Installing Windows 7, Advice Please

I must have Windows 7 installed in a Boot Camp partition by tomorrow morning on this new iMac...
I tried to install XP Pro, but ran into too many difficulties, so I picked up a copy of Windows 7 Professional today.  I only need to run one accounting program in Windows, although there is a possibility of needing to install up to two other software packages for mapping purposes later on.  So, with XP, it was easy, with Windows 7 I can do 64 bit or 32 bit, and I don't know which is best.  I had formatted the partition as FAT32 before, but now I don't know if I should use NTFS or not.  I believe 32 gig is sufficient, but with a 1 TB drive, I can afford to go higher if necessary.
The only file sharing that I need is to be able to copy pdf files from the windows partition to the OSX partition.
Any and all help will be very appreciated!
Thanks,
John

You have to use NTFS. Just format BOOTCAMP when you get to that point.
http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
Most accounting can be run in VMs.
Go with 64-bit, you likely will have better support and RAM to match.
32GB is minimal. Don't cut yourself short. Would have been fine for XP but that isnt' supported.
20GB Windows plus: page, hibernation, 10GB free space needed, all the updates, temp/tmp and cache files and data plus applications.  If you have 8GB RAM then page + hibernation = 16GB or more just from those.
You may want to install Windows natively, buy Parallels and enable the VM so you can dual boot or run Windows as a guest OS side by side under Mac OS.

i have photoshop 5.0 limited edition and can't load it onto my pc with window 7. advice please? thanks

It is not compatible with Windows 7.  Advice could include telling you to purchase the latest version.  The other option would be to buy an old computer that is capable of running it.

  • Cant Install Windows 98SE. Please help!

Please can anyone tell me if they have successfully installed win 98SE on this motherboard. I have spent many hours with no success. Using the same CD player and installation disc installs fine on my old computer. However with the 865PE/G Neo2-P motherboard it doesnt it work. Bios recognises HD and CD. After partitioning and formatting the HD and booting up with the WIN98 start up disc setup command doesnt work. Error message Device driver not found MSCD001 No valid CD rom drives selected. Have tried using WIN98 full version and Win 98SE upgrade but no success. Any advice would be appreciated please.

I installed Windows 98 with no problems. Your hardware specs will be suitable to analyze your systems possible outfall.

  • Ntfs/mbr error while trying to install windows 8. PLEASE help!

Ok so before I explain anything I beg you to PLEASE not tell me I haven't read/searched enough for this because I'm already very close to throwing my macbook pro down the window and regretting it after a second!
    Here's what's happening:
    I have a Macbook Pro late 2011 (15 inch).
-I downloaded and prepared a USB bootable Windows 8 file.
-I used bootcamp assistant to create a new partition
When I turn on my laptop pressing the ALT key and choose to boot from eh EFI USB partition. I get asked to install Windows 8 and write down the product code.
Now, here's when it gets annoying:
    1) I get the error saying that I cannot choose that partition because it's not an NTFS formatted partition.
There's NO advanced options link on the bottom right corner. However, I can clearly see the Format button and when I choose the Partition and click format I get a new error saying ''Windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk has an MBR partition table.''
So, I downloaded a software that formats the partition to NTFS using Disk Utility. However, when I restart, I will get the ''MBR..'' error again.
    2) Concerning this second error (in case it was finally NTFS), I found another solution and that's the procedure of clicking ''SHIFT + F10'', choosing the partition disk from there and manually converting it to GBT or what ever that was.
Problem: When I manually type ''list disk'', there's only ONE partition showing as 495 GB (my laptop is 500gb) which obviously means that I'm not going to choose that and convert it to anything because it's the whole hard disk and not the bootcamp partition.
I closed the window and continued to see if I had forgotten to do the partitioning well, but once I got to the installation, my bootcamp partition was there in the partition windows, still giving me an error for MBR partition table.
So, please, I've restarted my laptop 50 times so far trying different ways to fix this, I've erased, formatted and divided the hard disk 1000 times and if I'm not mistaken that's really not something you wanna keep on doing to your laptop.
    ANY help will be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!
invisible hugs to anyone who wants to help me.

