Installning Ubuntu 14.04 on Proliant Microserver Gen8 G1610T

I recently bought a HP Proliant Microserver Gen8 G1610T.  I have outfitted it with one 500GB WD Black drive (slot 1) and one 6TB WD Red drive (slot 2) along with an extra 4 GB Kingston 1600 memory. Now I am trying to install Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS without much success. I am new to both servers and Ubuntu.
I am installing Ubuntu through a USB since the server lacks a optical drive. I have made a USB installation stick through pendrive. I intend to install Ubuntu on my 500GB disk and use the 6TB disk as storage. In the future I will add additional 6TB disks as need arises.
Since I am new to both servers and Ubuntu, I would appreciate if someone could give me a detailed installation guide on a newbielevel on how to install and configurate Ubuntu. Once the operating system is installed, configurated and updated and all necessary HP drivers installed and updated, I intend to install Samba and Plex Media Server along with some program to facilitate remote administration from my windows 7 notebook.
I have tried installing Ubuntu on my own to the best of my ability and through googling but ran into trouble almost directly. I have not changed or fiddled with any of the BIOS-settings or other settings when trying to install. The installation attempts were made on "out-of-box"-settings. First I inserted the USB, then started the server. After booting (F11) to USB, I get the main installation screen, where I choose Install Ubuntu. As soon as I get to the automatic network configuration I run in to trouble. The installation fails to automatically configurate DHCP, no matter which Broadcom option (em1 or em2) I choose. At this point, I have aborted the installation. I have not managed to solve this issue. The installation attempt was done both with the network cable not attached and attached.
Also, during my googling, I have read that this particular server does not support Ubuntu 14.04 and that the B120i needs updating with special drivers in order to work and to reduce fan noise. I would like to know how to do this, preferably in an easy step-by-step solution.  I have downloaded the hpvsa (trusty version) and tried to make a driver injector usb through Windows 7 and the diskpart program without success. Don't know how if the USB injector turned out OK and how, and in what order, to use it to update the drivers.
Phew. Lots to do and lacking in knowledge to do so I would appreciate all the help I can get! Thanks

  • ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 + 32GB RAM Bios Fix

Hi all. I have bought a ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 and wondering why the spec the ram is limited to 16GB RAM.
The chipset and CPU support up to 32GB  RAM. The MicroServer has 2 DIMM Slots and 16GB RAM modul exsist.
I asked the memory company Intelligent Memory  and asked if 32GB udimm will supported.
The Support answered me that the 16GB Ram limit is a restriction set by HP in the Bios.
Could you please remove this limitation / restriction from BIOS?
Lot of Customers have this wish because they use for Homelab for Study (Exchange, Sharepoint etc) Only Exchange already consume 8GB Ram and Sharepoint is recomend 12 GB)

  • Turn off sleep Proliant Microserver g7 n54l

    Hi
I hope this post is in the correct section - closest I could find.
I recently purchased a Proliant Microserver g7 n54l and installed a RS232 card and Windows 7 Professional. System works well for the Access Control software I installed on it.
My problem: the microserver goes into standby mode after a few hours and has to be brought back by physically pressing the power button. I turned off sleep, hibernate and standby in Windows 7 but this doe not help.
    Please help?
    - is there a setting in the BIOS?
    - is there some software ti install

    Hi ZainHoosen,
I'm wondering if it's related to using Windows 7 Pro on a server rather than an OS designed for a server (such as MS Server 2012), but I don't know enough about this product to say for sure.

  • HP ProLiant Microserver Gen8 RAID 1 configuration

Hi all, I'm not sure If I post this message in correct topic of this forum, if not, I'm sorry. I've an HP MicroServer Gen8 and I'm very happy with. But for security reasons I want to mirrored the two drives to RAID1.It's for me along time ago to configuring RAID and I forget things quickly. I use this server for private and office use. I have two hard drive froms 500GB (I bought a new second disk). I saw that the HP Dynamic Smart Array was not enabled in the first boot sequence when I start the server. So I go to BIOS for setup. I followed this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSQWJCbvpAA (from HP, the uploader is someone else btw) When I was in the BIOS I go to:1 System options2 SATA Controller Options3 And then Embbed SATA configution4 I get an warning message pop-up, when I want to enable and I press on enter (I followed exactly the tutorial on youtube)5 Enable Dynamic HP Smart Array B120i RAID Support -> I press on enter6 Then I go to Advanced Options and press on Advanced System ROM Options and I enable the Virtual Install Disk7 I go look back on System Options if I see now that the Dynamic HP Smart Array B120i RAID Support is enabled, but I didn't see it. Small info: I see under PCI Device enable/disable that the Dynamic HP Smart Array is enabled. But Why I cant see it under System Options? In the video is ROM - BASED Setup utility, Version 3.00Copyright 1982, 2012 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.And in this server is :ROM - BASED Setup utility, Version 3.00Copyright 1982, 2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. Maybe it's changed. I don't know. I'm stuck. Missed I an feature that I need to enable in the Bios setting? I'm known well in BIOS. But the RAID configuration is a bit drained away...Can anyone help me further? Thanks in advance! Sincerly,Blusion.

  • How to install windows server 2008r2 on proliant microserver with 8gb storage?

