Installing windows to bootcamp: "error loading operating system"

It doesn't matter whether I'm trying to install windows 7 or XP sp2 or XP sp3. I get the same Error. I've tried different CDs for each flavor too. (I believe in backup!) These are NOT bootlegged so that is not the issue.
I have a 1.66MHz Macmini core duo with 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. The Superdrive seems to work as I was able to burn an ISO to CD earlier today with no problems. I don't know what else to check.
Has anyone else had this problem? or maybe have any ideas of what I can try further? Any help would be appreciated.  I usually don't need windows, but my Will software is PC and I need to update my paperwork.
Thanks,
Kayo

If you don't have the Operating system CD
try to repair OS or choose last known good configuration
update your BIOS (bit risky)
a few restart sometimes help

  • "Error loading operating system" in windows 7 bootcamp

Hello, Im trying to boot up my windows 7 and its giving me "Error loading operating system". But the wierd thing is from Mac OS X i can access my bootcamp without any problem "browsing it", all my music is on it actually. Any solutions guys?

    Hi guys,
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am suddenly having a very similar problem and maybe one of you can help me.  I have searched the problem using many different phrases but have not found a solution to my specific issue anywhere so I turned here.
Problem : I am getting the "Error Loading Operating System" error on the windows side after trying to boot up using BootCamp.
More Info / History :  Everything was running fine until I updated OSX to 10.10.02.  I have an unsupported card with no EFI : GTX 980 so I couldn't tell what was going on with the update but it just hung in black screen for a while and then when into an infinite restart-loop.  Sooooo, I pulled the card and put my old GTX 120 with EFI back in to see what the **** was going on and miraculously it decided to finish the update.  (Maybe it had something to do with the unsupported card? IDK)  The update finished successfully after i swapped out the cards but I fear i screwed up something by restarting during the update (I was hung up, I waited a very long time before hitting the power button).  OSX is running ok, I put the other card back in and it is working ok now, but...  BootCamp was working...  once.  Then I restarted and it wouldn't work, I got the error message.  So I tried doing a verify/repair disk on both drives, OSX and W7, and that didn't do anything, so I tried to start BootCamp assistant and I couldn't...  So I reset the PRAM and that fixed the problem with BootCamp Assistant, so now that starts up, but I don't know if I can repair the issue with it?  However I still can't boot into Windows.  Again, when I hold down option on boot, I do get the menu (BootCamp?) to choose which OS to go into.  Side Note, when I pick Recovery Mode from that menu, I get the mac error message and it restarts.
All the W7 Files are still present on the drive...  Is there any way I can back up the image, re-prep the drive for BootCamp and re-image it to repair it?  All thoughts, suggestions, etc. welcome.
    Hardware:
    • Upgraded 2009 Hex-Core Mac Pro flashed to 2010
    • OWC PCIE SSD - OSX 10.2.2 installed here
    • nVidia GTX 980 - EVGA
    • 1TB HDD - 1 Partition - Windows 7 installed here (Bootcamp)

  • Error loading operating system (windows 7)

    Macbook pro 8,2 (early 2011)
Samsung SSD 850 evo primary drive
OWC electra 3G secondary drive in place of the original DVD drive (with disk doubler).
My original HDD was removed for the two SSD configuration.
It contains two partition (OS X and Win 7 pro) and everything works fine.
I use Winclone to clone Win 7 partition to the new OWC drive.
My OS X partition was placed on the primary Samsung drive.
    OS X works fine.
Win 7 works fine when i use Parallels Desktop (virtualization).
But when i try to boot with Win 7, i have the " error loading operating system" black screen.
I cannot repair Win 7 with the installation disc because when i try to boot with the DVD, i have à black screen with a white cursor and nothing happend. (original DVD drive is used in usb, inside a dedicated external cradle).

Thank you for your help !

