Instant Client Basic Lite 10.2.0.1 & VS2005

Here is the scenario...built a VB2005 thin client app/10g backend with 9i client installed on local machine....works great. Tried app on another machine and app failed due to the app requiring OC 8.1.7 or greater (this machine had OC 8.0.6.2c). Built an MSI installer to install Instant Client Basic Lite 10.2 files and update path and installed on this machine. Problem fixed so I thought. Works great on machine which previously had OC 8.06.2c, however when installing the app and Instant client on a machine which never had an Oracle client, the app fails stating Oracle Client 8.1.7 or greater must be installed.
What am I missing?
Paul

Thanks for the quick reply.
It is a .NET app which uses the OracleClientAdapter packaged with VS2005. I find it interesting that installing the instant client in combination with OC 8.0.6.2c results in a working App considering 1) The App requires 8.1.7 or above and 2) the info you just provided that it does not yet support .NET.
To answer your question - on the non-working App on the XP machine that has just the PATH set to Instant Client, ORACLE_HOME is not specified. It's is an end users machine, where it was the first time testing the prototype App.
Do you think setting ORACLE_HOME=x:\instantclient has a chance of making the instant client work on this machine? I will try this out tomorrow as the end user is in town and has offered their machine for a couple of hours.
The only significant differences that are obvious to me between my XP machine using instant client successfully and the non- working machine is the following:
Installed on My Machine
===========================
1. OC 8.0.8.2c is previously installed
2. ORACLE_HOME is set
3. TNSNAMES - which doesn't seem to matter - i tested renaming the file to another name and instant client still works
3. Merant Oracle ODBC drivers
Looks like I may be forced to install the full Oracle Client on machines running this App. I'll tryi setting ORACLE_HOME on the non-working machine tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
Thanks,
Paul

  • Instant client basic package usages needed

    Hi,
I have installed oats in my laptop in windows xp operating system which is using the default database 10g express edition that comes along with the installation process of oats.
Now i want to use the 11g database which is in oel5 in my desktop
Both of the system are in a same network
in order to connect, oats and 11g, the instant client basic package is needed and also the odbc supplement and i have downloaded both of the packages and extract them to the same directory in windows xp and the necessory changes have been made in system environment variable also
when performing the system DSN test process it is failed and the error is occured TNS no listener
    help me pls

I recommend that you do not install Instant Client on your laptop at all.
Instead, use the Oracle client that is included in the 10g server.
It is difficult to have more than one Oracle installation on one Windows machine, because Windows is not designed as a multi-user OS.
All you have to do is change the connection string to point to the other database (the documentation of oats, whatever it is, should tell you how).

  • Configuring instant client basic

    Hello everybody,
I just downloaded and extracted instant client basic to my pc and in the installation instructions, it says to "Modify your PATH variable to include the new directory."
How do I do this? Thanks

If this is on Windows then do the following:
    - Right click on "My Computer"
    - Select the "Advanced" Tab
    - At the bottom click on the "Environment Variables" button
    - Add the directory path under "System variables"

  • 11.2.0.3.20 "Basic Lite" Client?

    Cross posting from
Re: No "Lite" version of 11.2.0.3.20 ODAC?
    on orafad's recommendation (thanks!)
Is there a "basic lite" instant client that corresponds to ODAC 11.2.0.3.20?
I'm assuming it's needed because we're building / deploying on .net 4.5 which is only supported in ODAC 11.2.0.3.20?
I'm mainly looking for the oraociicus11.dll that has limited character sets -- which is about 34 MB -- I don't want to have to ship 125+ meg version unless we absolutely need to.
from orafad's response to my questions -- if it helps to translate to oracle speak :) --
The last .20 is a patch version. Which means it may be that Instant Client was not patched, only some other dlls, and therefor 11.2.0.3 is the latest available.
(Note that individual dll versions may differ from patch version.)
The only a few client character sets - version you are looking for is Basic Lite. And yes name of package matters in this case
I assumes you meant: oraociicus11.dll, which is about 34 MB.
Forum dedicated to Instant Client, to which this thread belongs, Instant Client
    Regards, Chad

