Installing Windows 7 on a current partition in drive bay 3

Hi,
I want to install Windows 7 on my 2011 Macpro. I currently have a 300GB partition I'm not using in drive slot 3 of the computer..
When I open bootcamp to prepare the drive, It tells me I cant do anything with this drive apart from format it and then partition.. Is this necessary given the partition is already there, or can I just use it? If so, do I just need to format it to FAT32, then start the windows 7 installation process outside bootcamp?
Also, it says in the apple bootcamp guide that for Windows 7 to install, the drive with its partition on needs to be in drive slot 1.. Is this true or is it fine where it is?
Finally, it it won't work installing on the about partition, I have a spare 250gb SATA I drive (from an old G5 Powermac).. Can I put this in drive slot 4, format it and install windows on thet? Would it still need to be done through boot camp?

Boot Camp Assistant is limited not very forgiving.
Any drive bay is fine, I use #3 but some find #1 or 2 work better.
Remove all the other drives when you do install.
Formatting and having one drive dedicated is much easier. That way you don't even need Boot Camp Assistant other than to download drivers (you aren't on Lion so no).
BCA prepares the partition table. It expects to have GPT and make the protective MBR active and support booting Windows. That is its only real purpose. And is most often used where Mac OS is present on partition.
The partition you had isn't prepared for Windows. You would hve to turn it into an OS X volume only, small perhaps, then use the rest.
Pull your drives and use the 250GB. But do so with just that drive. If you can't then move it.
there is no such thing as a 2011 Mac Pro workstation, although lately they not only ship with Lion (makng it 2011) but the firmware will no longer support downgrading to 10.6.8, that would be "2011."
If you have and want to really support two cpu sockets, then Pro version. And of course 64-bit. So Windows 7 64-bit SP1 System Builder $129 from 'Egg or Amazon if you still need to buy something, or an MSDN account of course.

I have recently installed windows XP on my bootcamp partition. I am in need for the drivers and what not so that it will run effectivly and the bootcamp assistant canot find the "Windows Support Sofware" Can anyone help me find it manually?

You both would have had correct awnsers, but i have a Macbook that is close to three years old. And i can't seem to find my Disc. The only reason i haven't ordered a new one in case of emergencies is I plan on upgrading to the new OS in less then a month.

Install Windows XP in its own partition?

Hello, all! I have questions on partitioning for Windows XP Home.
I just recently purchased an Athlon 64 & MSI Neo motherboard, and I'll be getting a Maxtor 60GB Serial ATA hard drive soon. I'm looking for more speed in XP, so a coworker suggested I put Windows XP on its own partition, and data on the other.
My questions are:
1) How much space should I allow for XP's partition? After installation, will that many files be added to the partition over time?
2) What are the advantages/disadvantages of giving XP its own partition?
3) When installing data to the second partition, should I allow a Program Files folder to be created, or just install the applications' folders straight to the root of the partition?
Is installing Windows XP in its own partition the "thing to do"? Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

this time i never bothered my array is my c drive all 149gb of it
and i see no difference
if you dont have another drive to back stuff up on then do it for sure
then you can format c but not loose the mp3 collection
but most cases a game loaded in another partition does not work right any way after c is reloaded and needs installing again any way

I can't install using DVD R/W because it's not working.

Is it possible to install Windows 7/8 from a partition on a separate drive?

Hi everyone,
Early 2008 Mac Pro with 10.8.2.
I have two sata drives mounted in my tower--the OS drive and a media drive.
I'm wondering if it's possible to partition 10 or so GB off of that secondary media drive (OS Extended Journaled, GUID), load the win 7 (or 8) ISO and install Windows through bootcamp via that new partition.
Alternately, I have an external USB drive (sata), and could possibly try that same method of formatting off 10 gigs and loading the ISO in a similar manner if bootcamp only checks between DVD media and USB for where it wants to read the installer file.
This method would circumvent the need for a blank DVD or a USB flash drive--both of which I don't currently have.
Does anybody have any experience with this?

I realize that this system doesn't support UEFI but I have an Adaptec 3805 RAID controller in this system that does support the advanced format hard drives, so I would think I should
be OK there.
Attached to the RAID controller are 3 - 1.5TB SATA Hard Drives in a RAID 5 yeilding 2.72TB's of usable space.
I followed the following process to convert the array to GPT.
I booted to the Server 2008 R2 Ent installation DVD.
I select next at the language \ time & currency format \ Keyboard selection screen.
Then I select the 'repair your computer' option at the following screen.
I do not select the 'repair' (default) option, but instead select the radio button above it (I forget what that's labeled) working from memory here - which gives me the option to
launch a command prompt.
I launch diskaprt from that command prompt.
First I selected the disk
list disk (this displays the installed disks)
select disk 0
The I converted the disk to gpt
convert gpt
Then I created 200 MB EFI partition:
create partition
efi size=200
Then I created MSR
partition:
create partition
msr size=128
Then I created primary
partition:
create partition
primary
...and it took remaining
available space to itself.
I assigned drive
letter C to this new first "primary" partition
Assign letter=c
I confirmed the order is:
I confirmed the partition order is:
ESP > MSR > DATA Partition
After all of that I restart into the Windows installation and attempt to install by selecting the newly created primary partition and am presented with an error that states:
“Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 3. (Show details)”
and the details show:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the gpt partition style."
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Can I install Windows 8.1 as Bootcamp partition from OSX Mountain Lion using a USB stick?

