Installing X11 on Tiger

Following the advice on a previous thread, I'm trying to install X11
on Tiger using the installation disk, from the "optional install"
package on disk1. I see four packages ("Applications", "Additional Fonts",
"Language Translations" and "Printer Drivers") but they're all listed
as being empty.
Where is the X11 installation located on the Tiger disks and how do
I install it?
Catherine

  • Can anyone help with installing X11 on Tiger?

I am going around in circles trying to install X11. I need it to run OpenOffice, their instructions for X11 say to run from Mac CD, but my mac cd has no option to install X11. If I download the install files from Apple's site, it says it's already installed!! Open office installer says it's not installed!!
Is there no SIMPLE way to install this??

    Hi
The makers of OpenOffice also made a version that doesn't need X11. It uses the Aqua interface & is called NeoOffice(link)

How do I install x11 on tiger without the install disk? I just spent the past hour tearing my house apart trying to find the install disk, but no luck. I have no idea where it is.

  • How do I install X11 after many OS X tiger updates?

My iMac G5 came with OS X 10.4.0 installed. Since then, I have updated to the present 10.4.7 via web updates. Now, I need to run MatLab 14 and need to have X11 installed. Of course, I don't have an OS X install CD for 10.4.7 and my original CD has a lot of ancient application versions on it. How can I install X11 w/ minimal hassle? I cannot find a stand alone version of X11 on the Apple web site for tiger, let alone my new version.

    Hi, Mr. EGL.
You do not want to choose the icon for the Xcode tools if you want X11. The Xcode Tools icon leads to the installation of Xcode tools, not a custom install of X11.
To install X11 at any time, see "Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4"
    Good luck!

stacy-g, Welcome to the discussion area!
You may want to grab NeoOffice instead. NeoOffice is the OS X version of OpenOffice and runs natively in OS X. No need for X11.

  • Installing x11 without installing the whole system?

I did not install x11 when I installed Tiger on my Mac G5. I have now, via a number of updates, moved to version 10.4.10.
Sadly, when I insert my system install disk it will not let me install x11 without installing the whole system. That is a risky and impractical situation at this point.
Is there a way to install x11 without installing a whole new system?

On the Installer Disc One there is an installer named 'Optional Installs.' You can install the X11 software from that package without reinstalling OS X.

  • Cannot install x11 for ies4osx download

I need to get IE v6.0 or greater to work with a certain website(MLS) and found this program ies4osx. To download it I must first install X11 from the Tiger Installation DVD. I installed the 'xcodetools.mpkg' and then the x11SDK.pkg from the Packages folder. I then downloaded the appropriate software, Darwine 1.1.5, drag to applications and voila I should be gold, but it says after all this that x11 has not been installed or needs to be updated. I checked, there are no software updates available. Can anyone help me, please?

  • Troubles installing x11.app

I have downloaded the x11 app, but when I try to install it, it says I can't, because "there is newer software on your computer", even though I don't have x11.app ANYWHERE on my computer.
    So, help?

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try installing from your Tiger disk(s). Insert the disk. When it mounts on your Desktop, double click. You'll see a folder that says: XCode Tools. Just follow the instructions.
If that doesn't help, just post back.

  • Is there a way to install X11 without re-installing OSX?

I cannot find a way of installing X11 without re-installing OSX.
I've looked on the cd for the installer but with no luck.
The X11 installer isn't located in the bundled software installer and X11 will not install with the X11 SDK.
The retail verson of tiger has an optional istall on the disk but it will not work with intel macs. And the X11 download from apple will not work with Tiger (not even in Rosetta).
I've found the X11 install option when I restart my MacBook with the install DVD inside and am asked to reinstall Tiger. This doesnt do me any good because i dont want to do a fresh install of tiger just to get X11.
Does anyone know a way around this issue?
    Please Help!
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.6)

On the intel Tiger DVD there is no additional software or other software folers or packages. There is:
Install Bundled Software (which does not contain X11)
Install OSX and Bundled Software (which requires you to reinstall OSX to Install X11)
Xcode Tools Folder (which contains Xcode and Xcode extras but no X11 installer)
    And documentation PDFs

  • How to install X11 1.1.3 when all you have is 1.0?

Help! I just upgraded OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.11, and almost everything seems to be fine except that can't seem to get the newest version of X11. I installed v. 1.0 that comes with the install DVD, and then I tried to get 1.1.3 (so I could download the latest GIMP) but you can only install 1.1.3 if you have 1.1 at least. Which is fine except that I can't find just a plain version of X11 1.1 or 1.1.1 to install!! So if course it won't let me install 1.1.3 (says I have a newer version installed already, which I don't). Where oh where can I find X11 1.1? Or is there a way around this?
    Thanks,
    Jerzy

Did you install X11 from the DVD before or after getting the software updates to bring the system up to 10.4.11? Does Software Update offer you anything? I only show updates for 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 so I'm wondering if an earlier update might have been included as part of a more general update.
Are you sure you installed from the Tiger DVD? My receipt for X11 shows the version as 1.1. The date on the receipt is shortly after I got this machine.

  • Installing X11 without the CD?

Hi, I have an iMac computer (Intel chip). I would like to install X11 and understood I need the CDs for that. Unfortunately I've been looking for it for about a month now and couldn't find it around here (I had a major apartment movement recently).
Question is can I somehow get X11 installed without having the CDs?
    Thanks a lot!

The install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is on DVD media and the answer is no.
If you have lost your install package, you need to contact AppleCare with your computer's serial number available and request a replacement.
You need the install package for several very good reasons.
    Installing X11.
Running Disk First Aid repair on your boot volume.
Re-installing Tiger and all included software via an Archive & Install or an
Erase & Install if needed or desired.
Installing or reinstalling an individual application included with the install package.
If you ever sell your Mac or give it to a family member of friend down the road, the buyer or recipient will want and need the install package that shipped with your Mac when new even if the compute is upgraded to Leopard or the OS X version after Leopard so keep the replacement install package in a known, safe and easily accessible location.

  • Where To Download X11 For Tiger

Where do I download the latest Apple supported X11 for Tiger?
Once I download X11 how do I go about installing it?
I have a few programs that require the X11 enivroment, and I do not have it installed. I do know that it is on my install disk but I do not have my install disk avaible at the moment.
I am needing this for Tiger, on a Macbook Pro.

  • How to install x11??

I just downloaded gimp, and it says i need x11. So i download x11 from apple and when i try to install it, it says newer software is already on my system!
So wth? Do i have it or not? Its nowhere to be found on the install discs that came with my macbook

Use the install disks from your mac to install X11, the X11 download on apples site is for panther not tiger.

  • Installing X11 somewhat problematic

    Hi!
I'm a relative newbie to Mac, and I'm haveing some problems with x11.
I'm trying to run OpenOffice, so I obviously need it, but when I download it, I get the message that a newer version already is installed.
I have been all over apple.com, and there is no way I'm downloading old versions...
So I find out that it's recommended to install it from the DVD. Problem is that I have just moved accross the world, and did not remember to take the DVD with me... I can't find any proof of x11 being on my computer anywhere. OpenOffice just says that it can't run because i need x11, and x11 says a newer version is installed... I'm getting slightly frustrated:-)
    Sorry for the long post...
    Can anyone help me?
    Regards
    Audun.

    hi asd....
what you want to install is X11User.pkg, which only exists as an optional install from your Tiger DVD....
any versions of X11 that you might find on the i-net are for panther (it was indeed an apple download at that point) and these won't work with Tiger.
if you don't have access to your Tiger DVD, and you really need X11, then i think your best option is to use XFree86's version.
