Instant Ken Burns For YOU! ..... Or The Idle Thoughts Of An Idle Editor.

Let's not beat around the bush ....... I am lazy!
I have always admired the way, with a few simple clicks, you can transform a selection of your slides in iPhoto, into quite an impressive instant slideshow.
One big advantage is the auto-Ken Burns effect, though on occasions it can pan something important out of the frame!
Now for lazy people like me, there is the FCE equivalent ........ in the form of Piero's Ken Burns Filter which is called the "Auto Pan Zoom".
It can be used in auto-default mode if you are like me, but can also be customised to give the exact effect you want.
I have just done one of my infamous "One minute tests" and was quite impressed.
I imported a random selection of photos and dragged them into the timeline along with the transition.
I then selected them all and dropped the KB Filter onto them.
Finally I de-interlaced them and added a bit of music.
The whole experiment took less than 5 minutes.
I don't claim it to be a prize-winning film but I think it shows how well Piero's filter can work for a slothful person like me!

Very nice...
The little jump you may have noticed during the fade-out during the end was recently fixed in Piero's newer version (I believe this to be the case).
This is a life-saver for people like me who frequently make trip videos with hundreds of photos and don't want to spend the time keyframing every single one of them. Before I got FCE this year, I had been using iMovie HD ('06) to do the "Ken Burns" effect very nicely. However, this often took months to complete a project. I really want to use FCE for my next trip photo show, but am aware that individually keyframing each photo would probably take even more time than I could do it in iMovie.
I realize this was not the purpose of this thread, but here is a question about importing photos into FCE. In iMovie, I experienced pretty decent quality just directly importing the pictures from iPhoto. However, reading through recent threads has given me the impression that importing stills into FCE is considerably more work.
If I simply imported my stills from a folder on my desktop, would I experience similar quality to using them in iMovie HD? Or does the way FCE works make me have to go through more steps?
And finally (as if I already haven't asked enough questions), how did you import your photos Ian? The quality in your creation is good enough for my purposes, and I am hoping that there is an easy and quick way to do what I want.

  • Trying to add a pause after Ken Burns effect to hold the photo

I am trying to set a pause to my still photos after using the Ken Burns effect.  So it starts zoomed in on an area of the photo and pulls out and then I want it to hold for a few seconds so you can see the full photo.   Any suggestions?  I can't find anything anywhere???

    1) copy the photo with the Ken Burns effect
    2) place the copy after the original photo
    3) edit the copy, reverse the order of the Ken Burns effect using the arrows next to the word "Start" so the end point is now the start point, change "Ken Burns" effect to "Crop", and change the duration of the copy
If you want the pause at the beginning
    - place the copy before the original photo
    - edit the copy by just changing the "Ken Burns" effect to a "Crop"  (i.e., crop using the start point),and change the duration of the copy
If you have a "pause, ken burns effect, pause" don't use a transition after the 1st pause and before the 2nd pause.
With a group picture, you can simulate a real Ken Burns effect with
transition, pause, zoom in, pause, [pan, pause] ... [pan, pause,] zoom out, pause, transition

  • Ken Burns in iMovie on the iPhone

    Good day everyone,
Would anyone know if when iMovie on the iPhone if you can disable the Ken Burns effect? I would like my pics not to move but stay exactly where the previous one was.
    Thanks for your help!!!

You can't disable it, however if the start and end positions are the same, then effectively no Ken Burns is applied. Hope that makes sense!

  • 10.1 - transform or ken burns don't work the same

What happened here? I've done this hundreds of times. I import a still image from photoshop. I drag it to the timeline, and hit the crop button, then ken burns, and immediately the start and end green/red boxes, adjust, hit done, and that's it.
Now, when I drag the clip to the timeline, and hit, say Transform, nothing happens. The photoshop file I happen to be placing is about twice the size, so all I see is a giant portion of the still.  Same with Ken burns. I hit crop, and then Ken Burns, and nothing happens. The giant middle of the image just sits there.
Am I missing something? What happened? I did a google search on Ken Burns + 10.1, and aside from a new feature, I see nothing about the basic functionality having changed.
I'm completely stuck and can't edit anything without this.
    Help!

You need to select the clip and have the vertical white ponter over the clip for the red and green boxes to appear.
You can use the Scale slider in the Transform section of the video effects to reduce the size of the image to fit the window.
    Geoff.

  • Ken Burns for slide shows?

Why isn't there a Ken Burns affect for slide shows?  This should have been in Lightroom 3!

    You're right.

  • What happend to "just for you" in the iTunes Store?

This may be a stupid question...but I just downloaded the update (iTunes 9) and can't seam to figure out how to find the "Just For You" catagory. It used the Genius info from my library to find new music that I may enjoy. I LOVE that feture and purchase a good bit of my music that way. I'm sure it has to be there....if not iTunes will slow my pruchase rate big time.

I answered the question myself not one minute after I posted. I was looking from the "Home" page of the Store...once I clicked on the "music" tab..there it was...maybe this was on the homepage before?

  • Space to burn-I'm Burning for you!

How does the MB allotment work when burning to CD-r? I try to keep it under 700mb as I did with transferred music but it asks for more disks as it only allows around 80mb per disc?. Am I just figgering it wrong? The discs say 700 MB no decimal, What's the difference between a CD track and an Apple Mp3?
Also does anyone else have the same problem with bad disks on XP machines?, sometimes I'm lucky to get 5 out of 10 that will work when burning. When I do a windows format on some through vista they will work at times, the office depot sale discs are performing better than the gold memorex tonight! My recycle box is full of gold circular trash yes...it ***** But what can you do?? Thanks

An audio CD (just audio) is time limited to about 70 minutes. That applies for discs you want played in a regular CD player. Data CD's or MP3 cd's can carry up to 700 mb of songs. Audio CD's and MP3's are two different beasts and their capacities are recorded differently

  • Ken Burns Effect  - select "outside" the image

I have some photos that are too tight and need to zoom out more. I am okay with having black areas.
Is there a way to select the crop square beyond the border of the images?