I have the following:
Bootable USB stick with Windows 8.1 - 64 bit
MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.5 - it's probably 3-4 years old.
The Bootcamp partition currently has Windows 7 installed.
I want to know whether I can install Windows 8.1 from a USB stick into a Bootcamp partition. Apple's article on the topic refers to Bootcamp 5.1, but my OSX install has Bootcamp 5.0 - I am assuming 5.1 comes with the Mavericks version. I don't want to upgrade to Mavericks because I am running out of space as it is on the OSX partition.
Thus my question. So can I?

Your laptop has a DVD drive, right? If so you need to burn your ISO to a disc, will not work off USB

(OS X Lion) cant install windows on HD with multiple partitions

I have installed os x 10.7 lion the day it rolled out from the app store and everything was good. But now, I decided to re-install windows 7 on my macbook on lion. I currently have 2 partitions: 1 for media files and the main partition for the os files. But I cant use boot camp because it keeps on notifying me that i can only have one partition so I could install windows through boot camp. Is that the thing with lion, when I was able to do the same with snow leopard?
Now, I figured that I could not really do anything about and decided to install windows on a single partition and everything went well, though I am still sick that I had to copy everything on one parition.
My next question is: how come that after everytime I get to install windows, the partition does not recognize it anymore after I try to divide the mac partition on disk utility? Here's the scenario, I am able to install windows properly, so I boot to the lion parition and divide it into 2 through disk utility (making the total number of partitions to 3), so I could have one partition I could access both on windows and lion, but after that, when I try to boot windows, the system does not recognize the boot camped anymore. Do I have to stick with just 2 partitions(1 for lion and 1 for windows)? Or there is something wrong with my windows installation?
I am certain that I do not erase the windows partition as I can still the files on that partition through the finder.
I am in need of serious help here. Please.

Use Fusion, or Parallels. They are better for running Winblows, and you don't have to reboot in to it, you simply run Win 7 as an app. I have tried Boot Camp, a few times since it first came available, and it has always been cumbersome, and problematic, to use, and allows typical Winblows issues to happen. Running Win 7 virtual seems to not have those same issues.
Until I retire, soon, I still have to use Windows, along with Macs, Linux, and UNIX, but after that, it all goes, except for the Macs - no more headaches.
Give Fusion, or Parallels a try, they are cheap, and work really well.

Installing Windows from virtualisation onto bootcamp partition - formatting problem!

I hope I can describe this well enough.
I'm in the situation of trying to install Windows 7 from a .iso I've made as my superdrive is totally dead. I'm running 10.7.4.
Currently what I've done is basically the first chunk of steps from this post:

I get hung up on the windows installer right away though. When I'm installing windows into my raw disk (bootcamp.vmdk) I get this:
"Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057"
I've tried reformatting the partition I made with boot camp assistant to NTFS preemptively with Paragon NTFS in hopes that the installer would skip the formatting step, but no dice.
Any thoughts on how to move forward here? Is there a permissions change that I somehow haven't made? I can't seem to find any documentation or posts on anyone in exactly this situation.
This is a really pressing problem actually, so quick responses are especially appreciated!

I've actually resolved this!
Well, not that I fixed it. But I was able to hack into Boot camp assistant and convinve it to let me make a bootable Windows 7 Usb key and install from that!

How to Install Windows OS on a two partitioned internal HDD?

I have a late 2011 macbook pro 8,2 (MD318HN/A). A month ago, I installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp. For that I made a partition of 50 GB on my internal 500 GB HDD. After sometime in need of space, i formatted that 50 GB partition using Disk Utility in Mac OS Ext. (J).
Till this everything was fine.
Now I want to install Windows 8 Release Preview :
And now to install Windows 8 Release Preview, when i go to Bootcamp, it shows me an error that windows can be installed on a single partition HDD.
Trying format the internal HDD in one partition:
So i tried format the HDD of my MBP. In Lion Disk Recovery Mode (Cmd+R) using the Disk utility I tried to format the HDD but it gives me an error "Couldn't unmount the disk". I tried many a time but failed then re-installed the Mac OS X Lion from internet. Now that 50GB partition is showing in finder but still the error from Bootcamp exists when tried to install WIN 8.
So tell me what to do?
I have nothing in MBP to backup etc. So tell me any solution. I have arount 4-5Mbps download speed too.

