Instant Alpha is so bad!

In the last version, Instant Alpha helped me crop pictures and produced very smooth, nice-looking icons. In the new Keynote, it doesn't look smooth at all, even though I tried with a round, blue-colored logo with a white background, when I apply Instant Alpha, an ugly white line (or pieces of it) stay around. Presentations on Keynote used to look so nice, any fix for this? Any help will be well apretiated.

I completely agree! I was trying to demo this to a customer the other day (I work for Best Buy) and the feature has been butchered to the point it is almost unsuable.

Is there a way to Instant Alpha Smart Build photos?

In Steve Jobs' iPhone Keynote '07, he introduces the iPhone as three separate devices: an iPod, Phone, and Internet Communicator. He has an icon for each, and uses the Cube Smart Build effect. I tried doing the same but the white border remains around the pictures I dragged into Keynote. I tried to eliminate them by using Instant Alpha, but it won't let you use it to photos in Smart Build. Does anyone know how to get the border off? I want my Keynote to look as professional as Steve's and I don't want this slide to bring it down, any help is greatly appreciated!

For some reason, although the Smart Builds do not let you use an Instant Alpha-ed image alone, if you group it with another object, or even just copy it with another object, the transparency is preserved. The workaround is therefore to create a transparent object by removing its fill, putting this over (or under) your Instant Alpha-ed image, and copying the two of them together. Then select the image well in the Smart Build and paste in the two images. Your photo should have its transparency preserved.
Presumably this is just a bug that will be fixed in future versions.

Instant Alpha

I'm trying to make the background of an image go away so that I just have the object in the image and the background transparent. Now, I tried in instant alpha in preview and this is what happens:
I get these dotted lines around the giraffe. I then press enter and instead of showing me the giraffe with a transparent background, I see this:
I don't know what to do with this. Is this my transparent image? I know how to do Instant Alpha in Pages, but I do not know how to get the transparent image from the pages document to my desktop. I would also really like to know how to do Instant Alpha in Preview. Does anyone know what I should do after this to retreive my new transparent backround image?

Hit Delete once the area to be transparent is selected - i know it used to be 'enter/return' to activate this but at some point was changed to 'delete'. i hope that helps.

"Instant Alpha" on a PDF Istockimage

I want to outline an imported image from istockphoto.com, but I don't know the name of what I am trying to do. I am thinking I need to create a path. The reason I called it instant alpha is b/c in Pages I can take the back image away and keep the front image without keeping the whole image together. How can I do this in Illustrator?

What you're looking for is a Clipping Mask. You could also use an Opacity Mask. However, you're probably going to be better off removing or masking the background in Photoshop and then placing the PSD into Illustrator.

Use images with instant alpha in smart build?

I have a few logos with solid backgrounds that I would like to use in a smart build with the backgrounds removed. I can put the logos in the smart build with and I can also remove the backgrounds using instant alpha. I cannot figure out how to put the logos with the background removed into the smart build. Perhaps this is not possible since the instant alpha effect is non-destructive and doesn't truly change the image file? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

What you have to do it "set" the image WITH the Instant Alpha before using it in a Smart Build.

Alpha Channel in Photoshop for iWeb instant Alpha?

Recently i wish to Make a Picture's Background to transperence.
I try to use a ODD color (green screen's GREEN) as background color so that it'll be easy to delete the background when apply the instant alpha function...but i relize that it doesn't really make sense at all...Most of the parts doesn't process well...
Question:~
+ What s'ld i do in Photoshop before i bring the picture file into iWeb for instant alpha?Alpha Channel and save as .psd?
+ Do any other useful way to solve the issue above?

Here's what I do:
1 - open the file, double click on the background layer in the Layer pane to unlock it and add a second layer below the original layer.
2 - using your tool of choice delete the background you want removed. If the background is a single color I use the Magic Wand tool. You may have to work with the Tolerence number if there's any gradiants. Other wise I use the Quick Selection tool (again you may have to set the Tolerence level)
3 - When he background is removed you then use the File->Save for Web and Devices option.
4 - in the next window select PNG8 under Preset and check the Transparency box. Colors is set to 256, Dither at 200% and Web Snap 0% (these are all the defaults the first time I used it).
5 - The background should show transparent. It it doesn't click on the color that you want transparent in the Color Table and then click on the far left box in the toolbar directly below the color chart. You can add additional colors if desired.
6 - Save and you're done.

