.
I successfully mounted the G4 using target disk mode and the Tiger install DVD but when I double click the install icon, I get an error message saying: "Mac OS X 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine"
Okay, fine but i want to install the OS on the G4. How do I go about selecting the G4 for installation?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Nichola,
Have you tried a search on the support site with the error messages you are receiving? (Maybe your computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements to run Tiger.)
To re-initialize your disk, go into disk utilities, select 'Erase' and follow the instructions. This will erase and format your disk. Hopefully this helps, but I'm not sure if it will solve your kernel panic problem - maybe that's a different issue all together??
Hopefully, you've already backed up your important data, but you should try to use target disk mode to do that if you are still unable to boot up the G4 using Tiger. Good luck - hope this is helpful.

  • How do install Tiger from an external USB drive?

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.2.8 to Tiger. How do I install Tiger from my external USB DVD drive? Tiger only comes on DVD and my G4 only has a CD ROM as an internal drive. Is there a way to boot from an external USB DVD drive?

    bamim2,
you obviously just cracked some known hardware restrictions that not even Apple knew how to do: Don't start up from an external USB device.
The procedure you described is the standard procedure for the startup manager. However, as Apple's article explains this does NOT work with USB-devices on PowerPC (G3, G4, G5) based Macs.

  • Install Tiger from Retail DVD or Back up disc?

    Hello,
I love my Raptor 74GB drive... but since I only have 10gigs left free... I am moving on to the 150GB Raptor! I have a Dual 2.7 and I am wondering if I should install Tiger from the system discs or from a retail copy (which I have). Are the restore discs "optimized" for the D2.7?
    Thanks,
    Mike

The restore discs are specific to your G5, but are in no way "optimized."

  • Installing tiger from os 10.2.8

Hey. My system stats are iMac (dome with flat screen)256mb 800mhz powerpc g4. I am running on 10.2.8 currently. here is my dilemma, I just bought an ipod..so imma have to upgrade to tiger so that my expensive ipod purchase wont be in vain...
    okay my question is:
(oh and Im not computer savvy in anyway..so im hoping *crossing fingers* that the installation of Tiger is pain free)
okay.. 1)Before i install tiger, what exactly do i have to back up?
and 2) will i loose the applications currently running on my computer ie photoshop/quark express/office etc..
3)what is the best way for me to back up? dvd? cd?
    4) will i loose everything on my computer that i dont back up
5)is there a possibility that i can mess this up real bad and ruin what i got goin right now (10.2.8)

These are located in your home folder by default, as are all of your other files and most of your preferences.
oh and will the disk ask me if i want to erase and install or upgrade?
    Yes.

  • Installing OS from a disk image

    Hi,
I have quite a few systems that I need to rebuild. I've burned disk images of all the apps we need, onto a FW800 drive which has really sped things up. One thing I can't figure out though, is how to install the OS from a disk image. Each of these systems are getting a fresh hard drive with no OS installed. Booting off the install DVD works fine with fresh drives, but how does one boot into a FW800 drive with a disk image of the install DVD?
I thought cmd-opt-shift-delete was the key stroke for this, but it doesn't work for these systems, can anyone help out?
These systems are a combination of Leopard and Snow Leopard and are all Mac Pro's from the 2006-2007 to the early 2009 models.
    Thanks
    Stuart

Cool, thanks, I was kind of thinking along those lines, but couldn't quite put my finger on it/figure it out, that makes sense, appreciate it.
    Thanks again for quick reply,
    Stuart

  • Install Tiger from an external DVD drive?

I have an old blue & white G3 OS 9.2.1 and I want to install Tiger.
Internal cd drive but an external dvd reader/writer.
Does anyone know how to get the CPU to recognize the external dvd drive for startup?
I tried changing in startup menu - drive was not allowed to be accessed.
Is it all possible to install with a dvd internal drive?
    Hughrayfeather

That machine will not recognize an external DVD reader/writer as a bootable system.
You can get the Tiger Media Exchange on http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/ on the right hand side, which is a CD version of Tiger.
Only newer AGP PowerMac G4s and iMac G3s and iBook G3s with Firewire can boot off external Firewire drives.

  • Re-Installing iCal From Software Disk

I'm trying to re-install iCal from my Leopard Disk, and I read all the discussions online that you use the "optional installs.mpkg" function. When I get to select an application to re-install, it won't let me choose anything. It's greyed out, and it says "skip" beside each application. So how can I re-install iCal?

Use Pacifist to extract it manually, and then rerun all applicable updates.

