Installing UCS 240 M3 SFF

Hi,
We have purchased 4 Cisco UCS 240 M3 SFF(Two each in 2 Data Center) for migrating hardware from Cisco MCS to Cisco UCS.We have purchased VMware vSphere Standard 5 software directly from VMware.As new to virtualized server platform ,will help if some one can answer below-
-Is there any good document which mentions step by step procedure how to install & bring up the UCS 240 M3 SFF server. Example-start with RAID followed with ESXi install, vSphere/vCentre..
-Is there any SRND,best practice document for Cisco UCS 240 M3 SFF -RAID,NIC, vCentre..
- We have 14 hard disks per server. What is the recommended RAID configuration.RAID5?Any good document on RAID configuration?
- Do we need two vCenter to manage all the VMs on 4 servers in two Data Centers taking into account of redundancy if one vCenter fails or WAN failure between data Centers.
- I need to install and bring up the UCS server remotely. If I configure the management IP through BIOS and connect the management port to the network, can I configure rest of the server remotely?
- I see four 1 GB NIC ports on the UCS server and assume should be configured as trunk/dot1q on the network switch.Is there anything to be done on UCS to configure as trunk port? Should the ports on the network switch be configured as trunk/dot1q & speed 1000full as best practice?
Thanks

- Too many Variables
Q. I need to install and bring up the UCS server remotely. If I configure the management IP through BIOS and connect the management port to the network, can I configure rest of the server remotely?
- yes that can be done using CIMC Web gui.
Q. I see four 1 GB NIC ports on the UCS server and assume should be configured as trunk/dot1q on the network switch.Is there anything to be done on UCS to configure as trunk port? Should the ports on the network switch be configured as trunk/dot1q & speed 1000full as best practice?
- It all depends on the co-resident Vms but I think trunk is the way to go.

  • Cisco UCS C220 MS SFF won't boot past BIOS screen with 2x1.2TB SAS drives installed

    We have been running a few of these servers with only a 500GB 6GB SATA 7.2K drive installed with all VM's (Hyper-V) sitting on an attached SAN.
    For various reasons we needed some local storage on the server and installed 2 1.2TB SAS drives (10K 2.5"). They hot installed okay but the server had to be brought down to enter the MegaRaid software to configure the RAID.
    Unfortunately  with the drives installed, the server won't boot past the initial BIOS screen and certainly doesn't get to the RAID screens.
    Does anybody have any idea why this would happen?  Is there some BIOS update required to support these drives and/or MegaRaid software upgrade?
    The servers are up and running at the moment so I can't find the version of the RAID software running.
    Thanks

    Hi Lauren,
    If you don't have a PCI or a mezzanine based controller and you are using the embedded raid controller you need a chip for the embedded raid controller to support SAS drives. By default the embedded controller only supports SATA drives. See page 9 of the link below
    Please let me know if you are not using the embedded controller

  • Cisco UCS C220 with VIC 1225

    Hello,
    We have Cisco UCS C220 M3 with VIC 1225 card installed. We connected only one 10G port of VIC 1225 to Nexus 5548UP switch. But I do not see this port on switch and in CIMI the status for this port shows Link Down. I wanted to to iSCSI boot from storage NetApp FAS2240 but since I don't see this port on my Nexus switch I am unable to do boot from NetApp. I tried both ports on VIC 1225 with same result. Please I need help in this matter. I know I am missing something very simple but can't figure this out.
    Thanks,
    Salman

    Hi Kenny,
    Here is the answers:
    -What slot is this card installed in?
    Mezzenine
    -How many CPUs does the server have installed? (1 OR 2 CPUs can make the difference)
    2x 2.90 GHz E5-2690/135W 8C/20MB Cache/DDR3 1600MHz
    -Is the PCIe slot enabled in BIOS? << Let us know if you don't know how to check it from CIMC
    I believe I did. Server>BIOS>BIOS advanced> PCIe (Let me know if this correct)
    -Have you confirmed that the cable is good?
    I have changed four cables. I am using SFP-H10GB-CU2M= Twinax cable.
    -If the switch does not even see the port and CIMC says it is down, have you confirmed the switch port is properly configured?
    CIMI says “Link Down” in VIC adapter General area. The switch interface config has only “switchport mode access” in default vlan 1.
    -What is the firmware running on the server and the OS?
    We upgraded the firmware with latest ucs-c220-huu-1.5.4-3.iso.
    Let me share with you the complete BoM of the server:

  • Basic question regarding c210 install

    Hello,
    I have installed UCS C series server and able to access CIMC. But, when I try to install ESXi vsphere, I am not able to launch virtual media from Virtual KVM console. On the console, I have this error message. Can anyone explain how to fix this issue?.
    PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    Thanks,
    Karthik.