You are creating a new protective MBR, not a Hybrid MBR. A protective MBR encapsulates the disk into a single entry the size of the disk so legacy partitioning tools leave it untouched to 'protect' the GPT.
In your case, since disk1 has only two partitions, GPT1 and GPT2, you should have two entries.
Here is an example, where GPT3, 4 and 5 are hybridized.
Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR.
Use defaults for other questions (for example Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): AF).
    Sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
    P  (Print list of parts)
    R   (Recover)
    H (chooses Hybrid)
Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 3 4 5
    Y (Good for GRUB question)
    N (part 3 boot flag)
    N (part 4 boot flag)
Y  (part 5 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
P  (Print list of parts again)
    W  (Write the new MBR)
Y    (Yes! write the new MBR)
    Reboot
Please ensure that the following questions get appropriate defaults or correct values for the MBR hex codes as suggested by Gdisk. These are examples using a standard, your partition numbers will have a differential of 1. Given the prior Gdisk steps, your mapping will look as follows
GPT1+2 (EFI+OSX) = MBR1 (You lose read visibility to OSX from Windows).
    GPT3 = MBR2 (Recovery HD).
    GPT4 (Shareddisk) = MBR3 (Shareddisk)
GPT5 (Bootcamp) = MBR4 (Bootcamp - This should be made bootable).
You can create variants of which partitions get mapped to which MBR). If you use 2 4 5, then Recovery will look like Free Disk space to Windows and can be corrupted. If you use 4 5, then EFI+OSX+Recovery HD will end up in MBR1. Try and see which works the best for you. In this configuration, I would also recommend not using any third-party NTFS tools.
The following is an example for 2 3 4
Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)
Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): AF
Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): n
Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)
Enter an MBR hex code (default AB): AB
Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): n
Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #4)
Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): 07
Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): y
In your case the steps will become...
    Sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
    P  (Print list of parts)
    R   (Recover)
    H (chooses Hybrid)
Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2
    Y (Good for GRUB question)
Y  (part 2 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
P  (Print list of parts again)
    W  (Write the new MBR)
Y    (Yes! write the new MBR)
    Reboot
After the reboot, check the output of sudo fdisk /dev/disk0.

  • T61: "Error loading operating system" after reboot with Windows XP SR3

So here is my problem:  Occasionally, after reboot I get "Error loading operating system" right after the Lenovo screen (the one where you can press ThinkVantage button). After that the only thing I can do is shut down the computer and fix the windows boot (see bellow…). I'm running Windows XP SR3, clean install.
I've had my T61 for 6 months now and I've had this problem about 8 times so far. Obviously this makes my T61 unstable and is becoming a major problem (I like to shut down the computer before taking it anywhere, and I don't really use Hibernate).
Solving the boot is very easy and takes 3 minutes… But the Win XP CD is needed for the fix and I don't want to carry it around with me everywhere. And anyway this is annoying and makes my T61 crippled…
    To fix the problem:
1 Change AHCI -> Compatibility in BIOS.
2 Boot using the Windows XP CD.
3 Enter the Recovery Console (press R).
4 Use "fixboot" to write a new boot sector.
    5 Restart ("exit").
6 Change back to AHCI in Bios.
After that the computer works perfect until the next time… Things I have tried so far:
1 Installed latest Bios for T61.
2 Checked firmware for HD (WD Scorpio WD1600BEVS) and it's the latest.
3 Installed all windows updates for Windows XP.
4 Installed all latest drivers for T61 (specifically checked the Intel Matrix Storage Driver and it's the latest).
5 Checked computer for Viruses, malware, etc. with a few scanners. It's clean.
6 Updated some of the programs that I thought might be causing problems: Avira , PerfectDisk 2008, TrueImage Home…
7 Checked HD with WD Diagnostics tools
I am out of ideas. Something is corrupting the boot sector occasionally when I shut down the system. But I can't find why or under  what circumstances it happens… The only thing I didn't try was a completely new clean system install, a thing which I REALLY don't want to do. Except for this problem the system is great, very stable and I'm very happy with it.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I run the windows version of TestDisk. Is there any specific reason for me to make a Live CD? It seems to work just fine in windows. Anyway, I run all the analysis tests with it. It did NOT find any problems. Is there some specific test I should run?
Some further testing has shown me that the problem happens sometime during using windows and not upon restarting... When it does happen I can no longer use chkdsk - it gives the following error message:
"The type of the filesystem is RAW.
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives."
    Some other things I tried:
    - I've pretty much ruled out physical HD problems (I checked the HD with PC Doctor, WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool and chkdsk - no problems). And the HD shows no symptoms of failure (no noises or any other problems).
    - Ruled out boot-sector Viruses (cheked the computer with 4 different antiviruses - Avira,AVG, Kaspersky and NOD32).
    - Manually checked the boot.ini file - no problems.
    - I have also found while googling that the problem might have to do with a registry entry concerning HDs bigger then 137gb. I double checked that entry and it's fine.
    - Tried both fixmbr and fixboot, alone and together - windows boots, but the problem comes back again after a few hours/days...
    Things I'm trying now:
    - Reinstalled the Intel Matrix Storage Drivers (before I just checked that they are the latest).
    - Disabled the Active Protection System (I am shooting in the dark...).
I am getting pretty desperate here.

