Installmac malware solution?

I had a problem with my browsers standard search engine being overtaken by "installmac" after installing something that looked like an update of Toast on my computer. I removed it again by using the uninstall program from installmac.com. Do anyone know if I am in the clear now since it is the same company that supplied the malware and the solution. What sort company is Installmac - it looks legit - but is it?

Hi Topher
I have been looking into the browser history and in fact I got the installmac-"malware" at this site:
http://toast-titanium.soft32.com/free-download/
And I installed this file:
installtoasttitanium.dmg
I wasn't thinking ;-)
That gave me the installmac redirect on all my google searches.
After having read about solutions on the net I opted for an Uninstall on the macinstall homepage.
I ran the commands you have provided in Terminal and got these answers:

  • Virus/Malware Solution Recommended For Flash Zero Day Breach

Can anyone recommend a virus/malware protection solution.  I attempted to download adobe flash this morning and now malware has control of my browser and is sending a page with an 866 number to call.  My IT tech called the number and it is an India call center and they want remote access to your machine.  I have installed several different malware packages and none of them can find the files that are causing this problem.  I am using a MAC with OSX 10.10.

Aaaahhhh yes... remember when an entire day could by without news of a breach or hack or targeted attack? Yeah... neither do I.It will probably shock you all to hear that the Symantec Security Response team dropped a new blog over the weekend outlining a Zero-Day vulnerability in Adobe Flash player. • Lenovo Yoga with Windows 8 Pro, Office 2013 and Visual Studio

