Installing Two Optical Drives in Quicksilver G4

Hello,
I found a good deal on a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver. It's the basic model from back then. It has the 733MHz G4 processor. It only has a CD burner and 512 MB of RAM. I bought a new "Superdrive" DVD burner and another 512MB of RAM from Other World Computing. The second drive is a ZIP drive. I never really use ZIP drives. Is there some way I could remove the ZIP drive and install the original CD-RW drive in that spot? It doesn't look like the inside metal casing would be able to hold the drive in the second (lower spot). Also, is there some way I could install another second silver "flap" for the second drive if I could install another?
Thanks!
Brandon

Hi Brandon,
The Zip slot is for 3.5" drives as you have discovered. It can be modified but involves removal of a lot of sheet metal. If you're intent on doing it there's a guide online but I can't locate it. Maybe someone has the link. It's much less trouble to just replace the current drive with the Super Drive.

  • Installing #2 optical drive in G4

First, I must be losing my mind. I can't find the search window for searching the archives on the beloved site. All I see is (Search) top right, but when I enter a word, I do NOT get the usual screen for reading past posts.
That said: I have just installed a 2nd CD-Rom (from older G3) into the second bay of my G4. At first, both doors opened, then only the bottom, then only the top. What are the magic words for making this work? How much do the jumpers have to do with these drives, or do I removed all he jumpers? No idea how one selects one drive over the other.
A little MORE help from my friends, please.
    Patt

I found the answer on http://forums.macrumors.com. When there are two optical drives available, a small "eject" symbol shows up on the top of the desktop menu, in the area of the "date and time". F12 ejects top CD and Alt F12 ejects the second cd.
Guess I get the points for this answer. But, still can't figure out what happened to the search window and the subscribe to topic option.

  • Installing an optical drive in a G4 tower

    Hello,
How do I remove my current CD/DVD read only drive and install a new DVD/CD double layer burner in my 400 mhz G4 tower?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Valentine

    Hi
Instructions for replacing the optical drive, including a QuickTime movie, can be found here (under Drives - CD/DVD Drive):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75312
Removing the old drive just involves releasing the drive face plate clips to remove the face plate, undoing the two screws that secure the drive carrier to the computer and sliding the drive carrier forward, unplugging the ribbon and power cables. With the drive carrier removed from the computer, it's then just a case of undoing the four screws that hold the drive in the carrier. Installation of the new drive is the reverse of this process, having made sure the jumpers on the back of the new drive are set correctly.
    I hope this helps.

  • Installing second optical drive and the door hangs

This is just an FYI post, have not been able to find anyone else with the exact same problem, but thought I would list in the event of.
I originally installed an internal DVD R/RW Lightscribe drive from LaCie in a Power Mac G4 Dual 1Gig and it worked well! I have since purchased a MacPro and wanted to move the Lightscribe drive into the second optical drive bay. So after installing the drive and attempting to open the tray it was apparent that the door on the case would not allow the tray to open. The front of the Lightscribe tray was too bulky to fit through the opening on the narrower Mac Pro optical drive door.
Well, the folks at Lacie had attached a nameplate to the front of the tray that works fine in other configurations, but on the MacPro the clearance for the tray is narrower and it's bulk would not activate the sliding door properly.
Someone was thinking, because the tray nameplate is detachable with a little effort. I can provide photos if need be.
Tray closes as it should now.

    Hi TCherry,
Your situation interests me since I was thinking of doing the same with a previous optical drive from an old G4. I also wanted to add it to my MacPro's 2nd slot.
Are you still willing to supply some pics to see what you did?
    Rio.

  • Install second optical drive mac pro

Although there are several support documents available from Apple on how to replace the hard drive and replace the optical drive in a Mac Pro, I could not locate a pdf on how to install a second optical drive. In this case, I wanted to add a Blu-Ray recorder to my mid-2010 Mac Pro. I found what I was looking for on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHjuKL2BS4Y This is a video by the reputable OWC (One World Computing) and its very easy to follow.

  • Acrobat XI Install without Optical Drive

I have purchase Acrobat XI but do not have an optical drive on my new laptop.  Is there a way to install via the serial number that came with the CD?

Just download XI from http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html. Please make a backup, though you do have the CD so that is probably not important for you. You can also consider taking the CD to your local library and copying the install files to a memory stick.

  • How do I setup 1 serial ata hdd + 1 ide hdd + two optical drives?

    Hello,
I'm new with MSI Boards. I'm unable to get everything recognized by the BIOS. Can someone please explain me how should I setup the configuration and were and what should I connect to what connector or slot.
I'll really appreaciate your help due that I have been trying for 1 week and I can't figure how to put it. Thanks

    Connect the SATA to serial1
Connect the optical drive that you'll be running the XP setup disk from to IDE2
Don't connect any other drives yet.
    In Bios>>Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config:
    Native mode
    PATA only
    Keep SATA enabled-Yes
    PATA channels- Both
    configure SATA as Raid-No
    Leave other stuff alone.
    Bios>>Advanced Features>>Boot device selection:
    Set your preferred boot order.
Reboot from the XP setup CD and install XP
Power off and connect the IDE Hdd to IDE1(set jumpers for single drive)
Connect the other optical drive to IDE2(set jumpers correctly)
    Reboot.
    This should work!