There is no way to do this within iMovie. You will need to use a photo editor such as photoshop to add the black space. You can do this with iPhoto, using an Automator action "Pad Photos".

  • How long did it take to download for you on the Macbook pro?  Mine's only at 1.38 GB and been going for 3 hours.

On a very slow wifi connection at my University, but I'm just wondering for a rough estimate.

what is your advertised download rate from your ISP?
when it completes downloading, Do not install right away!
before you install, make sure you have a time machine copy of your Lion setup saved to an external source. This will be useful.
then you should go the Disk Utility and select the Disk Drive that has Lion on it, Verify and Repair your disk and permissions and then go to applications folder and right click the installer app for ml.
Find a file called InstallESD.dmg and save a copy of it to your computer. This will save you the trouble of having to install it from mas again, should you have to reinstall Mountain Lion or install it on another computer.

  • Similar To Ken Burns - But it looks like only the subject is being zoomed in and the background is staying where it is?

    Hi there
Obviously I dont know the correct term for this otherwise I'd google it, but I see this effect more and more on "Making Of" special features.
It makes it look like a person, or obejct is moving (in towards the camera/screen) within a static image.
Does anyone know what this is called or how to do it in FCPX?

    Luis Sequeira1 wrote:
If I understand what you are saying, this involves a little preparation.
For greater control, I would use Motion for this, but is not really hard to do (or at least simulate) in FCP X.
You'd want to use software like Photoshop or similar (Photoshop Elements is more than adequate - or, if the foreground is clearly contrasted to the background, even the "Instant Alpha" feature from Preview might do it).
The purpose of this preparation step is to create a version of the foreground image (let's say, a person), cutting the background (i.e. leaving only the person against a transparent background).
    In FCP X,
add the background to your main storyline and add the foreground above it, as a connected clip. Now you can do anything to the foregound (like, for example, applying Ken Burns to it), leaving the background intact.
Note that this effect would be more dramatic in Motion, using a 3D group, to give a feeling of the person standing out. This kind of effect is referred to as 2.5D, as we're trying to simulate the third dimension (depth) by pulling apart two 2D images (the foreground and the background).
Ahh, this sounds something like what I'm after. I will have a look at it. Thanks

  • Idvd not capturing the ken burns or full picture view.

I am making a memorial video and have ken burns that are acutallly cutting out the focused object rather than zooming. I tried to burn standard and widescreen and nothing is correcting. Please advise

Q: ken burns that are acutallly cutting out the focused object rather than zooming.
A: Did you manually set / adjust the Zoom while using Ken Burns effect? (see links below to see how to perform this). Also apple's tutorials are worth watching for iPhoto, iMovie, and iDvd if you haven't yet done so.

  • Fix for Jaggies and Ripples in Ken Burns Photos?

I thought using the Ken Burns effect to render your photos was supposed to be a cure for the jaggies, but I still notice a lot of jaggies and ripples during photo panning and zooming in the finished DVD. Is there a fix for this? Am I overlooking something?
BTW- As recommended, I don't let iMovieHD do the rendering of everything else. I drag the project to iDVD and let it do the job.
One other observation- iMovie08 seems to do a MUCH better job with the Ken Burns effect. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie doesn't seem to be as crisp, and the transitions, effects, etc, in iMovie 08 are more limited. (plus I hate the user interface).

I keep seeing this suggested in thread after thread. However, I'm still a little confused by it. I'm assuming that this suggestion refers to not exporting out or sending to iDVD when FINISHED with iMovie Project.
Because doesn't iMovie do some "rendering" while you're working in it? It "renders" transitions, effects, etc.
I'm assuming that it's just a difference in the context and time of the "rendering" that makes it different, but using the same term confuses me.
If someone could clarify this or explain it in more depth, I would be grateful.

  • I have an older version of imovie.  After I change the photos using the Ken Burns effect and save them, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' to change the zoom, the picture appears black and I can't change the zoom?

I have a five year old version of imovie that generally works fine.  However, when I add a photo using the 'Ken Burns' effect then save the movie, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' the picture appears black and I cannot change the zoom.  Any suggestions?

Have you rendered both iOS 7 and iOS 8 (both of which will work on your iPhone 5) out of the question entirely without trying every possible configuration? The animations can be disabled entirely, if that's the problem. And if the whiter-brighter user interface is the problem, there's reverse-contrast modes that darken everything. You can expose accessibility controls to gain immediate access to these functions to toggle them on and off. I guess my point is you may have decided against upgrading the OS based on an early experience with iOS 7 when Apple has since made changes in later revisions to address some of the usability complaints.
Now, Apple's instructions for downloading older versions of apps is to do so from the Purchased list, not from the app's product page.
    See here:
Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support
Let us know how that works for you.

  • Can I turn off the Ken Burns effect from all stills at once?

I am using iMovie 09.  I am creating a slideshow.  I want to turn off the Ken Burns effect from all stills.  Is there a way to do this in one operation?
    Mary Lou

Yes. Select one still. Open the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool on the middle Toolbar. Set it to FIT (for letterboxing) or to CROP (for it to fill the screen, but cut off the top and bottom). This will turn off Ken Burns.
Now select the photo you just adjusted and EDIT/COPY (or Command-C).
Now click EDIT/SELECT ALL (or Command-A) to select all photos.
Finally, click EDIT/PASTE ADJUSTMENTS/CROP ADJUSTMENTS to apply to all photos.