For you developer types, I just wanted to post a message and let you know my experience with Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 as a development machine. I bought Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 from Bestbuy for $999.99. As expected, it came with a crap ton of bloatware installed by Lenovo.
Here is a summary of what I did to it (I take no responsilibity for accuracy of below information. You are on your own if you decide to follow them. I am just putting this down from my memory so that I can look it up in the future if I ever need to do this again).
    INITIAL CLEANUP
Installed Lenovo hotfix for partition cleanup/merging: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS033035
    Installed Lenovo Touchpad driver fix.
CAUTION: I take no responsibility for below steps. I am writing them from memory and if you decide to follow them and end up making your machine unusable, you are on your own as Lenovo might not honor your warranty.
BACK UP ENTIRE DISK (requires an empty USB flash drive for booting and another external USB drive for backup)
Copied Drivers from D_Backup folder to the external USB hard drive (plugged into USB 3.0 port).
Installed Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 Free: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/
Created Paragon Backup & Recovery boot USB flash drive with default Linux recovery environment option (flash drive plugged into USB 2.0 port).
    Shutdown Lenovo Yoga.
Plugged in the Paragon Backup & Recovery boot USB flash drive (USB 2.0 port).
Pressed the one key recovery button (next to power button). Went to BIOS.
In the BIOS, enabled Legacay mode and made Legacy high priority and saved the changes.
The machine booted into Paragon Backup & Recovery mode. From there, made a backup of entire disk to the external USB hard drive.
Shut down the machine, pressed the one key recovery button (next to power button). Went to BIOS. Turned off Legacy mode and switched back to UEFI boot mode and saved the changes and restarted the machine.
Logged into the machine and verified that everything was good and checked the external USB drive to verify that the backup image was present.
MAKE WINDOWS 8 PRO BOOT USB FLASH DRIVE (requires a second empty USB flash drive and a second computer with Windows 7. This USB Flash Drive has to be between 4GB to 32GB as Windows won't format 64GB flash drives to FAT32 mode)
(Note: I installed Windows 8 Pro in UEFI mode. See http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/install-windows-8-usb.htm)
You need a licensed ISO image of Windows 8 Professional Full version (not the upgrade version) from your MSDN or Technet subscription or create an ISO from the Windows 8 Pro full version DVD.
Download Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool on the computer with windows 7.
Plug in the second empty USB flash drive (has to be at least 4GB but less than 32GB) into the computer with Windows 7.
Using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool and the ISO file, create the Windows 8 Pro bootable USB Flash drive.
Create a new folder on your computer disk, for example, C:\WIN8USB.
Copy all the files from your USB flash drive to the newly created folder (created in the previous step).
Right click on the USB drive icon in Computer window and select “Format…” from the context menu. Make sure you select “FAT32 (Default)” in “File system” drop down menu. Click “Start” and wait till the drive gets formatted. This step is needed because NTFS is not readable by BIOS in UEFI boot mode. During formatting, MBR is preserved so the thumbdrive is still bootable.
Copy all the files from the folder you created earlier (C:\WIN8USB, for example) to the formatted drive. Your Windows 8 installation USB drive is ready to install in UEFI mode.
    WIPE THE DISK PARTITIONS
Shut down the machine, pressed the one key recovery button (next to power button). Went to BIOS, enabled Legacay mode and made Legacy high priority and saved the changes.
Booted into Paragon Backup & Recovery boot USB flash drive again. This time, I deleted all partitions on the primary disk (Disk 0). CAUTION: This WILL wipe your hard disk and will make your machine unusable!!!
Shut down the machine, pressed the one key recovery button (next to power button). Went to BIOS. Turned off Legacy mode and switched back to UEFI boot mode and saved the changes and shut down the machine.
At this point, the disk is wiped clean. All factory installed software and recovery partitions are gone!!!
    INSTALL WINDOWS 8 PRO
Plug in the USB Flash Drive with Windows 8 Pro install files.
Windows 8 Installer would show the unallocated disk space. I can't remember the exact details but either I had to click on Delete or New to delete and then create a new GPT partition. The entire partition was about 119GB.
From that point, follow the Windows 8 Pro installation steps.
After booting up into Windows 8 Pro, plug the external USB drive that had the drivers folder backed up from D_backups.
Install all the drivers from this folder (I was able to install everything except for one Intel fast boot one because of missing partition but my Yoga still boots up just as fast).
Go to device manager to check and everything should be good now.
    Run Windows Update.
You should now have about 101GB free on C: drive!!
INSTALL VISUAL STUDIO, SQL SERVER and OFFICE 2013 ON LENOVO YOGA 13
I installed the following in that order:
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer edition (I installed all components, everything!). Then I installed latest service pack.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 (I installed all components, everything!). Then I installed latest service pack.
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Developer edition(I installed all components, everything!). Then I installed latest service pack.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2012(I installed all components, everything!)
I ran Windows update and also installed Nov 2012 updates of SQL Server Data tools.
I then installed Office 2013 Pro Plus.
MAKE LENOVO YOGA 13 MORE SECURE
Go to Control Panel and enable Windows Defender (it is included by default in Windows 8 and is anti-virus and anti-malware solution)
Enable full hard-disk encryption using BitLocker feature of Windows 8 Pro. Since Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 doesn't have hardware TPM, you have to enable password based option. For this, follow the steps here: http://rics.partners.org/show_article.php?id=274.
Basically, you go to GPEDIT.MSC and Open Computer Configuration => Administrative Templates => Windows Components => BitLocker Drive Encryption => Operating System Drives. From the right pane double-click "Require additional authentication at startup. Select Enabled radio button and check the box for "Allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM...". Click OK and close the policy editor. Then Right-click your C drive in the Computer folder, click Turn on BitLocker. Then select Enter a password instead of USB option. Then provide a strong password (make sure to write it down and put it in a SAFE place, if you lose the password, no one can boot into your hard disk). Then select Save to a file and save it to the External Drive. Select "Encrypt entire drive...", click Next. When this is done, you will get a pop-up on the lower-right a prompt to restart the computer. Restart your PC. Enter the encryption password created earlier. If you are successful in getting into Windows, you're all set.
I also hooked up to Skydrive and used BoxCryptor to encrypt my files in cloud.
The available free disk space should now be about 54GB.
I verified that Lenovo Yoga 13 works like a champ with no slowdown with Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2012 and SQL Server Management Studio open simultaneously and Bitlocker enabled!
The keyboard right SHIFT key is small but other than that, it can work as a great portable development machine and Microsoft Reader is great for reading PDF eBooks.
So if you are a Developer on Microsoft platform, go right ahead. Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 is great for running Visual Studio 2010 and Visual Studio 2012 (1600x900 resolution is totally usable) while on the move. Since I have only had this machine for a few days, I can't tell much about the long term reliability.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you for posting this. I am in this exact situation. I purchased a yoga 13, and installed Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Phone. As it turns out, the Windows Phone Emulator ONLY works in a Windows 8 Pro environment. Since the Yoga doesn't have a disc drive, I shared my W7 computer's cd drive, then put in Windows 8 Pro, so that it could install onto the Yoga. Well, after the installation was done, I tried running my program again and ran into the same issue. It prompted me that my environment must be Windows 8 Pro! I thought that Windows 8 Pro already installed but, what confuses me is that I see no indication that Windows 8 Pro installed. When I go to the System Window, it reads: "Windows 8". Should it read Windows 8 Pro?
Ultimately, I'd like to know, are you able to execute the Windows Phone Emulator? I'm not sure as to whether the Yoga has the hardware capability (needs to be SLAT enabled or something like that?), I HOPE it is able to, and judging by your post, it seems like it but I'd love to know your perspective on my approach.
Please let me know if this makes sense, as I'm new to this kind of thing but really want to start development for Windows Phone.