    Looking at
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/downloads/index-101290.html
I see that "ODAC 11.2 Release 5 (11.2.0.3.20)" includes "Oracle Instant Client 11.2.0.3.0".
11.2.0.3.20 seems to only apply to "Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio".
So unless Oracle is quite sloppy about their version numbers (which they usually are not)
that would be exactly the same version as the download from
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-097480.html
So I would feel safe about removing oraociei11.dll and replacing it with oraociicus11.dl
from Instant Client Basic Lite 10.2.0.3.0.
Also, the Instant Client shared library contains message and time zone files, and the chances
that these change between fixpacks is not so big.
Of course, if you need certainty that this is supported, you'd have to have support and
    open a service request.

  • Windows 7 64 Bit machine with Instant Client and 32Bit application

    Hello everybody,
the last days a tried to get a 32Bit application to run on a Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit machine ... unfortunately with no success. The application runs on XP Pro and Vista Pro 32 Bit machines against a 11g RDBMS for years. As a refenence we use SQLTools from sqltools.net. It has nearly the same behaviour like the application, because it is a 32 bit application too.
First thing was to install a 64 bit environement to verify if the connection is allright.
    - Downloaded instantclient-basic-windows.x64-11.2.0.2.0.zip an instantclient-sqlplus-windows.x64-11.2.0.2.0.zip
    - Unpacked both packages into C:\oracle so that they reside in C:\oracle\instantclient_11_2
    - Made a directory C:\oracle\tnsnames with tnsnames.ora in it, because the app uses it
    - Set the environement variables TNS_ADMIN to point to C:\oracle\tnsnames and added C:\oracle\instantclient_11_2 in front of the path variable
    - Restarted the machine
    - Opened a commnd shell and startet sqlplus user/password@sid
Everything was allright, I was able to connect to the database as expected
Second thing was to start SQLTools, but as I feard it quitted with an error message when trying to access oci.dll of the instant client.
So i decided to switch to a 32 bit environement as a third thing.
    - Downloaded instantclient-basiclite-nt-11.2.0.2.0.zip and instantclient-sqlplus-nt-11.2.0.2.0.zip
    - Deleted the old C:\oracle\instantclient_11_2
    - Unpacked both 32 bit packages into C:\oracle so that they reside in C:\oracle\instantclient_11_2
    - Didn't change anything in the environement, because nothing changed from the view of the system
    - Opened a commnd shell and startet sqlplus user/password@sid
But now I wasn't able to connect and got the following error
ORA-28547: connection to server failed, probable Oracle Net admin error
SQLPlus was able to start now, but when trying to connect to the database I got the same error like when connecting with sqlplus.
Does anybopdy have an idea how to manage to get a 32 bit application to run on a Windows 7 64 Bit machine?
    Thanks in advance
    My packages:
    Windows 7 64 bit SP1
Oracle Instant Client basic lite 11.2.0.2.0
    SQLPlus 1.5 22D

Have you tried WOW64 ? I have not used this emulator for sqlplus but it works for other 32 bit applications.

  • Collision of Instant Client with other Clients (by registry key ORACLE)

    Hello,
i'm trying to use Instant Client Basic Lite and Instant Client sqlplus on my Windows XP to connect to Oracle server.
Client files and sqlplus files are in the same directory. I also have installed client 8, 9i 10g and database xe on my PC.
If I try to start sqlplus I receive following errors:
    c:\a\-e>sqlplus ntpl/[email protected]:1522/xe
SP2-1503: Unable to initialize Oracle call interface
SP2-0152: ORACLE may not be functioning properly
But if I rename regitry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\ORACLE to HKLM\SOFTWARE\-ORACLE
it works fine. It seems there is a collision with registry values.
I have already tried to set:
    set nls_lang=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8
    but it haven't helped.
    Could you help me please?
    Thank you very much
    Viktor

As far as I know, Instant Client does not use the Windows registry at all.
Is there a chance that you accidentally use the other client?
Which access method do you use? sqlplus? Some API? Which API?
Are both clients in your PATH? In which order?
It's really difficult to sort out problems with multiple Oracle clients on
one Windows machine. I had to resort to Process Monitor in one instance
to figure out what was really going on.

