Installling Leopard on eMac Power G4

I have an eMac Power PC G4 1.42mhz 1gb RAM, will it run?
As my D drive is broken I copied Leopard Setup into my computer and created a *.dmg. Is it possible to copy it to a flashdrive and then boot it from there holding C???
I've attempted some of these, but somehow when i'm copying the *.dmg to the flashdrive i get the error: "An error ocurred while copying files."
What are other alternatives to install Leopard?

Your eMac probably can't boot from a USB drive anyway.
Also, the only way to duplicate the Leopard install disc is to use Disk Utility. Could you outline the steps you followed to create your .dmg file?
Is this a retail copy of Leopard or a gray disc that came with another machine?
Do you have another Mac handy?

  • Upgrade from tiger to leopard on a power mac G?

can i upgrade from tiger to leopard on a power mac G5?

Yes, however, read about the pitfalls below.
Mac OS X 10.5 was release October 26, 2007.  Its 10.5.8 update is the newest operating system available for PowerPC Macs that meet its requirements.  It is available occasionally by calling Apple online store's phone number, even though the website does not show it.  Many want to upgrade to Leopard because of i-Devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod) bought saying iTunes 10 or later is recommended.  To check if that really is required, look at the i-Device requirements section of this tip
If your Mac is Intel, and running 10.4.11 or earlier, and meets the hardware requirements of 10.6, a less expensive upgrade solution is to upgrade to 10.6 directly.  No need to upgrade to 10.5 unless your software won't run in 10.6.
Software listed for Intel Mac and PowerPC Macs can run on 10.5 for the platform indicated in the link. For Leopard you need
867 Mhz on a single processor or faster (1 Ghz and higher are faster).
256 MB of RAM (preferably 512MB of more based on arbitrary experience).
9 GB of hard disk space (arbitrary experience adds another 15%) free.
Macs newer than August 28, 2009 can't run Leopard, and require a minimum of Snow Leopard.
Dual booting Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X 10.5, check this tip:https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1757
Classic is not compatible with 10.5.  10.4.11 on a PowerPC Mac or earlier is needed for Classic.
Mac OS X 10.5 is the earliest version of Mac OS X that will run iTunes 10.  This is necessary for numerous i-Devices (iPad, iPhone, and iPods).  To find out which require it, see this article
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_version_history
Should you require only iTunes 9, and are running a minimum of 10.4, backup your data at least twice, check in Apple menu -> About This Mac if you have a G3, G4, G5 (which is PowerPC), or Intel Core (which is Intel) make sure you are running 10.4.11 PowerPC or 10.4.11 Intel (depending on the aforementioned processors), and download iTunes 9.2.1.  The only reason you should upgrade to 10.5 is if some other software is required.
Boot Camp is only available on Intel Macs with 10.5 and higher.
Time Machine backup software first appeared in 10.5
You have several options of installation which are explained here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2209
All of which I recommend you backup your data at least twice before upgrading, and have sufficient disk space to install, and all your third party applications and drivers are known to be Leopard compatible, and after backing up your data you dismount and disconnect all but Apple keyboard and mouse and if there is an external display, that too. And just before you install repair permissions.
If any of the above terms confuse you, ask on the Discussions board what they mean, and one of the people who knows will gladly assist you.
You must use the installer disc that looks like *, and does not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM, if you choose to upgrade to Leopard.

  • EMac Power PC G4 won't start up

I just bought an iPod and tried to start it up with my eMac Power PC G4 running 10.3.9. It wouldn't work and soon after I encountered the following start-up probelm:
The computer comes and I get the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel (NOT the colored spinning disc but the gray spinning wheel). Start-up does not progress past this point.
I tried to reinstall the earlier version that came with my computer but this also crashed. I've also tried Disk Utility and have got some error messages.
I have a lot of info I do not want to lose. What can I do?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

    Welcome To  Discussions steverooth!
"I have a lot of info I do not want to lose."
    Do you have a backup?
"I tried to reinstall the earlier version that came with my computer but this also crashed."
Hopefully this has not further compromised your data.
Do you know what size the Hard Drive is, and how much space is available?
Disconnect all peripherals, except the keyboard & mouse,
Run Repair Disk, and report the results here.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

I need to connect a eMac - power mac 6,4 -PowerPC G4 (1.1) to the internet wirelessly  running mac osx 10.4.11.
Can anyone advise me please. I have done some research and think a USB adapter is the best option as I doubt the eMac will be able to take a card but the software will have to be able to run on tiger.

    Check this one out:

Might be an idea to ask them for confirmaion that it will work with your Mac, but it should do!