  • "Listening" port open?

I have a 13" MacBook Pro, i5 MD101LL/A.  I installed 4Shadow security monitoring app.  It gave me a warning that port 1492 was open and in "listening" mode.  Since it is showing this as a threat, should I try to block or close this port?  Not long ago I got a case of "Installmac" malware on my Mac which I believe I successfully cleaned off, but now I'm paranoid about all these things, like a "listening" port being open.
    Many thanks!

  • Help with anti-virus programs, PLEASE!

New Lenovo and it won't allow me to install AVG anti-virus. Download completed but when trying to install, after hours of waiting, I get an error message saying something about Microsoft, so I presume it's the bully response trying to make me accept Norton or some other anti-virus software they are pushing which I don't want.
How to make Lenovo accept MY choice of anti-virus software?
Moderator Note: Edited subject to match content.

    Hello,
I have never had a problem installing another antivirus program onto a ThinkPad (or ThinkCentre) computer, so I think this may be some sort of error message about a missing component or patch level.  Here is what I would suggest that you try:
Download, and have ready to run, the Symantec Norton Removal Tool (assuming your computer came with a Symantec product).  If your computer came with a McAfee product, download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool, instead.
Download the full package for the latest version of your prefered anti-malware solution.
Run Microsoft Windows Update on the computer to ensure it is
up-to-date with respect to all know operating system service packs,
hot-fixes and updates.  Install the optional components, too.  Several
reboots may be required before the computer is fully updated.
After the computer is updated, uninstall the currently-installed anti-malware program via the Program ands Features Control Panel applet (filename: APPWIZ.CPL).  A reboot will likely be required to complete uninstallation.
Run the appropriate Removal Tool from step #1 to remove any orphaned drivers, services or leftover registry entries from the now-uninstalled anti-malware program.  Again, a reboot may be required to finish the operation.
Begin installation of your preferred security software.
At this point, you should now have your security software installed on your Lenovo computer.

  • Photoshop CS5 crashing constantly ASUS laptop Windows 8

I installed CS5 on new ASUS laptop a few months ago, running Windows 8. It ran fine for a while and then started crashing Photoshop.
    Unexpectedly quit. Sometimes InDesign.
The crashing has gotten increasingly worse to the point where I cannot use Photoshop for more than a few minutes,
have to keep saving, saving, saving.
Am uninstalling now but am wondering if there was something else I should have done?
Perhaps Windows 8 only wants CS6? or CC? Up until now I have always been a mac person, so I'm out of my depth here.
    Thanks anybody.

