Installing XP: Is It Safe?

I purchased Windows XP Home to install via Boot Camp, but before doing so, I was hoping to inquire some input: how crucial is it to backup preexisting data before installing Windows? Or, what are the chances that a problem will occur and data be lost? With about 200GB of data consisting of business and personal files (and external hard drives a bit too expensive after buying the computer), is the likelihood of there being an error during installation low enough to go ahead and try? Or should it be put off until I'm able to back everything up?
Thanks so much for any help and/or advice you can give me.

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
up to now I have installed Windows on my Macs three times while BootCamp was still in its Beta status.
I haven't had any difficulties and no data/file loss on my OSX partitions.
Nonetheless I would always suggest to make a backup of anything valuable for you, before doing the process of repartioning your harddisk and installing Windows through BootCamp.
And if you think of the value these "200GB of business and personal files" do represent to you, I don't think that an external harddisk is that expansive !
Also don't forget, that the greatest source of errors on any computer is sitting before the computer (no offence, I include myself too)

• Can only start Windows 7 (installed with bootcamp) in safe mode

I installed Windows 7 about 3 weeks ago, everything has gone smoothly until a few days ago. I can only start Windows in safe mode, if I try to do it in normal mode, it starts to log in but the screen will just go black and the computer will shut off completely. Then it won't turn back on for like 5 minutes. My mac partition works fine, and I can't find a solution to this Windows problem. When I try to do the "restore' thing where you make it go back to a certain install point, it gives me an error. Please help me, I have a course starting in 3 days and I need Windows OS for it.

Post your question in the BootCamp forum.

• What does this log mean? Fresh os install still can only safe boot

*My head is about to explode.*

*below is a system log from before I put in new drive.*
*however, after new drive and fresh install and still can't boot I check sytem log and still get same message:*
*Cannot use ATS Persistent Store - switching to old FODB cache code*
*Is this my underlying problem?*
*What does it mean?*
*When I try to boot up normally, I get to grey screen , spinning wheel, then wheel turns pixelly and fuzzy with random colors juist where the wheel is and the grey screen with apple logo fuzzy then black.*

thank you thank you for taking an interest. this is so frustrating.
i only have apple keyboard, mighty mouse, and 20 inch cinema display connected. this morning took out memory and tried to boot up with individual pairs in the first bank. first the (2)256, the (2) 1g, and then the other (2) 1g modules. everytime I get the weird fuzzy wheel under the logo after a while, black screen flashes, then grey apple logo fuzzy screen then black forever.
I ran tiger updates this morn. still will only boot to safe mode. then tried to run leopard disk to install it
will not boot from leopard disk.
tried safe boot, then doulble click install leopard, restart, then the saga repeats with the pixely red square around the wheel.
these are fresh drives with only what came on instll disk loaded.
thanks again for taking an interest.
i love this system(well at least i did). I want to install leopard on my powerbook too but am terrified to do so right now since it is working and I have work to do. Can't afford to have no computer to do my work on...self employment is great?!
This is making me crazy. I anxiously await your words of wisdom.

• Failed ? install of 10.8 -safe mode extremely slow

hi this is my first post here
i have an imac early 2009 core2duo 2.93 ghz with 8gb ram ( it came with 4 but i upgraded with official apple ram - took it to an authorized reseller .
( i 'm in greece and we do not have an apple store ... yet )
anyway i was running 10.6.8 and it was fast but i decided to upgrade to mountain lion
i used a usb stick to format since the imac had a kernel panic and was unable to create a second partition for dual booting ( i was planning on installing 10.8 on a second partition just to test before updating Macintosh HD )
so i formated
it installed and said installation succeeded BUT when it restarted after the boot chime and the apple logo and the wheel the desktop did not show up . just a blank screen . white .
then apple support told me to format again with the snow leopard dvd and redownload 10.8 from the mac app store and update . did all that ( disk newly formatted ) same thing happened .
after the installation suceeded message your computer will restart in 5,4,3,2,1 it restarts and boom no desktop
apple support told me to start in safe mode and it booted . but it is extremely slow . laggy . like windows with a virus
activity moitor ( i barely managed to open it ) said cpu 97% usage and ram 7.00 gb + used
is it normal for safe boot to be so slow or my imac cannot run 10.8 ?
it's a core2duo 2.93 ghz as i mentioned
and i upgraded the ram to 8gb just for the update . .

in the authorized apple service they told me it's probably the hard disk but the support phone line sais probably sth with the graphics
both agree : hardware issue ...
it's a pitty they removed lion from the app store . i could format back to snow leopard download lion ( which i bought but never installed ) and then update to lion .
i do have a bootable dvd created from the InstalESD.dmg file of lion . i also have a copy of the installer on my external HDD .
would it cause more trouble if i used the lion dvd i created boot from there format , and then choose reinstall mac os x ... then see what happens ?
maybe it's just m lion that causes the problem ?
and and another thing . if it is indeed a harware problem wouldn't i encounter the same issues on snow leopard when i formatted and came back to it from M Lion ?

