Installing/Using Tiger with Classic

Hello:
I would like to know how to install Tiger and still keep Classic on my iMac. I currently have 35.55 GB available.
I would also like to know how to use Tiger & Classic together
(switch back & forth) on the same iMac.
Thank you.

Hi Steve,
you just install Tiger alongside OS 9 and can choose between these through the "startup volume" preference pane.
1. You will have to exchange the Tiger install DVD for CDs unless you upgraded your iMac with a DVD-drive already: Media Exchange Program
2. Insert the install CD and reboot while holding down the c-key.
3. After the installer has started and you selected your language, go to the menu and open "Disk utility". Once there select "Repair OS 9 permissions" from the menu.
4. Repair the disk
5. Quit disk utility and proceed with a normal install
6. After the restart Repair permissions!
7. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.4.8 Combo PPC
8. Repair permissions before and after an update!
9. Run software update from the Apple menu and apply all remaining updates.
Good luck!

  • How do I do a Clean install of Tiger and Classic?

My G4 came with Jaguar. OS 9 was part of the complete installation, that you could install or choose not to install. My computer has been having a lot of issues lately and I think that a clean install would be a good idea, especially, since I used an upgrade to install Panther and then installed Tiger on top of Panther. I want to install classic and Tiger. How do I do this properly? Thanks

I plan to back up my personal files and any
    downloaded software I have.
Amazing that. You've told us that numerous times, but
you've failed to provide us with information on
HOW you're going to do this. That is, please
explain WHAT you're using for the backup and
WHERE you're planning on using to store the
    backup.
All Power Macs come with the capability of burning CD's today. Mine can also burn DVD's, so backing up MY files is NOT a problem. I just can't clone my whole drive. Now, I'm not sure how this is pertinent in answering my question about how to properly do a clean install of Tiger and be able to install Classic. My son however, just told me he thinks that all I need to do is to clean-install Tiger. Then, insert the installation CD with classic on it that came with my computer. Find the invisible file, which is a disk image and drag the contents of the disk image to my computer. If anyone can tell me if this is correct, I would appreciate it.

  • Who is using TIger with GB 2.02

just wondering since i bought it 2 months ago tried it and saw problems
took it off and now still wondering.
Who is using GB 2.02 successfully so far without problems
    and OS 10.4.2?
SHould i reinstall it at this time
    I dont see a 10.4.3 ?????

I've never had a problem and as you can see, I have a similar machine. There may have been some problems with 10.4.1, but the 10.4.2 update fixed things. That was some time ago it seems. Yup, mine's been working fine. Hoping to buy the new personus inspire interface (firewire), but waiting till I get a bit more feedback from my posting below. It looks like a good interface to get.

  • Using EventListeners with classic Text objects

I have created 4 classic text objects and called them Butt1 thru Butt4.
This is so I can change the text in code from time to time.
I want to create an event listener to pick up when the user
    a) mouses over Butt1, etc.
    b) mouses out of Butt1, etc.
    c) clicks on Butt1, etc.
In each case I will define a function to perform actions when the
button is moused over, moused out or clicked.
AddEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, clickHandler);  does not seem to have parameters(as far as I can tell)
    to point to Butt1, etc.
    How is this done?
Probably an elementary issue, but befuddles me.
    Thanks for help.

    Excellent!
    camelCase check!
But how do I get access to features like text color, font size, etc.
The Code Hints don't include anything like that.
    When I try
    Butt1.text_color = #AAEEFF;
    or
    Butt1.color = #AAEEFF;
    I get an error:
I'm just guessing at what the name should be but What Flash/Action Script really needs
is some way to see what methods are available for classic text fields.
I'm sure Flash has this feature but how do I get it.
    Thanks

  • Using Shuffle for classical music

Am a new IPOD user and am looking for guidance on how to use "shuffle" with classical music .. specifically am looking for a way to have multiple tracks that make up one piece of music be treated as a "song" .. it would appear from what I have seen that shuffle will play a movement of a piece only (plays one track) .. Album is an option but would like a finer granularity if possible .. all suggestions appreciated