  • Oracle instant Client and memory

    Hello everybody,
I have just installed the Oracle Instant Client on my Linux server (Redhat distibution), I recompiled PHP (4.4.2 version) with the oci8 extensions and I reboot Apache (1.3.34 version)...
In short, the installation of OIC goes perfectly (No error messages...), and I can request a remote Oracle server from a PHP file. (All this, for one PHP script that I use only once a day, to load data in a MySQL table).
However, since I installed the OIC, my Apache processes exceeds the 200 MB and my server has a commit memory more than 2GB (sometimes it goes until 5GB).
Is it a problem that can come from the OIC ? Maybe, a parameter could fix that problem ?
    Thx in advance.
    Maat

If you can't upgrade from PHP4, you should upgrade at least the OCI8
extension. All PHP 4 releases have a very, very old version of OCI8.
Steps to upgrade are given in the free Underground PHP and Oracle Manual
The Instant Client Basic package uses a chunk of (shareable) memory
for all its NLS data. The Instant Client Lite package uses a smaller
    footprint.
Make sure you know what you are measuring and whether what you are
seeing actually has an effect on performance.

  • Oraclle 11g instant client x64 doesn't  work in windows 7 x64

First of all I've read the software requirements in the installation guides for 11g instant client x64 and no support for Windows 7 is mentioned.. I'm not sure if this is the case any how here is the details of the problem:
I downloaded instant client (basic) and (sqlplus) and unzipped them on drive E, afterwards I created tnsnames.ora file with the following:
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = IGGY) (PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL)
and saved it in the instant client directory, afterwards I included the instant client directory in the user variable PATH value, and created system variable TNS_ADMIN and added the location of tnsnames.ora in the value.
Now the problem starts when I open MS-DOS and type: sqlplus system @ORCL, It then prompts for the password and when I try to enter anything the cursor doesn't move unless I press enter and the result is that I get the following error:
ORA-12154: TNS: COULD NOT RESOLVE THE CONNECT IDENTIFIER SPECIFIED
Any idea what the reason of this problem is?

    Hello again,
I was able to reproduce ORA-12154 and the error raised beacause my DUMMY-HOST was not reachable. Using the correct hostname/IP address solved the issue. Can you check if you are able to ping and to telnet your hostname (IGGY).

    David

  • The Instant Client SDK on Linux was released today

The 10.1.0.3 Linux Instant Client SDK was posted on OTN today. See
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/instantclient.html
You can now use Instant Client to compile PHP. You need to modify
PHPs configuration scripts first. One suggested change is given in
PHP bug http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=31084 The diff in the bug is a
little awkwardly wrapped. Here it is again for ease of
cutting/pasting. See the bug for the other instructions.

How can i patch the config.m4 file??

  • Database connectivity problem with instant client.

    Guys,
I've installed the Oracle instant client basic and ODBC files in my system.
But when I create a system DSN and test the connectivity my database connectivity,it fails with
    ORA-12637:Packet receive failed error
    My TNSNAMES reads below:
    ONDSP101.DIGITALINDIASW.NET =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = namesrv1.xy.zz.com)(PORT = 1522))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = ONDSP101)
    and my SQLNET as below:
    AUTOMATIC_IPC = OFF
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = ON
    SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT=20
    NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN = na.pg.com
    NAME.DEFAULT_ZONE = na.pg.com
    SQLNET.CRYPTO_SEED = "kdg:9yv2$-plo*u6b2x!"
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH = (ONAMES,TNSNAMES)
    NAMES.PREFERRED_SERVERS =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = TCP.xy.zz.com)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = namesrv1.xy.zz.com)
    (Port = 1522)
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = TCP.xy.zz.com)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = namesrv2.xy.zz.com)
    (Port = 1522)
I've placed my TNSNAMES and SQLNET file in the same folder having the instant client files and I've set my TNSADMIN,LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH environmental variable to the folder location.
Note:I'm able to connect to the database using SQLplus.
    Thanks,
    Bhagat

