Installing windows with 2 3TB Seagate drives in raid 0

Hi there, I have a MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard that I just recently purchased. As part of my upgrade I also got 2 Seagate 3TB drives to put into Raid 0 to function as my boot drive.
I'm unable to figure out how to get windows installed. I Setup the raid array under legacy mode to configure the array and then set it to start the array using the "UEFI driver". After that I set the boot priority so that it boots into the EFI shell. I selected my DVD-ROM drive that had the windows 7 x64 install disk and the BOOTX64.EFI file from the shell. From there I booted the install disk and used the amd raid driver from the msi motherboard page then followed the prompts until I got to unallocated space then hit next. At that point it just comes up saying it couldn't format the disk and gives an error code.
Everything in the manual for the motherboard points to it supporting booting from a GPT drive but I'm unable to get it to work. Maybe it doesn't support booting while in raid?
Here are the system spec's
OS: Windows 7 Pro x64
CPU: AMD FX-8320
MOtherboard: MSI 990FXA-GD80
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz
GPU: Nvidia 660 Ti x3 SLi
Hard Drives: 2x Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 3TB 7200rpm Raid 0 4k sectors with 64KB strips

If you are installing in UEFI mode for win 8 don't use Legacy. You will create the raid array inside uefi bios. Then boot to your install media in win 8 mode, i find it helpful to use a usb stick for the install media and also include all raid drivers on the stick. Load the newest drivers using f6.
The VD may need to be reformated using diskpart to GPT for this to work in Win 8 mode. (I haven't tried this in raid mode myself)
Here is a guide if you need such.

  • Installing windows and booting from external drive

I just got a Seagate 250gb external drive. I only have cords to connect it to my I-mac with usb cords from its dock but the drive itself has a firewire port. What i want to do is install windows xp onto the seagate drive so the drive can stay Windows formatted and my mac drive can stay mac formatted so both OS's will run at peak efficiency. The only reason i want to be able to boot up from the drive is so i can use my I-macs hardware but be able to play my PC games in its windows OS.
    How do i accomplish this?

Assuming it's an Intel iMac since you're installing Windows®, Intel Macs can boot off of USB, but...
USB2 is slow compared to Firewire/400 even, about 1/2 to 2/3rds the spedd, so FW would be better.

  • How to install Windows 7 on new hard drive?

I have changed the old hard drive (500 gb) with a new hard dirve (1 Tera), and now I have two problems: -
    1. How do I install Windows 7 on new hard drive?
    2. My laptop was pre-installed Windows 7 Pro, but all the DVD kit (Application & Drives Recivery Disc + Operating System Revocer), which was provided (by Lenovo) for the laptop is in the Windows 8 Pro. So how do I install Windows 7 Pro, in my laptop while all DVD kits are in Windows 8 Pro?
by the way this is my laptop spec (for reference) ; -
    * Note *
I plan to install Windows 7 Pro in my new hard drive using another Windows 7 DVD (Not DVD provided by Lenovo), but how do I get all the Leveno program which found within the 'Application & Drives Recivery' disc (such as ; - Lenovo System Health and Diagnostics, Lenovo Power Control,Lenovo's Fingerprint Reader) to install in that hard drive? (as I tell you before, all the DVD kit is in or only for Windows 8 Pro)
I hope somebody will help me answer my question,
    Thank You
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I got the solution;
Answer to question 1 ; using a backup & recovery software to clone my current OS, then transfer to my new hard drive.
Answer to question 2 ; download all the Drivers and software ( all the application that located on the DVD kit that I have) on Lenovo Official Website.
or other solution, send it to a computer service shop and let the experts ( the workers) install it for me ( the most simple and safe way).

  • How to install Windows 7 from a USB drive!

This is even easier than installing Windows XP from a USB drive, and will also reduce the time taken to install Windows 7, it took me about 15 minutes!
The advice in the guide is also applicable to installing Vista.
    You need basically:
a USB flash drive at least 4GB in size
    a Windows 7 DVD
    To sum up:
Format your USB drive, with the NTFS filesystem
Open Command Prompt as an administrator, and run the Bootsect.exe program off the Windows 7 CD to make the USB drive bootable
Copy the contents of the Windows 7 DVD to the USB drive
Restart your PC, press F11 (or whichever key it is) to access the Boot menu, and select your USB drive to boot from

I have done this and it is simple.
I cleaned and (re)formated an 8GB flash drive under Windows7 using diskpart.  I chose quick format and a fat filesystem.  It doesn't need to be ntfs.  I had diskpart mark the partition active.  I copied the DVD contents to the flash drive.  I also made a folder on it for motherboard drivers.
After that, I booted the drive on a new machine.  Windows7 setup came up, and didn't find any hard drives, other than the USB flash drive.  I clicked the button to load drivers, and pointed it to the folder I had copied them to on the flash.  Windows installed without problems.
Hi bnborg..Do u mind sharing with me your motherboard driver folder? I have the MSI U135DX Netbook and each time I hit the button to install Windows 7 it asks me for some mobo driver...Think i might need it to get tru with a successful install..

    Hi,
Is it possilbe to install Windows 7 in an external drive using Boot Camp?  If yes, can you someone show me or direct me where I can find more info?
    Thanks a lot

    You're welcome anytime.
Microsoft doesn't make it easy sometimes
As for the harddisk it surely is possible.