I then realised that my computer's operating system is windows millenium edition, which i havs the recovery cd for. i could use this, but id lose all my data. i was wondering if there was a way to save or transfer all my files to a different hard drive. Or if there was a way to use the recovery cd to repair everything without me losing all my personal files, or would this not work because it would be windows me that is reinstalled and not xp?

Wow! Your PC is almost as old as my  (1996) Compaq 14XL244 Notebook.
It still works, but required hard disk replacement about six years ago.  I suspect you will have a very hard time getting any files from your IDE hard disk. You can try putting the hard disk in an external enclosure and connecting it via USB to another PC.
The error message that you are seeing means that the BIOS can no longer recognize the hard dive.
It is probably time to consider updating to a more recent PC. You certainly got plenty of good service life from it.
    Kind regards,
    erico

  • [Solved] Error loading operating system (USB install, unetbootin)

    Hi!
I was planning on reinstalling Arch on my netbook (Asus EEE T91MT), because I messed it up a bit too far.
It still boots fine and I can log in on the console, but I can not move the mouse in xserver/xfce, wifi stopped working, and I have various other problems and errors when running commands, so I figured a reinstall would be easier.
Now I followed the same steps as last time: put arch x86 netinstall on an empty 2GB FAT32 USB stick, using the Unetbootin tool.
But when I boot from USB (press escape during boot, select the USB drive instead of SSD, press enter), it just gives me a black screen with the text:
    Error loading operating system
When I look on the USB stick, it looks very normal, like an arch install medium usually looks.
Thanks for any tips in advance!

    Ah, thanks a lot!
I'll be more careful in trusting tools like unetbootin. It even clearly says on the website "arch up to 2010.05"...
Gonna try one of the alternative methods.

loading operating system.  Any idea why this is?

    Hi KirkSH,
I am assuming that you are using SCVMM to achieve P2V .
And the following article indicated that server pack2 is required to install into
server2003 when you try to do P2V :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh427293.aspx
Also it is recommended to use windows server 2003 with sp2 as a VM  in hype-v 2008/R2 and hyper-v 2012/R2 .

  • Boot Camp "Error loading operating system" error

When I try to boot into Windows XP via boot camp I get "Error loading operating system"
The partition still works fine with VMWare.
    Any suggestions?

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & Windows, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
    The Forums are at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology. Here is a link;

  • Neo2 "Error Loading Operating System" solved

hi, i've been struggling with this frikkin error for a while now and i've finally figured it out, after reading a gazillion posts and not finding an answer i thought i should post mine here for anyone who gets the same problem
my setup: msi k8n neo2 platinum, amd 64 3500, some ram and vid card, 200GB SATA drive
PLUG YOUR SATA DRIVE INTO SATA3or4 if you only have one or two, SATA1and2 are unstable(for ocing) and just dont work for some folks
now you boot from windows xp cd, everything seems to be goin fine, pc reboots and BHAM! error loading operating system... ?!
well don't go and enable RAID in your bios (unless you really want to use RAID) just goto the bios --> integrated peripherals --> IDE function setup
now look for SATA1/SATA2 DMA transfer and SATA3/SATA4 DMA transfer, enable these, or at least the one that you're using
reboot, boot from windows cd, quick format the partition you want to install windows on, do the windows thing and reboot, viola! your windows installation should now be booting
if that doesn't solve your problem then i'm a greased weasel!
ps. another solution (that i used the first time round but annoyed me cos i'm really really obsessive about these things) is to run partition magic and clear the drive of partitions, then make a primary partition and a logical drive within that partition and set it to active, this worked for me
xcept i only use 1 HDD with two partitions, a smaller one that gets formatted all the time and off of which i run windows and a larger one that i keep all my stuff on, the trick was the put the booting partition at the end of the disk and not at the beginning like you usually would do, it's got something to do with the 1024 cylinder boundary but i don't understand that tho...