These days I very seldom use ODBC for Oracle - most recently it was simply to get Enterprise Architect to "talk" to Oracle. I never used it for my client applications (unlike in the fast distant past), so what I know about ODBC is seriously outdated.
Even so, a few comments. :-)
Have you tried creating a user DSN, in case a system DSN somehow works different environment wise?
The above error description sounds like the original TCP connection was successful (i.e. it is not a host unknown or not reachable error). Subsequent packets seem to fails.
To confirm, run the listener on namesrv1.xy.zz.com with logging enabled and have a look at the listener.log - does it show a connection being accepted/handled from your PC when you use the ODBC DSN?
Have you tried the Oracle ODBC drivers? When getting EA connected I had problems (also with Instant Client) and Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle. Downloaded and installed the Oracle ODBC driver and it worked just fine first time around.
PS. You should raise this topic on the Instant Client Forum instead.

  • Instant Client with SQL Server - HELP!!

    G'day all...
My goal is to connect to a server using Oracle Database version 8.1.7.4, from a server which does not have either Oracle Database or the full Oracle Client, preferrably using SQL Server DTS packages.
With that said, I have installed instant client basic and instant client ODBC suppliment on our first development server using the instructions at the following link without any difficulties, although I do admit that I only have a tnsnames.ora file and not a sqlnet.ora file:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/instantclient.html
The trouble is, when I attempt to deploy it on any of our other servers it fails. When I attempt to connect using Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle in a DTS package in SQL Server I get the following error message:
HResult of 0x8004005 (-2147467259) returned Unexpected error occurred. An error result was returned without an error message.
(Note: This is seen on all other servers I've tried this on except for the first one).
I have also tried setting up a System ODBC connection using the Instant Client driver but it returned this error message:
    Unable to connect
    SQLState=S1000
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified
In desperation I have also tried installing the Oracle RDB Driver and the Oracle 8.1.7.8.1.0 ODBC driver. Both appear to install successfully yet nothing seems to work.
As far as I can tell,l these are the differences between the first server and the other servers:
    - First server is MS SQL Server 2000 version: 8.00.760, rest are 8.00.818
    - First server is running MS SQL Server Analysis services, rest are not
    - First server is MS Windows 2000 Advanced Server, rest are MS Windows 2000 Server
So my first question: Does anyone know if the Instant Client tool works with SQL Server version: 8.00.818?
My second question: Can anyone else suggest something that I haven't tried yet, short of installing the Full Oracle Client on this server? Not that I'm opposed to doing that, it's just that it's a last resort idea as of now...
Please help - need to roll this into production soon...

Kent, I see that many others have reported that error (doing
a google search), but I see no ready answers. I saw something that
reminded me of a connection string value that I've seen answer some
problems. May be worth a shot for you: try adding this string to
the connection string (in "advanced options") for your datasource:
    AuthenticationMethod=Type2
If it doesn't solve it, remove it. But keep it handy in case
it ever may help with some other problem.
Here's one other possible answer for you:
    http://www.webmasterkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/coldfusion-server/3206/SQL-Server-2000-Windows-A uth
Sorry I can't be more clear for you.

  • How to access .dmp data with the Instant Client?