• I want to delete the files and applications in the download folder. I'm afraid something will happen to the applications already installed. Is it safe to delete?

Also, can I set the computer to periodically clean this folder? How?

There may be an app somewhere out there to do that, but in my book, that's just something else to complicate things. I have my downloads set to the desktop. I install the app and immediately delete the download (or, if I want to save it, move it to where I want it saved). Takes a few seconds and no housecleaning to worry about later. ymmv

• How to install Windows Updates in Safe Mode with Networking

On my VISTA Business edition, I was getting BSOD (blue screen) so I booted the system in Safe Mode with Networking. But in this mode when I go to Start Menu-->All Programs-->Windows Updates, nothing happens. Please help.
Thanks..Nam

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMDjZQqz-i8
Steps:
1-Open command prompt with admin mode
Or Boot from DVD in command prompt mode.(This is what i experienced, able to show the safe mode menu)
2- Write this command "bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy" and click enter
3- You can now press F8 while Windows 8 starts in order to access Safe Mode and other Advanced Boot options.

• Firefox update won't work, re-install doesn't work, safe mode doesn't work, Not firewall / virus software

I had Firefox v 16 or 17 on windows 7
A few weeks ago it told me to update, I did, and then it wouldn't load when I clicked on the icon
I used system recovery to get back to the prior version. I just ignored the "update firefox" messages for a while.
I decided to try to fix the problem and completely un-install firefox (all bookmarks, etc), re-install the newest version, and now again it won't load when I click on the icon.
(((And i have no system restore points that still have firefox)))
In the task manager firefox.exe *32 shows up for about 30 seconds after I click on the icon
I've un-installed, re-installed 10 times with no luck
I tried entering firefox in safemode (both by pressing F8 in system startup and also by holding shift down while I click on the desktop icon).
I've tried using chrome (which loads but freezes) and opera (which won't even install)
IE works
I have allowed firefox through the firewall, allowed all permissions for my user, and turned off my virus software entirely
I searched for the firefox profiles folder but did not locate it (It must have been deleted with my bookmarks, etc)
I scanned my computer using the microsoft security scanner suggested by mozilla, located 5 infected files, deleted those files, un-installed and re-installed firefox and still nothing
I have turned off everything in the task manager that appears to be non-essential. I've googled the things that have no description and found they are essential.
Am I doomed to a lifetime of IE?

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a '''''Clean reinstall'''''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*'''Windows:'''
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

• Installed beta for Yosemite on MacBook pro- now it keeps restarting(grey page only) without letting me get to log in page so I can install newly released Yosemite- tried safe mode still won't let me in??

Cant get my MacBook Pro to let me log in because beta-Yosemite keeps restarting and I can't install new Yosemite- Tried safe mode but all I get is grey screen?

Have you tried booting in Yosemite's Recovery partition by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting?
You should be able to re-install OS X if you can get that far.

• MacBook-won't install/update software unless in safe mode

Hi there, I am worried I have a virus. My computer won't update/install software unless in safe mode. It is also incredibly slow to use the internet and sometimes microsoft word will just close on me unexpectedly. It also gets very hot. I am unsure what to do about it. It is a white macbook with curved edges, I had had it about 5 years. Recently it has been having a lot of problems and I am unsure why.

This is not something you should blame on a virus... it's extremely unlikely that you have any kind of malware, and even more unlikely that that malware is a contributing cause of these problems.
I'd advise you to try the suggestions in my Mac Performance Guide. If nothing there helps, let us know what you found as a result of those suggestions.

nothing is mounted (i rebooted before applying). not sure why it's giving that NFS error. it's consistent tho.. if i reboot and try the manual install of the patch, I get the same error.
after the failed patch "installed" it left my sound not working... so far everything else appears to work. any thoughts on fixing this are appreciated. i ran diskutil and 'fixed perms' and 'verified disk' ... patch still fails.

Try reinstalling the patch. If you get all the way through the installation, then see if your sound works. If not, then I suggest you do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed.

• Blue screen appears & Information about Archive & Install option.

Hey, i am using Mac 10.5.8
Yesterday it was working perfectly fine.
But after dinner when i tried to open, it dont go beyond blue screen
I have tried disk utility using original MAC OS X DVD, while verifying it says disk appears to be ok, but its says some alterations in disk pernission, i have clicked on repaire disk permission, and after that tried to start, but still it stuck at that blue screen.
Its getting that grey apple screen, then further going to that blue scren, but dont go beyond that.
Now i want to know if anyone have solution to this problem. Please help me
Also want to know, if i go for "Archive & Install " option, will that keep my data or erase my data. As i have arround 2-4 GB important data.
Please respond to this as soon as possible, i need it to be fixed urgently.
Thanks in advance.

