Installing Transparent Gateways

I have a question that I hope someone here can help me with.
We want to utilize the MSSQL Transparent Gateway to connect to a SQL Server DB. However, the gateway was not installed at the time of the Oracle Install.
Now we want to go back and install but we have patched to a higher version of Oracle and the universal installer won't let us install the product.
Surely there is a way to install without doing a completely new Oracle install.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How do you apply the patch? Don't you need to install a newer version of Oracle Install for that?

Oracle 9i on LINUX Transparent Gateway for SQL Server

Does anybody know if there is a Transparent Gateway available for Oracle 9i on LINUX to connect to SQL Server? I have run the installer and cannot seem to find the install options for any Transparent Gateways. I am familiar with their location in the universal installer as I have installed the Oracle/SQL Server Transparent Gateway with Oracle in WinNT. Perhaps Transparent Gateways for Oracle/LINUX are not available?

I have the same issue - we want to upgrade our 9.2 to 10g Linux, and need to maintain connectivity to some legacy sqlserver databases. I can't find any mention of tg4msql for linux. What gives? Anyone know the answer to this? thanks, michael

Ora-12154 problem with database link and transparent gateway

Hello,
I’m trying to make a communication between oracle and SQL server 2005.
I use oracle 10g E.E Release 10.2.0.3.0 and the transparent gateway for SQL server 10201_gatway_win32.zip.
Install:
The oracle database is installed into a server named ss-serv. This server has two partition disk C and E. Oracle database is installed in E and the gateway in C. There is already a database (instance) running in the oracle home (in E).
I configured the gateway as described into: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B...3/conf_sql.htm.
In sql server 2005, there is a database running named ClientTricks.
I created a user named Avogadro with a login.
In the partition C where the gateway is installed, the file inittg4msql.ora is like this:
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO= ss-serv. ClientTricks
The file sqlnet.ora where the gateway is installed is configured like this:
SQLNET.AUTHENTIFICATION_SERVICES=(NTS)

I configured the listener that is in the C partition where the gateway is installed, and the tnsnames that is in the oracle database in E partition disk like this:

After edited the listener, I stop and start the listener for the transparent gateway from administrative tools in the services.
Then, connected in oracle (in a database named fakeclient) I created a database link in sqlplus.The the dblink were created, but when I tried to querry some data from ClientTricks by executing the following instructions:
select * from s_client@dblink
i got this fatal and terrible error :
ora-12154 TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
I verified all my procedure and stapes, all seems to be good. I did a tnsping of mytg4msql
I got this error in the command prompt:TNS-03505 fail to resolve name

Is transparent gateway needed to connect to IS Cache database?

I have been asked by one of our developers how to create a connection from his Oracle 11.2 database to SQL Server and also InterSystems Cache' databases without having to use Transparent Gateway?
Is this possible, and if so, how can it be done?

Hi,
You say - "I guess it means that Oracle Database Gateway is FREE (per se)" but to make the point again - only the Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) is free. The other gateways need a license.
If you run on Windows then many of the Microsoft ODBC drivers are free or included as part of other products so you do not need to pay for them, and also many non-Oracle database providers include an ODCB driver as part of the product, so again you do not need to pay for anything else to use DG4ODBC, for example MySQL.
To interface with a Cache database you can use Dg4ODBC but you need to provide the ODBC driver. There is not a 'dedicated' database gateway for that product. That is why we provide the DG4ODBC which can interface with any non-Oracle database or datastore for which a compatible ODBC driver is available.

Linking to SQL Server using Transparent Gateways

I want to use the Transparent Gateways to link to a SQL Server DB.
I downloaded Oracle Enterprise Server from OTN.
As far as I can tell, the Transparent Gateways are supposed to be bundled with Oracle Enterprise Server, but I can't find them from the Universal Installer.
Does anyone know how I install the Gateways? Are they included with the downloaded Oracle Enterprise Server? If not, do I need to get the Oracle Enterprise Server CD Pack?