    Hi,

  • Installing rosetta from SL Disk does not work

    Hello All,
I have spent a good portion of the day trying to install Rosetta from my SL disk; using both the Optional install folder and also utilizing Pacifist software to extract from the SL disk; but without any luck.  Each time I install, my iMac says that the install was successful, HOWEVER, I cannot find it anywhere on my computer; neither in my app folder, using Spotlight, or checking for Rosetta in my App folder in the System Profiler.
    1. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, and...
    2. Help me install Rosetta?

    1. Expecting a system-level component to have an accessible UI. Rosetta mostly works behind the scenes and isn't something which can be interacted with directly. If you know exactly what to do, you can determine whether or not it's present, but it's not worth bothering to check if you've just installed it and aren't having any problems.
    2. See above.

  • How do you make a bootable install partition from a disk image of an install disk.

I have an iMac g4 running Leopard and would like to install OS X 10.3 on a different partition Leopard is on. However the super drive in the iMac will not read the disk I have, so I used my MacBook Pro to make a disk image of the install disk to use to install on the iMac. I do not know how to make the disk image into a bootable partition so I can install 10.3. The person I bought it from has already created a partition of the Leopard install disk and it is bootable but I do not know how he did this. Please help me. Thanks!

Could be the cd is bad.  Could be a bad cd reader.
I' not sure what you are trying to do.
    To install,
--  you need to boot from a cd.
-- copy a working installation from another partition. try carbon-copy-cloner
-- could try target disk mode.  There is a cd sharing mode.

cd sharing across ethernet.  Not sure if this works for booting.

  • Cant Install Tiger From Original Installation Media After Hard Drive Failure.

    I have this MacBook:
    http://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.16-black-13 -mid-2007-specs.html
Hard Drive failed (no boot, nasty clicking sound).
I installed a new hard drive. Tried to install Snow Leopard from a retail disk - it would boot from the disc and I would get partway through the installation before stalling.
After doing research, I realized I needed to install from the original installation media (tiger) and then upgrade to a newer OS.
I dont have the Original installation media, called up Apple - paid their fees, got the 4 installation discs and no pressing C while booting, or pressing the option key will get the computer to boot from that installation disc.
    I just get a folder with a ?
I know the drive works fine, because it booted normally from the Snow Leopard disc.
I know the new disc Apple sent is good, because I put it in my other computer (iMac) and saw the installer and was able to open the PDF readme.
Now im stuck - cant reinstall the OS because I cant get it to boot off the disc!
When holding down the C button during boot, I can hear the disc drive making noise - but all i get this that blinking folder with a ?

I could not boot into time machine's external drive. I used my snow leopard disk to install and and then Mavericks from app store. Then migration assistant.
I am thinking about a backup to my backup.
    thanks for the help.

  • Can't install Tiger from Leopard

    Hi everybody,
I'm running Leopard on my flat panel iMac but I'd like to move down to Tiger.
The iMac recognizes the install disc but nothing happens when I double-click the installer (the iMac just boots to Leopard).
I've also tried holding down the "c" key as I restart but I get a question mark.
Finally, I tried setting startup disc to the Tiger install CD but it just boots to Leopard.
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Mike

That is unfortunate, with the G4 Cube.
Did you try the Option key at startup, to get Startup Manager?
If you can't get it startup from that retail Tiger DVD, you could try to do an installation onto the that iMac G4's hard drive, using another supported PowerPC Mac to run the installation. I see you have an iMac G5 in your profile. It needs to be a PowerPC Mac, because there are separate PowerPC and Intel builds for Tiger. This method involves using FireWire Target Disk Mode.

If you have that other Mac and want more details, please post back.

  • Install SSD from Recovery Disks (newerToshiba), or how?

    http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/Will-Toshiba-Recovery-Discs-properly-align...
^ See the last post of that thread.   The writer made recovery disks from the new laptop, then installed the SSD and used the recovery disks to install the operating system and software onto the new SSD.  (Didn't clone the hard drive, in other words.)
If you don't need to save settings and migrate files, is recovery-disks-to-SSD the best way to go?
I have a U505-S2012 Satelllite and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD sitting here, ready to go,  LoL.  But I didn't know whether it was even possible to make the recovery disks install to a SSD.  Or make them install to a hard drive that's smaller than the original.
    Any thoughts or advice?
    Thanks!

As for me it's no matter how to install win7 on the new SSD drive - fresh install, clone hdd or use Factory Recovey media. For the x220 I've used the 2nd and 3rd methods.
As for twiking of win7 after a not clean installation just use sw from Intel for their SSD or twik it youself during 10-15 min. Alignment is not a problem if you use an SSD with TRIM support.
If you need UEFI the only clean installation is the method.