    Karthik,
    Sound like you have a couple issues.
    1) Unable to launch virtual media - which sounds like you've resolved if you've launched the SCU utiility.  Please confirm if this is now working.
    2) Issue with RAID controller.  Can you detail which controller you have?
    If you're using the onboard LSI controller you have the BIOSO set correctly - "SWRAID".  If you're using an LSIMegaRAID controller, you'll need the BIOS setting for "Enhanced" SATA mode.

  • How To Install Software On To A New SSD ?

    Hi ,
    I Just wanted to asked before I jumped in with both feet
    What I have done so far:
    I downloaded and burned Win-7 Home Premium / SP1 - ISO , so I have a bootable disc.
    I`m not sure what order to install the drivers.
    And do I use my Norton product code to reactivate my Norton software ?
    Have MS-HO&S 2010 , but have not installed it yet ( waiting till the SSD is installed ).
    I have a "System Restore" USB Drive that I made , but I wanted to do a clean install.
    Thanks , later
    Gary

    Jedi;
    I installed a 240 gig SSD in my laptop and loaded the software from the USB thumb drive restoration I made when I first got the computer.    My Windows 7 score is 6.7, my hard drive score is 7.7.  Since you have a USB restore you can delete the 10+ gig partition that will be created to hold the data you have on your thumb drive.  Love my SSD.  Boot from power on to ready to input in a little over 30 seconds.  Good luck

  • UCS Design - Where to begin?

    Hello all,
    I recently was given a project to install UCS. It's new to me. We have purchased the following:
    - 2 2960 switches
    - 2 F5 Load Balancers
    - 2 6120 Fabric Interconnects
    - 2 MDS 9148's
    - 1 5108 Blade Chassis
    - EMC Storage (Celerra)
    I understand physically how to connect them all together, but is there some kind of best practice document that tells me things such as how many VSAN's, zones to create, or where to port-channel connections together? The customer is open to any new ideas, so if anyone has a good design or some quick pointers they'd like to share, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bobby Grewal

