Installing Windows 7 OEM on Maverick

Apple Store advised me to get a Windows 7 OEM 64 bit disc for my 2013 macbook pro:
http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Premium-System-Builder-Packaging/dp/B00H09BB16/ref =sr_1_1?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1393131478&sr=1-1&keywords=windows+7 .  This is a generic OEM (not Dell, etc.)
I am using bootcamp, yet it won't install, and I end up with a black screen saying "No hardware detected."
An apple-care advisor later told me that bootcamp doesn't support OEM's at all.
But I have read of people installing Windows 7 on bootcamp using OEM disks throughout the Apple Forums.
There is also good feedback on installing Windows 7 on parallels, but I plan to use Windows for heavy gaming and game design, and I was advised against parallels for this purpose.
I'd love some feedback and advice on how best to install Windows 7.

Apple’s Genius Bar looked at the computer and the Bootcamp partition and said it was a Microsoft issue—and to call their customer support.  Apple, after endorsing the Bootcamp and Windows 7 option enthusiastically is now saying, that it’s a 50-50 proposition that Windows works on Maverick and MacBook.
Microsoft says it’s a Bootcamp problem.
When I try to repartition with Bootcamp, it's saying there is no driver.
Anyone want to weigh in?
Is it merely a dud disk (that we paid full price for on Amazon—that is not a bootleg of any sort?
Is it worth investing in another disk?

    Utter nonsense.

Just use the defaults. Windows 7 is very slow and really RAM-hungry. You will need 8 GB of RAM on your Mac because Windows 7 needs 2 GB all by itself. Even with that, it runs twice as slow as Windows XP.
If you've already spent money, there isn't much you can do at this point. I suggest using Apple Pages and, when you are ready to submit something to your professor, export it as a Word document and then re-save that Word document as a Word XML doc. I don't know why Pages doesn't export in docx format. It is built into the operating system. I even have a little utility that will save your clipboard directly to docx. You can download a fully-functional demo from: http://www.etresoft.com/pastefiler
There are many other utilities that can do the same, including Office 2011 itself. I prefer Pages because it supports modern OS X technologies and is much faster and easier to use than Word, but Pages only exports to DOC, not DOCX. Word is better if you are doing really sophisticated document, but it costs a fair amount money.

  • Install Windows 7 and delete Mavericks

    Hello
I have an MacBook Air and would like to install and run Windows 7 (64 bit) in stead of Mavericks. The have been happy to run Mac OS X on my Mac but now there are more meaning in to run Windows because there are programs that we runs on my work that I can´t run under Mac OS X. Microsoft Office is better on Windows than Mac and I will also like to program so I will install Visual Studio Express.
I have some questions about installing Windows on a Mac.
    1) How does Apple thinks you should install Windows on a MacBook Air when Boot-camp does not support creation of a Windows Install USB boot disc from an ISO-file and there is no DVD-drive in the MacBook Air? Yes, I know there is at trick that make it possible but why is it standard in Boot-camp?
    2) What is the best way to install Windows on a Mac? If it is possible to run Windows without Mac OS X it will be the best solution for me. How do I do that? With Boot-camp you have to run both Windows and Mac OS X. I will like to run 100 % Windows and no Mac OS X.
    3) What is yours experiences with run Windows on a Mac? What about the keyboard does It work well under Windows? How do I use the Windows hotkeys like control-alt-delete?
    4) Is it possible to boot direct into Windows with an USB boot disc? I will like to take a Image of my installation.

What year is the Macbook Air? Is your MBA not in the following list?
From Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions
Can I use a downloaded (ISO) version of Windows with Boot Camp?
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 and later), MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later, including Retina models), Mac mini (Mid 2011 and later), and iMac (Late 2012) can install downloaded (ISO) versions of Windows 7 and 8.

