Installing Windows 7 on Macbook Pro, OS X Lion

Hi. I'm trying to put a partition of Windows 7 on my late 2008 Macbook pro.
I've look at loads of information and video on Youtube on 'how to install Windows 7' the way I need to.
My CD/DVD drive doesn't work for reasons unknown, it was like it when I got it.
So I'm trying to install Windows 7 by USB pen drive, but boot camp won't recognize it. I've made the Pen drive readable (It's a USB-DVD). Plus, I can't download the windows support software. I've seen on some threads you can just put the installation disk in, you get with the Mac. Is this true and if so which installation disk do I use, snow leopard or lion?
Can anybody help me please. Can anyone do a step be step on how to install it or something? any questions please ask. Thank you.

Search online for "Install Windows 7 BootCamp no disk via USB instructions"
We only have information for BootCamp installs via the disk, not USB.
You may want to later look into WinClone, it's a OS X program that can clone a BootCamp Win 7 partition, however you have to have one first, (perhaps from another Mac) on a external drive to do so.
You'll have to revalidate with Microsoft on the final machine due to the hardware change if you allow it to connect to the Interent and update when it's first installed on the guest Mac.

  • Installing windows on MacBook Pro

I am looking into installing Windows on my Pro because I need Visual Studio for programming and just need some questions answered.
    1. Is there a Mac native alternative to Visual Studio? I am using it for a Visual basic class I am taking and we are creating windows applications.
    2. Can I buy an external hard drive to run Windows OS from? I opted for the ~256gb SSD MacBook Pro and am not wanting to waste storage space on Windows OS, especially since I do not foresee using it after this class.
    3. If I cannot run Windows from an external hard drive:  How easy is Windows installation, as well as how easy is it to remove Windows OS when I am finished using Visual Studio? Are there risks to my MacBook accompanied with Windows installation?

    1, No
2, No, Microsoft doesn't allow that

  • Installing Windows on Macbook Pro, NO BOOTCAMP

I have a 15 inch core 2 duo Macbook Pro and I went to restore my computer to tiger once again and when I did I relised that the disk is too scratched up, I can only get about 90 percent of the minimal installation done.
After a while of trying diffrent things i got fet up and partitioned my hard drive to Master boot record and poped in my Win7 install disk, I installed Windows 7 perfectly with no problems but now when I go to boot it up all I get is a grey screen and after a while a folder icon pops up with a question mark on it.
How can I fix this without using another mac or bootcamp, because I DON'T have access to one and i DON'T have access to another mac cd, so don't give me that option, lol.. The only thing I have access to is another windows 7 computer.
Please help, I thought mac was suppose to be one of the top brand computers. especially with the price of them, but so far I've had more trouble with this mac than what I did with my HP, I had my HP 3 years now and my macbook not even a year.
    Thanks,

    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Select the Windows disk icon and click on the arrow button.
Where did you get the Windows installer from? Your HP? That's an OEM disc that cannot be used except on your HP. You need a retail Windows disc if you want to boot the Mac exclusively with Windows. Of course you will not have any of the hardware drivers for Windows for use on the Mac hardware.
I don't understand your complaints about a computer you don't seem to know how to use, your installer discs are all scratched up and no longer usable, but you have had lots of trouble with it. And, all your doing is trying to use it as a Windows computer. Defies logic.

  • Installing windows on macbook pro without bootcamp. Will this allow for switchable graphics?

Hi everyone, I was thinking of buying a new Macbook Pro Retina 15 Inch with the discrete nvidia graphics card inbuilt with it.
I love windows and I am planning on running windows 7/8 on the macbook pro as my primary OS (because of advantages of gaming and being familarized with windows os), however I have heard the issue of running windows on bootcamp severally drains battery life as apple does not allow you to switch the nvidia graphics to the integrated graphics. Is this true? I have heard that running windows 7/8 on bootcamp allows for only around 3:30 hours of battery life, whilst OSX allows for 8+ since it uses the integrated graphics primarily when not running GPU demanding applications.
I am wondering if you can install windows 7 without bootcamp which will wipe apple OS from the laptop completely. Will this allow for the laptop to do switable graphics without problems allowing the laptop to save much needed battery life?
    Thanks in advance.
    Michael

Sorry it seems to have taken so long for you to get an answer on this question!
Your last post was mostly right... It IS a bad idea to go that route!
While it's technically POSSIBLE to get Windows in place without OSX, it's a MAJOR technical hassle and you need to jump through several hoops to get to that point.
In addition to the hassle required, having an OSX partition can be incredibly useful at times - I've had my Windows system break several times in the past where the automated (and even manual) startup-repair process failed to get Windows booting again, but a short boot into OSX later, I have the problem resolved (via OSX) and am able to get back into Windows.
Finally, you need to be aware that the graphics card situation isn't because of the presence of OSX. Just because you get rid of MacOS doesn't mean you suddenly will be able to use either graphics card! The limitation comes into play with the hardware drivers necessary to get all your hardware working in Windows - they just don't have the facility to switch graphics cards built into them.
I'm afraid you're stuck with the NVidia card when using Windows, one way or another!
Bootcamp is a prerequisite BTW. Without it you won't be able to get Windows installed at all (at least not without MAJOR stumbling block, again!), and again, the graphics card limitation isn't due to OSX or Bootcamp.
Also, battery life... Yes. You'll have significantly less in Windows, and this isn't entirely because of the graphics card situation either. MacOS is just built so well, with the limited hardware used by Apple in mind, that power-management when using OSX os significantly better! The legendary battery life of Apple systems is actually primarily due to the operating system, not the batteries themselves!
As a helpful indication: On my 2009 17" MBP I get about 7 hours on the integrated chip in OSX (8 is pusing it, but is possible sometimes); about 5 hours in OSX when using the NVidia; and about 3 and a half when I'm in Windows.
Hope this all helps you. If you have any further questions feel free!
Apologies for the scattered approach to answering your posts - it's LATE where I am and I"m kinda rushing through things... :-)