Transparent gateway to Sybase: connection error

I have been trying with little success to set up a transparent gateway to a sybase server.
The gateway is an NT 4 workstation, with an oracle server 8.1.7 installed. The sybase server is an ASE 12.0 on a Solaris 8 box.
Are these versions of the products supported? In the gateway documentation only Sybase 11 is mentioned...
Moreover all the examples/schemas given refer to an installation of the gateway on the same machine as the sybase server, whereas in my case the gateway is installed on a separate machine (but it is also stated that this configuration is allowed, provided a sybase client is installed togheter with the gateway).
From what I can make of the error messages / trace files, the problem lies in the gateway not finding the sybase server. But from the sybase client installed on the gateway machine I can connect to the same remote sybase server without hassles, so the sybase client is configured correctly.

The supported products that we list in the manual is only what we have tested at print time. However we update our certification matrix regularly.
Please refer to the certification matrix on Technet.com ( http://otn.oracle.com/products/gateways/pdf/certmatrix2.pdf) for the latest certified configurations.
It looks like you have installed the gateway in the same Oracle home as the database. With v8.1.6 of the gateway this is not possible. With v9.x onwards this is possible.
You can either reinstall the gateway in another Oracle home or upgrade to v9.x.
I recommend that you upgrade to v9.x, since v8.x will be desupported shortly.
As of v9.x the Sybase gateway is located on the database CD and you can install it by doing a custom install.

Help Configuring Transparent Gateway for Ms Sql Server

I have Installed Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 with Transparent Gateway for Ms Sql Server.
Followed the configuration furnished therein the Documents for Tnsnames.ora & Listener.ora.
Connection to Sql Server 2000 is NOT SUCCESSFUL. Trace File contents from Tg4sql is furnished below :

Oracle Transparent Gateway for MS SQL Server

I successfully installed the Oracle transparent Gateway for MS SQL Server for Oracle 8i. Now I am doing the same for Oracle 9i.
Does anyone know how to 'create a new gateway service' on 9i???
This is how you would do that on 8i on the Windows box...
1) At the MS-DOS prompt, enter:
> set GTW_EXE=TG4MSQL.EXE
2) To create a new gateway service name, enter:
> GTWSRV73 sid -CREATE | MORE
-where sid is the gateway sid.
Does anyone know how to do those steps for 9i Oracle Transparent Gateway?

Oracle transparent gateway sql server ORA.28511

I tried to install the gateway for ms sql server and failed, can anyone help me?
the 1. computer - database server is a hpux with oracle 8.1.7
the 2. computer - gateway computer is a win 2k with oracle transparent gateway 9.0.1
the 3. computer - Sql Server is a Computer with WinXP and SQL Server 2000 SP3
what i did:
-i created an entry in tnsnames.ora at the database server
-i cerated an entry in listener.ora at the gateway computer.
-i created the file inittg4nidb.ora (tg4nidb = SID)
-i created a database user at the sql server
-i created a database link in oracle
then i tried to select data from the sql server database and i got the following message:

There is not enough information for me to figure out why you are getting this error. Basically the error indicates that the gateway has crashed.
Please set the HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = DEBUG and take a look at the trace file.
Also send the tnsnames entry as well as the listener.ora

Accessing SQL Server from ORACLE using Transparent Gateway

So I had downloaded the gateway installer and was following the guide here to set up the Transparent Gateway for SQL Server: http://www.orafusion.com/art_orahs.htm
After I had created the database link, I was prompted the following error when trying to do a simple select statement from the SQL Server DB:

I did restart my listener under services.msc whenever I make the changes but there are no effect. Please also note that I can only find "OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener" under my services.msc. There is no 11.2 Listener. I did install the gateway and the installation was successful as far as I can tell. Next point is the tnsping you've used is 11.2. You need to make sure that you use the tnsping of the Oracle Database home as the database initiates the gateway connection so the database home tnsnames,ora needs the tns entry for the gateway.

