Installing Time Machine on Time Capsule

It seems I have made a huge mistake in buying a Time Capsule. I managed to get a copy of my MacBook Pro Lion OS on the TC via ethernet cable between both. However, afterwards it was not possible to see the disk in the Time Machine. After setting up a wifi connection there was a green light in the Airport Utility window and on the TC. Nevertheless, TM does not see the TC disk. I managed to erase the backup on TC from the Airport Utility, but that does not give me a new set up possibility. The TC disk was visible in Airport Utility though.
What is wrong? What am I doing wrong?
Is it at all possible to wifi connect a TC with Time Machine from a MacBook Pro? If I get it working it seems to be a matter of changing the network to allow the TM backup, as my wifi is normally connected to my local network and modem.
I am now trying to get the system working by connecting an ethernet cable to my network from my modem and setting it all up via my iMac. More problems. The Airport Utility does not recognize the TC at all. There is no manual setup possible as the button is greyed out.
I am at a loss how to get this awful thing working.
Any ideas?

Yes it is perfectly possible to use the WiFi in the TC to connect, but you must first set up the TC while connected by cable to the internet. as I explained above. Did that work?
Did you give the WiFi in the TC another name than the BT Hub WiFi (do that).
Remark: TC with the latest firmware update has a much better WiFi "reach" than the BT Hub. But do the FW update only when everything works perfectly.
We are here also to learn not just to help (this is a users forum not Apple). So please give as much info as you can (eg. OS version, Hardware model and age, etc).

I'm a first timer on this (or any) help site. I just installed Time Capsule.  The first backup looks like it will take two days at the present speed.  Can I close MacBook Pro and have first back up continue, and can I unplug tomorrow and plug in at work without affecting the backup?

    Hi Oneinspirit,
Time Machine backups can be paused by choosing "Stop Backing Up" from the Time Machine icon on the right hand side of your menu bar ( ). Once you're ready to resume the backup, you can choose "Back Up Now" from the same icon.
Start a backup: Click the Time Machine icon  in the menu bar, then choose Back Up Now.
Pause a backup: Click the Time Machine icon  in the menu bar, then choose Stop Backing Up.

  • Installed Time Capsule, now want to delete/clean files from mac mini HD, is there an easy way to do this?

I've installed Time Capsule and using Time Machine backed up all my files from my Mac Mini (mid 2010) and verified they're there, now, as nervous as I am to do this, I want to clean/delete all the files on my mac mini hard drive, is there an easier and faster way than just moving to trash and deleting them? Looks like that can take hours.
My intention is to use the Time Capsule as a Hard drive so I can clean my Mac Mini hd since it was reaching capacity.
    Thanks!

Ok, I just googled how to format my external hard drive to Mac OS extended (Journaled), no problem, understood.
Bear with me, I'm not too computer savvy, then connect to my mac mini, copy all my files to that ext. hd, then in system pref for the TC don't add to exclude?
I don't think I want to keep that also permanently connected to TC as then I'm backing two hardrives?

  • After installing Time Capsule internet connection slow

Since I installed Time Capsule on my Mac, my internet connection started acting up. The web browsing is VERY SLOW, and applications that are web-based no longer work properly. For instance, I have an EyeFi Wireless Explore SD card and the related EyeFi Manager software that allows me to wirelessly transfer my photos on the eyefi card to the eyefi website, as well as my photo service (Kodak Gallery or Flickr) and also transfers the photos to my Mac. Before I set up my Time Capsule, the eyefi system worked flawlessly. Now the uploads hang up and do not complete. I also have very slow progress trying to use my webmail, or loading webpages in general. I use the Safari browser.
My Time Capsule is set up as a separate wireless network, so I access the internet thru my original home wireless network. Is anyone having the same issues after installing Time Capsule, and does anyone have a solution?