  • Installing Windows xp OEM sp2 problem

I am having trouble loading window XP pro OEM sp2 using Bootcamp on my macbook OSX 10.5.8 It gets through copying all the files and reboots successfully through to the install window and the setup program for windows (where it displays various marketing info and has dot buttons down the left hand side). It says it will take 39 mins to setup but the counter never changes and I have left it up to an hour and nothing happens although once I did get a disk error message (something about cleaning the CD - can't remember exactly). I am doing full installs and have tried FAT and NTFS. At first I thought it was because it was an OEM but it is a Microsoft OEM and other people online seem to have no problems installing and I have read all the posts here and no-one seems to have this particular problem. Is this a dud CD or version of windows or am I just doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated since I would really like to use the OEM I have and not have to buy a retail.

    Hi Lynnne
I don't think the OEM disc is the problem although I cannot be 100% sure. Please let me explain:
I initially installed XP-Pro using an OEM disc, way back in 2006 - worked fine back then - installing XP in Parallels, VMware Fusion, and finally BootCamp when ever it was that it came out of Beta.
Now? I cannot get past a hal.dll error on a clean install using BootCamp on a freshly formatted (FAT32 or NTFS) partition - using THE SAME disc!
Why? I suspect it has to do with a BootCamp update from a few months ago (June?). Ever since that BootCamp update I've got nothing but unresolvable blue screens in XP. Now, however, I cannot re-install XP. Heck, I've also tried installing Vista 64bit as well as a recently purchased Win7Pro 64 bit - all no-go's.
So to recap - I don't think the OEM disc is the problem. I'm looking into my BootCamp update theory.

  • Installing Windows XP Home over XP OEM in Bootcamp

I installed Windows XP OEM edition in Bootcamp and have been running Sage in this without problems for some time. Recently updated to 10.5 and latest Bootcamp and all ok.
My problem is that there is now a need to run in Parallels as well and as I discovered initially, the OEM version of Windows cannot be activated in Parallels after doing so in Bootcamp. What I want to do is replace the OEM version in Bootcamp with the Full Home edition so that I can run it in Parallels as well.
I am not very experienced with installing Windows but I understand that I can just install over the top of the OEM version. What I need to know is will this replace the OEM version completely (what I want) and allow me to set up new activations? Is there likely to be any need for reinstalling Sage or other programs or repeating set-ups? Is there a better way of doing this, eg is it possible to just purchase a new license key or use the one that comes with the full version of XP and reactivate?
    Thanks for any advice

    1. Call Microsoft and insist that your version of Windows is on the same computer however you would like to install it on another partition as a virtual machine. They should be able to help there and issue another product key.
    2. The other thing is that parallels can use the boot camp partition with windows on it so you don't hae to install windows again. That information is available [HERE|http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/bootcamp>.
I would try Option 1 first and then if does not work then go with Option 2.

  • Cannot install windows 8 because the disk is in MBR partition. Need help.

I am on a MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011. I am trying to install Windows 8(OEM) using bootcamp witht a USB. I made the USB bootable from the Windows Usb tool, and made the Bootcamp partition through bootcamp. I hold down the option key at startup and select the usb. It starts the setup, everything is fine untill I select advance option to install and select the BOOTCAMP partition. It says you need a GUID partition table to install but I have MBR. I have checked in disk utility and the partition map scheme is GUID partition table. Do i have to format the whole drive to fix this? That really isn't a problem. Also, FYI, this mac recently had its logic board replaced by apple. Could that have anything to do with it?
I have been stuck on the problem for days and it is getting really frustrating.  Any help is appriciated. Thank you.

Hey there, I have the same problem as Noor440 discribed, just that I burned a dvd with Windows 8 and it doesnt work. I can boot it from the CD in EFI mode but then it happens the same as with Noor. I can't install it because of MBR and its asking for GPT.
The thing is that when I try to boot from the regular CD (not in EFI mode). My screen goes black and I can't do anything about it.
I read in different posts that to install WIN7 or XP I have to have my optical drive at the original place just that I removed it in order to install an additinal SSD.
Is there no other way than to open my macbook again put the SSD in the place of the original HD (at the moment it is in the slot of the optical drive) and then partition my SSD with bootcamp, install Win 8 and change the optical drive with the HD again. Last but not least I would need to redo the syslinks as well ...
would be nice if anybody has some good suggestions wether I can avoid that all ...
    thanks a lot

