Installing windoze XP SP3 / choosing a virtual machine

Hello one and all! This is my first post - testament to a full year's use of my lovely imac with no problems since ditching PCs and windoze...
however......
I am looking to run an internet-based software program that will only run on IE7 or 8 using Windows as the base OS (the program is Landmark Group's 'Promap').
I want to run this within Mac OS as I need to use existing files and programs on OS 10.5.7 so am exploring VM Fusion, Parallels and VirtualBox.
Can anyone recommend which would be most easy to install and run? And which is overall the most stable?
Secondly, I already have a copy of Windows XP SP3 which is installed on my old PC. Can I re-install this onto the new 'virtual' PC? I have all the install discs and the key number. The old PC is lying in pieces on the workbench and I have no further need for it.
Apologies if my post is in the wrong place, this seemed the most fitting after 10 minutes of looking around in Discussions.

Hi Mike and welcome to Discussions,
all three of these Virtualization apps are good to use for the purpose you have in mind.
Since you already have a Windows XP license I would suggest to start/try with VirtualBox, since it is free.
Personally I use Parallels (because it was the first one out) and have made a short peek into VirtualBox finding it good to use.
Is your XP license a bundled-one (from Dell, HP or the like) ?
These bundled versions usually only works with the PC they originally came with.
If not, then you can use this XP license, but must reactivate the license with Microsoft.

You have to download and run the setup.exe on a Windows system.
That will then download Windows and you can choose at the end to create install media, then choose to save as an iso.
It has to be done on a Windows machine and if you want to download 64 bit Windows it must be run on a 64 bit Windows machine.

Installing BC 2.1 on a Virtual Machine (Xp Pro)

I run VMWare Fusion on top of Boot Camp 2.0. The Fusion virtual machine is running Xp Pro. Can I install BC 2.1 from the virtual machine's Xp or should I quit Fusion and install BC 2.1 from the simple Boot Camp Xp "side" of my computer? Anyone have any experience installing BC 2.1 on a virtual machine that also runs BC?

Boot Camp under VMWare won't read your actual hardware drivers, only the VM drivers, do it booting into Windows, not VM.

Does OS installed through boot camp or in virtual machine has access and full control of the peripherals like native OS X Lion?

I am planning to buy new PC for my faculty needs and this time I am thinking to buy Apple laptop like Mac book Pro 13" or so ( I owe already IPhone and Ipad 2)
To make final decision I need few information . These are:
1. May I use Boot Camp or similar utility software to install Windows 7 OS next to OS X Lion, or use some kind of virtual box software to create virtual machines with diverse guest OS in them like Windows , Linux etc.?
2. Does OS installed through Boot camp or in virtual machine has access and full control of the peripherals like native OS X Lion?
3. May I use the same disk partitions to access to the files regardless if I am using Windows 7 or OS X Lion operating system?
4. Is there full compatibility between Microsoft Office under OS X Lion and Windows 7 M. Office?
5. What is general user experience with OS X Lion operating system comparing to Windows 7?

1. Yes. You can install Windows 7 natively using Boot Camp Assistant or you can install Windows 7 in a virtual machine using Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox
2. If installed using Boot Camp Assistant Windows 7 uses all your computer's resources just as OSx does. If installed using a VM Windows 7 will share the computer's resources with OSx.
3. A Boot Camp partition is separate from the OSx partition. The VMs allow sharing of files across partitions since both OS are running at the same time.
4. No, not 100%.
5. Too broad a question. Be specific about what feature you are asking about or search the Internet for comparisons. I use both and find they both work well.

Installing Hyper-V Powershell Module on Virtual Machine

I have a situation where I am running Hyper-V 2012 and have several virtual RemoteApp RDS servers (server 2012 R2) with a user profile disk server (also 2012R2 virtual machine) that stores all of the VHDX user profile disks. I want to perform some maintenance
on the VHDX files by running optimize-vhd to compact the disks to keep them from being larger than they need to be. Anyhow, that PowerShell commandlet won't run unless the Hyper-V module is installed but in order to install it, the Hyper-V role must be installed.
Since it's a virtual machine, it's not supported to install the Hyper-V role (although I hear it may be possible) so I was wondering if it is possible to install only the Hyper-V PowerShell modules. I would just use a Hyper-V server to run it but the commandlet
does not seem to allow UNC/Share paths. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your time!

I tested on my hyper-v enviroment, and installed the feature "Hyper-v Module for Windows Powershell" on VM, and I could run the cmdlet "optimize-vhd", however, It couldn't run successfully without Hyper-v Role installed:
In addition, if you just want to compact the vhd file on vm, how about using the command "DiskPart":
You can then complete the compacting using diskpart from a Command Prompt:
Run diskpart
Select the disk via its path: select vdisk file="<path>"
Attach it as read-only: attach vdisk readonly
Compact it: compact vdisk
Upon completion of the compact, detach it again: detach vdisk
You can then re-attach it via Disk Management in its normal and newly compacted state

I would like to know the steps required to install Oracle Unbreakable Linux on my Virtual Machine, cos i tried to but i keep having problems when i get to selecting the destination for the installation, the prompt says i have to allow it format my hard disk wont i lose my files in the process.

