Installing Win7 from existing WinXP

Hey guys.
Run into a problem. Got an install for windows 7 as an ISO file from my University for free via download. I thought since mac doesn't run ISOs ill install my previous XP I had on my PC (before upgrading to Win7 on it) and then Migrate to Win7..
so
Snow Leopard --Bootcamp--> XP Media Center 2005 (Via DVD) --Mounting ISO--> 64bit Windows 7
But it says "Failed to run, as this is not a valid win32 application" or something similar... Not sure if you guys could help me at this part here... but the real question....
Can boot camp run an ISO or must I need to burn to a DVD first?
Any other info would be appreciated..
Thanks in Advance!

Not true. OSX Disk Utility can handle iso-files quite well.
Snow Leopard --Bootcamp--> XP Media Center 2005 (Via DVD) --Mounting ISO--> 64bit Windows 7

No, BootCamp needs an installation CD/DVD to boot from.
Like said OSX Disk Utility can handle and burn iso-files to CD/DVD quite well.
But for best results you should reduce the burn speed to something like 2X or even lower.
Windows 7 discs burned at higher speeds tend to be not useable.
Hope it helps

  • 2011 MBP MC700 13" cann't install win7 from  an external usb CD/DVD ROM

    My new 2011 MBP MC700 13" cann't install win7 from an external usb CD/DVD ROM,WHY?

Yes, very annoying. Not unworkable though. We've a bucket load of different external devices too, tried all of them.
It's not common to one OS either - can't boot OSX DVD, Ubuntu, Win7.... Only way I can is via the internal SuperDrive when it's actually internal.
Even tried it with just 1 x Hard Disk & an External USB. No joy.
Obviously not annoying enough for me to try and find a solution I just work around it now. Interesting it's been the same on my last three MBPs though - no problem on both the Air's I've owned.

  • Installing Win7 from unallocated partitions in HDD

I've have had my GS560 laptop for about 10 days and have been trying to 'personalise' it - mainly to have 'My documents'
(or its Win7 equivalent) to operate from the 'D'drive. Foolishly I did not make a recovery disk at this stage. The result now is that the 'Desktop' is also located on the 'D' drive and that's not what I want.
Since I did not get a copy of Win7 OS on discs, then I am led to believe that the Win7 is on two unallocated partitions on HDD.
Is this so ?   and if so, can a 'luddite' like me reinstall Win7 and start all over again?
There is no data on the laptop yet.
    Can anybody help?

    Yes, I think so.
Any way to re-trace your steps, and put it back
on C? May make things worse!
Win 7 does not have the same file layout
as XP for instance. Documents folder is just a "link" to
the real one, which is at C:\Users\Username\Documents.
Not sure how to help fix it from here, as I can't imagine what
    you did.

  • Can't install WIN7 with an external USB DVD

    Hi,
Read all posts regarding the install of WIN7. Still none actually worked for me.
    1. Details: MacMini late 2009, OS X Mavericks, unusable Apple SuperDrive, external Asus DVD on USB. Stick with drivers for WIN7, created by downloading them from Apple website as BootCamp refuses to create it. WIN7 DVD.
    2. Steps I did:
    a. I tried using BootCamp. First issues, BootCamp refuses to create the USB with support for WIN7. After hours of searching on forums, I did it myself by downloading an archive from Apple.
    b. I tried then just to install WIN7. BootCamp cannot see the DVD. Of course I used external DVD since the SuperDrive is not reading any DVD/CD.
    c. Looking on YouTube, I tried a different approach. I created a partition for WIN in DiskUtility, started Mac and pressing ALT. Unfortunatelly the external DVD was not seen, so I could not acces WIN setup files.
    d. Found a crazy solution (too crazy to try it) in which I had to add some lines in some OS file: such as MacMini Model Indetifier and BOOT ROM version. It supposed to let my MacMini to install WIN7 from an external DVD. Here is the website for those that have courage to do it:
    http://mihail.stoynov.com/2013/04/22/force-boot-camp-into-using-an-iso-image-of- windows-to-create-the-usb-flash-drive-for-mountain-lion-with-updated-boot-camp/
    3. It worked on OS X 10.8. I installled WIN7 from that external DVD by using BootCamp without any trouble. Worked like charm.
    4. Why I need WIN7. To run FrameMaker10 and CorelDraw X6. I need them in my work.
I would really appreciate any valuable input. I really need to install WIN7 by the end of this week.
    Thank you.

Mac OS X will only boot PowerPCs with Firewire, not with USB. That's the reason it doesn't work.

  • How to clean install Win7

I would like to have a clean install Win7 to my thinkpad with original vista pre-installed.
I do not want to erase the F11 recovery function, that is keeping drive Q and S.
However, if I install win7 from the installation disc, the MBR will be erased.
    Please give me some advice.

Unfortunately, with a clean install you will be reformatting the drive I assume, partitioning it and installing the OS. In this process you will loose the recovery drive. What you can do is back up SWTools, and the Recovery Partition to another source, and recreate the Recovery Partition once you have finished doing your clean install. The support article ishaan has pointed to is an excellent resource, which will also give you an indication of what folders to back up.
Edit: with some further research, you may be able to just delete the partition with the OS on it, repartition, and perform a clean install, on the new partition. I would still take all means to back up. Microsoft has an article here that may be of some assistance.
Good Luck, and keep us posted on your progress. Thank You.

