Installing Yosemite from USB to a new (unformatted) USB?

Hey everyone!
Just ordered a new SSD to try and breathe some life back into my wife's Late 2008 Macbook. As she was planning on doing a clean install anyway, I didn't bother picking up cloning equipment and just planned to install Yosemite direct from a USB. Unfortunately I hadn't thought about how I would actually format the SSD to Mac OS Extended so I'm wondering if it's possible to do that from the USB installer or if there is something like gParted for Mac that will allow me to format the drive from a USB environment. Or do I just need to go out and pick up housing for the SSD and format it as an external drive?

I think it's possible to install Yosemite on internal SSD from USB installer.

  • Installing Yosemite from USB - OS X Utilities or OS X Installer

I have created a USB memory stick to do a clean install of Yosemite.  Having created the USB memory stick, I have booted the MacBook (late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro) with the Option key held down.  Each time, this gives me the option to boot from the internal disk or the USB memory key.  I select the USB memory stick.
The odd thing is, sometimes the MacBook boots in to OS X Utilities.  This shows a window from which you can select Disk Utility, install OS X etc.  However, other times it boots in to OS X Installer.  There is a menu at the top of the screen from which you can run Disk Utility.
Not sure about this, but I think the first time I boot from a newly-created USB memory stick, it loads in to OS X Utilities, and subsequent boots load the OS X Installer.  If I recreate the key, it loads OS X Utilities.
    Two questions come to mind:
    1. Why does it do this?
    2. Does it matter which way Yosemite is installed?
    Thanks for any advice.

  • Can I switch out a hard drive for an SSD without having to clone the existing hard drive, and then install Yosemite from an USB Boot Drive onto the new SSD?

Can I simply replace a hard drive with a new SSD and just install Yosemite from a USB boot drive onto the SSD? I recently bought a used MBP and it has absolutely no files on it except for the OS, and so I'm assuming I don't need to clone the current hard drive as I can just reinstall the OS onto the new SSD.

    Thanks.
Just a quick follow up question, is formatting the SSD with HFS+ done in Disk Utility?...
It's possible that the SSD will be set up for use on a PC, which means it will have a Master Boot Record partition table rather than a GUID Partition Table, which is what Yosemite needs. In Disk Utility, select the SSD and click the Partition button. Create a new Partition Layout and click the Options... button at the bottom. You'll likely see MBR is selected. Choose GUID instead and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the Format.

  • How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1

How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1 ?
My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
    - My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:
    Starting bootmgr.efi
    Error: Unsupported while loading bootmgr.efi
I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:
    rEFIt - Booting Legacy OS
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load option ´USB´
Error: Not found returned from legacy loader
    Error: Not found from LocateDevicePath
    (x 9 times)
Error: Load Error while (re)opening our installation volume
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting
(Hey Apple please send out a updated firmware that fix this issue?!)
So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ?  Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.
This is 5 page thread, so a little more 'meat' to it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3410900?start=60&tstart=0
And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a  mac-model device ID string that specifies yes.  An unnecessary hurdle.

  • How to get iPhoto and iTunes to a clean installed Yosemite from Time Machine

I wiped the Hard Drive and clean installed to OS X Yosemite. For Some reason, some of my Time Machine back ups disappeared or got deleted and it wasn't even full. I had back ups from 2011 and now it only starts from 2013 of June.
Next....when I try to restore my other apps(like iPhoto and my iTunes) I doesn't give that warp space effect in the background. It gives me the window layer effect but I just see the same mountain background on the desktop as the default Yosemite(unless thats how its suppose to look like that?) I can't restore using Time Machine because the little lines at the right are red (see screen shot) and it won't let me restore, and if i go back by using the arrows, if freezes. So,
I don't know how to install the old iTunes and iPhoto on my existing clean installed Yosemite from my Time Machine.
    Can someone help me?

@ LarryHN Thank you ver much for you help I understand now that you just can't copy over the old library(got it)
I had the latest version of iPhoto before I cleaned installed.