Are the Oracle Transparent Gateways SAP approved

Gentlemen: Thanks in advance for your reply. I am new on this gateway world and I am trying to find the best solution for us.
Situation ... DB Migration of SAP 4.5B from MSSQL to Oracle8 in Sun Solaris (No problem with this).
We run a VB application that connects to SAP using SAPComm to read from SAP and update, asl well.
Problem: We will do the migration but the developer of the application in VB may not be open to change their coding, and we found the option of replicating db tables from Oracle to MSSQL, once we migrate, with the Oracle Gateway, which produce something transparent to the VB application.
Questions:
1. Does SAP approve this kind of accesses/replications to their DBs without us affecting our license agreement with them? I should ask this question to SAP, but if you know already, that will defenitely help?
2. I understand this tool (Oracle Transparent Gateway) is available as of Oracle9i. Our migrated SAP system will be running on Oracle8, but it is my understanding it does not matter the version of Oracle we are running our db, because what we procure is the Oracle9i to be installed separately to interact with both SAP (Oracle8) and MSSQL. Is that right? Could I build that scenario? If yes, how much is for the Oracle9i license. Should acquire it through SAP (I guess not)?

You can use Oracle Streams to replicate from Oracle to SQL Server. This is a feature of Oracle 9.2.
This feature uses the Oracle Transparent Gateway for SQL Server to communicate between Oracle and SQL Server.
This is licensed separately from the database. Oracle 8 can communicate with Oracle 9i using DB links.

Is Transparent Gateway (4.1.1.1) supported in Oracle 8i

Hi We are having some RDB databases running in conjunction with Oracle 8.0.6.0.0 databases. We have installed Oracle 8.1.7.0.0 recently, and I am wondering if this 8i version is supporting Oracle Transparent Gateway ???
I ran an export in the existing DB 8.0.6, and I get this error during the import to 8.1.7.0.0:

Oracle access tables in SQLServer through Transparent Gateway

HI,
I want to access tables in SQLServer2000 through Oracle Transparent Gateway, but i could not get the resqult when I excute sql " select * from mytable@tg4msql".
everthing seems all right and when i use " *tnsping tg4msql* ", it also return OK:

it seems oracle tries to connect to SQLServer through database link but fail.
And i check Transparent Gateway debug log : ORACLE_HOME\tg4msql\trace\tg4msql_agt_964.trc,
the log stops when it gets the logon name.

I checked the active sessions, and found a session was creating databse link, but it didn't stop until i kill it.

I have installed the transparent gateway and SQLServer in the same computer.
maybe something wrong happened when transparent gateway connect to the SQLServer. But i don't know how to check it.

Why use Transparent gateway in stead of heterogenous Connectivity

I am looking for a solution to update data in a AS400 environment through a oracle DB.
I found information to do this. I can use transparent gateways or Generic Connectivity.
Generic connectivity is free and for transparent gateways I have to pay.
But what is the different between the two?
What is the limitation of Generic connectivity?

As you stated, Generic Connectivity is for free - from the Oracle license point of view.
But it requires a 32bit ODBC driver from a 3rd party vendor which might require to purchase a license for the ODBC driver.
The big difference is GC (=HSODBC) is NOT availbale for all platforms (only in 10g for Sun Sparc Solaris, AIX, HP-UX RISC, Linux 32bit and Windows) AND it is bundled with the Oracle database. This means you MUST have an Oracle database installed on the machine where you configure generic connectivity.
The gateway (TG4DRDA) or TG4DB2400 is independant from an Oracle db.
TG4DB2400 is installed on the AS400 machine and you can connect from any Oracle db on any platform to the gateway which then handles the connection.
Similar for TG4DRDA; only the platform availibility is different.
The next big difference/advantage of the gateways is the 2PC (2 phase commit) or distributed update control. You can insert something into the Oracle db and without commiting into the foreign db. Now commit your work and the gateway takes care that the transaction is only valid if BOTH inserts went well.

Transparent Gateway DB2

Can anyone help me here.
I have a client that want's to run Oracle 10g Apps Server, Oracle 10g Database, Transparent Gateway DB2, and a DB2 database all on the same architecture.
IBM pSeries(p_590) and the latest AIX operating system.
I am happy with Apps Server and Database on this platform but what if any version of the transparent gateway do I require????

look at the transparent gateway certification matrix in metalink.
u can install the gateway in the same oracle_home as the database in case both are the same realeses.