I'm a total beginner, and am trying to access a .Dmp database. I have installed (on Linux i386):
Instant Client Basic 11.2 + SDK + SQLPlus
I'm aware that I have to further set the environment variables ORACLE_HOME and LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and think I know how it should be done.
The files installed in the oracle directory are as follows:
    $ ls /usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client/lib
    glogin.sql libocci.so libsqlplusic.so ottclasses.zip
    libclntsh.so libocci.so.11.1 libsqlplus.so xstreams.jar
    libclntsh.so.11.1 libociei.so ojdbc5.jar
    libnnz11.so libocijdbc11.so ojdbc6.jar
    $ ls /usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client/bin
    adrci genezi sqlplus
But this is where I hit the wall. Just a couple of questions:
How do I make the Client to access the data? I've read a bit about name resolution such as tnsnames.ora and EZConnect, but have no idea what these are, even conceptually.
How do I actually start/configure the Oracle client? Is there an executable somewhere?
Can the .dmp file be even read by the client or do I have to use the SQLPlus to make queries (as I've read somewhere)?
As you see I'm clueless. What are the next steps, or could you point me to a practical tutorial that would show what I need to do.
Thanks a lot for any help..

    user9020180 wrote:
    Right,
I browsed the manual, but I didn't understand whether the import utility part of the oracle database software?
Are there any freely downloadable tools by which I can import the data (and then read with a client?).Everything in the Utilities manual is part of the database software set. If you have a database, you have all of those utilities. If you don't have a database, no third party equivalent to those utilities (if such existed) would be of any value.
Depending on your database version, the .dmp file could have been created with either 'exp' (export) or 'expdp' (datapump). Unfortunately, by default both utilities produce a file with the .dmp extension, but they are different formats and not interchangeable. You will need to find out exactly how the .dmp file was created. Actually, you need to find out the entire command used to create it, not just which utility, because the options used at export time will affect what options are available and desirable at import time.

  • Sqlplus error - instant client 10.1.0.2 with 8.1.7.4

    Hi,
I've installed the instant client basic & sql plus from rpm on a debian system. When I try to connect with sqlplus I get
    SP2-0642: SQL*Plus internal error state 2165, context 4294967295:0:0
The sqlplus cmd line I use should have everything it needs cause I don't have a tnsnames.ora. Here's the cmd line with user & password as xxx
    sqlplus xxx/xxx@"(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=172.25.178.191)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=PWDEV03)))"
Can someone please give me an idea how to figure this out?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Did you read the Release Notes? It often includes some basic setup instructions.
If you also have DB 8.1.7 installed, which includes Client and RSFs, the problem could be with env setup. Be sure paths (eg. PATH) do not include any reference to 8.1.7 files. (so you're not running a mix-up of different installations)
It is usually a good idea to use an env script for each "oracle home", if you want to run two or more installations (from same user).

  • Win7 x64 - how to configure 32-bit Instant Client

I am having difficulty getting Instant Client to establish an ODBC link to Excel 2007, a 32-bit app.  My OS is Windows 7 Professional x64 on a Windows 2008 domain.
I installed Oracle 11g Client 64-bit (11.2.0.3.0), Instant Client Basic 64bit, and Instant Client ODBC 64bit.  Path and TNSNAMES parameters were set correctly, and I was able to use Windows Admin Tools to successfully establish a connection to PowerSchool's Oracle database.  So far, so good.
When I tried to use this connection in Excel 2007, I got an error message stating that "the specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application."  More research led me to conclude that I need to install 32-bit Instant Client Basic and ODBC.
So I downloaded the appropriate versions of both of these, installed it into c:\ora\<username>\product\11.2.0\client32 (a sibling to the 64-bit client_2 folder), and now I'm stumped.  Running windows\sysWOW64\odbcad2.exe, I see what I think is the 64-bit client, which gives an error message about incompatible architecture (again, 64 vs 32 bit).
What parameters need to be set with odbcad2.exe, and how?  Do I need to run the odbcconf.exe program in sysWOW64?  I tried adding the ...\client32 folder to PATH; no effect.  Is this described in excruciating detail anywhere?

    Ferdimar,
This problem sounds like the server is incorrectly configured. You can try verifying that it is setup correctly for the TNS listener.