The first box implies your McAfee security software is faulting.  If you can, try disabling it and see if the problem is resolved.
Over time I've read a lot about McAfee software that makes me think it should be removed and thrown away.  There are better anti-malware solutions available.

  • Is It Me or Have The Windows Updates Slowed Down?

I haven't seen any new Windows Updates since weeks ago, basically those that came in right after I installed Windows 8.1 from disc.
I'm sure I have it set up correctly, but Windows Update has simply been reporting that there are none available.  I have a 3rd party anti-malware solution, so I don't expect to get regular Windows Defender updates.
This seems atypical; I had been getting Windows 7 updates pretty regularly (bi-weekly at least, if not weekly) before installing Windows 8.1.  Usually updates spark a reboot, but I've been able to run Windows 8.1 now for 17 days without an
    update.
Is Microsoft purposefully batching them up for one big update at or something?  Maybe trying to show how perfect the 8.1 release is by not sending out a bunch of updates?
Or maybe everyone worked so hard to get Windows 8.1 out that they are all on extended vacations?

Thanks for confirming I'm not alone, guys.
I hear you about the Bing Desktop stuff, David.  I don't want it either and I've done likewise - hidden those updates.
Matter of fact, I only want Windows Updates when I ask for them, and thus I have configured it to download only when I ask it - yet I noticed in my Reliability Monitor log that yesterday
Microsoft.BingHealthAndFitness claims to have successfully downloaded and installed itself at 7:11pm.  I wonder if there's stuff over on the Start screen that I need to delete or disable.
I don't like updaters that don't respect the user's settings.  That's just intrusive.  Someone is forgetting who owns the computer.

  • Windows 8 Consumer Preview Downloads Now Available

For those of you interested in getting an early handle on what Windows 8 has in store, Microsoft has made the much anticipated Consumer Preview version available today...  Note that this is free, "beta" level software, and WILL expire, so don't expect to just download and use it forever.  Ultimately they're going to charge $$$ for it.
    Main page:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/consumer-preview
    ISO images available:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso
Windows 8 Server available to Technet subscribers:  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/hh442904
I'm in the process of downloading ISO images now, and will be setting up VMware virtual machines in which to test the various versions.  I will be interested to see how Photoshop works with it (it mostly worked with the Windows 8 Developer Preview version, with just a few glitches).
Note that these downloads are all quite huge (multiple gigabytes).
    -Noel

Generally speaking, Microsoft seems to be trying to bridge the "touch screen tablet" market with the "desktop computer" market, all in the name of opening up their own shiny new App Store.  I don't know whether they're going to pull it off, but Apple has become a world economic power with theirs.  It's almost scary to think what Microsoft will be able to do with theirs.  Sounds like opportunity knocking for Windows developers.
The Windows 8 Metro Start screen, complete with its flat, styleless tiles, has replaced the Start Menu in Windows 8, and there's no Start button at all.  I give it a month at most before someone like Ivo Beltchev, who created the Windows 7 add-on "ClassicShell" package, creates software to restore a workalike to the Windows 7 menu.  I've tried the current version of ClassicShell already with the Windows 8 developer preview and it doesn't seem to run, though I haven't gone to the ClassicShell forums to see whether there's a workaround.
But using the Win key to pop over to the Metro Start screen, which is the start menu replacement, all the functionality is still there, and there are some advantages.  For example, a number of known bugs in Windows Explorer have been fixed, and they've integrated ribbons into Explorer in a way that actually makes some sense.  So far everything I've tried to run has worked - I get the impression either compatibility was very high on their list, or they haven't done much to the "traditional" APIs.
Oh, and they've integrated their own anti-malware solution, so there will be no more need for 3rd party packages.
Interestingly to me, after half a day of testing and getting used to it (and having run the Windows 8 Developer Preview before that for months), the whole Windows 8 system so far feels lighter and more efficient that Windows 7.  There are fewer processes running, they seem to take up less memory, and just a lot of things seem more polished.
I'm guessing there's just enough "gee whiz" here to make even people who are relatively happy with Windows 7 want to upgrade.