  • Can't Install windows on Macbook Pro Early 2011 with SSD upgrade

    Dear all,
A few months ago I had an SSD upgrade and I purchased a Caddy and installed my old HDD on it, and I also changed my Battery because the old one only lasted for 15 inutes after 40 cycles :O
Anyways when I insert a windows 7 or 8 x64 DVD in my USB Samsung DVD Drive, My mac book detects Windows (with the windows 7 DVD) and Detects Windows and EFI Boot (with Windows 8),  I have tried every option of those doesn't work.
With EFI it just boots Mac
With Windows it boots to a screen with one blinking cursor top left and then it ejects the DVD ROM and that it :s
I do not know what is wrong :/
P.S. when i installed the SSD I had windows on the old drive it didn't work after the upgrade (this is what made me link both incidents).

I am willing to try this, but I was kinda trying to find a solution that doesn't need me to unscrew stuff ..etc

I just upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion. Now I want to install windows, but during installation using bootcamp, it says windows can't install on FAT partition. I couldn't change it to NTFS. Also how can I partition my hard disk after windows installation. Coz before windows installation, if I partition hard disk, it won't allow me to install windows saying startup disk can't be partitioned.......help would be appreciated.

Now, I wish to upgrade from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 to latest version of OS X Yosemite, but I am in doubt and worry if after upgraded to Yosemite, can I still using my Windows XP where I installed now in Mountain Lion 10.8.5 BootCamp?
Yosemite does not allow a new installation of XP, but an existing XP installation is self-contained and will continue to work. Does your XP installation use a FAT partition? You may be better off using NTFS and then upgrading to Yosemite.
Will the Yosemite upgrade process delete my Windows XP partition or crash my current BootCamp? Can I still have an option to load OS X or Windows XP (press 'alt/option' key during boot up) after upgraded to Yosemite?
If you have made any re-sizing attempts to WXP partition Yosemite will cause problems, otherwise the Yosemite upgrade leaves XP untouched.
Are there any specific reasons to upgrade to Yosemite?

I am also having this issue.  I have a Macbook Pro 13" and 15" and both have issues printing to my works Bizhub C360.  It keeps saying "the printer does not support IPP/2.0, trying IPP 1.1"  I have uninstalled and reinstalled this printer, installed the printer with an ip address, and even added the printer as a generic postscript printer to no avil.  I have OS X version 10.8.4 with the appropriate printer driver.  It will ocassionally print but only 1 out of every 5 times.  Anyone have any other ideas?

Are you talking about changing the keyboard layout when you are working in Windows?  If so, you need to tell people how you are running it (bootcamp, parallels, other) and whether you have already done stuff like

  • Can you install Windows 8.1 Pro using Parallels on a new MacBook Pro without retina display?

I am starting a graduate school program and I would like to purchase a MacBook Pro. The options for the non-retina display fit my needs best, but it sounds like the resolution requirements for Windows 8.1 Pro do not match the MacBook Pro without retina. I need Windows to run a statistics program (SAS) and ArcGIS for mapping. Any thoughts or experience installing Windows 8.1 Pro on MBP without retina?

The native res on my 13-inch non-Retina is 1280x800. You might check with Parallels support or their forums to see if this is a problem.
If you go with the non-Retina 13-inch, I'd recommend getting 8GB RAM (standard is 4GB) because Win emulators need a fair bit of memory.

  • Is the Dell 3115CN compatible with a Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion? If so, how can I install the drivers and install the printer on my mac?

I hace a Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion OS.... I need to print from time to time but don't have a new printer to go with my new macbook. Would a 3115CN work with it or no? If so, how can I set it up? Setting up a printer on a mac is a bit different from doing so on a windows machine and I am new to the macworld.
All help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. I'm running this printer from 10.6 through 10.9 and it's worked fine with all versions. Dell released updated drivers a while ago that make it much easier to administer this printer.

I bought a Macbook pro with Mountain Lion. Can I install Mountain Lion on my other mac for free? How do I do that? Thanks!

On the bright side, it's only $20.
And I would certainly like to have the ownership (and even a copy of the installer on my archive drive), "just in case."
Here are some questions -- which I cannot test because it's not my situation:
Has anyone acquired a pre-owned Mac with Mountain Lion installed but which shipped with an earlier OS version? For those in that circumstance:
Have you been able to apply Mountain Lion update(s)?

After either updating or reinstalling, does ML appear in Purchases in App Store?
