Installing XP SP2 PC hard drive in Mac

What I want to do is take the hard drive out of my PC which is already formatted with Windows XP SP2 and put it in my Mac Pro as a second bootable drive. Assume that my drive is a SATA drive (I need to check first) that is installable in the Mac. Can I do this and how without running Boot Camp to reformat the drive and going through the full Boot Camp partitioning procedure? If so, how can I just create the Mac drivers disk?

You will probably need to use Windows Recovery console or repair booting from XP SP2 - as long as it is not an OEM/Dell/HP type machine specific copy.
What you might want to look into before trying to boot from your Windows SATA drive is first download and use WinClone www.twocanoes.com to backup the partition while in OS X, just in case.
All the Apple drivers you need to get started are on Leopard DVD and should auto run once you are booted into XP (might want to do Safe Boot first time). You'll also be wanting to install graphics drivers directly from ATI or nVidia afterwards.
You might also consider running XP in a VM like Parallels unless you play games and need native boot.
Vista Business/Ultimate 64-bit gives the Mac Pro full support for memory, 8-cores, and runs just fine.

While the screws fit into hard drive screw threads they're largely useless as the mounting holes for a 5.25" optical drive do not match that of a 3.5" hard drive. If you want to do any screwing in on the drive you will at a minimum require a 3.5" to 5.25" conversion bracket. Even then the mounting can be tricky do to the short cable and likely misalignment and the connector to that of the optical drive above it.
While the installation of a drive is not difficult the mounting of it, especially if you want it nicely done, can very well be.

Installing windows on dedicated hard drive on Mac pro

I would like to install windows vista ultimate on its own hard drive on a mac pro- but I haven't been able to do it. I tried using boot camp but when it comes time to install windows on a specific partition I receive an error message that it won't install because the drive is not formatted to NTFS. On the other hand there seems to be no way to format to NTFS either through the Mac os or the windows installation dvd prior to this step- catch 22!!
Any help is welcome.

that's odd since Vista is supporting the GPT partition type.
If I remeber correctly from another post from you, you have a full Retail version of Vista which includes the 32-bit and the 64-bit version, right ?
Are you trying to install the 64-bit version when this error occurs ?
If so, power down your Mac Pro and pull out all drive bays/harddisks leaving only the one harddisk in on which you wanna install Vista.
Then boot your MP of the Vista DVD and try to install.
(That's an old trick courtesy of 'the hatter').

Installing Windows XP NTSF hard drive in Mac Pro

I'd like to migrate from PC to Mac by simply installing the NTSF C: drive from my Windows XP PC into one of the drive bays in a Mac Pro, installing Boot Camp and then using the option key to boot into either OSX or XP. Is it that simple? I gather I would have to install Boot Camp drivers on my C: drive, and probably install drivers for the graphics card. There would be 2 drives in the Mac Pro, an OSX drive and an XP drive. I'm really not a fan of drive partitions. Or is it better to do a clean install of XP on the second internal drive?

No. The Window system file must be on the system disk in order to boot.

Can programs be installed on an external hard drive. I am running low on space. Final Cut Pro X spins off the rendering files which takes a large chunk of space. Like to at least have those rendered files on an external drive, but can find that option to make it happen.

Hello Ian. I am currently using Lion installed on a WD My Passport 500Gig drive connected to my MBPro via USB, which is still running 10.6.8. Like you I am not prepared to lose all my currently functioning Mac, but also like to see how the new OS runs before making the total switch, maybe when it gets to 10.7.2
So after you download Lion and select to run the installer it will show you which disk to install on, being the default SL drive you downloaded Lion with. But here you can click Other Disk and select the external HD. The installer will run and then boot into the external drive to complete the installation. From then on you can use Startup Disk or the Option key to select the preferred OS.