  • Installing Windows from an external optical drive?

My superdrive recently died, and I replaced it with an external drive that's been able to read and burn everything I need it to without a problem, including using it to install Snow Leopard.
I tried to use it to install Windows (Vista Home Premium, if that matters) with Boot Camp, but when it comes to starting the actual installation, the computer doesn't seem to see the drive at all. It will start up, with the chime and the grey startup screen, but that's as far as it gets. It will stay on that screen until I restart it and go back into the Mac partition by pressing option at startup.
Is there a way to make it boot to the Windows disc in the external drive? Failing that, is there a way to use Boot Camp successfully with a non-disk source, like an external hard drive or flash drive with the Windows data on it? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    The Hatter:
Thanks for your reply. My purpose is temporary and to document the process of installing Windows in to a Boot Camp partition on a system that does not have an internal Optical drive.
I did this succesfully using bits of information from three documents. I want to go through the process again, this time documenting my steps for the benefit of others and me in the future. You may or maynot know, installing Windows with Boot Camp without an INTERNAL optical drive is difficult and require a hack using Parallels, copying the VM MBR, etc.
I should have documented it the first time but I doubted if it would work.
So, I want a second BC partition, on my second internal drive without touching my working BC patrition on the SSD.
    Make more sense?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Does anybody knows how to install Windows 7 from a USB drive on 2010 MacBook Air running Lion?

Does anybody knows how to install Windows 7 from a USB drive on 2010 MacBook Air running Lion?

    Tell my wife that!
This is the best I can do. This way you can use the 2011 MBA way to do things.
Look for the post from @jacktourist. (on page 2 about half way down) This seems to be the easiest.
There are a couple of more similar to this with pictures I've seen around but can't remember where.
Here's another search with added info. It's easier then it sounds.

  • Install Windows XP on External Hard Drive

Is there anyway I can install Windows XP on my WD 500GB External HD? It serves as my Time Machine for my MacBook, which doesn't have a whole lot of HDD space left. I'd like to install XP and be able to run it on my Mac, but it takes up way to much space.
If I can't install XP to my external drive, is there any suggestions for clearing space on my MacBook? Any way to remove unwanted applications?

I don't quite understand your answer, or maybe you don't quite understand my question. Here are a little more details.
I have an Early 2008 Macbook with a 160GB HDD with Tiger installed.
For BootCamp you need OSX Leopard since the BootCamp Beta from OSX Tiger no longer works.
I'm interested in running Windows XP on my MacBook, but I'm concerned with it taking up space on my already small HDD. However, I do have a 500GB external HDD that I have plenty of space on.
My question remains, is there anyway that I could install Windows XP on my external drive while keeping Leopard on my laptop HDD. Would I be able to use BootCamp to assist me. If not, how would I access/boot XP?
See my first post. Windows is not intended to be booted of an external harddisk.
This is prevented by Microsoft and BootCamp can not change this.
Windows XP itself needs about 10GB of harddisk space. Add to that the amount of disk space that will be used y the Windows programs you want to run plus the space used by the data files.
So something about 20-25GB for Windows might be sufficient.
How much free disk space do you have right now ?
What is 'eating' up your disk space ?
I know these are several questions, and difficult ones at that, but I believe there is an answer somewhere.
The answer is given, but the technical limitations of Windows prevent the answer from being what you want to hear.

  • H8-1240ef - installing Windows 7 on a ssd drive

    Hi,
    I have a HPE h8-1240ef with a 1 TB SATA III drive.
I would like to add a 64 GBytes SSD SATAIII Drive in order to install Windows 7 on it , to increase performances.
Since we do not have a "Windows 7 installation CD" with the HP machine, I do not know how to install Windows 7 on the SSD drive and swap the bootable volume, to have the SSD Drive viewed as C: Drive.
    Many thanks for your help

    Hey Grboutin,
You will need recovery discs to recover the system. But you will need a 160GB SSD as the minimum size to recover the system using recovery discs.
You can create the recovery discs on your PC, just type in Recovery in the start menu and Recovery Manager should show up. Follow the instructions to create the recovery media either on DVD or a thumb-drive.
    here is a link.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01867124&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&ju...
but - the key is - ANY SSD will not work, you HAVE to have a 160GB or larger to recover to. Otherwise you will need to purchase a retail version of windows.
    good luck

  • Problem installing windows on a secondary hard drive

    Hi,
Here's my issue (sorry for my english, I'm french):
-I have a macbook pro 15" with OSx Mavericks.
-I have a SDD harddrive PLUS a 500GO HDD connected to the optical slot.
I want to install windows on my secondary hard drive.
What I have done so far:
-I've cloned my older windows partition.
-I've created a bootcamp partition on my secondary HDD.
-I've restaured my clone to the new bootcamp partition on that secondary HDD.
Up to that point, everything seemed alright.
BUT when I try to boot on the windows partition, I get this message:
no bootable device insert boot disk and press any key
As if my MBP couldn't boot on a secondary hard drive.
I've looked for answers on this forum but didn"t find anything.
    thanks,
    m

The only difference between your setup and mine is that I have the SSD in the optical slot and the windows image is on my HD. I boot from the optical slot though, as all my regular Mac stuff is on the SSD. All I can think to do is use Bootcamp to delete the partition and try again. It sure seems like it should work.