  • Impossible d'installer leopard

Heureux possesseur d'un mac book pro 2,16 ghz; acheté neuf au moins de janvier 2007
    j'ai voulu migrer vers leopard et la catastrophe: impossible d'installer leopard (version familliale acheter chez apple). pas de souci pour l'installation sur mon i mac 24;
    j ai essayé

    For english people
I succeed, apparently to install Mac OS 10.5 on my Mac Book Pro. After three false tries and try areturn to 10.4, advised by a apple'technician.
But, by the way, I lost all mys files and configuration, cookies, adresses, and so on.
    Ten years works in ashes?
I hope there will be solution, one sufficient!
But be very cautions when installing léopard.Save all yours files and configuration on a hard disk.

  • Is there a final verdict on Leopard and eMacs?? (1.42 ghz versions)

I've read nearly every upgrade post here about Leopard and eMacs and for the life of me I don't get the impression that there is a correct answer on this upgrade. It seems that the eMac is too close to the minimum requirements to run Leopard with any degree of comfort. True? Not many success stories here.

I have a 1.25 GHz version. I was running 10.3 and started to get frustrated with some web sites not working on the older version of Safari. Also some of the recent upgrades to adobe etc weren't supported by 10.3. As a short fix I downloaded the Camino browser. This solved a lot of the surfing problems. I finally decided to bite the bullet and bought the Mac Box set of Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09.
At the risk of sounding negative I have had nothing but problems since. This may all be down to my own incompetence (I am not technically minded) or down to the fact that my eMac is reaching the end of it's days. Either way I am now facing up to the fact that I may have to go and buy another computer. I've had problems with Mail (I now know this to be a known problem, see forums for fix). A kernal panic, resulting in an erase and reinstall. I am now suffering from very slow performance across all applications with more spinning beach ball than I've ever witnessed. I've scoured the forums for help and have tried everything within my limited technical ability. Repaired disk and permissions, ran the hardware test, created a new user, checked activity monitor. My hard disk is less than 50% utilised and I have 1 GB of RAM. All very disappointing. I was hoping that Leopard would blow the rest of my family away and that I would be in a good position to pitch for a new Mac! Now I'm not so sure.
I apologise for such a disappointing post and I hope you have better luck!

  • Emac power button

hi everyone i just broke my emacs power button when ii was upgrading the hd and the entire cord was ripped in half and need a way of turning it on by monday
    thanks

I'm in WA state, even if time weren't of the essence, freight is hefty on eMacs, I wonder if there's one closer cheaper than freight?

  • EMac power button broken off retaining ring!

Well, we managed soldered the broken power button cable I mentioned back onto the logic board (we did this by cutting off the connector and permanently soldering the cables to the correct spots on the board, BUT, the power button itself is now broken! Here are pics...
    http://pics.livejournal.com/wile_e2005/pic/00056a89/
    Behind the button.
    http://pics.livejournal.com/wile_e2005/pic/00057fq6/
    Retaining ring.
The cable is fine, but now it's the button that is the problem! Does this need to be soldered back on too, or is there some other way? Or should I shell out $20 for a new eMac power button?
It may be the shortened cable that caused this, and I am not sure how this can be worked around.

Is there a way to start the eMac WITHOUT the power drive temporarily? According to this quote from another website...
{quote} The only way to turn it on now is to place a wire (I used a wire twist tie.) that connects the Black and Red leads on the connector for the power button. This is done by placing the wire on the top of the connector where you can see metal showing. This will turn on the Mac. I would recommend turning on the option to have the mac reboot after a power failure and keep it plugged into a power strip that you turn off. (I use mine as a server so I never usually turn it off unless I need to do maintenance.)
So in other words, does this mean I could put a twist tie on the white connector thingy that goes to the power button retainer ring? Or is it more complicated than that?

  • Install Leopard on eMac (USB 2.0)

    Hi
I would like to install Leopard on my eMac (USB 2.0) but it doesn't read dual layer DVDs so my Leopard disc gets spat back out by the eMac.
Is there another method that will allow me to install Leopard on it?

What you can do is this. Get a Firewire external drive. Clone the installer DVD to the external drive then boot the computer from the external drive and install OS X. The Firewire drive needs to be partitioned using APM and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. To clone:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external Firewire drive. Source means the installer DVD.
This can be done on your MBP because it does not require booting the DVD.

  • Getting Leopard onto eMac?!

    Hi guys!
I have a problem that's troubling me. My eMac has a DVD drive that reads normal DVD's and burns CD's only. It cannot burn DVD's or read DVD-DL. So by trying to install Leopard, it would only eject the disk. With a 3rd party external DVD drive it wouldn't recognize it when it boots. So I need an alternative: can I use the MacBook Air's External Superdrive? Or is there another way?
I know the explanation was confusing so I appreciate your help guys!

