Installing windows 7 with usb 3 external disk drive crashes

So I was trying to install my windows 7 64bit onto my macbook pro. I bought an external Samsung CD/DVD RW drive to load the windows disk. However, halfway through the windows 7 install, it freezes at 65%. The most I could gather is that windows 7 doesn't have the drivers for the USB 3 ports on my mac, and therefore can't find the windows disk mid-install. Is there a way around this, maybe turning off the USB 3 abilities in some way?

nevermind turns out the install disk was flawed

You don't need to have Lightroom 3 and 4 installed on your computer to install Lightroom 5.  Just install Lightroom 5 and input your serial number for 3 in the previous version box and your serial number for 5 in the upgrade box.

  • TS1963 Migrating from Time Machine onExternal Disk,  Why won't Migration Assistant see my USB Connected external disk drive?

I had to format my internal disk drive on my MacBook Pro, and reload Mountain Lion 10.8.3.   The startup assistant could not see my external disk drive with the Time Machine backup files.  After many tries I told it to skip restoring the files and let it boot up.  I was able to see my 1 TByte external drive and could see the Time Machine files using Finder.
I started the Migration Assistant and told it to migrate from Time Machine Files on an external drive.  It also did not see the backup drive.  The only drive icon it showed was the Macintosh HD (my internal drive).
Isn't it supposed to show you the drive you are moving the files from?  I tried starting it and it looked like it was going to try to migrate the files from the internal drive (to where I don't know, back to itselfl?)  Or  do I just not understand.  Is it seeing the external drive, without identifying it (in the Migration Asst,)?
Really looks like it is going to back up  the internal HD with files that are on the internal HD and not from Time Machine.
I need to restore my files and have been told I need to do so using Migration Assistant and not Time Machine.
Help pleae and soon, need to get my taxes finished!
    Thanks!

I'm surprised that no one replied to this.  But I learned a few things that may be helpful to some of you with this same question.
When you restore data from an external disk drive with Time Machine files on it.  As you move through the dialog (in either System Startup or in the Migration Assistant) it will ask if you want to restore from an external disk with Time Machine files.  If you select this option, it will show you only one Icon.  You will expect to see your external disk drive listed as the source of the restore.  The icon that is shown will look like your ilnternal drive and will be labeled something like Macintosh HD.  That is not your internal drive, but is your backup drive.  It is labeled  the same as your internal disk drive and it is telling you that you have found the backup for your internal disk drive.
Would be nice if Apple would put a note of explanation about this as part of that dialog.  I wasted several hours trying to make it work  Finally I took a chance and selected the drive shown and it did restore my system.  I ended up with two users since I did it from Migration Assistant.  Had I done it from the System Startup, there would only be the one user.

You can copy the content of the DVD on your computer through pen drive then install the software, to copy the content on pen drive you need the computer which can read you DVD.
Or else , You can driectly download the setup on your computer from this link and use the serial number to serialize it;-

  • Can I install Windows 7 with Bootcamp without a disk

I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium when I also purchased Parallels 7.  My main objective was to use the Windows partition for games that Mac doesn't have (Everquest II for example).  I had no trouble installing Windows with Parallels but the games I want to play work very poorly on the virtual machine.  Is there any way that I can junk Parallels and install Windows using Bootcamp?  Note:  Windows was downloaded from the Parallels web site.  I am using a MacBook Pro with Lion, early 2011, Intel 2.2 GHz i7 processor with 4 GB memory.  Another 4GB memory is in the mail but hasn't arrived yet.  All software is up to date.  Another question.  Would upgrading to Mountain Lion solve the problem?  Please, if there is anyone who knows the answer, give me instructions on how to ditch Parallels for Bootcamp.  Thanks.

You can install Windows in BootCamp (it will be a fresh installation) and you can remove the existing VM installation. Windows will run faster in Boot Camp than it will in a VM (parallels is a VM).
Please note that MacBook Pro's have 2 ram slots, and they will both be occupied with a 2G chip in a standard configuraton, there will be nowhere to install the other 4G that is in the mail. Return it and order 2 x 4G chips and remove the 2 x 2G chips already fitted.

  • Installing Windows XP on Lion using external DVD drive

Hi, this is my first time posting on a forum at all, so just keep that in mind when dealing with me.
I have recently attempted to install Windows XP by partitioning my drive using the disk utility (seeing as Bootcamp no longer supports Windows XP installations). The problems start when I boot from the installation disk; an error "no bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key" occurs. I am inclined to believe that this is due to me using an external DVD drive when doing all of this. I am using an external DVD drive because my internal DVD drive has been spoilt and is no longer useable.
Does anyone have a solution for me? It seems that it is not possible to install windows using an external DVD drive.

I am doing this after doing a full wipe of my hard drive and reinstalling lion.
Previously, I had lion, and made a partition using disk utility and booted from the disk (this time it was from my Mac's SuperDrive which was functioning perfectly at this point in time) and finished the installation completely fine. I then used the drivers that were in my Snow Leopard DVD (I have a Snow Leopard DVD from a previous Mac I purchased).
The only difference between then and now is that I am using an external DVD drive.