I had the same problem, easy solution, use Nforce 6.37 beta driver pack. and It will work OK! A way to enter the system is:
That is a probelm with SATA drivers, you may also install WIN XP making a disk for SATA driver from the Nforce 6.37 drivers in IDE\WINXP
    Press F8,
    Wait about 10 Secs.
    Enter Normally, It may boot.
    Regards
You may connect the SATA drive in either 1 - 2 or 3 - 4 Sata ports It will work OK, do not use DMA transfer it will make the Disk slower

  • Error loading operating system after installation of Linux AS4

    Hi,
I have Hardware HP DL580 G3 server attached with SAN.
I just installed Linux AS4, installation went fine and successufly installed, upon rebooting of server it is giving following error.
    attempting from Hard Drive (C:)
    Error Loading Operating system
    Please help me out

First: did you install the bootloader in the MBR (it's a question during the installation), so the server is able to boot linux automatically?
"C:" is a typical MSDOS naming (and windows naming), which probably means the dos/windows bootloader is still in the MBR (master boot record)
If not, reinstall linux and install grub (preferably) in the MBR

  • Error Loading Operating System WinXP

Here is the problem, I used to have Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer and it ran fine. I then restored a Windows XP image made by Clonezilla. It restored fine w/o error, but now when I try to boot into Windows, it gives me "Error Loading Operating System" and doesn't go anywhere from there. I have tried to do a repair install with no prevail. I have also tried to fix the MBR, Boot.ini, ran CHKDSK /R (Using install cd), and nothing seems to help. Since Macs use EFI, the other tutorial online really can't help. There is important programs that can only be installed a number of times that I need (why I cloned and not clean installed). Can anyone give me some advice?

    Hi,
I am not familiar with Clonezilla but it might be better to ask in the Clonezilla Forum http://clonezilla.org/forum/
    Regards

  • "Error Loading Operating System" Message on startup. Need Help~~

    Hi Peoples,
I got the "Error Loading Operating System" message when restarting widows. Been pulling my hairs off the past few days looking for solutions, but with no dice. anyone have a solution??
I think the problem occurred when my computer got crashed, so I forced to turn off the computer buy hitting the power button, the next time I started the computer and it gives me a "Error Loading Operating system".
I have tried the recommendation from Microsoft by updated the bios. Didn't work.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326676
Other solutions that recommended from varied resources, recommanding to set the drive from LBA to Large. But I don't see that option in the Bios setup.. maybe because my HD's was setup as RAID 0?
and other recommended to use a startup disk boot into DOS and use the  fixboot/mbr to fix the mbr. But when I tried to boot with a startup disk I can't seems to find my C:\  (which is the RAID 0). How can can boot to the into the RAID?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Specs of my computer
    CPU: P4 3.0
    Mother Board: 875P Neo-LSR/
Graphic Card: Nvidia Quadro FX 1000
    Memory: 2 GB
HD: 2X 80 Seagate SATA Drive Configured as RAID 0

Hey Stu, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I think the bios is configured correctly and the Raid is configured as the way it use to be.
About the crashed, last time when I shutted down widow, using the Shut down button in the Start Menu, Window got got freezed and the power is still on, due to frustration I hit the Power button to turn off the computer, the next day I turn on the computer, and it gives me the error message.

PS: Is there a way to boot into the C: (Raid 0 drive) Using Dos? or maybe I can check the files is still in C drive? If the files are there, means the drives are OK? and Maybe I can use the "Fixboot" the problem? Please advise, again thanks for your help.
