Installing, unistalling and decoding media files

hi,
i just got my mac and i don't know how to uninstall applications i have installed and i also have some movies i transfered from my windows pc to mac but they don't play, one more thing where can i get good and usefull apps ans an antivirus?
pls help

To uninstall applications, drag the application to the trash. There might be some other lingering files such as preferences or help, and those can be found doing a spotlight search using the application's name.
A good application that plays almost any media file is VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Antivirus isn't really all that useful on the Mac. There are no current Mac OS X viruses. If you want something to do an occasional virus scan, check out this program: http://www.clamxav.com/

  • Itunes, add and remove media files? Playlist and smart playlist

My problem is i have synced all my music into itunes and now i do not know how to delete them.
I only want media that i need in itunes. What i did was sync all my media files into itunes where this has created a mess for me.
I have duplicate media files, i downloaded a software to scan this and remove but that seemed to not work.
I have used  Consolidating option as well but doesn't seem to be working.
I have tried to organise itunes from genres, bpm rating etc. but they won't go in the playlist i assign them to.
I have create another itunes and started again but i am having problems using smart play list and playlist.
Is there a way to uninstall itunes, will all the media be copy onto my account?
Has i want to add the media as i go along putting them into different genres, groups etc?

Yes i do understand sorry just want to solve my problems. Hmmm maybe apple should get a live support going that would be handle for apple customer's.
I wrote this on another thread:
I came on this forum due to a apple assistant on the phone when i rang them for support about a few queries i had. I found that the apple representative to be quite rude with short answer questions and not giving me further resources for further understanding on my topics.
i hope in by be active on the apple community support forums, contribute to the community and others!

  • Utility or script "each clip = new movie and let media file = name"

I've found out that if I want to split a clip at the playhead and make it a new AS-IS original with a unique media file name designation; I have to go through:
file>export> as full quality movie > check the "selected clips only " box > copy and paste the name and then designate destination folder> CLICK and then wait until done. (Thank you Karl)
Unfortunately, completing this process with 180 clips per project x 15 to 20 projects per quarter... well it was more than I was prepared to do.
Therefore... is there anyone out there who could (or has already) program(ed) some kind of script/utility/add-on that would create a new AS-IS clip from each clip that was "split at the playhead" and ALSO, make those final clips as well as every other existing clip in the project have its media file designation the same as its name.
ie "each clip = new full quality movie and let its media file = name."
This would save me around 10 hours per week.

Karsten is correct. iMovie itself does not support AppleScript.
But for applications that don't support AppleScript, Apple offers a "System Events" AppleScripting alternative. It lets an AppleScript script use System Events to do things in OTHER applications. It can act on window objects, like click on a button. Theoretically, System Events can do just about any task in iMovie.
    Except, unfortunately, select a clip.
That's right, there is no way to select a clip with a script. So a script can't control which object to act on. YOU have to select the clip manually. That's not an insurmountable problem, but it does mean you can't tell the script to export every clip in the Timeline.
Probably the easiest way to do what you want is with QuicKeys, the third-party software that lets you define tasks, then assign a key to perform that task. Just about any task you can imagine. One kind of task is a macro to perform a series of actions. QuicKeys lets you record macros in any application. Its record function makes macro-writing pretty easy.
(QuicKeys is one of those utilities I wouldn't be without. I use QuicKey keys hundreds of times a day for repetitive tasks.)
Back to AppleScript. Theoretically, QuickTime Player Pro can do what you want. QuickTime Player is VERY scriptable.
Here's the trick: Each time we save the iMovie project, iMovie updates the "Timeline Movie.mov" that's inside the Cache folder (inside the project package). When iMovie saves, it sets the selected frames of that movie to match the selected clip in the TimeLine. When you open the "Timeline Movie.mov" in QuickTime Player, the selected video/audio matches the clip selected in iMovie.
So after you select a clip in iMovie, an AppleScript could save the iMovie project (to update the Timeline Movie), open the Timeline Movie in QuickTime, Copy the selected frames, Paste them into a new movie, then save the new movie.
Back to QuicKeys. QuicKeys can work across multiple applications just like an AppleScript. So theoretically you could run part of a macro in iMovie and another part in QuickTime Player. And, if I recall, QuicKeys can run AppleScript scripts.
What you REALLY want is an application that knows how to read iMovie project files and automatically exports each clip to its own movie.
Maybe I'm missing some simple work-around. That'd be sweeeeeet!
Yup. Sometimes the best solution is to avoid the problem, not solve it.
We can export a project to the camera, then re-import it to a new iMovie project. When we do, most clips on the Timeline return as discrete clips. Clips like titles will not be editable, of course.
That is best done early on, before we add titles, transitions and such. Import the newly-shot video, do a rough edit to get rid of the stuff you don't want, export the Timeline to the camera, re-import to a new project. All the junk will be gone and now each clip is a discrete clip with its own source file. NOW add titles and such.