  • What is the maximum hard drive height for installing two hard drives in the 2011 Mac Mini

In a few months I'll be buying a Mac Mini. I want to upgrade the stock hard drive with a Seagate Momentus XT Solid state Hybrid Drive(720 RPM), which is 9.5 mm tall.
I would like to add a second hard drive, a Seagate Constellation(7200 RPM), which has a "15mm z-height".
I want to use those hard drives so I can have a speedy Mac Mini, but also have a great amount of storage(1.75 terabytes). My largest priority is storage space, but I also would like to use 7200 RPM hard drives as speed is also a priority.
I would like to know if those two hard drives would both fit in the 2011 Mac Mini.
And also, what does "Z-height" mean in regards to hard drives?

9.5mm is the standard 2.5" drive height. This thread says one 15mm drive may fit, but recommends against a Seagate Constellation drive, due to the amount of power it draws.
One option would be to add an external mini-stack, then storage space becomes a secondary concern. If you want speed, install an SSD for the operating system then put everything else on secondary storage.

  • Install without optical drive

How can I install software without having an optical drive on my MacBook Air?

If you're talking about the current version, you can download the trial and enter your serial number into that. For older versions, one way would be to copy the contents of your discs to something like a thumb drive and use that instead. If you're near an apple store they'll sometimes let you do this there, using an external disc drive.

  • Help needed installing new optical drive in a G4 Cube

Long story short, my Cube's optical drive died a few months back and after trying all of the standard troubleshooting procedures (restarting, resetting the PMU, etc) I have since removed the drive altogether. Last night, I successfully ran the Cube with an optical drive taken from a trashed 2006 MacBook, but there is one small catch: with everything correctly connected, the new drive and the old circuitry do not fit back into the housing (link goes to image of the conundrum: http://img683.imageshack.us/i/picture1wv.png/)
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can fix this? The new drive is considerably smaller than the original, and I have a good amount of room to stuff other wires in there for some sort of adapter. Ideally, I am looking for a slim ATAPI to slim ATAPI cable that is about 6" long, but I have yet to find anything of the like. Any thoughts?
(Note: a Western Digital Caviar 80GB HDD was installed about 18 months ago and is currently set to slave in order to run the new optical drive. Also, I have not been able to test sound as I do not have USB-powered speakers.)

I don't have a laptop but I believe that laptop drives are not the same size as the standard 5.25 inch drives in desktop computer. It would probably be cheaper and easier to simply buy a new optical drive of the correct size.

Pioneer drives in the past have been a safe bet, from [OWC|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Pioneer/DVR116DBK> or [Newegg|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129023], however, check [Jeff's January 2010 post about re-branded Pioneer drives|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10839236#10839236] that are no longer really Pioneer manufactured.

  • MBP doesn't see newly installed SSD (installed into optical drive bay)

    Hi all,
Re-posting, from an earlier post, with a more specific topic.  I recently installed an OWC 2.5" SSD, via the OWC Data Doubler, replacing my old, non-working, optical drive.  I installed it step-by-step, from their installation video.  BTW - I also installed a RAM upgrade, and, that installation (although admittedly easier than the SSD install) is working fine.  However, my MBP is not "seeing" any new drive.  Does anyone know if there is a step that I am missing?  Or have an idea what I may have done wrong?
I re-opened the machine and double checked that all 3 "connections":
    From SSD to Data Doubler Frame;
From Data Double Frame to SATA tab; and
    SATA connector to the motherboard;
WERE ALL SEATED PROPERLY.  Yet, the MBP still does NOT see the newly installed drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    MJ

    Hi,
Have you tried booting up while holding down the Option key and the selecting the SSD? Or putting the SSD in the other bay?

  • Installing 2nd Optical Drive (Jumper Selection)

I purchased a Retail Plextor PX-760A DVD Burner which was on sale at Dell.com for C$99.
When installing the secondary drive what setting should the jumper be on. Should I put it in 'Cable Select' mode or 'Slave' mode.
    Help is appreciated.

The OEM should be set to CS. So that is what to use. You cannot mix master/slave jumper settings with cable select on the same bus.
You'll know when you press Option + Eject

  • Two optical drive hook-up?

Where do I hook the second audio cable from a dvd-rw when my CD-r is already plugged into CD-1?

You don't need to hook up either. Use Device Manager, right click on your optical drive, select properties, go to the Properties tab and check enable digital playback.

  • Can I install two regular (non SSD) drives on an iMac?

I noticed that you can configure an iMac to come with one regular hard drive and one SSD drive. I was wondering if you could install two regular drives instead? I would like to use one hard drive as a back up drive but in order for that to work they both would need to be about the same capacity.

There simply isn't enough room for two regular sized (3.5 inches) harddisks.
The SSD has a size of 2.5 inches and for that there seems to be enough room for that size.
iFixit has done a teardown of the 27" iMac http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac-Intel-27-Inch-Teardown/1236/1