    Bobby,
    I have yet to see a comprehensive guide that contains all the information you're looking for.  There are guides posted on this community & CCO which discuss various topics regarding UCS.  When talking about Best Practices the best method may be to keep recommendations in small digestable chunks. Since no two DC environments are identical, one man's best practice, may be another's man's bottleneck .  Alot of your design considerations also depend on applications, expected load and infrastructure capabilities.  'll shed some advice on a few topics you can take into consideration for your design.
    Let's start from our blades and work our way up.
    Chassis Uplinks
    Assuming you have up to 8 blades in your single Chassis you'll need to first decide how many uplinks you want to use between your Chassis and Fabric Interconnects (FIs).  Supported configurations are 1, 2, or 4 uplinks which provide a max oversubscription of 2:1, 4:1 and 8:1.  Depending on your application bandwidth requirements you may be fine with 2 Uplinks per IOM.  Since you'll get the first 8 ports (6120) or 16 ports (6140) included with the base system, there's nothing stopping you from utilising all four.  People sometimes have reservations about oversubscription, but I can tell you a properly engineered system should be designed with overscription as part of the picture.  Keep in mind this connection a lossless 10G connection.  No TCP retransmissions or dropped frames, which make it much more efficient than standard ethernet.
    Fabric Interconnect Uplinks - Ethernet
    Here's where you will provide all the LAN connectivity for your UCS system into your distribution or core networking layer.  Again, the # of uplinks from each FI will depend on load, but most people start with at least 2 x 10G uplinks in a port channel to their upstream switches and add additional member interfaces as the links near saturation.  Without knowing what the upstream connecting switches your using (2960's or other) willl dictate how many and what toplogies you can take advantage of.  Example - If you had Nexus 5000 or Nexus 7000 switches upstream you could implement virtual port channels offering dual active links from each FI to each switch.  FI's act as your access layer switches, hopefully you have some distribution-level switches to connect into.
    Fabric Interconnect Uplinks - Fibre Channel
    As of the latest release of software (1.4.x) you can take advantage of SAN Port Channels and VSAN trunking.  Previously FC uplinks were treated individually, and allowed to carry only a single VSAN.  This new feature greatly increases the redudancy and efficiency of your SAN fabric being able to bundle 2 or 4 links towards your MDS core switches in a SAN port channel.  With the MDS 9148's support for 8GB FC, you can also minimize the amount of FC uplinks needed from your FI's assuming you have the six port 1/2/4/8 FC modules (Part ID N10-E0060) in your FIs.  If only the only option is 4GB FC due to cost or equipment you can use 2 or more FC uplinks to provide the necessary bandwidth. In terms of VSANs, I've seen two main designs.  One keeping a single VSAN on each Fabric Interconnect - with each FI uplinked to a single SAN Switch.  The other is creating both VSANs on each FI, with each FI uplinking to both SAN Switches.  Most people prefer to keep the SAN fabrics completely separate, but having the both VSANs exist on each FI ensures you maintain access to each fabric in the event a single FI should fail.  Zoning is another intersting topic.  Under legacy practices it was common to create a zone for each host.  This ensured maximum security for hosts & targets.  Since UCS allows us to pre-define WWN pools for quick deployments & provisioning, I see more & more customers implementing interface zoning. This allows you to zone the incoming FC interface coming from UCS with the designated storage targets.  The major advantage of this is once you configure this, you don't have to touch zoning to faciliate the deployment of any UCS hosts.  Drawback is that you now rely on the LUN masking to protect your data.  The management overhead required to deploy zones for each & every new host can be significant, so consider each benefit carefully.
    EMC Celerra NAS
    This is an interesting topic regarding 1.4 software capabilities.  If your EMC Celerra is going to be mainly for UCS access, you can direclty attach the NAS to the FI's.  This is a new feature called Direct Attach Storage. This allows you to connect a NAS such as the Celerra as an Appliance Port to the FI.  If the NAS is intended to server many other devices then you would be better off connecting it to your core network and allow UCS to access it via the uplinks.
    I'll update this thread as I have other suggetions.

    Robert

    Unless you have a tower case this won't work. It's a full-size card.  Your original post said you needed low-profile, and this is not such a card.  I assume you have a SFF case if you wanted a low-profile card.
    That's why I suggested the low-profile Sapphire R7-250, which is single-slot, low-profile, low-power, and still GDDR5 memory with a 72GB/s bandwidth.  Also, the retail carton contains BOTH (a) full-size bracket if you want to use this low-profile card in a full-size case, and (b) low-profile bracket if you want to use this low-profile card in a SFF case.  As I mentioned, there are three digital connectors: DVI, miniDP, and microHDMI, and the retail package also includes two adapters for those smaller connectors so you can use normal full-size DP and HDMI cables to connect to your monitor
    The earlier posted link (by Toruk-Makto) to a 250e is broken, so I don't know what that card that's describing.  But any low-profile R7-250e card I've found myself (e.g. this one from XFX) has two bad things going for it:
    (1) it's memory is DDR3 instead of DDR5, which right away sets its bandwidth to about 1/3 that of the Sapphire R7-250. You want DDR5 memory if you can get it.
    (2) it doesn't indicate that it comes with a low-profile bracket as well as a full-size bracket (as the Sapphire R7-250 does), so even though the card itself appears low-profile in size you won't be able to install it in a SFF case unless you have a low-profile bracket (as the Sapphire R7-250 does). Maybe it's just the writeup for the R7-250e which overlooked the second low-profile bracket also included, but the picture shown is with a full-size bracket.
    Note: the full-size bracket on the XFX R7-250e supports full-size DP and full-size HDMI as well as DVI.  The low-profile bracket on the Sapphire R7-250 supports mini-DP, micro-HDMI and DVI.  The retail carton also includes two adapter cables so that you can connect full-size DP and full-size HDMI cables, connecting them to the adapters.  Personally I would buy a separate straight-through cable with the proper desired connector at both ends, as I don't like adapters.  So for example I use a miniDP->DVI cable (from Monoprice) in one of my machines that has this card and two monitors, to connect to a second monitor which only has DVI, as I was already using the DVI connector on the card to go to my first monitor which also only has DVI.