  • What is the best way to install OSX and other computer files?

    Hi,
Long story short my Mac OSX got rewritten over with Windows XP so have to do a fresh install. So do I do the fresh install first and then transfer over all the stuff from my sister's computer to mine via Firewire?
You know when you first get a Mac it says do you want to transfer your files from another computer, well that is what I want to do since my sister's computer has a lot of what I used on my computer. So do I do a fresh install first and then is there an option to transfer over all her stuff after the fresh install? Or do I have to manually grab what I can off her computer?
Basically just want to know which comes first.
    S.

I think it's offered as an option at some point during the installation. But you can always start the Migration Assistant at any later point (it's located in Applications/Utilities) - that's the same application.
That's what I did, actually. I did a clean install first and only after everything was up and running did I hook up my old G4 and transferred things over with the help of the Migration Assitant.

  • Just Installed Leopard and all my files are GONE!

Yesterday I installed Leopard and now all of my files are gone. I don't remember being asked how I wanted to install it...but on www.apple.com/support, it said that there were options like "Erase and Install." I don't remember choosing that, but if I had, is there any way to restore my files or does it do a zero erase of the hard drive? I don't have anything backed up, so thus far, I have lost 3 term papers that I was in the middle of and don't have anywhere else... Can anyone help?

Even with minor OS patches and updates, I don't rely on "just do it" but verify and repair, backup, and only then apply updates (and lately, waiting a week first).
    Stop using that disk.
See if Data Rescue II demo can see anything or not (you should install 10.4.10 on another disk drive and work from there, guess you are now?)
Pre-existing errors that you weren't away of? If anything I've thought for a long time that installers should:
warn about and offer to backup
set a restore point in some manner
verify and repair the boot drive
( and this would be done in Single User Mode behind the back )
updates should be written to disk, but applied on restart, again in Single user mode
No weekly or monthly backup routine or schedule? no DVDs with your photos and papers? not in 3 yrs!!! kind of hard to understand you never heard of backups, or burned a DVD of documents for "safe keeping."

  • Backing up and restoring media files

Can anyone help me with the issue of seemingly not being able to backup my entire iphone (including photos, apps and music) and then restoring it all to a new iphone 4s?
I was contacted recently by my network provider to let me know I was elligible for an upgrade, which I accepted. They then sent me my new phone a day later, and I encountered the issue of what to do with everything on my 'now old' phone.
I spoke to my provider, and they advised me that to keep everything on my phone, all I would need to do would be to back-up my phone in itunes on my laptop, plug my new phone in and 'restore from back-up' - I made it perfectly clear that I had no media in my itunes, as I had been through a few different laptops since the time I originally bought my phone nearly two years ago. They made it perfectly clear that that wouldn't be an issue, and all media from my old phone would be backed-up to my computer, then restored to my new phone.
I have done exactly what I was advised to do, and alas, only my e-mails, contacts, messages and call log have been transferred to my new phone. Any help?
    Many thanks.

It should, but if it doesn't you can always transfer them manually.

  • Reader-8.1.1 and embedded media file

    Hi,
I cannot get embedded MPEG files running in the new Reader for Linux. I have RealPlayer 10.0.9 installed on my system and the `realplay' starting script is in PATH.
When I click on the movie, a message box opens saying:
Acrobat has encountered an error while playing this media clip:
Without telling the actual error. If I click a second time, the same box opens again, but a small black pop-up opens as well, showing a progress bar and the message `Initializing RealNetworks'. But nothing happens after that.
Do I need to configure something else?
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.
    Alexander

    Alexander,
I'm having a similar problem, but with a Flash file.
I've verified that I can play the file from the
command line and from my KDE Desktop (SUSE Linux 10.1),
and so I'm pretty sure that the player is working.
But when I generate a PDF using LaTeX and your movie15
    package AR8.1.1 redirects me to:
    http://www.adobe.com/special/acrobat/nomediaplayer.html
If I look at the attachments pane, the file is
    correctly identified as "application/x-shockwave-flash"
But under the filename, the phrase "Indeterminate" has
been added, which suggest that the something in the
annotation is not recognized (I'm using move15 2007/05/07).
Either that, or AR itself is broken.
I'm still in the process of dissecting the PDF to see
where the problem lies. But it would be helpful if
someone could post a url to an embedded media example
that is known to work with Linux AR8. That way I can
at least check that my setup is working, which will
    be hakf the battle won.
    Cheers,
    James

  • How can I search and sort media files to eliminate duplicates?

I have been downloading video files off of a SanDisk media card and I haven't been deleting old files off the media disk. Each time I download the files, I have been downloading a duplicate set of old files.
Is there a way to sort the duplicates so that I can delete them on my hard drive?