Once the system is up and running, you should keep a back up of very important data.
You can burn a DVD.
That is why i am asking, will archieve and install keep my data safe?? All my documents and all??
Normally data should be safe after Archive and Install.
That is my experience. But there is no guarantee.
Best.

• Cannot install Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant.

Well, I am having some issues installing "Windows Live Essentials" update and "Games for Windows Marketplace". I have found that the cause of this is from "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant", (wllogin_64.msi) which I am unable to install.
Things I have tried:
Removed every live related application with the windows cleanup tool.
Tried to install wllogin_64.msi as administrator.
Tried to install wllogin_64.msi in safe mode.
Restored from an earlier system point.
Ran chkdsk.
Ran a virus and spyware scan.

I would really like some help on this one, I have games that I bought through the marketplace and I can't access them without this sign-in assistant.

Hi, I'm having the same issue as the OP. I just recently got Resident Evil 5 for PC. I've had it like a month and I can't get it to work. At first I tried it on my desktop, which runs on XP, and I found out part of my issue was the fact that some of my parts
are out of date. However, I could never get Games For Windows Live to work because it would never connect to download my profile because of a "network error". I later found out that there's something called hotfix.exe that you need to have to get it to work.
I looked THIS up and found it on the Microsoft website and then found out, thankfully, before I ran it that someone else had been having the same issue as me with Left 4 Dead, and when they installed hot fix it crashed their computer, and they no longer have
an operating system.
So I did NOT run hotfix.exe on my desktop. I have been since waiting to get my laptop back to install it. It runs on Windows 7, and is considerably newer. Now, I have sat here for 7 hours waiting for RE5 to install. It installed, finally and brought up the
game screen. I went to sign into GFWL, and it worked! However, it also said that there an "update" that needed to be completed and gave me
bullshit saying that if I didn't do it, it would sign me out. (This is also the same message it has been giving me whenever I try to sign into Messenger. It should also be noted that as well as with messenger, it won't fucking install.)
So, anyway, I downloaded and installed the update. It closed out the game, started it back up and I went through the same process again. I downloaded this mysterious update THREE times. Finally, I restarted my computer. I went back into the game and was
met with the same message again. This time I closed it out and went to run Games For Windows Live to see if maybe I could find a list of needed updates and do them all at once. It told me I needed the sign-in assistant to run it so I went to download that.
Like OP, I'm being met with the same issue. It just goes through the process every time and always closes out because of some "error". On top of this, now I can't even get Resident Evil 5 to start. It keeps giving me yet ANOTHER "error" message. I don't
know what to do next aside from un-install it and try again, but I sat here for
six fucking hours waiting on it to install the FIRST time. This is also the third computer I have sat and waited to try and install this game on. I am at a total loss, and I'm very, very angry. If I may rant for a second:
What the fuck are all these mysterious "errors" I keep having on a new computer that's running perfectly, and why the fuck don't they explain what the goddamn error is so I can fix it? (In hindsight, that might be in the logs but I've been to angry to look
into them.)
And also, in my searching for fixes for this problem, I've come across posts from 2008 and 2009 of people having
the same issues. Explain to me why the it's 2011 and it's STILL not fixed?
I am not happy with Microsoft right now, at all. I think it's bullshit you have to even sign up for an account to even save the info. None of the many other games I play do that. And how are we supposed to be able to play the goddamn games if Games For Windows
Live is glitched? I've never done anything with GFWL before this so I didn't know it was having these issues. Do I need to search EVERY aspect of a game AND it's software AND the people that made it available to make sure I can play it now?
Is spending 2 thousand dollars on computers from Microsoft and another 30 on a game not enough of a payment to be able to
play the fucking game?

• [Solved?] Installing multiple versions of Firefox at the same time

I would like to install the normal Firefox in the repositories and also firefox-pgo-minefield-smp from the AUR so that I may use either one as desired.
Looking at the current PKGBUILD from http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33506 (pkgbuild @ http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/firef … p/PKGBUILD ) I am thinking that perhaps I would modify this line:
export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib/firefox-$_prever -Wl,-O1,--sort-common,--hash-style=gnu,--as-needed"
to reflect the path where I would like to install it like so:
export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-rpath,/opt/firefox-$_prever -Wl,-O1,--sort-common,--hash-style=gnu,--as-needed"
And then presumably fix my symlink at /usr/bin/firefox to point back to /usr/lib/firefox-2.6 again. (and also fix the menu links and I realize I would have to use an ugly 'pacman -U tarball --force' to install it -- there's got to be a better way as that is very ugly and wrong surely???? Perhaps modify the pkgname as well as conflicts and provides so I could install it more normally?)
Correct? Would I also need to modify a prefix or such besides this and if so where in the pkgbuild (ideally) or source would you recommend (must I change the actual makefile or does my modification in the PKGBUILD take care of this? Would you in your experience recommend another approach for this?
I thought it wise to ask here before hacking away with this stuff and possibly hosing my system in unforeseen ways. Please forgive my greenness. I have spent a few hours researching this but still am not quite sure thus I ask. While I think I could do it with a straight compile with a modified configure I'm unsure of how to do it best using the arch tools...
Thanks for your time.

