Installing Yosemite = dead screen, disaster

I have a number of Macs, and first installed Yosemite on two home machines before tackling the main one I use at work. Those installations went fine. The installation on my main machine (a 2014 Mac Pro) has been catastrophic.
I left it running overnight, came in to see a weird smear of colour across the screen. Rebooted into Safe Mode, nothing. Re-installed using Recovery Partition, similar outcome (no colour, though, just an absolutely blank screen).
In desperation, I tried remote login and discovered a perfectly normal-looking UNIX system running on this machine. I took the opportunity to delete /usr/local/texlive (mentioned by some as causing problems) and re-installed Yosemite a third time via the Recovery Partition. Everything looked fine: downloading components, restarting, installing, completing, restarting. Screen working normally the entire time.
But the result is the same. My Mac Pro with Yosemite will not drive the screen (which is an Apple Cinema Display, about 5 years old). I don't even get an Apple logo when starting up. You can hardly tell if the screen is on or off.
But it does start up, and I can ssh into it from another machine and play with UNIX.
Help please!

Similar problem running a 27" iMac only it occurs in Excel and inDesign. Hit the cell with the curser and the worksheet moves over to the right 7 or 8 cells away. Have to curser back to the cell quite frequently. This issue make the machine unusable when working with those two aps. Today I did the ultimate and completely reloaded Yosemite and the problem is still there.

  • Installing Yosemite was a disaster

Not a question, so much as a report.
I have a mid 2014 Retina Macbook Pro so I assumed installing Yosemite would be straight forward on such a new machine.
However, I was hit by 3 issues.
    1. Very slow install, progress bar stuck. I did a bit of searching on line and the advice seems to be wait it out, so I did, for 12 hours!
    2. When it did eventually restart, it would not boot, instead it became stuck on the startup screen. Waited for another 12 hours and eventually had to boot in safe mode.
Tried the whole process again with a fresh download and experienced the same outcome.
    3. Eventually, I settled on reinstalling Mavericks from my time machine, but half my apps were missing. It turns out (from more web research) that Time Machine has a bug which prevents it from doing a full back up every time. I had to trawl back to find the last complete back up, some three weeks old and reinstall that. Fortunately I keep all my docs in the cloud (Google Drive), so more recent versions could be recovered from there.
Come on Apple, I've been a loyal user and, dare I say, fan for ten years, but you've really dropped the ball with this one and in the process wasted my entire weekend, time I don't have to waste!
Yosemite looks great, but I daren't risk another attempt at an update in case the same happens again - at least I now have a working computer again.
Let me know when you have a working version available, until then how about compensation for my wasted weekend?
I would have emailed this to Applecare had I been able to find an email address, so this forum has had to do.

  • Installing Yosemite on iMac 2013 hangs with status bar midway

Trying to install Yosemite, but screen just displays a white screen with apple logo and the status bar is around 50 %
been running for about 4.5 hrs, will leave overnight, but then what if no joy.
I Thought that Apple was good over these types of things, it is a Apple iMac 27" 2012 machine with 8Gb Ram.

If you use the power button to shut down and then restart does it boot?  menu/About This Mac - what is installed?
Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite
    Revert Yosemite to Mavericks
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

16 mo young Mac Pro will not turn on. Dead. Why. No problems ever! Installed Yosemite and did not boot up after. Did that kill it? To young to die. What happened?what do I do now??????? Help!

Note that you don't have a Mac Pro as stated. Your profile says you have a MacBook Pro. Please clarify as they are entirely different computers. If nothing below works for you, then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Yosemite downloaded and installed than Black screen.  all we have is a black screen. Traveling in Indonesia so no Apple store nearby. The screen does not respond to reboot in safe mode. Can anyone help to get the Mac Book Pro up and running again?

We are in indonesia travelling and after downloading and installing Yosemite, on our next restart the screen went black and responds to nothing. Tried to reboot (shift key) in safe mode after first crashing the system but nothing responds except for the opening chime. Toal disaster so any help will be greatly appreciated. Judging by the comments I have read, Yosemite seems to have many issues for us to look forward to, if and when we can bring back the Mac Book Pro to life.

See if you can boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down).  There you can reinstall the system.

I tried to install yosemite yesterday and my computer goes through the whole installation process and then to a blank white screen.  I've rebooted, I've reinstalled several times and get the same result.  Two days wasted and I can't use my computer!!

I don't know if you've already resolved your problem, but I had the same thing, it took me 6 hours to fix it. I had the exact same as you, installed the update and then it went to a white screen. After trying start up holding down cmmd r or holding down the alt key to try to install it again, nothing worked, same result every time. Then an angel came to me here somewhere but I can't find it now to thank him. Start in safe mode, press shift once you hear the start up chime and hold it down until you hear it again. Installation completion box came up and it was working. turn off computer and start up again normally and all is well. Except my final cut pro x doesn't work with it, have to update that now too. same as when I updated to mavericks.
    Hope this helps.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I've had the same issue and despite clearing the PRAM and powering on and off repeatedly this is what has (at least temporarily) resolved my issue:
I've done this 3 times and sometimes it works right off the jump other times I've had to wait a bit and try again or power off and try again, once the start up screen is frozen hit Command : Option : Shift : Esc and a window should pop up "You restarted because of a problem..." from there you can go to your desktop. I haven't found an actual resolution to fix the problem but this does get you into your computer.
    Hope this helps!