When you create a virtual disk for your VMWare instance the format will only affect this disk. You can see this as it will display the size of the disk. If this is the size of the virtual disk (default = 8 GB) then go ahead. If this looks like your normal HD just stop and read the VMWare installation Guide from www.vmware.com

Since you're on Windows 7 I'd probably go for using VirtualBox

Downloading 2012 depends what you're after really, if you've got TechNet / MSDN then you can download it from there, otherwise you'd need to have a licenced copy. You can download 180 day evaluation versions from the Microsoft website here :

Installing Acrobat 9 Pro on a virtual machine on my Mac using Parallels. Not an upgrade but being asked what I upgraded from.

I'm installing Acrobat 9 Pro for Windows on a virtual machine on my Mac (running Parallels). I successfully installed the same program using the same discs on the same Mac previously, but that virtual machine became corrupt and can no longer be launched. For this re-installation, the installation sequence is asking what version I upgraded from - but as this is not an upgrade, I get stuck at that step and am unable to complete the installation. What should my next step be?

This error usually comes up if the serial number you are using is an Upgrade serial number.
In such a case the installer will prompt to enter the previous qualifying version serial number.
Please send me a private message with the serial number and I will validate and confirm that for you.
If you do not have the previous qualifying version serial number then the current serial number needs to be unlocked.

Error while installing SOA, "Could not create java virtual machine"

I am trying to install SOA latest release, but am getting an error stating "Could not create java virtual machine" and just that. No log, nothing. Could anybody help me out on this?

Is JRE installed on your machine?
If yes it may get corrupted, try to remove and reinstall jre again. Then try to install SOA.

That is the Compatibility report that I'm getting when trying to install onto parallels 10 Version 10.2.0 (28956) on my mid 2009 Macbook 13. This happens just after I click 'Install now' and accept the T&Cs.
I am selecting 'Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, setting and applications'.
I am upgrading from the Windows Technical Preview Evaluation Copy. Build 9879.
I have updated my EFI and tried a few restarts and am booting from a CD. No luck yet.
Any help would be muchos appreciated.

I am not familiar with mac machines, based on what I know, there should be more settigns that need to be configured before the installation of Windows, I suggest you contact the manufacturer for further help regarding how to make Windows to upgrade smoothly.

IIS7 Role install fails on newly built 2008R2 virtual machine

I loaded two completely identical VMs and was only able to install the IIS role on one of them. I rebuilt the server and had the same issue.

Do you have also to install antivirus seperately on virtual machine or one antivirus wil be enough for both OS?

Assuming the virtual machine will be connected to the Internet I can only advise you to install antivirus in the virtual machine as well.

It is listed that from service pack1 we can install windows 7 & window server 2008 std edition. But nowhere it listed that window server 2008R2 is supported or not.

No pdf printer in mac - so No pdf printer available in 'virtual machine' on the mac-any suggestions?

I am running Mac OS X version 10.6.2 and I installed CS4 on the laptop. I have Acrobat 9 Pro - and no pdf 'printer' due to Mac's new operating system. Unfortunately, I also have a virtual machine on my laptop running Windows XP (with VMWare Fusion). I need the 'pdf printer' in my virtual machine to create pdf's from my Windows programs. When I bought the Mac version of CS4 (including Acrobat) I didn't know the 'printer' wasn't included and I can't see buying another Acrobat for Windows....does anyone have any suggestions for installing the pdf printer so my virtual machine has access to the printer?

Hey, guys! be careful, there's a sneaky catch with this "no-pdf-printer" thing.
The warning, concerns mostly the pros (publishers, editors, typographers....) who are used in CMYK chromatic gamut.
The catch is this: you get a CMYK archive, all right, but the color tone IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than the one you were used to get with the old good method. That's because, when you choose the "save as adobe pdf" option, initially you get an RGB CONVENTIONAL arch (check the "colors" tag: there 's no CONVENTIONAL CMYK option available). Of course, if you choose to Distill it so that your final arch is a PDF CMYK, what you finally get IS a CMYK archive, BUT: THE COLOR TONE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT! The Reds are pretty much down, and there's a green-ish cast upon it.
What you can do (and this could be an answer to the dear friend with the difficult onscreen name) is this:
You can install a virtual PPD PRINTER (an LPD). If you Google "virtual ppd printer for OS 10.6" you get the directions, DIRECTLY from Adobe (anyhow, the link is http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404931.html).
And... VOI LA! You can use this (choosing as a PPD Device the "GENERAL IMAGESETTER") in order to make things the good old way (print it as a PS and after DISTILL it enjoyably!!!).
I wonder, why Apple want to make our lives difficult, pretending the same moment that it only makes them easier...
Well, it's pretty much understandable: SNOW LEOPARD is the "prova generalle" before LION is unleashed. They test us, they weigh us, they are watching our reactions, thus validating for FREE their products. They are clever! but being clever just by considering the others (and treat them) as if they were fools, IS NOT HONEST AT ALL!
