Installing Windows XP on M400 without original CD and without floppy drive!

Hello,
I bought Portege M400 without any CD-ROM, only with product key. Iam having difficultied installing Windows XP tablet edition 2005 SP2 while it is asking for Sata driver.
I managed to create installation disc with the driver (kr10i.sys from ts3raidx.exe) included so that installation can see the harddisk and first installation step is successful.
But after first restart Iam getting STOP message 0x0000007B (apparently means Inaccessible Boot Device - but I can't see the message).
Iam not sure about a few thinks:
1) Exact model of my laptop. At the bottom is only label Toshiba Portege M400. But I have CPU T5600 1,66Ghz (or 5500 not sure now) which I can't find in any specs so that Iam not sure if Iam using proper Sata driver.
2) The way I included driver into WinXP installation. I did that according to this article http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1703&page=1 but skipping unattended installation things.
I tried also Kr10n driver but it does not works at all. Even first step of installation wasn't successful. The Disk cannot be seen.
Could anyone help me please?
Can I download the original installation CD from anywhere?
Thanks a lot!
Petr Varadinov (CZE)

Hi, I am having the same problem.
I have been given a laptop for work which has Vista installed, and I need to install XP.
I have the XP disk and have already downloaded the KR10I Raid drivers which it tells me to do on the main site.
Upon startup of the XP install, I press F6 to load the Raid drivers (from USB FDD) and its picks up the drivers for XP. It finds the HDD and I choose the settings I want, however when it gets to the stage of actually installing the OS, a prompt appears asking to insert the disk with the Toshiba Raid driver, which is still in the USB FDD but it no longer accept it.
Any ideas?

Reinstalling Mavericks depends on several factors:
if you erased your recovery partition
what OS originally came on your Mac.
I'll assume you don't have a backup available that you made before your mishap,  because you didn't mention it.
That's really the take home message here: have a backup!
If you still have your recovery partition:
boot into the recovery partition (command R at restart)
use the recovery partition to reinstall Mavericks. see: OS X: About OS X Recovery
if you do not still have your recovery partition, then it depends on whether your Mac originally came with installer disks or not.
If it originally came with installer disks, you would boot from the installer disks, erase your HD, and then reinstall the OS that is on the installer disks, and then upgrade as necessary until you get to Mavericks.
If your mac did not originally come with installer disks, but you managed to erase your recovery partition, then you can try to boot into internet recovery (option-command-R at restart), and use internet recovery to erase your HD and reinstall the OS that originally came with your computer, and then upgrade to Mavericks if you need to. See: Hands on with Mountain Lion's OS X Recovery and Internet Recovery | Macworld
(the reference refers to ML but it applies just as well to Mavericks).

I think there's some remmants left over from when Apple transferred stuff over. We can try a quick fix, but if that doesn't work, I think the only option is to clean install OSX and then install Windows.
open disk utility, confirm that you only have 1 partition (mac journaled)
    restart and PRAM reset
open disk utility and repair permissions twice
    restart boot camp assistant
    Does it work?
If not, I would boot holding command+R, choose disk utility from the menu and completely erase your HD (formatting it as mac journaled again). Then, install OSX on this HD. Once OSX is installed, don't copy your files over from the backup yet. Instead, start boot camp assistant and see if you can get Windows installed. You can copy back your other files after we get Windows installed.

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

Why does Lion KEEP reversing changes you make in address book and other applications without your consent and without wanting it to??? Plus address book will NOT import old address book contacts from Snow Lepoard 10.6 and keep them.  This Lion OXS 7 is .. becoming very frustrating ... it will NOT keep changes made in the Address Book and it has destroyed my contacts which I only have electronically since 10.4 in my address book. I am NOT happy with this OS7 it has a lot of issues and faults.  How can one stop automatic reversing of data when inputting???
    Please help!
Wished I NEVER upgraded to this Lion!!!
    Carmelo

Relax. Your address book database is corrupted.
If you are syncing your Contacts with MobileMe or something else, disable it for now.
Backup your address book by going to File>Export>Address Book Archive.
    Quit Address Book.
Open your Library by holding down the Option (alt) key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. Select Library. Navigate into your Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb file.
Open Address Book. It will recreate the database from the raw data.
See how that works. If it is ok, then reenable syncing and see how that works.

  • Does anyone know how to install Windows 8 on a late 2008 Macbook Pro without a previous copy of Windows 7?

So, I'm trying to do a direct install of Windows 8 on my old Macbook Pro, but my machine isn't officially supported for Windows 8; I get an error message every time I try to use boot camp. I previously had Windows 8 running, but that was because I had upgraded it from Windows 7. Later on I ran into problems because I couldn't update to Windows 8.1 so I ended up deciding to just erase the partition and start over. Since then, unfortunately, I've lost the Windows 7 install disc I used and now it turns out Boot Camp won't help me do the install. Is there a way of manually installing Windows 8? Without the help of Boot Camp? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Can I install Windows onto a PXI controller originally configured with Pharlap?