    Hello mmarti,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please ensure you are following the Boot Camp installation guide, as you should be selecting the partition named "BOOTCAMP" when you are at the Windows installer screen.  See page 6 of the following PDF:

My two old white MacBooks run perfect with Snow leopard, but my 2011 17" i7 Macbook Pro is a dead slug with yosimite installed.
Tried the start with C held down, also with option held down.  All it does is beeps at me three times, then again three times.....
I want to remove yosimite and install Snow leopard from dvd as yosimite runs worse than a Windows OS.
Can it be done, what do I need to do please?
Examples of faults,  even with a 1tb solid state drive and 16 gig of ram, it is incredibly slow.  Took four hours to install Logic 8 last night, I still have to reinstall logic 9 upgrade.   On the White MacBooks I got both 8 and 9 installed in under an hour and a half all up.
Beeping on startup means failed RAM.
Slowness is usually caused by incompatible third-party system modifications.

  • Cant install spore from USB backup disk on new IMACS that have no DVD drive.

I am trying to test Spore on my father's new Imac but it will not let me install.
I copied the whole DVD content on a portable USB drive and I can install it fine from there via my own MAC but from my father's new IMAC 2012 that has no DVD drive I am greeted by the error.
"could not verify the integrity of the installer"
    any ideas why?

Actually I resolved the issue. My system is 10.7 not Mountain Lion.
I resolved the issue by moving all the content to the root of the portable drive: they were in a subfolder called SPORE which caused the installation to be unrecognizable.
    Thanks for helping !

  • Dead HDD, installing Yosemite from fresh.

    Alright, here we go.
Recently, the HDD in my Mid 2012 Non Retina 13'' MBP, my hard drive died. I got the flashing question mark and whatnot, tried all solutions online to resurrect it, but to no avail.
I'm prepared to purchase a new drive, but the issue is, I need a Yosemite installer to reinstall the OS on the new drive. How do I go about downloading Yosemite to mount onto a USB for installation, if I don't have a working Mac to download it off the store with?
Any help is greatly appreciated, as it seems that I wont be able to get this going again.
    Cheers

If you don't have another Mac you can access your App Store account from, download Yosemite, and create a bootable installer from it, then you need to boot into Internet Recovery Mode (Command+Option+R).
First use Disk Utility to set up the drive. Use the Partition tab to make sure the drive is GUID, then setup how ever many partitions you want and format them as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Quit Disk Utility and choose to install OS X. The version of OS X your Mac came with will be installed. Which for your model, with be Lion, 10.7.x. Once that's installed, you can download and install Yosemite.

  • I installed Yosemite from Mountain Lion and my photos have disappeared.  How do I recover?

I installed Yosemite on my iMac (late 2009, storage 8GB, processor 2.8 GHz Intel core i7).  previously using Mountain Lion (10.8.2)  I had stored many photos on iPhoto that weren't on the Cloud.  Now I cannot access these photos.  How do I recover?

Now I cannot access these photos.
You need to update to iPhoto 9.6.1. Only that is fully compatible with MacOS X 10.10.3.
You can no longer buy iPhoto from the App Store anywhere, and also not update it from the "Updates" tab of the App Store. You can however reinstall it, if it is showing among your Purchases at the App Store and associated with your AppleID.
Sign into the App Store and look at the Purchases tab.  If you do not see iPhoto there, try to unhide your Purchases as described on this page:   Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support
If iPhoto shows on your Purchases tab, reinstall as described in this User Tip:
Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities
The main idea is to move the incompatible iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the App Store by pressing ⌘R, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.
So move iPhoto to the Trash (don't empty the Trash), relaunch the App Store. The button to the right if iPhoto should change to Install on the "Purchases" tab.
Alternately, you could migrate your iPhoto library to the new Photos.app.
When you launch Photos, it will try to migrate your iphoto Library, if it can find the library.  Where is your iPhoto Library stored? If it is in your Pictures folder, simply drag the iPhoto Library to the Phots icon in your Dock to migrate it to Photos.
Photos will make a migrated copy, so you still can use your iPhoto Library with iPhoto.