Try doing a Safe Mode reboot by holding down the Shift key when you hear the start-up tone. When the progress bar appears you can release the key. A Safe Reboot will clear some of the caches, it's possible one became corrupt. If that doesn't work do both a SMC and PRAM reset, you may need to do each 2-3x.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Many problems after installing Time Capsule

I am not sure if this is the correct forum. I posted it on the iCloud forum, but think it belongs here. I wasn't able to move it.
    Here is my story:
    Where do I start!
    MacBook Pro ~2009
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
About the time I installed Time capsule, I started to have the following problem. At fist, i thought the problem as iCloud.
    Here is my problem:
    1. Can't get iCloud email on my Mac  [I can ob my iPhone 4S]
    2. I keep getting an error accessing any website: Safari can't verify the identity of the website... This includes Apple.com
    3. In my Key Chain, the passwords for Me.com are long apparently random numbers.
    4. I can't access any iCloud email from my iCloud that was associated with my ME account. I hahe a secondiCloud account which appears fibe.
    5. I can't even open iCloud on Safari. As soon as iCloud shows up on the screen, It says that iCloud had unexpectidly stopped. When i hit the reload option, the error message returns... over and over.
    6. When i tried to opem iCloud on Google Chrome, I get a HUGE error message on a red page saying "The server's certificate is no valid!"
There are probably more symptoms that occured, but I am so frustrated I may have forgotten.
Oh yeaf, a week ago I got a new Apple Time Capsile 2T
    Maybe it's not iCloud?!?
EDIT: THis did not happen when I first got the TIme Capsule. It started 2 days ago. I also got a message about setting up Back To My Mac, but I only have one Mac [I don't mean that having multiple Macs is an asperation, because I am thourily pleased having "just one Mac", and an iPhone 4S and an iPad 3; That's quite a blessing!]
    MacBook Pro, iOS 5.1.1

Easy like beauty when it comes to Networking is in the eye of the beholder.
Your issue is probably double NAT.. the TC should have thrown up warning messages.
    On lion
Step one.. install 5.6 utility. And use that exclusively.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
It will be familiar if you used any previous version of airport utility.
Open the manual setup.. go to Internet tab.. go to connection sharing at the bottom..
The TC must be set to off bridge mode. If not, select that and update the TC.
Now everything is going to totally mess up.. don't worry.. start again by rebooting the entire network.. ie everything off.. not sleep.. not semi-consious.. off. Restart in order.. with 2 min wait.. Modem.. router.. TC.. other network rubbish.. (if you have switch and the like).. clients.
Now try again with emails etc.
    I am hopeful.

  • Forgot partition after installing time capsule.

I installed Time Capsule on my airport.
I did not realize that I had to make a partition first, as it is now using my full 2 TB.
What should I do now as I only want 500GB to use for Time Capsule and the rest as hard disk.
    Please advice next steps.
    Thanks in advance

    Guy,
Here is a link on how to limit the size of your TM backup.

This may be a better option than creating a disk image for your data.
I think I'll try this myself with my TM backup.

  • I can't see my network Printers when i installed Time Capsule

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I had a wireless network using my NetGear router so i can share internet and two network printers. The network printers are connected to the router using ethernet wires. Now that i installed Time Capsule i can't get the Network Printer to print.

I did what you said, made sure that both network printers where turned on connected to TC and ready to print, then i opened my system Preference, Print & Fax, i removed my two printers that where there before and working, then hit the plus sign, add printer, here's what's different, my MacBook Pro, under AppleTalk and one of my printers can up and it now works but the other didn't. So on my iMac i tried the same thing but no printer showed up under AppleTalk, i did find the two printers under "Default" and Bonjour was under "kind" i said install to both and it did. I just tried printing to both printers and now i have two bouncing printer icons on my doc with a massage " Attempting to connect to host 192.168.1.10" for one of the printers and the second "Attempting to connect to host XRX92CABD.local." i'm starting to think that i didn't set up the TC correctly or i have some option in TC setup wrong.

  • Problem installing time capsule

Installing time capsule for the first time and get a flashing amber light, airport utility cant find the device - any help?

If you haven't already, connect directly to the TC using ethernet. Then try the utility again.. if it still fails, turn off wireless in the computer and make sure there is nothing else connected.. ie this is off the network.. one computer one TC.. nothing else. If you still have issues press the reset again and let it go back to factory defaults,, it should then be found.. if it fails, check the ethernet cable, connectivity leds, or use a different computer.

Many posts give minimal information but I think you probably should receive the grand prize.. least info ever delivered in a post.
From your post I know that you installed a time capsule. I have no idea how or to what.
That your printer.. type model connection all unknown now does not work..
Sorry but the crystal ball is totalled and the other black arts of which wireless is perhaps one, is off-limits.
    Minimum info needed.
    What printer?
    Connected how?
Is it still available on the network? Can you ping it?

  • HT1178 Can I install Time Capsule strictly as a back-up to my local devices?

Can I install Time Capsule strictly as a back-up to my Windows laptop and Apple devices without using it as an Airport Extreme Base Station? I do not want to use my Time Capsule as my access to the Internet, just as a back-up. I have U-verse voice and data services and am using their wireless router to connect to the Internet.