Thank you for resonding.  We were told at Best Buy all we would need is GarageBand.  So - I appreciate your honesty that this appears to be not what we need.
The situation is as follows.  My husband will teach in Aspen, CO this summer to Elderhostel people.  Back in the days of drop the needle this was easy.   But now - everything is digital.  And, so he has been downloading music to ITunes.  He wants to go to a section of a piece of music (say - within the 2nd movement and play where the "horns" come in.  And, then go to another section within the 2nd movement to show the change in tempo and "feeling".  And, be able to play that.  And, he can't take the time of "fast forwarding" and hoping he stops at the right place.   Once he has set these up - probably  40 to 50 start and stops for 6 lectures - then he would transfer everything over to IPAD.
We will purchase one -as we have wanted something small and portiable which has wifi.So we can access our emails and the WWW.
Does any of this make sense now?  Is there  MAC AP which would do what we are looking for.   This is what Best Buy kid said we/he could do.
I do appreciate your respondingto me.
    Thanks,
    Ann

  • I am using Tiger, 10.4.11, and have an iPod classic 120gb working fine.  Just got a 160gb classic and would like to sync it to same i-Tunes file.  It said "must have iTunes 9.0 or later to sync."  If upgrade i-Tunes to 9.0.2, will my 120gb iPod sync o.k?

I am using Tiger, 10.4.11 and have an iPod classic 120 gb working fine with about 7 gb of music on it.  I just got another iPod classic 160 gb for my wife, and would like to sync it to the same iTunes file, but I got a message which says I must upgrade to iTunes 9.0 or later.  If I upgrade to 9.0, will my 120 gb iPod be o.k. with that?  Rumor:  I have heard that iTunes 9.0 or later changes the format of the music.

Thanks to all for reviewing my question.  I am trying to avoid a possible disaster here, having to load about 90 cd's all over again.  If anyone knows, could you tell me what will happen if I download iTunes 9.0, and install it.  Will it copy all of my music into it, or fail to recognize it, or recognize 8.0 and just upgrade rather than replace it?  Thanks again.  Tom

  • Using Tiger 10.4.7 with AD 2003 and problems with rq'd Password Change

I have been able to successfully change my password 4-5 times before in my scenario using Tiger v-.2->.6 and have never had a problems.
Now I just changed my old expired password, as req'd from the AD policy, to my new Password on my XP box and have a Mobile account on my Powerbook that won't let me in now using my new Password. It says I am unable to use this <name> account at this time. Is there a propogation time to pass?
Local Admin account on PB can sign in fine- My alternate Systems Admin account <mobile> can sign in as well fine. Other local accounts work well as well.
As a mobile account I cannot change my password without being connected to the AD network at this point (no access through local System Prefs). Has anyone ever experienced this? Or is everyone still shying away from Mobile accounts usage and Homesync (Works great on my machine - problems with other accounts/computers)- I'm sort of a Mac/AD Daredevil here in XP-land, since we only really support Macs because our CEO won't (refuses to) use XP and I am a Jedi Knight inside the Dark Star (Just learning XP/AD to get steady work).
Anyone out there have anything to add/suggest? THX

The admonition not to use the Tiger install disk utility only applies to repairing permissions. You can use Disk Utility from the install disk for verifying and repairing your hard drives. However, with Tiger, you can now verify your boot drive with Disk Utility from your boot drive itself (this only works if you have disk journaling turned on and it's on by default). If the drive would need any repairs then you would have to boot from the installation disk to repair it.
Disk Warrior is probably the best hard drive maintenance utility in the entire Macintosh universe and it works fine with Tiger. Just make sure you have the latest version which is 3.0.3 I believe.
In my opinion the iLife suite of programs is absolutely essential for the complete Macintosh/OS X experience. There's nothing like it on any other platform, period. It's a true work of excellence.
You will enjoy the stability and compatibility of Tiger especially when on the Internet. The latest version of Safari is the best yet.

I have a power mac G3, B&W, 400 Ghz. 1gHz mem. I have installed OS 10, It says I may install OS 9.1 later. I have 9.1 installation and restore disk at my disposal. Which do I use and  how can I install updated firmware before installation? I have tried ti install OS 9.1 but I keep getting the error messege "my firmware is out of date". What am I doing wrong. Please help me!