  • Windows XP OEM Full

Hi, is it possible to install Windows XP OEM without SP2, and after instalation upgrade it to SP2? I asking this because I have the 2002 version of XP.
    Thanks,
    Biga

XP version is 2002 however double check to see if SP2 is already on there. If not then you cannot install it without SP2. Service Pack 2 must be on the same installation disk at the time of installation. Many have tried doing what you suggest but without success. Furthermore, if your OEM disk came with a PC that you already have then that will not work either even if it has SP2 on it. This is because that OEM disk has been used to install WIndows on your PC and its license cannot be used on different PCs.
So, to use an OEM FULL version, you will need to buy it.
There is one process that you can try to make this work. Assuming that you have a FULL version of Windows XP with SP1 and you have SP2 downloaded and saved on your HD, then you can use a method called slipstream. This method combines Windows XP and SP2 on to one installation disk to be used for installation of windows on a boot camp partition. This process is slightly difficult and instructions will need to be followed PERFECTLY. It has proven to be successful in some cases. Frankly, I don't think it is worth the headache. The instructions on slipstreaming are available [HERE|http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html].

  • Can you use Windows 7 OEM on bootcamp

I want to install Windows 7 OEM edition on bootcamp? (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-software-intended-builders/dp/B004Q0PT 3I/) Does anyone have experiance of this working?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You shouldn't have any problem installing that Windows 7 version, as it's general for all PCs, including Macs. The only problem you will have is that you will only be able to use that license with the iMac, and you won't be able to transfer it to another PC

  • Question about Windows XP OEM vs. Windows XP retail

will i have any problems purchasing and installing windows XP OEM vs a retail version? i really don't want to spend $200 on windows since i'm only getting it to test websites on IE BUT i can get an OEM version for $88 at newegg.
i'm assuming they are the same except that the retail version comes in box.
also, is there any reason to get the pro version vs the home version? if i go with the pro version should i get the "X64 Edition" or the regular pro version?
this will be installed on a mac pro
    thanks

The only difference between the two OEM vs Retail is in the licensing of the softwares use. The OEM version is licensed to be used on a single specific computer (the computer you bought, or built from parts), and cannot be used on another computer, even if the original computer is no longer in use. The Retail license, does not include the limited single computer use, and can be installed on any computer, as long as it is the only one using that license.
As for home vs pro, for you use, I don;t see the need for pro.
You also don;t need the 64 bit edition for just testing web pages.

  • Install Windows 8.1 on iMac running Mavericks

    Hello everybody,
I have a problem with my iMac 21.5 late 2012 running Mavericks. I wanted to install Windows 8.1 on a partition of the Mac, and therefore I bought the DVD from Microsoft and started Boot Camp. I followed the whole procedure, saved the support software on a 16gb flash drive, and all seemed to be going on fine, up to when I discovered I wasn't able to use my Apple Magic Mouse and Keyboard to finish configuring Windows (I mean, from where it asks you to enter a PC name and set the color of the system). I repeated the whole process again and again, but I always get stuck at the same point... Any suggestion?
Thank you very much in advance for your help

Windows will not boot from USB if the Mac has an internal optical drive. This is something that Microsoft implemented.

  • Cannot install Windows 8.1 with BootCamp on Mavericks

I have a brand spankin' new Late 2013 27" iMac, fully updated, with a 3TB Fusion drive. I have thrice attempted to install Windows 8.1 via BootCamp 5.5, with the 64bit edition DVD on the SuperDrive, and allotting 1TB out of the 3 available. There are no other partitions besides OS X and the BootCamp partition. The Windows installer successfully begins, but each time it cannot locate any partitions to load itself on. The list is just...blank.
I've already scoured the forums here for support, and tried several claimed remedies, such leaving all USB ports clear (except for the SuperDrive) until after install (even removing the flash drive with the Apple support files), and had a long chat with Apple Care today...they said the engineers would get back to me in about a week. I read somewhere that hard drives over 2.2TB may be an issue, but Apple states that Mavericks has no problem with this, leading me to believe maybe Windows 8.1 is still lagging in this department.
To that end, I recall someone, somewhere mentioning how to carefully partition the drive to get around this, and that Windows absolutely, positively, had to be on the 4th partition, including the hidden partitions such as Recovery, Boot OS X, etc. Only problem is that Disk Utility is showing way more hidden partitions than this, and they seem to be unremovable.
Does anybody have a solution/workaround for this, or are both products still too new to have a found a way to play nicely together?