  • Installing Windows 7 onto Mac without a disk drive

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to install Windows 7 to my mac. I've followed numerous instructions and nothing is working.
    I have:
-downloaded the windows 7 iso file
    -created a bootable usb
    -downloaded the additional drivers
-downloaded DAEMON to trick my mac into thinking a disk has been inserted
-mounted the windows 7 iso file on my mac
I then started bootcamp to install windows and it goes as far as selecting the size for each partition but when I click next it stops and won't go any further... An error message is displayed with "Your disk could not be partitioned", "An error occurred while partitioning the disk".
Is anyone able to help? I've tried almost everything !
    Thanks

    Hey.
You are doing things the way I would do them.
Double check that your ISO is good by downloading it again for good measure.
Then before running BootCamp, use Disk Utility to repair any dodgy permissions and to verify the disk.
This is always worth doing before BootCamping.
Now when you get to the dark side and it asks you to select a partition, make sure you are clicking on the "BOOTCAMP" one, which I assume you are.
Below you will see "New". Click that and all should be good.
Let me know when you've tried this.

  • Installing Windows 7 RC From and External Hard Drive?

I burned a DVD of the Windows 7 64-bit RC installer and successfully booted from the DVD. However, I hit the following error once the installer collects information about my hardware:
"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, of USB Flash Drive, Please insert it now."
I cannot proceed any further. Another discussion board noted that June 2007 Macbook Pros have had internal DVD drive problems from recent firmware upgrades. I seek an alternate installation method. (Would and external DVD reader work at boot time?)
I'm trying to make a bootable external hard drive that has the Windows 7 Installer on it. I have tried extracting the contents of the Windows 7 RC iso file, and then placing the contents in a FAT32 formatted hard drive with the GUID Partition Table. However, my mac does not recognize the drive as bootable. I believe I am missing the procedure needed to make bootcamp recognize the drive as bootable. The drive was connected by Firewire if that matters.
My computer currently runs Mac OS X Leopard and Windows XP SP2. I have no access to a machine running Windows Vista.
How can I make a bootable external hard drive containing the Windows 7 installer for my macbook pro?

You can't get there with GUID/GPT.
There are tips on making a USB flash device that is bootable.
You can set aside a small 6GB partition somewhere and put Windows 7 installer there and run it WHILE IN Windows.
Windows Vista can be upgraded in place to 7 RC.
    You'll need NTFS (30-50GB).
Windows doesn't support FW for booting.
You can create a drive that has Master Boot Record.

  • Can I install Windows XP Pro onto my external hard drive?

I have a MacBook with a 320gb Western Digital external hard drive. I also have Windows XP Pro on a disk that my college gave me.
Can I install XP Pro on my external hard drive so I can have both Mac and PC?
I have Mac OS X Leopard so I think bootcamp will let me do this.

Boot Camp will only let you install onto an internal disk. This is largely because of Windows restrictions, not Mac OS restrictions. The beta thread has some supposed approaches to let you do this, using manual steps instead of using Boot Camp Assistant.

  • Is it possible to install windows 7 on a partitioned external hard drive and then boot from windows from time to time?

I have some applications that are windows only. I want to install windows 7 on my external hard drive and boot to it when I need to use my windows applications. Is this possible with a mac and, if so, how can I do that? I have a 64-bit Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion.

    VirtualBox is free.
Besides the websites for the different products, I don't know of any.

  • Installing Windows 7 System Builder w/External Disc Drive?

I'm looking to buy Windows 7 so that I can install it on my Mac Mini (using Boot Camp) and I'm looking to buy this:

I'm wondering if the drive in the link above is able to install Windows 7 System Builder? I know there are a lot of threads and posts stating that install Windows 7 on a Mac isn't possible with an external optical disc drive. I want to install Windows 7 System Builder on my Mac Mini, but I don't know what I need to install it before I buy the Win7 System Builder install disc. Please help me. Thanks!

Hi, I'm not sure what system builder is, but I believe Win 7 can be installed from an external drive or even a Flash Drive.
I wonder if you might get a better answer over here...

  • Blank screen when installing Windows 7 with Boot Camp - Mac Mini 2011

I'm new to the Mac scene, having barely any knowledge on the OS.
I've been trying to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp on my new Mac Mini (Latest offering from Apple).
I have an External DVD Drive which I have been using, connected via two USB's to the back of the Mac Mini itself. It's fully functioning, with the Mac recognizing the Drive. I've used it for some CD's and DVD's so far.
I have a full, licensed copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, bought from the Microsoft Store on a DVD. There's both a 64bit and 32bit DVD, of which I have tried both to install Windows 7.
I've been through the Boot Camp Assistant software, un ticking both the "Create a Windows 7 install disk" and "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" because I already have the Windows 7 install disk. I've had troubles downloading the Windows support software from Apple, as it just stops about 1/4 of the download for no apparent reason.
So once I've made the partition, I insert the Windows 7 DVD into the External Disk Drive, and it reboots. At first it looks like the Disk Drive is working, as you can hear the Disk movement and a blue light on the front of the Disk Drive... But then the screen goes blank, and the Disk stops spinning (from what I can tell). Nothing else happens from then on.
Is there any reason as to why this is happening?
    Thanks, Dominic

Yes. Booting from a USB-DVD to install Windows
The MacBook Air has extra drivers. Some people have edited the script preference plist to add their model Not all USB DVD devices may or may not work.
Burning electronic versions like an ISO or in .exe format you will see threads where that is the issue.