Instant alpha feature not available with Photos (want to remove background)

Hello,
I have to make some pictures better and for that remove background that is roughly uniform. For that i'm used to use "instant alpha" feature, but it appears to be no more available neither in Photos and Preview. Funny thing is instant alpha remains available with Pages.
Do i miss something with Photos, or is it a better way to remove background with OS X Yosemite?

Copy and paste images altered using Instant Alpha

I have put many hours cropping and altering images with Instant Aplha. I want to save these images so I can use them in other files.
I have tried to copy and paste but i get nothing. I have trying dragging them but that does't work either.
What am I missing??

As long as you remain in Keynote Instant Alpha remains whether dragging slides or images. If you want to use the changed images in other applications I doubt that it will remain because you are not altering the original image. For a 'permanent' solution you need to use Photoshop or similar.

Pages Software keeps crashing while using the Instant Alpha tool???

While working in Pages that came preloaded on my new iMac-it keeps crashing while using the Instant Alpha Tool??? Any help on what to do for this????

I wonder what type of graphic you are working on. Instant Alpha doesn't work directly on an iWork Shape or other construction that originates from an iWork app. You can export an iWork construction and bring it back as a normal graphic and use Instant Alpha on it if that is your objective.

"Preview" Instant Alpha with transparent back round?

I am using the "Instant Alpha" feature in preview to mask out selections and paste them into other applications. When I paste a Alpha mask into say, PS CS5 it comes in with a white back round. Is there a way to have the mask come in with a transparent back round? I find using the previews instant alpha feature far superior to using the masking tools in PS CS 3-5. Previews "Instant Alpha" is Much more accurate and requires less steps needed to get a superior key.

Actually I found it, you save as a PNG and check Alpha, then it will import into PS as transparent but thanks for the quick reply! I also tried to cut n paste with the PS feature set as transparent back round on new document and it still came in with a white back round FYI.

Instant Alpha and Masking

I recently tried to edit some photos using the Masking and Instant Alpha. When I tried using these features Pages froze almost immediately. It just kept "thinking" with the rainbow dial and I had to Force Quit. I have tried SEVERAL times. I even went to the Apple store and worked on a display model and the same thing happens.
Is anyone else having this issue? I feel like it must be a bug. Please update software and repair this. Or tell me what I am doing wrong. I dont know what other software to use.

Preview - multi select with instant alpha? Possible

I have an image that is non-contiguous. I want to crop it out of its white background. I used instant alpha to select the solid black image. But there are two of them and I want them both to stay apart of one another. I tried "command" selecting the second one, but it seems to be an either/or situation. How do I get both solid black images at the same time. How would I get 3 or 4 or 5? Like if I wanted to take off big block text from a white background. I tried selecting the white background, but then the islands of white inside of D and P and B etc don't get selected. I know there's a way to do this, isn't there?

I guess the point was that Preview used to do it (at least in Leopard, I skipped Snow and am new to Lion) and I was wondering if they had just hidden the feature under new key combinations or some checkbox I needed to tick, but I couldn't find anything (or rather, Google couldn't find anything).
It was nice to be able to open a PNG and quickly make it transparent without waiting for Photoshop to load, although now that my MacBook has a SSD that point is pretty moot.

Instant Alpha is working but won't save

Instant alpha appears to work but then when I save (as a PNG) it comes up as black background and transparency is gone (checked multiple times & uploaded to multiple places). What am I doing wrong here? It has worked in the past for me.

I would try switching your Payment Method to "none" and then signing out of your account completely (Store menu > Sign Out). Then, sign back in and go to enter your CC info again. You might want to contact your financial institution to see if they've switched your billing address over in their systems yet. If they goofed something, it might explain why iTunes is rejecting your info.