We recently upgraded several PXI systems, replacing PXI-8196 controllers with PXI-8106 controllers. The old PXI-8196 controllers were running RTOS, but we would like to install Windows XP on them for use as ancillary DAQ systems.
Is there any reason why this would not be possible? Are there any hardware/BIOS differences between stricly-RT PXI systems and Windows/Dual-Boot PXI systems? I imagine we'd be replacing the hard drives (the stock 20GB's probably wouldn't cut it for a windows machine), so we could make sure that they're formatted as NTFS instead of FAT32. But once we have the new drives, we should be able to install Windows XP without any problems, right?

    Hi Phil,
The only catch is that our RT controllers do not come with a license for Windows, you would need to get your own, other than that, the hardware is perfectly capable of running windows. Keep in mind that dual boot is also an option:

  • Can't install Windows "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

I'm running OSX 10.9.3 on my Macbook Pro 13-inch, Early 2011 and trying to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp Assistant and I'm using a flash drive loaded with bootable copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (legal, if that makes any difference).
    Here's what I've been doing:
    1. Plug in my flash drive, then on Boot Camp Assistant, click "Install Windows 7 or later version"
    2. Set my Windows partition to 45GB and continue... so far so good...
    Then the problem:
    3. My computer restarts, goes to a black screen with the message "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
The flash drive is still plugged in but is it not being recognized or something? Nothing happens when I press any keys.
I can use OSX just fine by holding down "Alt/Option" on restart, but in my case what can I do to continue further with the Windows install? It's basically an empty partition as of now. Any help appreciated!

Ive been having this problem and have been trying to figure out how to fix it for almost a week now.  I have a 2011 17" MBP with the superdrive removed.  Ive tried many different methods and many different methods to no avail.  If anyone can help, please do!
xxzy, have you tried the KUNU method?
    you can find it here:

  • How do  I Install Windows 7 on Mac Book Pro via a Bootable USB Drive

    Hi Guys,
I have a Mac Book Pro 13 inch, Early 2011 Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 (I initially had OS 10.5.8 which I upgraded to OSX 10.9.4 a few months ago).
When purchased it, I installed Windows via Super Drive (that being the only time i ever used the super drive). My Windows got corrupted for some reason 2 months ago. Hence, I removed the windows via Bootcamp to perform a fresh install. I discovered my Super Drive was no longer working.
Thereon I have been trying to install Windows via a bootable USB Drive but am failing to do so. After going through several forums, I have reached the following stage.
    1. Created Bootable Windows USB Drive using Windows USB (http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Bootable-Windows-7-or-Vista-USB-Drive). Have used this USB drive to install windows on a DELL Computer
    2. Bootcamp wasnt creating a partition for windows since no Windows Installation disc was being detected in super drive. (Solved it by downloading Toast Titanium and loading the .iso file on a virtual drive).
    3. Boot menu was initially not detecting external drive, so installed rEFIt - An EFI Boot Menu and Toolkit. Now it is detecting the USB Drive.
Now when I boot from this device, it get a black screen with the message "No bootable device - Insert Boot Disk"
Request someone to please help me install windows as some softwares which I work with are windows based.

So my understanding is that my Boot Camp Assistant (BCA), since it does not allow USB installer, it sets NVRAM to boot from Optical Drive. Right?
    Yes.
So can I change it or update it to another BCA version which supports the same??
All BCA versions drive the logic based on the Mac Model Identifier. Unfortunately there is no real workaround. .

  • Hi i am trying to install windows to my macbook through boot camp and i get this message Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.!!!what can i do???please help me!

Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server. this is the message that i get a few days now that i am trying to install windows through boot camp to my macbook!does anybody knows what i can do????

You keep it on the usb stick for after you boot into Windows. From Windows you install the Windows Support software on the stick. Do you realize that you need to buy and install Windows? The Windows Support software you downloaded is only the Windows drivers for your hardware.
Read the Boot Camp installation instructions and help guides located here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • I installed Windows 8.1 64 on a T61 and would like to update bios

I am not able to run the Bios update...
any ideas how how I can install the NEW BIOS?
the latest bios is date 2012 I have a 2009 version.
Ever since I updated the previous bios my computer is getting stuck OFF at times. So if figured if I update to the newest bios this should happen.
I also ran via the solution center a hardware verfication and everything is OK.
So I honestly think the problem is the BIOS...
    any ideas?

I doubt your problem is the bios, they don't go bad but if you want to update you can do it from 32bit windows version or from a cdrom boot disc.
Also, if you're going to risk the bios update I'd install the middleton bios which will enable SATA2, and host of other enhancements. It's not an official lenovo product but you can find it doing a google search or if you want to send me a PM I can get you a link. I do recommend you make sure your system is stable before attempting to flash the bios though. If your computer is failing to post when you power it on you may have a failing nVidia GPU (if equipped). If your laptop is crashing or randomly restarting then don't attempt to flash the bios. If it crashes during the flash it could kill your motherboard.
ps. middleton based his bios off the 2011 version, the only difference with the 2012 version is an update for using voice telephone during dialup internet sessions and since dialup is rarely used today no one has modified the 2012 version.