Basically solved but not yet mastered.
So I've figured out how to do this, it works, but not yet optimally and I am unsure about some things. Namely:

It seems as though it is a bit messy, as if I have more than I need installed. Especially the two entries in /opt/lib/. Do I really need all this?

^ A dirty hack to download the latest nightly of the electrolysis tree, pgo optimized for an intel i686 P4 (not native to get around the seg fault bug). I just commented out the .desktop files as well as the icon for now. Also the conflicts and provides section have merely been commented out. The goal is to have this work independently from the standard firefox allowing me to run both on the system at the same time.
Anyone see anything that I have missed and could fix as far as doing the separate install in /opt using makepkg and the pkgbuild? I've been using arch less than a month and this is the first I've really hacked with a PKGBUILD and mozconfig so I feel I could really use the help. Any insight appreciated greatly.

• Mac Pro 1.1 won't restart from boot HD or install DVD

I have a MacPro 1.1 quad which won't finish the restart sequence from Boot HD or the Install DVD. I also can't get the DVD to boot to anything but hardware test (D key), which I ran and passed. After reading lots of posts about similar problems, I was pretty sure that it is my ATI Radeon 1900 card gone bad killing the restart right after the Grey apple screen. Then, while trying everything I could think of and finally getting the OPTION key restart to get the Startup Manager, I noticed my old boot camp partition (VISTA) that I had played around with, but never used much. After several failed attempts to get the install DVD to boot, I tried the boot camp partition and to my amazement, after a pause, windows started up. (That's actually how I'm writing this now.)
I ran some tests on the graphics card from windows and it appears to be running fine, albeit a little hot. So now the question: Can the graphics card still be the culprit when it performs ok on the Windows side?
Windows also says that the OSX boot partition of the same drive that boot camp is on can't be read (using MacDrive). But a Seagate HDD diag tool checked the drive and found no errors. I guess that could be part of my problem, but then why wouldn't it boot from the install DVD or in safe mode. I even tried putting the install DVD in my macbook and booting from there in Target mode, with no luck. Also, my install DVD is the original Leopard that came with the machine, but I had upgraded to 10.6.8 later. Would that cause the DVD not to work as a boot disc? I just want to get to the Disk Utility so I can reinstall.
Any knowledge or help would be so appreciated!
Thanks

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 and recently starting having issues. I was running out of drive space for my Vista drive I use Bootcamp. I decided to reinstall Vista on a bigger drive. I went through the normal procedure and had a **** of time installing Vista until I removed the main Lion SSD. Lion has Windows 7 drivers only. So I wanted to reinstall Snow Leopard on a blank drive and get those drivers.
Mac Pro will not read or mount the SL installation DVD. It mounted once and could barely read anything but at a slow rate. I cleaned the disk, but after that despite holding down not the C and D keys at boot up and using Option at boot up the SL kept getting spitted out. Tonight I took it apart and cleaned it with compressed air and vacuum cleaner. I popped the DVD again and it spit it out. I put a DVD movie and it mounted fine. I'm ripping it as we speak. I've done this before just want to see why it won't read SL.
Considered buying an external DVD write for $39 to see if I can get around this issue. Will post back on results. Otherwise this 2007 Mac Pro has been rock solid since then.

• Why does my imac start up in safe mode

hi, imac starts up in safe mode. not every time, only when progress bar appears at startup.
I have had the Logic board replaced under warranty but it still started in safe mode.
sometimes when it has started the wifi symbol is missing and no wifi, other times the sound is not there and the symbol is missing on the top bar.
I then have to restart and it comes up good. sometimes the desktop top bar is not there until I press the mouse and then it appears.
don't know what to do, any Ideas anybody?

How often does this happen? Do you have automatic updating enabled in Software Update? If so, then it's possible those were firmware updates being installed, not startup in safe mode. In a safe mode startup you are initially prompted for your password before proceeding past login.
If a firmware update was happening then the computer will restart on its own. If you interrupt the process then the update isn't installed, so it will try again on the next restart.
Safe mode is initiated by holding down the SHIFT key at restart. It should not occur without user intercession.