I had modified the bootcamp info.plist file to be able to prepare the USB separately, I had done this step last year and had no problem back then, also it works for so many people so I don't know why not for me. Anyway, I modified it back to how it was originally... and well, unfortunately still not working.
This will not work, as you have already found out. BCA sets the NVRAM based on Model Identifier to boot from the Optical drive for Macs that are supposed to have built-in Optical drives. It works for people because there are a few select models which support both, for example my 13-in 2012 MBP. It is an urban myth that it works. What is the issue with your Optical drive? Did you codesign it properly (you need the --deep qualifier)?
The only resolution I know of, is to re-install OS X to get the BCA package back, if it does not work - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support.
When BCA restarts by itself after all the steps, I get the no bootable device message. And if I open it using the alt/option key which works fine, I get stuck at the step where I can format the partition to NTFS but I get the error mentioning the MBR partition table...
It is expecting to boot from a DVD in the Optical drive. Please try the DVD method. Make sure you reset NVRAM and SMC. If necessary, delete the current partition using BCA only, and start over again.

    Hi
    Welcome To Lenovo Community
We are really sorry to hear about the issue you are facing,
Based from what i read in your post, keyboard is not functioning when logging to windows  & touchpad also is not working  . Please try entering in Bios , and check if you are able to use the keyboard , Load setup defaults , Keep tapping F8 to load windows in safe mode and check .
If you are able to use the keyboard & touchpad  , Try disabling startup by using MSCONFIG
    Then restart and check .
You may also try using UBUNTU Live CD to verify if the keyboard and touchpad are working

I have been trying to install window 7 operating system through booth camp assistant, i will finish all the stages for window to complete installation it will hook. the installation cannot be able to complete and i really install windows on it, please i need an assistance on how to go about it.

Right now I have 6 different systems installed. Windows XP, 7, and 8 plus Linux Mint, Commodore, and OS X Snow Leopard (for old times sake), all running on Mountain Lion.
I recommend reading the user manual as it greatly helps getting through the steps, however an intuitive person should pick it up fairly easily.
Thanks to BobTheFisherman for the link.
There are other ways to get Windows on a Mac but I'm a big fan of open-source software.
Give it a try. You might like it or it may not be your cup of tea.

  • I need help, I tried everything! Network controller after installing windows 7 on a windows 8.1 machine!

    Hello everyone!
I have a Dell Inspiron 3521. It had Windows 8.1 on it and I installed Windows 7 Pro OEM 64 bit. I did delete the old windows file. I was able to install all the drivers from the Dell website, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the right driver for the "Network Controller". I tried Driver Identifier and it shows me two drivers missing: 1: BCM43142A0, 2: Network Controller.
Here are the hardware IDs for the NC:
    PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&SUBSYS_00161028&REV_01
    PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&SUBSYS_00161028
    PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&CC_028000
    PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&CC_0280
I did find a post with someone having the same keys, but the driver in the link didn't help me. Maybe it's the way I installed the drivers? Or the way I installed windows 7 ?
    Please help!!!

The latest Dell Driver for the Dell Wireless 1704 Card is 6.30.223.228. You may also try the later Dell Wireless 1708 card 6.30.223.245 (both are Broadcom rebundled drivers) first directly and then through the device manger.

  • Installing Windows 7 via Bootcamp

Ok, so I understand the whole process except for ONE part.
After I have finished installing windows and it boots into it, I am told that you need to install the drivers for it before all the keys and what not will work properly in Windows mode. Everywhere I have read, including the Bootcamp guide says that I will need a Snow Leopard Disc to do that.
I don'e have one, I only have the discs that came with my macbook pro when i bought it... Can I use one of those? It would seem quite ridiculous to make Macbook Pro owners have to go out and purchase another retail copy of Snow Leopard JUST to install windows.
    Help please?

If your Macbook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Core i5 Mac OS X 10.6 shipped with SL then yes those are the only OS disc you need. You do not need to buy a retail copy.

  • Installing WIndows 7 Ultimate on Macbook pro 2011

After downloading Mac Windows support software and burn into a CD during installation process, I can not see any button or link to move on to install Windows 7. Please help.

So you are saying the Install or Remove Windows 7 box is grayed out. Have you partitioned the drive on your own using Disk Utility?
    Try doing this:
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    If you're using Snow Leopard:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
See if this helps at all.
It would help if you would put your hardware and OS information in your forum profile because it's hard to provide help without knowing as much as possible about your system hardware and software.

Some extra tip for you in order to avoid such issues in future.
Stop testing software on your real computer - use Virtual Machine instead:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/206286/stop-testing-software-on-your-pc-use-virtual-machine-snapshots-inste...
    http://www.howtogeek.com/196060/beginner-geek-how-to-create-and-use-virtual-machines/
On a Virtual machine you run as much software and OS as you want without the need to sacrafice the integrity of original host operating system, without re-installations, etc.  What is best here for you is that it is free. You can test with free 30 or 90 day trial version of the operating system (e.g. trial Windows Enterprise edition), you can test with free Linux-based OS, and VirtualBox (from Oracle) and VMWare Player are both free.