Technically it can't without a special software known as LeopardAssist.
    The firmware required is here:
Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) Firmware Update 1.1
Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) with SCSI (I could not find, remove any SCSI card before using Tiger or Leopard)
The installer disk must look like:
    http://www.thebookyard.com/images/OSX9DISK.jpg
And not say Upgrade, Dropin, a Mac model, or OEM.  Once you have 9, you can get 9.0.4, 9.1, and 9.2.2 updates through the iinet link mentioned earlier.
Firmware updates and other OS 9 updates are on the following links for reference, but the iinet is where the downloads are still available.

  • Still Using Tiger, Was getting Ready to Install Leopard..

    Hello-
I am still using Tiger but was getting ready to purchase Leopard, get the Missing Manual for Leopard and then Snow Leopard came out. So, I am getting a new MacBook Pro and that comes or is already installed with Snow Leopard. I was going to order one of David Pogue Manuals: Snow Leopard: The Missing Manual, or another one when someone changes, I think, from a Windowez-based OS to Snow Leopard OS X.
After thinking about it, I am wondering should I be getting both or for now just the Leopard Missing Manual rather then Snow Leopard: The Missing Manual. Is Snow Leopard like Leopard? Do you think I would be better off knowing or having a reference available for Leopard and trying to use The Leopard Manual initially rather then the snow Leopard. From what I have read, it sounds like Snow Leopard is almost like a major Leopard update, but I could be wrong.
I am not sure. I don't want to be (again) like the lost guy because I skipped a step. Also, there are a lot of manuals out on these topics but David P's is still not out (as far as I know). Would anybody recommend one of the other manuals that are out?
Thanks for your help. For somebody like me learning this stuff is hard. It does not come naturally so I am looking forward to having a good resource like these Missing Manuals available.

Neville- (I hope you can read both sections because I am curious to know if you are familiar wit what I am trying to describe in the second paragraph.)
I am not sure I can accurately explain why I have not done these, but I did do something like this and I had the applecare lady on the phone so I knew she could help me if I messed up. It was something very similar but there were 2 options to repair (choose repair I should say). One said it was very short in length and the other was very long. I do not remember holding down the "C" key but I might have held down the command or some other key. Also I did not get the chance to go any further because I did not pick the short method, I chose the long one and I had to run. The applecare lady was actually not on the phone the whole time she gave me her extension to reach her if I needed to. I thought that was nice.
When I got the MBP about 3 years ago, I was going to do some fixing and I called applecare. They told me (and her is where I am not sure of my facts) that the TechTool should not be used for some reason. They told me to go to the apple support page, get a DVD that allows you to "write" and find the latest DeluxeTechTool (which apparently did not come with my machine because it had not been out yet). Once I copy the Tool from the site to the DVD, I then use that and insert it before I boot up and the rest I forget.
Do you know anything about this? I remember going to the area she said and seeing the ability to download and copy the newer DeluxeTechTool but I did not do it because at Best Buy I could not find anybody who knew the kind of DVD I would need nor what the ones they did have were for.
I do need this info. too because I have never backed up the machine. If I get a new one I want to get into the habit of backing up all the time, but I will have to learn to. If you know of where a good place is on the web that describes what the R, RW, C, CR, etc. mean for the DVDs and CDs. Even at Costco every worker in electronics did not know the answer to that question.
Some I would need to just burn or copy one thing onto either the CD or the DVD like that DeluxeTechTool and some I would want to keep copying or burning multiple times. And then even some I would like to be able to burn songs on them and transfer them to my iTunes and use that same CD or DVD for a movie to be able to do it over and over again. (Unless the quality goes down with each copy and overwrite I do.)
thanks for your help with the "repair procedure" but I could tell there are some things left out that I would not know what to do. I know now because of what I recently did by the "Apple self test" or whatever it was called I did. Questions I would have would be; when you say insert the original software DVD, I would need to know when do I insert and I think I have 2 CDs that came with the machine. Is there one that says "software" and the other says "hard drive?"
When you say C key are you talking about the key with only the "C" on it?
If I repair permissions all the time by using disk utility while the notebook is on, why dos it say it repaired so many (I forge the word it used) but it will then give what it repaired. It will say things like ro-ororro-o should have been ro-ro- . Things like that.
My final question is, somebody told me if I hold down the shift key and restart the computer and keep holding the shift key until the turning wheel stops and it says "Safe Mode." They told me doing this is the same as repairing the permissions by the more complex way. it is interesting because it does create some a long what appears to be either a file name or something like when you start disk utility just by using the utility.app on my dock, once you start that up and get ready to use it there are 2 long (I am not even sure what to call them) but one has Media in it and then the long list of letters and I think numbers and one just has the long list of letters/or numbers. It is here that I never understood which one is my hard drive and which one to select or repair the permissions. The example is terrible because the picture in the Help page shows a list that is about double the length of mine and is very hard to know which list to pick to be repaired. Also when they say pick your hard drive, I have no idea which one is my hard drive. It does not say "hard drive" next to the numeric code but I think one is left aligned and the other is aligned center or something like that. Also, one code I think has "Media" next to the numeric name.
Thanks for listening to this. I doubt it makes much sense but maybe with you seeming like an expert in Macs, you might be able to figure out what I am trying to say.
    Peace