  • Installing win7 on imac 27" mid 2011 model - sloow

i am trying to install win7 x64 ultimate edition in bootcamp on my latest imac mid 2011 i7, 3.4ghz, 12gb ram. I have created the bootcamp partition and i have the win7 installation disc. Once the computer restarts to begin setup of win7, the speed is rediculously slow, and i mean slow. it would literraly take about 5 hrs alltogether to install the windows7, and in between the screens, it usually takes about 10 minutes for each screen to appear, plus mouse is not responsive for about 5 minutes before the next step is completed. i have first tried to install win7 from snow leopard via bootcamp (installation of windows was slow). i upgraded to lion OS, and the same problem is consistant, redicously slow instalation. Even if thw win7 installs successfully (after like 5 hours), its not operational at all. i am unable to install the drivers once the win7 installation fully completes, because of its no response to any commands
I have performed the installation of bootcamp win7 a week earlier on my MBA (latest edition), same win7 disk via USB drive without any problems and it runs smooth. the same is not the case installing on imac 27". Any ideas?

You probably left out something signifiant. Like your iMac is configured with....SSD?
3rd party memory might be an issue.
Both have been known to be factors. Some Apple (Toshiba) SSDs are very slow, some seem not to be supported or have issues. The SATA 3 6G cable interface for one.
Do you have an SSD plus 2TB hard drive?

    Hi,
There is a Boot Camp (it's Boot Camp not bootcamp) forum, I'd recommend re-posting there. Also if you haven't seen it here is the Installation and Setup Guide for Boot Camp.

  • Installing Win7 and creating 3 partitions (  the recovery one)

    Hello Mac World !
I`m the new guy Apple had convinced to switch to a MBA instead of another PC ! But yet, I need my win7 also and this is what brings me to this post!
I just bought a MBA, which comes with Lion preinstalled, so I`m fine with that, quite eager actual...! Now, I`ve read a lot of discussions/forums regarding the installation of win7 and it looks pretty clear until creating the partitions.
From what I`ve learned, the max of partitions is 4 and deleting the recovery one is kind of mandatory and I`m not really cool with that, since I have no other way to restore Lion. I always had 3 partitions in my PCs (c = win, d+e = storage) and I would like to mantain it that way, on my Air if possible. If not, I`ll make a compromise, as having 2 partitions for each O.S and a shared one (data storage) for both of them.
Can someone please walk me trough the process? Will MBA recognise an external dvd in order to install win7 from a dvd? The boot camp drivers should be used after win7 installation is completed, or before that?
I thank anyone who is taking the time & trouble to guide a new be in the Mac World ! I really appreciate it !

A stand alone external USB DVD/CD drive will work fine for installing Windows 7.  I bought one on ebay for about $25.  The Apple SuperDrive runs $79.  You didn't mention which MBA you got.  I hope it has at least the 128GB SSD.  I have the 11" 128GB drive that I bought 2 months ago.
I'm running Windows 7 via Parallels 7.  Very slick program that allows easy and quick switching between the systems.  While I can't be sure, I'm under the impression that with Parallels, you don't have to set a hard  partition and it uses whether recourses it needs from the entire hard drive.
With Windows 7, Parallels7 and MS Office '07, I still had about 90GB free. After I've added some music and videos, I still have 70GB free.  While I have haven't had to use it yet, I also have a 500 GB USB Passport  external hard drive.
After my installation, everything worked correctly from day one including the Internet both within Win7 and within OS-X.
I have a iMac also that I'm basically running the same programs on. However, it uses Bootcamp instead.  That works fine also, but it's a bit of a PITA to switch back and forth as that requires a complete reboot.
My ONLY reason for Windows is MS Office, Quicken and  MS Streets and Trips.  Other than these programs, I run my MBA in OS-X most of the time.  Others here, maybe even most would question my opinion that Windows 7 is just as good or close to OS-X.
I think if you wanted to try Parallels, you can get a free 30 tryout and if it doesn't work, blow it off.
My wife has a Mac Mini that we first went the BootCamp route along with Windows 7.  Later she got Parallels and installed it.  It automatically recognized the BootCamp Windows 7 installation and now she can go either way.   She can boot directly to either Windows 7 or OS-X.  Once in OS-X, she can fire up Parallels and then switch back and forth.  I personally think it's a smoother operation going straight Parallels.

When Creative Cloud updated a few days ago (Win7) it reported I had no installed apps.
In Lightroom I keep getting messages that a new version is available. Installed it from CC and it installed without error, CC shows I installed it, but it simply fails to run.
How do I get CC to find apps installed under the previous version?
And how do I get Lightroom CC to run?
    Peter

I still don't know how to get CC to find that I have Photoshop CC installed, but running Creative Cloud, going to Preferences and signing out, then signing in again got Lightroom CC to work.
Since Photoshop CC is still working despite apparently not being installed things are now OK, at least for the moment. But I'm not feeling at all happy with Adobe.