I have to agree that Windows8 is a waste of time, especially if you don't have a touch screen and compatible apps.
However, the latest version of Parallels supports running Windows8, Parallels can either run Windows from a 'virtual disk' file which can be stored wherever you want including on an external drive, or it can also be configured to run Windows from a Boot Camp partition created using Apple's Boot Camp Utility.

In order to run Boot Camp from an external drive and therefore be able to setup the Boot Camp partition on the external drive you first have to install and run OS X on the external drive. Then the Boot Camp utility will let you add the Boot Camp partition on the external drive. You cannot run OS X and the Boot Camp utility from an internal drive and try adding the Boot Camp partition to the external drive. The Boot Camp Utility only lets you add the partition on the same physical drive it is running from.
Personally I have legal XP and Windows7 licenses (currently using Windows7) and even if the Windows8 upgrade was totally free of charge I would not bother with it. I would also not bother with it at work as an IT Manager.

I recently bought a new 2TB internal sata drive for my Macpro.
The installation was easy, but I'm not sure what to do next.
For one, should I partition the drive?
My purpose for buying the drive was to use it as my go to drive for Parallels. I used to run my music studio on Windows based machines, and my older project files require a windows OS to recover. I installed Parallels so I can have my studio running Mac and Windows programs which will enable me to access my old project files and take them into my newer Protools system.
So now, I've installed my new hard drive, but I'm not sure if I should partition it....And!? I'm not sure how to designate that drive for my virtual pc on Parallels. I was able to allocate enough disk space to parallels in order to load my music software, but at this point, I'm not sure if I've just promised it disk space from my original partitioned drive (which only has about 350 GB left on it).
I would love to be able to make one internal drive available for Parallels, and the other available for the rest of my OSX. When I use Parallels, I still would like to save some extra information on the 2TB drive as well from my dekstop running OSX.

What I did on our two computers was partition the hard drive so that both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion can be used on the computers. This allowed me to be able to retain/use older applications and games on the Snow Leopard partition. This will allow you to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on the newly created partition. The Mountain Lion installer has a button that allows you to select another drive so you don't install it over Snow Leopard. I cleverly name one partition Snow Leopard and the other one Mountain Lion so I wouldn't confuse the two (I never claimed to be smart).
To partition, you need to have sufficient free hard drive space (I suggest 50 GB minimum). Boot off the Snow Leopard DVD or the disks that came with the computer and use Disk Utility to partition your hard drive into two partitions. If you plan to make Mountain Lion your primary OS, then you can reduce the size of the Snow Leopard partition so most of the free hard drive space is available for Mountain Lion. While booted off the disk, you can install Snow Leopard on the partition you want it on.
Restart and download Mountain Lion, remembering to select the correct partition before installing. I would make a copy of the installer and move it out of the Applications folder because the installer self destructs.
After getting all that sorted out, I found that while booted in Mountain Lion I could access the Snow Leopard partition. That allowed me to drag files and applications from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Applications that won't work with Mountain Lion will be grayed out with a slash through them.

Typical Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.

My old hard drive was full so I went to an apple authorized provider to install a new bigger hard drive. They also moved the data and applications from my old drive to the new one. They did not use time capsule because their way was faster. After the installation I did have to reenter the product code key for Office 2011 for the Mac. I would recommend starting over and migrate using your Time Capsule backup however DO NOT do it wirelessly, connect using an Ethernet Connection. If you upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard then follow the instructions in this video, the kid is annoying but he knows what he's doing. Clean Install Of Snow Leopard video. Once you have installed and updated Snow Leopard then update using the 10.6.8 Update Combo, then log into the Mac App Store and re-install Lion and all it's updates. My guess this is an afternoons work.

Do you have the appropriate cable to connect the external drive to to new Macbook?
If you do, the rest is easy. Connect the drive and start up the new Mac. The first steps in the setup will be to enter information about yourself, etc. etc. As you proceed you will be asked if you want to bring in data from another place. Just follow the directions, and the Mac Setup Assistant will do everything for you.
The critical part is making sure the external is corectly connected to the new computer.
