Installing updates on a Mac

When I got my new MBP a few days ago, one of the first things it did was try to install a large number of updates from the internet.
At the time, I refused since I was just getting to know the computer and didn't want to change things.
Now I have ordered the main software that I will run on it- FCP Studio 2 and CS3 Master Collection.
I know from Windows that sometimes intalling updates creates problems with instability or compatibility with installed software, so I was wondering two things:
Is it a good idea to allow the Mac to update whatever it wants?
Is it better to do the updates first and then install the new software or will it make no difference?
Thanks for any advice.

Thanks guys. I really do have a lot to learn about Macs.
Format and reinstall on my Win xp system is an all day thing and I only do it about once a year.
I wipe off the hard disk, reformat it with whatever partitions I want and then I have to reinstall each of the software beyond the operating system.
Lots of software now needs activation (Microsoft and Adobe are the ones I use most and they all need activation) and when you wipe off the hard drive all activation info disappears and you have to go through the process all over again.
Some companies don't recognize the activation if the software was recently activated and then there is the interminable hassle of calling and convincing someone that you are a legitimate user.
For this reason I have stopped reformatting and reloading software on a yearly basis. Right now, my old Dell laptop has gone for 3 years without any reformat and reinstall because doing so is such a huge pain. I got fed up and just put Windows on automatic everything and I let it do whatever it wants and so far it has behaved. I'm not too concerned because I built all of my PCs and I can fix anything Windows throws at me if it misbehaves. But I am a total novice on Macs.
It seems to me that installing software is going to be the same on a Mac because if I use MS Office or any Adobe products they all need activation.
I can't see reformatting and reinstalling everything on a regular basis under such conditions. It would drive me crazy and probably back to my Dell in frustration.
Is there a different way to do this on a Mac so that you don't have to go through this process each time?
Once I get all of the softwares I want loaded and working, could I ghost the system drive and use that to reinstall in the future in case of a serious problem?
Do Macs handle software installs differently than Windows? For example, in Windows, a software installs files to its own directory but also to many other directories in the OS itself. Do Macs keep an installation completely in the applications folder so that just the applications folder could be backed up and after a fresh install of OSX you just copy the applications folder contents back to the Mac hard drive?
I find it hard to believe that Mac owners are spending the better part of a day reformatting, reinstalling and reactivating (or trying to) all their software on a regular basis.
Thanks for all advice.

To check the local network for some of the common configuration problems, launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
That'll report some local configuration information and then either no errors detected and no changes required, or it'll point to whatever configuration errors or issues it might detect.  That doesn't catch everything, but it catches the common errors.
FWIW, 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are poor choices for the local network, as VPNs are based on IP routing and IP routing gets tangled when the same subnet is used on both ends of the VPN. 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are near ubiquitous in home networks and coffee shops.

They screwed up the first Flashback removal tool very badly, locking several users out of their accounts permanently. It took a day or so for them to react and post a revised tool, but the damage had been done.
They are one of several formerly PC only vendors who rushed to the Mac front back in the spring after the Flashback scare. I would advise giving all of those folks time to prove they really understand OS X before installing it on any of my Macs. There are several others who have proven themselves.
Since you are running what I assume to be a fully up-to-date OS X 10.6.8 you are not vulnerable to any currently known malware capable of impacting OS X or other Mac software. That's no guarantee there won't be something new show up tomorrow, but the chances of any commercial anti-malware software catching it before Apple can react is pretty slim, IMHO.
Now if you are concerned about Windows malware, that's a different story.

For anyone that comes across this. I managed to fix the problem. It had something to do with the date on my computer. Mavericks installer apparently does a date check of some sort and that is where the error is coming from. Open terminal and check the system date. It may be wrong. Another poster in the forums told me how to to check the date and change it. Click here for the link to the explanation. Be careful because the date is in a weird format.

Please help, I don't want lost my important data, give me a solution for restore them!!!!
We'll need more information to help, but first and most important, do you have any backups? If not, there's a chance that your data could be gone for good. You need to be prepared for that possibility. However, before panicking, give us more information so we can give you the greatest chance of recovery possible. And don't do anything else with your computer until you have a plan for how to proceed.

Boot from that install disc, run Disk First Aid and repair your permissions.

  • I can't install updates from the App Store

I got my mother's old mac book pro and have encountered a problem I do not know how to fix. I can sign into my iTunes and the App Store just fine, but when I go to install updates to my mac it asks me to sign in again but it has my old email there for sign in and I can not change it. How can I fix this problem?
I have tried resetting everything to default and I have even removed all other saved emails for sign in, but still encounter this problem.

You need to delete and redownload the applications you’re trying to update; the old Apple ID is stored inside them.

Try deleting all your music by going into settings>general>usage>music. Then re-download them from iTunes by going in to iTunes on your iPhone>more>purchased>music.

In the details it is mentioned that it is an outdated version of Java.
Is this a security risk that i need to live with to get CS5 to run with Yosemite?
Also i need to reject messages from Java in the future about updates, or not?

Hello everybody, good news: after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.5 I've been able to run the installer and all went fine.
Mountain Lion allows user to force execution through the context-menu (CTRL-click) Open command and it does work, just that simple.
So my advice is: if you want to install or re-install Flash Builder 4.6 on a Mac with Lion installed, upgrade to Mountain Lion or better to avoid problems.
Apple introduced some (not all) Gatekeeper functionalities in 10.7.3 and following, but apparently you need a full-fledged 10.8 to have also what you need to circumvent a Revoked Certificate error.
Since usually OS X has auto updating active, if you are running Lion you end up with 10.7.5 and won't install FB46. If you manage somehow to hold 10.7.2 I suppose you should be able to install FB46, sincerely I didn't check it out. Anyway it's simpler and safer to move on to 10.8.x.
    Bye