  • Help! Purchased used MBP with admin password, want to install OSX Leopard!

I purchased a used MBP with Tiger. The seller sold me a laptop with a password! I can log into the computer but I can't install programs (it asks for the password).
I don't have the original Tiger disks.
*If I purchase OSX Leopard tomorrow at the Apple Store, will I be able to install Leopard? Will it ask me for the password? Is there ANYWAY to get around this?*
*Do I have to buy a completely new hard drive to install to?* If I do I'll be really upset. I thought this was a good deal but I guess not if I have to pay for all this...

The machine is set to use "automatic login" that is why it does not require a password on boot up.
Boot from the Tiger Install DVD and choose Reset Password under the drop down menu on the top menu bar. You did get the OS disks with the machine, correct?
It will search the machine for all admin accounts and you can choose which one you want to reset.
And FYI, you always need the password of an admin account to install software. It is one of the safety features of OS X.
Installing 10.5 (Leopard) is your choice but it is not required to get you out of this jam if you have the 10.4 (Tiger) DVD. But you will need to boot from the 10.5 DVD and then decide what kind of install you want to do. If it was me, I would erase and install and start clean with legal software and applications.

  • How to use Tiger Bootcamp XP partition with Leopard

I had a Boot Camp partition installed under Tiger, which worked without any problems. Now I did a clean install with Leopard and ask myself how I can use the XP Boot Camp from Tiger?
Do I have to reinstall Boot Camp & XP? Or can I just boot it and use it with Parallels / VMWare as I did with the Tiger version?

  • Still using Tiger 10.4.11, with Parallels 2.0 (build 3214)...

    Hi, All:
I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet - I'm still using Tiger (10.4.11) with Parallels 2.0 (build 3214) so that I can run Windows XP (so that I can use Quicken for Windows).
I'd like to upgrade to Leopard, but I am reticent to do so because of having Windows XP on-board. Quicken is essential, and everything works fine together, at present.
Any suggestions on the most painless way to upgrade to Leopard? How hard is it to reinstall Windows afterward (and should I do so via BootCamp or should I buy a new copy of Parallels [or the other VM brand]?). What about keeping all the Mac software I already have on my MacBook (MS Office 2004, Adium, HandBrake, Carbon Copy Cloner, CleanApp, SuperDuper, etc.).
Sorry if this has been asked a jillion times before...
    Bill in CT

There is no reason why you'd lose your XP installation. Your XP virtual drive should be located in your Documents folder.
By default the installation CD will just upgrade your current OS. Since parallels is installed as an application and some info in your user space this won't be effected.
Alternately when you upgrade you have three options.
    1) Upgrade (this is the default and will just install your new OS overtop the old but keep all your old applications and user settings and home directory).
    2) Archive and install (this will archive your user directory and then install a new system you'll have to move all you user files into a new user directory).
    3) Erase and install. (you will lose everything since this erases your drive don't select this option)