  • Gradual decrease in performance in allareas

Hi, I am running PS CS6 x64.  PC details are
    Windows 8 professional 64bit
    LGA2011 i7 3820
    32GB RAM Quad Channel
    NVidia GTX560TI
Several HDD's, scratch disk is a 2 disk stripe set
Master Suite CS6 and LR 4.3
All Adobe software is up to date
    Running latest NVidia drivers
Up until recently Photoshop has been running OK.  Over the past week or so, when I have a file open, size and number of layers don't seem to make a difference, the performance gradually decreases to the point where using the pen tool to create 2 anchor point can take anywhere up to 20 seconds; this is just an example, this kind of slow down or lag happens with all tools. Shutting down Photoshop and restarting works, but after a few minutes it starts to slow down again.  Time taken to save files also increases once the slowdown starts
    Actions taken so far...
I have reset all tool pre-sets
    Deleted all Photoshop settings files
    Purged history etc.
Confirmed all drivers and software up to date
Replicated the problem on small and large files with from 2 - 30 layers
Replicated the problem on existing PSD and PSB files as well as with new raw files.
Tried loading images from Lightroom and from directly within Photoshop
Changed performance settings (history & cache, gpu, memory etc.) and tried multiple configurations including enabling/disabling "Use Graphics Processor"
I can't think of anything else to try.  As mentioned, this is a fairly new problem that started about a week and half ago and is gradually getting worse.  I'm at the point now where I have to shut down Photoshop and restart it every 5 minutes.  I am a photographer, and when you have to do this for dozens of images, it becomes an untenable process.
Can anyone suggest some new tests or remedies?

I don't think you can get there from here (logging a ticket), unless one of the Adobe folks kindly goes out of their way to do so.  Generally speaking I think you'd need to call support.
This is the first I think I've heard of your specific issue here on the forum.  There have been occasional threads about sluggishness in general - just not progressively worse sluggishness.  What does Task Manager say?  Do you see the Photoshop.exe process chewing up CPU time?  What does Resource Monitor say?  Do you see a lot of (or progressively more) disk activity when Photoshop gets sluggish?
Regarding Norton, I'm not sure just disabling it is sufficient to test whether it's causing the problem.  You would have to remove it entirely (or refresh Windows).  I've not heard anything good about Norton software in a long time, and don't forget that Windows 8 comes with an anti-malware solution right out of the box.  That said, personally I use Avast! on all my systems.

  • How effective is System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection for Windows?

    Hi,
Is there any thing out there that compares how effective System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection is compared to other AV / Malware solutions?    I have read where MS Security Essentials comes up short of the level of protection compared to
    other solutions.
    Thanks Lance

Didn't mean to propose that MS love (yes we all know that you love MS Jason) post as an answer to your question.
Truth is SCEP may be good at how it works, it doesn't whine to users and it integrates to ConfigMgr. That's where it's good at.  And I get Jason's point there, I'd just like to know what are those "other products" that haven't found the malware
when SCEP did? MS may gather telemetry, but so do all the other players.
There are several companies that do ONLY and ONLY AV products so they put their 100% effort in them, I don't think that AV is the business priority number 1 for MS.
    Check this:
    http://lifehacker.com/microsoft-admits-that-third-party-antivirus-is-more-eff-1441135677
And for your info Security Essentials uses the same AV engine that SCEP does.
If you want REAL protection, tested in the REAL world, I suggest you read some reviews of the products.
    http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/corporate-user/windows-8/janfeb-2013/
    http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php
--- ADVERT (I don't think it's illegal here, eh Jason?)
I'd go with F-Secure, it's not that expensive and you get some neat features like USB (or any other device for that matter) blocker. And yes, it can be configured to use individual USB sticks and so on..