So I need an alternative: can I use the MacBook Air's External Superdrive?
I don't think so. That drive was for "only" the MB Air and the only reports I've seen on using it for other models of Macs said it works on some Intel Macs, never PPC Macs (like the eMac).
If you get an external drive, it must have FireWire (IEEE 1394) connectivity to be bootable on older Macs.
Before spending a lot of money, I'd spend a little money for a CD/DVD lens cleaning kit. I can't begin to tell you how many posters around here have said a tech told them a drive was defective and had to be replaced, only to find that a simple cleaning restored sanity.
If cleaning does not restore optical drive function, you can use another Mac with a Firewire port and a working optical drive to act as an external drive via FireWire Target Disk Mode ( or FWTDM). For what you want to do, you would put the install DVD (it is full retail--not gray--right?) in the drive of the other computer and restart that computer while holding the "t" key until you see as screen that looks like this:
    !http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSiSbNROIalji22ZDDf5rXDkyP9rQqPODw7ftOu g7IuWeyyiruF!
Then connect your eMac to the other computer with a Firewire cable (if the other computer is very new, you may need a FW400 to FW800 cable or cable adaptor). Restart your eMac with the option key depressed and wait for Startup Manager come up (this can take a few minutes so don't rush). Select the icon for the installation disk and, once booted, you should be able to install normally.

  • NEW INSTALL OF LEOPARD ON eMac G4 800

    eMac G4 800, 800MHz, 256 MB RAM, 1.0 GB Memory, 60 GB HD
HD zeroed, starting from fresh;  had previously installed successfully from Panther, vets 10.4.9, using Leopard Assist.
Tried many times now using Leopard Assist to adjust the clock speed in Open Firmware, but after it has started to install, I get the "Cannot install on this computer" message.  Or the flashing ? mark/Mac icon.  I tried installing Jaguar / 10.2 but I could not "see" the Leopard disc in the finder.  I could not restart from the disc in the optical drive (holding "C" down).
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Novice, 68 years.

    According to specs:
    Maximum OS
    Mac OS X 10.4.11 (800 MHz) Mac OS X 10.5.8 (1.0 GHz)
So, you need a Tiger installer disc.

  • Leopard on eMac

Hi! Someone I know has an eMac. He wants to install Leopard, but is unsure how the installation works. Should he format the hard-drive, or not? Or will it automatically format it? He just wants the choice for the best performance. Will formatting or not formatting make a difference in performance? Also, he has a dreaded PC he would like to back his stuff up on. Can he? Thanks, this lazy guy made me post this!

Should he format the hard-drive, or not?
Assuming that eMac is capable of running Leopard, I like to install a major system upgrade to a cleanly wiped and formatted partition. That eliminates any preexisting problems with the current install being left behind. If he has a lot of files already on the computer and no way to back them up (not good), then an Archive and Install option is available. CAVEAT!: Before doing an A&I, he must make certain that his currently installed OS is healthy and running properly.
    Leopard comes only on DVD disks. Some eMacs do not have a DVD-compatible optical drive. That's one reason why Ian's recommendation to post complete specs is so important;

  • I'm using an eMac power cord on an iMac G5 and the screen is a blue tinted color. No true colors are displayed.

I just realized I was using an eMac powercord on my G5 iMac.
Make a difference at all? Does it screw up my computer?
I have a weird screen problem anything to do with this?

I can't see how that would make a difference.  But use the proper power cord for the iMac, if you have it.
To see if this is software or settings related, if you have a way to boot from a different system, such as a Mac OS X installation disk, start up from that other system and see if you still have the "blue tinted color."
If the problem recurs, you should do these two procedures to Reset PRAM and Reset SMU, to see if there is any improvement
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1767
When you do the Reset SMU procedure, if you have been connecting the power cord to an old or over-crowded power strip (surge suppressor), try connecting it to a wall outlet by itself, to see if that makes any difference.
If that does not help, there may be a hardware-related problem.

  • Leopard and eMac 1.25 GHz - No Probs!

Just wanted to post, in case you own an eMac and are afraid of upgrading to Leopard as much I was. I had read all kinds of horror stories about slow machines, software not working, hard drive crashes, etc. so I waited to upgrade to Leopard until I could take it no more.
I am so happy I upgraded to Leopard! My eMac is so much faster now. Spotlight used to be unusable as it was dead slow--now search is instantaneous! Even dashboard, which was a pig under Tiger is now actually usable on this machine! Everything is noticeably faster.
I had no problems updating using Archive and Install (the "last minute" took about a half hour, though). It took about three hours for Spotlight to rebuild after the install and during that time the machine was operating at 100%, so plan to leave the machine alone for a bit afterwards as it will run very slow during that time.
I deactivated my Adobe CS2 suite before upgrading and reactivated afterwards, and all the apps work great! The only software I lost was my Canon LIDE 30 scanner driver, which is not compatible, but I am using third party software in place of it and it works great too. Office 2004, Toast 7.1.3, and FileMaker Pro 9 are my other main apps and they came through great.

I was able to do it "unsupported" on a 700MHz eMac, no probs, Front Row, Spaces, and Time Machine works! Its slow on software update installer, very.

  • I just updated my OS to Leopard and know Power Point from my office suite is opening, or tries to after a reboot and hangs when you try to open it.

Does any one know of any similar issues.