    Hi,
It should be caused that Windows Search is not installed on the second server. See following steps to install it:
    1) Start Server Manager
    2) Click on Roles in the left navigation pane
    3) Select Add Role in the Roles Summary pane to the right
    4) Select the File Services role and click Next
    5) Select the Windows Search role service and Finish the wizard.
Meanwhile, when you search for a file such as "data", input keyword data and click the Advanced Search at the bottom to result box. Then you can select "Data and modified" and "is after" December 1, 2010

  • Installed java and deleted the files---NOT ABLE TO INSTALL java AGAIN

    1) I installed jre,jdk1.6 and then without uninstalling i deleted the files.
    2) I now want to install java for creating web application.
But I am not able to install. While installing I get a "file corrupted" message and the installation aborts.
What can I do to install java again?

With the info provided the best advice I can give is reformat your drive and start fresh.
If that doesn't sound palatable, then you could maybe tell us at least what OS you are running and if you really want help the exact version of the OS.
Then you can tell us what you have already tried. Like running the uninstaller now, installing to a defernt directory, etc.
Also have you tried redownloading the JDK? Maybe the file really is corrupted.
And while file is it saying is corrupted.
Like everything else here, you need help, we don't need to help you, and we can't read minds. So if you are willing to put forth a tiny bit more effort to provide as much info as possible, you are more likely to get a meaningful response with a solution.

  • Blackberry pearl and curve media file transfer to and from macs

in order to transfer pics and mp3's back and forth from blackberry to the mac, you need to 1st install the latest version of pocket mac with the latest driver update for the macs on the rim website. once installed plug the blackberry via usb and check the blackberry for a message saying to enable mass storage. click yes on the blackberry and the macbook treats it as an external drive. open that drive and you'll see different media type folders and the micro sd card folder if you have one installed. at this point the transfer is simple, all you do is click, drag, and drop. viola! done that easy!!!!

I did everything you wrote below, but the BB never asked if it could be used as a mass storage device. The Mac didn't recognize the BB either. Do I need to have a micro SD card installed in the BB to make this work. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Sharepoint Foundation 2010 and Large Media Files?

I have already seen links giving instructions in how to raise the default 50MB upload limit to up to 2GB, but it doesn't seem like a good idea based on all the caveats and warnings about it.
If we need to occasionally allow access to external SharePoint users to files of size much larger than 50MB (software application installation files, audio recordings and video recordings) despite most documents being much less than 50MB (Office documents)
what is the best solution that does not involve using third party external services such as OneDrive, Azure or Dropbox because we must host all of our files on premises.
The SharePoint server is Internet accessible, but it requires AD authentication to log in and access files.
Some have recommended file server shares for the larger files, but the Internet users only have AD accounts that are used to access the SharePoint document libraries, but they do not have VPN that would be needed to access an internal file share.
I have heard of FTP and SFTP, but the users need something more user-friendly, doesn't require anything applications than their browser and that will use their existing AD credentials and we need to have auditing of who is uploading and downloading files.
Is there any other solution other than just raising the file limit to 1 or 2GB just for a handful of large files in a document library full of mostly sub 50MB files?

    I had a
previous post about performance impacts on the upload/download of large content on SharePoint.
Shredded storage has got little to do with this case, as it handles Office documents shared on SharePoint, being edited on Office client, and saving back only the differences, therefore, lightening up the throughput.
These huge files are not to be edited, they're uploaded once.
It's a shame to expose this SharePoint Farm on the extranet, just because of a handful of huge files.
Doesn't the company have a webserver on the DMZ hosting a extranet portal ? Can't that extranet portal feature a page that discovers those files intended to be downloaded from the outside, and then, act as a reverse proxy to stream them out ?
Or, it may be a chance to build a nice Portal site on SharePoint.

  • Time Capsule- Can i use it for Time Machine and store media files?

    Hi,
I'm very new to Time Capsule (have a 1TB TC), but have been using Time Machine to back up my MacBook Pro onto an external HD for a while now.
Here's my question. is it possible to use the Time Machine capabilities of Time Capsule while also using it to store music and picture files. Ideally I'd like to be able to have my iTunes and iPhoto library available on the Time Capsule. that way it could be centralized and readable from a few Macs in the house.
    Thanks!

    brianfallen wrote:
When you say the info on it won't be backed up. What do you mean "the info on it"? Do you just mean the mp3, AAC ...etc files aren't backed up because they live on the TC only?
I just want to make sure cause I did the same thing but I want to make sure I wont lose all my music and photos.
If the only place you have these music and photo files is on the TC HDD, then if the TC HDD fails, you lose all those files. Here's another option. TC has an archive feature. That means you can, via AirPort Utility -> Disks, use the Archive feature to clone the TC HDD onto a USB HDD attached to the USB port of TC. It's not like TM, making incremental backups. You have to manually archive it, but it is an alternative.
My photos remain on my iMac internal HDD. That means they are backed up by TM onto the TC HDD. If my iMac internal HDD fails, I still have the TM backups. I also backup yearly photos to DVDs. Photos are irreplaceble, you know.