I did it. After fours hours and two hours on the phone with Apple support, I installed Windows 8.1 to my iMac. So, I just wanted to share it with you.
    System:
iMac 2013, 27" monitor, 1T fusion drive, wirless keyboard, magic mouse.
    Software:
    OS X 10.9
    Windows 8.1 full version 64bit
(I skipped some steps such as type in software key, choose language, etc.)
    1. For my last try, Instead of using Bootcamp assistant to setup partition for Windows, I used disk utility to create an 100G space for Windows with FAT file system and named it BOOTCAMP.
    2. Insert Windows CD into the USB super drive.
    3. Shutdown iMac.
    4. While press and hold the left "option" key, turn on iMac.
    5. Select CD/Windows icon to boot.
    6. Choose Custom installation
    7. Select the partition named BOOTCAMP (I am not sure why it is 200G; I assigned 100G. Well...)
    8. Format
And the rest is history. By the way, when Windows restarts during installation, make sure to press and hold the left "option" key to boot up Windows.
I do not know why but I am happy now. As a matter of fact, I am sending this message from Windows 8.1 running on my iMac.
    Good luck to you.

  • How do I install Windows with my OEM disc?

So I bought the Windows 8.1 64-bit OEM installation disc, and was using BCA (Boot Camp Assistant) to install it on my Late 2012 Mac mini.
I did as I was prompted: plugged in an 8GB USB drive, inserted my disc into my external reader, opened BCA, checked the the all the boxes as per recommended than clicked Continue.
I was than brought to the part where I had to 'choose the ISO file'. I thought it would have automatically detected my disc, but since that wasn't the case, I proceeded to browse my disc to search for the ISO file. And there was none.
I even thought that using the OEM disc to install Windows using BCA was wrong, but it is actually recommended over the Retail one.
Can anyone help me in this?
PS: Please forgive my bad English.

You will need to convert the DVD to an ISO using Disk Utility. Please see Disk Utility 12.x: Create a disk image and Section Create a disk image from a disk or folder
From Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems
An authentic Microsoft Windows full install disc or ISO file
You may not be able to use an OEM disk.

  • I can't install Windows 8.1 on my Imac with Mavericks using Bootcamp. Why?

I can't install Windows 8.1 on my Imac 27" with Mavericks using Bootcamp. Why? I first did all the software updates needed, downloaded the driver software to a 32Gb flash drive formatted as FAT32, fired up Bootcamp Assistant, inserted the Windows 8.1 Full version 64 bit installation DVD as requested, and got as far as partitioning (tried this at 82 Gb for the Windows partition), then the MAC rebooted but halted before getting to the login page. Then a black screen came up with the error message: 'non-system disk - Press any key to reboot'. I did this and nothing happened. I was forced to shut down forcibly then restart with my finger held down on the option key. Then a screen came up with two icons: the macintosh HD icon and the Windows DVD icon. I double-clicked on the Windows DVD icon and the MAC came up with another black screen and error message: 'CDBoot: Couldn't find BOOTMGR'. Had to shut down forcibly again and restart as before, this time ejecting the Windows DVD first. Then I repartitioned my MAC back to all OSX. What the **** do I do now? Applecare couldn't help me beyond this point. They said to contact Microsoft. I notice a lot of other MAC owners have had similar problems.
    Please help? tagjsmith.

i have follow the instructions that windows 8 installation on 10.9 by using a usb,  and i have a bootcamp partition. but the screen stay white after system reboot.
did anyone have installed windows 7 or 8 on mid 09 with 10.9 Mavericks successful ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your MacBook Pro is not designed to install Windows through an USB drive, so do not use this option. You are getting a white screen because your MacBook cannot start up from the USB drive with Windows.
Instead, use a DVD with Windows, so you will be able to install Windows. Follow these steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf
Mid 2009 MacBooks Pro do not support Windows 8 officially