Download MiniTool Partition Wizard. The boot disk is free, and it contains all you need to delete all partitions on your drive. This same problem happened to me when I was tinkering with installing Windows 8 using EFI boot (incidentally, DON'T - Apple's EFI implementation is, to date, not compatible since it's partially proprietary).

You'll need a USB mouse, since the trackpad mouse wont work with this partiticular image, but it's the easiest tool to use from a user experience point of view, which is why I'm recommending it.
After you delete all partitions using this tool (and press apply) you can go ahead and restore OSX by any means you wish (internet recovery, dvd install etc.)

I have been trying to install Windows 7 on my macbook pro (mid 2009, MBP53). I have successfully created a bootcamp partition using the assistant. When the computer tries to boot from the windows 7 install dvd, the screen is just black. The dvd spins for a bit, then stops and the computer is just black (no blinking cursor).
Any advice would be very appreciated.

What kind of an install DVD are you using for Windows?
You can use any DVDs that are hardware specific. Only the full non-hardware soecific DVDs work on the Mac.

Unable to install windows 7 on boot camp partition

Hello everyone!
As the title says, I'm trying to install windows 7 on my macbook - the 2009 13 inch model- and failing at it. I have been peeking around the net and I haven't found any solutions, so here I come.
If I'm not wrong I need to format the partition, since boot camp does a FAT32 forma and it won't work for Windows 7. I do that from the windows installer, when it asks me for a driver (no idea which one it's talking about). Then it allows me to choose the partition to install windows but the installation process doesn't seem to work for some reason. I've done it before and I've had similar problems (I just kept trying things untill something worked ) but apparently I couldn't do it now to safe my life.
I hope I've been detailed enough for you to be able to help me. Thanks ^^

It depends of the OS X version you're using. If it's 10.6, insert the Mac OS X DVD and install them.
If it's 10.7 or 10.8:
1. Press X key while your Mac is starting to start into OS X.
2. Open Boot Camp Assistant, download drivers and burn them into a DVD or USB drive.
3. Start into Windows and install Boot Camp drivers

Is it possible to install Windows 7 on a GPT disk?
I created a RAID 0 array on my dual Xeon 5580 system and tried installing Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit RTM. When I got to the "Where do you want to install Windows" part I used shift-F10 to open up a command window, then I used diskpart to create a GPT with the following partitions:
Disk 0 Part 1 - 102 MB EFI System
Disk 0 Part 2 - 128 MB MSR
Disk 0 Part 3 - 500 MB Primary
Disk 0 Part 4 - 7446 GB Primary
But there was a message "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 3 (show details)" - clicking on "show details" gave me "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
What gives? I thought Windows Vista and beyond supported GPT.
The problem with MBR is that you can't have a file system larger than 2 TB.

Can't install Windows 7 on Boot Camp partition

I ran the Boot Camp application and it formatted a partition but when I try to install Windows 7 Home Premium full version it says the partition is invalid. There was no option to choose NTFS or FAT and now the installer is telling me that the partition is not NTFS.
What should I do?

Yup. Windows will not install when there are other drives present that have GPT.
Very old simple to just remove until later.
If you were installing to the same drive as OS X (prefer not to of course) still need to pull the drives temporarily until after Windows is done.
you do not need a new drive. You can just format the drive now that you were going to use:
Disk Utility: Partition: 1 or more, does not matter: Advanced: Options - choose MBR Windows partition table format. Click Apply. Then Apply again.
When in Windows 7, choose the entire drive - Advanced Options and delete what DU created! let Windows do its thing - no need to create or format if you deleted / removed those partitions.

All Macs use the GUID partition table. If you're trying to install Windows with EFI install, you should know that you can only do this with Windows 8 and Apple doesn't support this kind of installation, so it can fail and damage the Mac. The best way is to use Apple Boot Camp

Installing Windows 8.1 with bootcamp, partition issues.

So I am trying to install windows 8.1 onto my MBP running the latest 10.9.2 operating system. It took a while to get the HD to successfully partition, however when I finally got it working, upon booting from the USB drive I got this error message
windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk has an mbr partition table windows can only be installed to GPT disks
Is there any way to change the partition table or to fix this?
I just tried restoring the partition to one, verifiying and repairing the disk in recovery mode, then re-running boot camp, issue persists.

Well, when you start the computer you should press ALT to show the boot manager. With Windows 8 and 8.1 (for Windows 7 there's not this problem) there should be three different icons: the OS X one, and then two called Wininstall (or something like that) and the other is similar but there should be written something like "EFI Boot".
Well, don't choose the EFI Boot one and you should be fine.
If you choose the first one the Windows installer format the Bootcamp partition correctly, and then you can start the procedure.