I've just purchased two HP Proliant N40 Microservers and am trying to install Windows 2008 Server R2 on them.  They come with a single hard drive of just 250GB capacity so on one server I have used the two supplied drives to create a RAID1 array of 250GB and Windows installed fine.
On the second I have installed four WB Green 2TB drives and have configured them as RAID10 for the best performance and resilience. So I have a single disk showing to Windows of 4GB after the RAID array is built.
But Windows gets so far before failing saying it can't proceed (and giving no clue as to why). Googling the issue it seems that there is an issue with installing Windows on a drive with > 2TB.  HP themselves talk about the use of RAID drivers for Windows here: http://h20584.www2.hp.com/hpgt/guides/select?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=4248009&lan... but the link is useless because the link it gives for downloading the driveres just displays a "Not authorised" screen.
I just want a simple way to install Windows 2008 using a secure, performant reliable set of discs.  RAID10 gives me that but Windows won't install.  It seems my only option is to format two RAID1 arrays to overcome this silly limitation.
Am I right?  Or is there a way to configure the four disks as a RAID10 array that Windows can be installed on?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Ian

Update, install continues when drives are set to IDE...so it fails using RAID (1 or 10).

  • Windows 2008 R2 install fails on ProLiant MicroServer G7 N40L

The system has 4 x 2.5SATA drives. I have tried RAID10 and RAID1. Used a 500GB partition for the Windows install. Every time the install gets all the way to the end of the initial install after it completes copying the Windows files and it about to reboot when I get:
Windows could not prepare the computer to boot in the next phase of the installation. To install Windows, restart the installation.
This has happened 3 separate times all at the same place. What am I missing here? Is there some incompatability issue with Windows 2008 R2? The system has 2GB of RAM. I can't tell what kind of memory it is (ECC, non-ECC, etc.)
    Thanks, Michael

  • Can't get wake on lan to work on Hp n40l microserver

    Hello
I installed arch on my HP proliant microserver and I can not get Wake on lan to work. I tested my device with ethtool and it supports and is enabled for WOL with g value set for both.
But whenever I power it off by systemctl poweroff I can no longer see it as a connected device to my router
Before installing arch I tried ubuntu for testing the hardware quickly and I got wake on lan working there. I can not figure out what might be the issue here. Wake on lan is enabled in the BIOS.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers

As I see in the Archwiki , the wol package would also need the IP address ( though not necessary ) along with the mac address of the server.
I fear that the nic on the server does not obtain an ip in shutdown state, since I can't see it in my attached devices in the router settings( I could be very wrong ! )
Tried using wol on a laptop running arch, but with no luck.
I have seen this workaround in several places
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/981461
I even tried creating a similar script which would first do
ip link set dev enp2s0 down
    systemctl poweroff
but that did not work either.
    Cheers

  • Setting up Windows Home server 2011 on Microserver

This is the first time I have played with a server although lots of experience of setting up desktops.  I have a HP proliant microserver and have added a couple of extra 500gb drives.  I have just installed Windows Home Server 2011 and can't see the extra drives in windows explorer.    I assume that I need to change something in the BIOS or am I missing something?  My aim is to set the extra drives up as some form of RAID or mirroring.  Any help welcome.
    Thanks

You should use HP smart start DVD to install the Windows Home Server. If you are booting directly from the Windows DVD it would some times not detect the drivers because of the hardware compatibility issue. You should contact the the vendor and seek help
    from him.

  • HP MediaSmart error after upgrading to Windows 7

I recently upgraded my HP IQ816 from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed all Windows 7 software updates from HP's website. Everything works great except the HP MediaSmart application. HP Update repeatedly notifies me that an "HP MediaSmart DVD Application Update" for Windows 7 is required. When I attempt to install the update, I receive the following error message: "Error!! The product defination file lost." Attempts to update this software from directly within the MediaSmart application results in the same error. I've tried uninstalling MediaSmart altogether. The same error appears and the product will not uninstall. Downloading and installing the update directly from Cyberlink returns the same error. HP refuses to help since I changed the OS that shipped with their machine and I've been unable to find a solution anywhere else on the internet. Many thanks in advance for the suggestions and help!
    Model #: IQ816
    Product #: FK783AA-ABA

    Ok try this,...
    1. Download and SAVE this update to your computer
    HP MediaSmart DVD Application Update
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL31151/pv-77263-1/sp44452.exe
This is the HP Vista x64 driver (I know its windows 7 your on, Vista drivers are compatible)
    2. Install winrar on your PC, please use google to find free download of winrar
    3. Extract the sp44452.exe file contents using file explorer, do this by right click on the file you downloaded to your local hard drive and select "Extract to sp44452\..."
    4. then move into the sp44452\src directory, you'll see file named HPMediaSmartDVD.exe, do the same, extract the contents of this file using file explorer and "Extract to HPMediaSmartDVD\..."
    5. Ok now, you move to sp44452\Source\HPMediaSmartDVD\hp\tmp\src directory and run setup.exe from there
    6. You should be right as rain now... Enjoy, if it works I expect kudos since HP Support haven't been able to help...

  • I'd like to see next generation of Touchsmart PC with Touchsmart keyboard and dual screen

Where you have a monitor as the display and a seperate keyboard, but the keyboard is another monitor which operates as a keyboard, for example something like this...
This ultimately would mean that the keyboard could be application driven, that is it could be specifically configured anyway that the application requires it.  I'd also like to see a dual screen option for touchsmart PC - a screen that is built in and can be slid out from the rear of the monitor to act as dual screen, extended screen...

  • Screensaver ignores settings in Windows Media Player when watching a movie...

    Hello,
Does anyone know how to resolve the problem with screensaver kicking in while watching a movie using Windows Media Player (WMP) even though I have unchecked  the option to "Allow screen saver during playback" option in WMP?
I have found that if I start Windows Media Center (WMC) first and watch TV for example or even listen to Music in WMC  and then later quit out and then load WMP to watch an avi file, after the specified time the screen saver starts up and the movie is no longer visible until i move the mouse to stop the screensaver.  I know if I reboot WMP will work fine and no Screen saver will startup, that is not until i start WMC again and then go back into WMP...