    You are asking multiple questions..
The setup of the TC can have a whole bunch of variations. If you followed the instructions to plug in by ethernet and turn off wireless, then all connection is via the uverse modem router.
    TerrenceV wrote:
Thank you.  Since I am not using my TC to connect to the Internet - I have U-verse, so I installed AT&T's wireless router - it was recommended that I put the TC into bridge mode and connect it to the router using the ethernet.  Without wireless, how do I send my backups to the TC?
If you don't use wireless then you use ethernet.. it can be plugged into either the uverse router or the TC..makes no difference.
Should I disconnect the ethernet, re-establish wireless, and let all my Apple and Windows 7 devices use their active wireless connections to backup to the TC?  If so, how do I direct the backups to TC?  I have Airport installed on my Windows 7 primary computer.  Again, thanks for the help.
Why do you want to use wireless if you have ethernet? Ethernet is much better and faster.
If ethernet is not available you can use wireless.. if you turned off wireless in the TC.. then all connections will be via the uverse .. TC .. nothing wrong with that.
If you leave the TC wireless on.. then you can connect to TC instead and use TC. That is also fine.. makes no difference .. use what works.
I think you need to play some more.. you questions show you are not understanding the fundamentals..
In bridge the TC is a dumb hard drive.. plus switch.. plus wireless AP.
Plugged into the uverse router.. it is like the uverse router now has more switch ports.. a secondary wireless AP and a hard disk.. they are effectively one unit. Any connection to uverse is connection to TC.. any connection to TC is connection to uverse..

  • Installing Time Capsule on MacBook Pro w/malfunctioning CD player

I recently purchased a Time Capsule for my daughter who has a MacBook Pro with malfunctioning CD player (long story). Is there anyway of installing the setup software from the web or support site?

if your daughter's Mac is on the same network as yours, you could use *remote install* to install the setup software on her machine.
click here and follow the instructions.
or, you could enable *remote disc* on your machines with the same result. see this:
The CD/ROM in my computer busted, so I decided to try to remotely mount the CD from another computer on mine. I know the MacBook Air can do this, so I reasoned that any Mac could. It turns out it is possible, but the solution is far from obvious -- after much searching, I found the solution here.
Here's a quick synopsis. Go to System Preferences » Sharing, and enable 'DVD or CD Sharing.' (I think you need to do this on both machines -- the one with the drive and the one without the CD/ROM drive). Then, on the computer that does not have the CD drive on it, go to a Terminal window and enter:
$ defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true
$ defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true
Reboot this machine, and when the reboot is finished, you'll see the remote CD/DVD under Devices in the Finder's sidebar. Thereafter, you can remotely mount a CD/DVD from another machine.

  • Slow shutdown after installing time capsule. Please help

    Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing some troubles when restarting or shutting down my iMac Intel 8gb RAM late 2010. It takes longer than usual ( before I buy my 4th gen. Time capsule it Was very quick) and now, after I installed it I can see the grey spinning wheel and a geey blank screen for several seconds before it goes off.
    Things I already tried
.  reparing permissions from Lion recovery  mode (some of them can not be repaired. I already tried almost everything)
. Onyx all maintenance options passed.
    . Disabled time machine
. Deleted home folder preferences from terminal (revia reset password )
My iMac Is running Lion 10.7.2
I've configured my time capsule in bridge mode, with automatic backup copies
I'm sharing Time capsule disk over wan and Internet.
I've configured iCloud with back To my Mac, documents and the rest of options
Please, I need some help¡. Can you help me?

  • Clean Install + Time Capsule

My G5 seems to be running slowly, so I want to erase my drive and reinstall everything. I have all of my files backed up on a time capsule.
My question is this: If I do a clean install will I be able to get my files from the Time Capsule? It seems like my time machine backup is 'linked' to my computer - so if I do a clean install will it still be linked?
I am guessing it's linked because I have 2 other computers that also use the Time Capsule as a backup....
I just don't want to do a clean install and then try to recover my files and be unable to do so because Time Machine is unable to locate any backup that is linked to my computer.....

Maybe they were using imprecise terminology. Seems to happen a lot.
You can use Time Capsule without any Internet (WAN, or outside) connection. But you can only reach Time Capsule through a network (LAN, or local) connection - Ethernet or wireless. I guess a lot of people need to learn that "the Internet" and "a network" are not the same thing.