The issue I am having is upon playing world of tanks anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours I will get a black screen and the sound will loop. The monitor will says it is going to sleep. The only fix is a power off/on. This sometimes gets courpt files then have to run chdsk. So it does have most recent drivers and I have tried so old ones with the same effect. Today daughter was playing an online(facebook) game and same thing happen. So I put back in my first video card hd 4550 that used to not have this issue. Then started playing WOT and again got black screen and sound loop. So I am not thinking it is an video card issue since it happens with both video cards. Power supply voltage checked out okay by meter. So not sure where to go with this issue.
Only thing I am think is the ps is over power the video card through the old motherboard????
    Any other ideas

That is not very likely. The power to the video card is regulated by power circuits on the motherboard.

Which OS is installed and which type is it?
When was the last time you went to the command line and used the system file checker? sfc /scannow
Have you refreshed the swap file recently?
    How about your temp\tmp folder?
What are you using for an active antivirus\malware solution?
Which JRE are you using? Are you sure it is the most stable version?
Are you certain this is not a temperature related issue?
    Best regards,

  • Which Business Security Solution is common seen / used in your country? [malware event]

    Hi all
I believe some of the technical people would be curious and try to find out what security solutions is used for government, education, place of interest or organizations. I am one of it.  * I did not use any of their machines, I saw it through Taskbar.
I am not biased for any security products, this is based on what I seen outside.  Commonly either Symantec or McAfee in Singapore for business security.
Government managed hospital -  Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
IBM Singapore - Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
Institute of Technical Education Singapore - Symantec Endpoint Protection
Singapore Polytechnics (including Student's Personal Laptop if direct purchase) - Symantec Endpoint Protection
Primary and Secondary Schools (under Ministry of Education) - McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
    SCDF - McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
I also seen some Microsoft and ESET security products running around SMB when I was asked to go to client sites to assist setup for presentation. So far, I have not seen any other products from other security vendors.
It would be great if you can share your findings, so all of us would know which security vendors is more popular for different areas, etc.
    Cheers

  • Arc Solutions Forum redirecting to malware site

    Hi,
Does anyone use the Arc Solutions forum for support on Cisco's CUxAC products?
    http://forum.arcsolutions.com/
When I access it it redirects me to filestore72.info which is a dodgy malware site masquerading as a file sharing site. If I go back in the browser then click the link again it loads the forum page.
I originally thought it was something dodgy on my PC but it happens on other PC's belonging to other companies that I use for work purposes and seems to happen across all browsers.
    Is anyone else seeing this?

I have just logged into my account on the Arc forum and I have 4 private messages all of which are dodgy spam (we have detected your computer is infected, use this web proxy etc.)
They seriously need to get their act together

  • What do you think about running 2 security solutions at the same time? [malware event]

    Hi all
Is there anyone here running 2 Security Solutions at the same time?
From what I know, few of my lecturers are running AVG and Avira, or Avira and MSE. (All free)
According to their theory, school-licensed Symantec Endpoint Protection slows down the system too much till a point that it is slow or unable to detect the threats. 1 antivirus is not good enough, 2 antivirus would be able to detect 100% of malware.
For my school labs computer, they are running both Symantec Endpoint Protection and Microsoft Security Essential at the same time.
Does 2 security solutions or more helps your computer to be risk-free?
    Cheers

    Solved!

    Hello,
Generally speaking, you should not run two security programs together at the same time which run in "real-time," e.g., they are actively monitoring the system.  The reason for this is that the various real-time components (on-access file system scanner, network traffic filter, and so forth) may interfere with each others operations as they both attempt to access the same bits at the same time.  This can lead to all sorts of strange system behavior, such as slowdowns, program crashes, failed downloads and lock-ups.
If you are going to do this, make sure you disable the realtime scanning components of one program, or use one program to actively monitor the system and the other to periodically perform an scheduled or manual scans on demand.
