Installing Windows XP from Old PC Hard Drive Without Installation CD???

Hi,
Let me first say I'm a brand new mac user and loving my new macbook pro. A major issue I'm having is that I'm in real estate and can't use my online MLS System without running Windows. I hooked up my old IDE hard drive via USB 2.0 adapter thinking I could run bootcamp and find the necessary installation files from the old hardrive. It looks like bootcamp will only let me install via a CD or DVD. I don't have the original Windows CD. Any thoughts from anyone? Please keep in mind I only know the very basics and don't understand technical computerese talk. Thanks!!!

Darn, no such luck. I get about half of it, but all the java stuff doesn't show up. Bummer

I may go routing through my storage and try to find an old Windows 2000 installation CD.

  • Install Windows 7 FROM an external hard drive

    Hello everyone,
I was just wondering if it is possible too install windows 7 using boot camp from a 250GB external hard drive. I have a bootable image of windows 7 on my Macbook Pro, but want to know if its possible to install before I try.

    Hi,
    The simple answer is "No".
Have a look at this post ((http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12308829&#12308829) for a short answer.
Best bet in getting started with bootcamp is first to read through the "Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide" (http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup10.6.pdf)
Will probably want to look / post on the "Apple Discussions: Category : Boot Camp" (http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237) if you have further questions - more for bootcamp.
    Hope this helps.

    padman215, welcome to the forum,
you need to boot from the Rescue and Recovery cd and select to recover the system and then to recover to factory state. It will then eventually ask for the other discs.
Please be sure that you read the messages carefully; if it asks for a supplementary disc, (which you don't seem to have), you need to click on "no" should it ask for one - this throws alot of people.
    Happy installing

  • Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive

Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive. I already know that you can partition the internal hard drive to do the very same. Idon't want to use any of the internal space to run windows so I'm asking if it is possible to use a flash drive or external drive through USB to run windows when it is plugged in.

Read https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5043762?start=0&tstart=0 to discover you can't do it.

  • Will my MacPro be safe if I install Windows 7 on a separate hard drive?

I have a MacPro desktop with two hard drives: the first has my programs, the second is a dedicated media drive where i store all my media for my FInal Cut Pro and Motion projects.
I bought a third hard drive that I plan to dedicate as my PC hard drive. If I install Windows 7 on this third hard drive, is there any danger that my mac computer could become infected with viruses.
I figured I could partitition my drive. But I thought it would be safer if I just bought a separate hard drive altogether and stored nothing but Windows 7 and Windows-compatible programs on the third hard drive.
But if an internet virus infects my PC hard drive, could my entire MacPro desktop be at risk?
Thanks very much in advance for any advice and help,
    - Nick

No, Mac OS drives etc should be fine.
Pull your OS X drives while you install 7.
Use MS Security Essentials, excellent, but also use "common sense."
    So more reading.

  • How to load files from old external hard drive to new PC

Copied files from old PC (Windows XP) to external hard drive. Purchased new PC (Windows 7). Paid technicians to transfer files from old PC to new PC. Some files were lost in the process.
Please walk me through (step by step) on how to load spicific files from an external hard drive onto my new PC.
    Thanx, rp1

Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus are displayed at the top of the screen.
    Click Go > Network
Double click the Time Capsule icon, then double click the icon representing the drive to mount it on the Mac's desktop. It is named "Data" unless you have changed it
You can drag/drop files to the "Data" icon on the desktop
235 GB is going to take forever if you try to do this using wireless. If at all possible, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
Even using Ethernet, you are probably looking at 10-12 hours for the file transfer.  All bets are off with wireless only, but a guess would be several days....or even more.

  • How can I re-install CS2 upgrade on a new hard drive without serial no. of previous Photoshop 5?

A new hard drive has been installed on my G4 Mac with OS10.4. I am trying to re-install CS2 Premium on the new hard drive but I no longer have the serial number of my previous Photoshop 5. I need to enter this as the CS2 was an upgrade. I have spoken to Adobe technical support but they no longer support CS2 so are not able to help. They recommended that I try the Adbe Forum. All my Adobe products have been bought legitimately. I know people manage to use pirated Adobe software so there must be some way for me to activate a legally bought product.

    Michael
Thank you for your email and suggestion.
I have tried that and the only product listed is my CS5 Design Premium (which was an upgrade), none of my previous Adobe products are listed.
I am now looking to see if I can buy an old version of Photoshop that will work on a Power PC G4 Mac with OS 10.4.
I only need Photoshop on that Mac to paint from, not the rest of the Suite.
It is infuriating that I already have a legitimately bought Adobe product (as all mine have been) but I am unable to use it.
    Regards
    Trevor

  • How do I transfer data to my mac from a portable hard drive without getting error 36?