  • Where should I put things on my new computer

    Since I've been running LR (currently 3.6) under Windows XP on a 6 year old HP desktop with an AMD dual core processer I just purchased a Dell XPS 8500 and plan to install LR 4.1 and move my catalogs and images to this new machine.
    The machine came with a 1 TB SATA || hard disk, and I've installed a 240 GB SATA III SSD and installed Windows 7 on it.  I currently have my images on an external 1.5 TB eSATA hard disk connected to the old computer, and expect to connect it to new computer the same way.
    Currently (in LR 3.6) I find I spend most of my time in the library module culling images and selecting a small number to develop.  I generate 100% previews for a shoot, and then switch between grid, loupe, and compare views, frequently zooming to 100% to check and compare critical focus.  Since I develop a much smaller number for photos, and typically do pretty minimal processing, don't spend as much time in the develop module.  Assuming that I'll do the same thing in LR 4.1, my top priority is library and performance, particularly when zoomed to 100%, and secondarily develop performance.
    My question is, to get the best performance, where (on  the SSD, internal hard disk, or external hard disk) should I
    install LR 4.1
    store my catalog(s)
    store the Camera Raw cache
    store my images

    hopefully the rest of the community responds with some of the specifics you are asking, but take a look at

  • Bash script workaround for intel backlight problems

    Hi all,
    I have LXDE with kernel 2.6.30, xf86-video-intel-newest (2.8 rc) on my Samsung NC10, and like many people I have been unable to change the backlight settings in X with kms turned on.
    I have tried the various solutions on the forum and none of them work for me, so here are two little bash scripts that use the setpci command to change the backlight.
    Note 1: I have a little file .backlight in my home dir that I store the backlight setting because I don't know how to read the value back from the pci address. So if you use this script you need to do this first:
    echo FF > ~/.backlight
    Note 2: These scripts also requre bc from extra to do the hex conversion & maths.
    sudo pacman -Sy bc
    It's only 240 K in size, but if you are trying to keep the number of installed packages low, then you won't like this
    Here is the package details from pacman:
    Name : bc
    Version : 1.06-5
    URL : None
    Licenses : GPL
    Groups : None
    Provides : None
    Depends On : readline
    Optional Deps : None
    Required By : None
    Conflicts With : bc-readline
    Replaces : bc-readline
    Installed Size : 240.00 K
    Packager : Allan McRae <[email protected]>
    Architecture : i686
    Build Date : Sat 02 Aug 2008 14:18:04 IST
    Install Date : Thu 25 Jun 2009 16:06:53 IST
    Install Reason : Explicitly installed
    Install Script : No
    Description : An arbitrary precision calculator language
    bc /usr/
    bc /usr/bin/
    bc /usr/bin/bc
    bc /usr/bin/dc
    bc /usr/share/
    bc /usr/share/info/
    bc /usr/share/info/bc.info
    bc /usr/share/info/dc.info
    bc /usr/share/man/
    bc /usr/share/man/man1/
    bc /usr/share/man/man1/bc.1.gz
    bc /usr/share/man/man1/dc.1.gz
    You also need to know the address of you graphics card:
    lspci | grep Display
    For me this returns:
    00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
    This is needed for this command in the scripts:
    sudo setpci -s 00:02.1 F4.B=$var3
    Note the 00:02.1 is the address for my laptop screen, 00:02.0 is the address for the vga out controller for me.
    Increase backlight:
    #!/bin/bash
    var1=`cat ~/.backlight`
    var2=`echo "16 i $var1 F + p"|dc`
    if (( ( "$var2" \> "-1") && ( "$var2" \< "256" ) ));
    then
    var3=`echo "10 i 16 o $var2 p"|dc`
    echo $var3 > ~/.backlight
    sudo setpci -s 00:02.1 F4.B=$var3
    fi
    Decrease backlight:
    #!/bin/bash
    var1=`cat ~/.backlight`
    var2=`echo "16 i $var1 F - p"|dc`
    if (( ( "$var2" \> "-1") && ( "$var2" \< "256" ) ));
    then
    var3=`echo "10 i 16 o $var2 p"|dc`
    echo $var3 > ~/.backlight
    sudo setpci -s 00:02.1 F4.B=$var3
    fi
    Obviously someone else can write a much smarter/better set of scripts than me, but I hope is can be of use for someone!
    Edit:Here are my openbox bindings for the scripts:
    <keybind key="XF86MonBrightnessUp">
    <action name="Execute">
    <command>~/bin/blightu.sh</command>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    <keybind key="XF86MonBrightnessDown">
    <action name="Execute">
    <command>~/bin/blightd.sh</command>
    </action>
    </keybind>