  • HT5639 Can I install Win7 32-bit from a bootable USB-Stick on iMac using Boot Camp?

I would like to run Win7 32-bit on my iMac 8,1.
    I have a bootable USB-Stick to install Win7.
Does Boot Camp support the installation from USB-Stick?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can only install Windows from a USB drive in one of these Macs:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - MacBook Air.
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
    - iMac (Late 2012).
As you don't have any of those Macs, you have to install Windows through a DVD. Also, the only iMac that can install Windows using a USB drive only supports a 64-bit Windows 7 and 8 version with Boot Camp

  • SCCM 2012 R2 OSD Win7, a Reference Image or Install.wim from the Win 7 media

I want to use thin image to deploy win7.
So do I need to built a reference Image, or I can use install.wim from Windows 7 media directly?
I saw someone suggest built a reference Image fist. so what different between  builting a reference Image or using install.wim from Win7 media?

    Hi,
When you build your won reference image you can include your own software and Software Updates which makes it a lot faster to deploy. I normally add:
    - Windows 7 hotfixes that are not delivered through WSUS/Microsoft Update
    - Visual Studio Runtimes 2005,2008,2010,2012
    - .NET framework 4.5
    - And all the latest software updates from Microsoft.
So I recommend that you create your own image.

Acrobat X1, Purchased upgrade, failed as no valid product to upgrade from existed (my mistake but want my money back!). So purchased Acobat X1 std, install seemed OK, but does not work as I continue to get the upgrade screen saying no valid product to upgrade from? So now I have spent lots $$ and nothing working. Why is this so complicated? what do I need to do?

    Hi Rave,
Thanks for this; my issue is that I have now supposedly purchased a retail version of Acrobat X1 (i.e just spent more $$, after the upgrade attempt  to Acrobat X1 failed), and while this feigns an OK install, it fails in someway to override the "Upgrade Acrobat X1 version".  E.G. once I load up to read an acrobat file the "upgrade version" executes/intercepts and ask for serial numbers and check for a previous qualifying version which I do not have, (BUT what I do have is the current retail version of acrobat X1 which is not recognised)
Do I need to uninstall and start over again? (I am reluctant to do this as I am sure serial number issues will arise, as I assume downloaded file will be cleaned up etc, and I am not spending more money trying again!)
    Any suggestions?

Wait, I'm a little confused. On my day old iMac running Mavericks, do I install iDVD from my iLife 11 disk, or somehow copy the app from my existing iMac and install it on my new one?

The following may be a bit easier set up the new Mac with the same iDVD capability on your old Mac:
1 - copy your current iDVD application from the old Mac to the Applications folder of the new Mac. The latest version available is 7.1.2.  If you don't have that versoin go to the Apple Downloads site and download the iDVD 7.1.2 updater and run it on your current iDVD application.
2 - copy the iDVD folder that resides in the old Mac's HD/Library/Application Support folder to the same folder on your new Mac.

  • Plz help i really tired from searching creat MBR partition without bootcamp or install win7 in GPT guid

hello i have more than one partition on my macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch and its impossible to me to make it one partition for some reasons one of them that the partition sys is the second any way i tried to creart partition EXFAT and tried to install win7 but it says that can't be installed in GPT guid i talked chat with apple more than one 9 times to find answer but it's useless i get pro solution here

The TechRecipe article is old. Some of the commands still apply, but it is a very custom solution.
Yes, there is a way to create a custom hybrid MBR to accommodate additional partitions.
    1. This is a very fragile arrangement, and any Apple Software upgrade can break it.
    2. Any Hybrid MBR changes require this process to be repeated every time it breaks, which you should be willing to undertake.
    3. If you want to do this, and maintain it, please post the output of the following commands from OS X Terminal?
         diskutil list
         diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
         sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
    4. Sudo command require your password, which is not echoed back to you. You may also see a warning about improper use of sudo and potential data loss.
    5. Can you describe what exactly are you trying to establish?
    6. You previous attempt with exFAT failed, because your Mac requires a Hybrid MBR which maps the GPT to a MBR using a one-to-one mapping.
    7. If you just want to run OS X and Windows, and do not want to run any custom disk partitions, you should use Bootcamp Assistant. If it is failing, it can be addressed.

  • Ethernet port won't work on Win7 from Bootcamp install?

hey guys, i was just trying to install Win7 via Bootcamp. Win7 boots up with no issues at all, but i can't connect to the internet because the ethernet isn't picked up or it doesn't work. i must have done something wrong in Bootcamp -- what can i do?
    thanks

Did you install the Boot Camp drivers for Windows?
You can download them if you haven't already from Boot Camp Assisstant.
Open Boot Camp Assisstant (/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assisstant.app) and click on continue. On the next page tick only "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple". Click on Continue again, and then save them onto some external storage you will be able to access from Windows. Once that is complete, restart in Windows, connect your external storage, find a folder on it called WindowsSupport, open it, and double-click on setup.exe. This will install drivers for all of your Mac's hardware, including the Multi-Touch Trackpad, access to HFS storage volumes, and most importantly, ethernet.