I keep getting error 36 when I try to transfer data from my portable hard drive it says unable to read file :-(

Hi, that -36 error can be 2 different things...
For error -36, might try this...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301580
If the drive is Fat32 it can also be caused by Too many files/folders at root of the drive, files over 2-4 GB in Size, or bad characters for DOS.
Well, in pure Apple File System talk... -36            ioErr            I/O error (bummers)
Not very helpful, but generally means a Drive quit being Readable or Writable since starting the operation...
    http://fuzzy.wordpress.com/2006/12/10/ioerror-36/
Can also be caused by faulty drives or PSUs on the external.
Even possilbe you have Disk errors on the Internal drive.

  • Remove windows Installation from Old WD hard drive and Install Fresh Copy on the New One.

Hi Community! I just bought a new WD Blue 1 TB hard drive, my old hard drive is WD Blue caviar 500 GB, running on Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit.
There are two things I wish to do: 1. Firstly, if it's possible, I would like to copy some videos, images, music etc. from my OLD Drive to the new one.
Please note that, I don't have an external disk to do it, I know that would've been less complicated, but that's not an option at this point. 2. Secondly, once that is done, if possible, I want to remove windows 7 installation from my old hard drive, re-partition it to make it just the storage drive, and finally install
fresh copy of windows 7- 64 bit to the new Hard drive.
Please note that, my old Hard drive is installed on windows 7- 32 bit and now I want to install a fresh copy of Windows 7-64bit instead of 32bit, because I am upgrading my
    configuration with better ones.
I am adding 4 GB corsair vengeance ram to my 2 GB corsair ram, so that is 6 GB in total.
I am adding 1 TB hard disk to my 500 GB Hard disk, so that is 1500 GB.
Both my processor and mother board supports 64 bit.
Intel® Pentium® Processor G2020 (3M Cache, 2.90 GHz) And this Mother board - "Biostar H61MGV3"I know that you could clone the partition and migrate the installation from one hard drive to another using the Acronis True Image WD Edition Software, but I don't want that.
In simple words, say I have a dos computer, I installed my 1TB WD hard drive, installed a fresh copy of windows 7-64bit. So my computer is up and running. Now, I have another hard
drive which I wish to use, that is 500GB WD, but it has Windows 7-32 bit installed in it.
So what I want to do is, make this old hard drive a complete 500 gb storage device and remove the windows installation from it, without loosing music, videos, etc. and then lastly
copying the music and other media to the new hard drive, and formatting it completely.
I am perhaps making this very complicated, I know you would have better easier solution for this.
I am frustrated, your help would be appreciated, thanks a lot. Sincerely, Abe

Since you don't want to clone the drive (I agree with you), you can just swap drives and install Windows on the new drive. Windows won't complain that you are installing on a different drive because it only cares if you change more than one piece of hardware at a time. The problem will arise when you copy the files from the old drive because you cannot just connect it via SATA. That would confuse Windows, as both installations were run on that hardware. You need to mount it in an external dock via USB 2.0/3.0 which will isolate the details of the OS. After you copy all necessary files, you can use WDC Lifeguard to write zeros to the entire disk and then create a new partition. After that you can mount it via SATA because it will be a new drive. Do NOT be in a hurry to wipe the drive however, as you don't want to forget something.

  • Can I install windows 7 on a potable Hard Drive using boot camp? or any other way to do so?? need help for college please

I need to use windows in order to use Visual C++ for college but I don't have enough space in my internal Hard Drive so I want to install windows 7using boot camp or any other method on a portable hard drive and boot from it.
Please help I need it as soon as possible for school. Thanks

You can't boot Windows natively except on internal drives.
You can use a VM and put the VM image (VHD) anywhere any drive you want.
You are way too low on disk space, seriously so. And no room - even Windows and Mac OS should be warning and balking already.
"emulator" is an old-school term, even true, running a Guest OS under Mac's as a virtual machine, shared resources (RAM, processor) is easier but not the same performance level as running natively.

  • Moving ps from old computer hard drive OS XP to new computer OS WIn7

Please see the attached doc file. If I have not posted this in the right place please advise me as to it has been posted
    Thank you.

The doc was clean, but the OP should have copied and pasted the contents, they are very short: This is the content
I have purchase a new computer with Windows 7  for the operating system. I have the old computer’s hard drive which I plan to connect up to the new computer as an external hard drive. The old computer’s OS is Windows XP. Photoshop V6 and updated to Photoshop CS2 are properly installed on the old computer’s hard drive. How do I go about moving / transferring Photoshop to the new computer from the hard drive of the old computer?  Due to OS installation problems on the new computer I have lost the 2nd install of PS v6 from the install CD, also there is a 30 trial of PS CS2 on the hard drive of the new computer. I have the installation  CDs and key numbers for both v6 and  CS2. Also see  TS case 181364257. Would software such as “Magical Jelly Bean “be of any use in making this transfer?
The answer is, you should have deactivated CS2 and then re-installed on the new computer. It appears you did not, so phone Adobe Customer Service to have the activations re-set.