    FYI: The new xf86-video-intel (2.9) has just been released:
    http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.fre … xorg/40733
    According to the release announcement, the new driver fixes the backlight issue with KMS:
    * Add support for BACKLIGHT property when using kernel modesetting
      (KMS). This allows backlight adjustment with programs such as
      "xbacklight -set <percentage>" or "xrandr --set BACKLIGHT <value>".

  • Upgrade from Cisco 7.1 to 10.5

    Hello,
    We are planning an upgrade with a customer from Call Manager 7.1 to 10.5, to do this without impact i have a plan in mind. Could you guys check if this is correct, since we will be moving from a MCS to an UCS
    - Install UCS in staging Lab (prepare the esxi etc etc)
    - Do a backup of the current call manager (7.1)
    - Deploy the 7.1 call manager to the new UCS (ISO from cisco website)
    - Do a restore to have all the configuration on the staging Lab
    - In the staging lab perform the upgrade
    I would do this for Call Manager & also Unity, this shouldn't pose any problems?
    Kind Regards,
    Yannick Vranckx

    Hi ,
    You can use PCD for migrating from MCS to UCS.

  • SSD on 2011 Macbook Pro

    The 320GB HDD on my 2011 MBPro is full and i am almost sure i'm gonna install a 240 GB SSD on it. I intend to save all data on a external HDD.
    What I am concerned with is how do I get Mac OS to save all files to the external HDD by default?

    Thank you .. I apologise for the assumption that most understand that the OS and Programs should be riding on the SSD.
    Perhaps i should be more precise and state  that " What I am concerned with is how do I get Mac OS to save all DATA to the external HDD by default?"

  • Error to do upgrade with Prime Collaboration Deployment

    Hi all,
    We need do a upgrade from CUCM 8.0 to 10.0
    We are migratin with the Prime Collaboration Deployment, but when we add the Esxi host, an error appear.
    "Failed to mount Cisco Prime Collaboration Deployments export as NFS store to the ESXi Host"
    The UCS is a UCS 240.
    We can discover the cluster old, but don´t cant add the Esxi host.
    We deploy the new VM for the new CUCM 10.0
    Please, I need your help.
    Thanks
    Guillermo

    Most likely you don't have the right ESXi license for this, you need at least FND for PCD

    If you don't meet the ESXi license requirements, nothing to do here, either buy the necessary license, or don't use PCD.

  • Apps Taking Up Significantly More Space Than The Size of the App

    I'm having an issue where the meter for my iPad registers a significantly higher hard drive usage to "Apps" than the apps file size in the list. It's showing 5.4 GB, when the total size of the apps installed is 240 MB. I do have VLC and two videos synced totallying .5 GB. I also have Kindle with four books installed. Generously that's 10 MB.
    That's a 4 GB difference between what I can attribute and what iTunes says. Anyone have any ideas what could cause such a disparity?

    I know that some note apps still have your notes in the data files after they are deleted. Paper Desk never completely deletes a note. I can see deleted notes in the transfer section in iTunes. I wish they had a way of wiping those files clean. What I do is I delete the app and then re- install it after I save the notes I want to keep. I'm not happy with this problem. I'm sure other apps have the same problem.
