Instant "restart message" on boot

Help guys!
My perfect MBP 15" 2.16 suddenly last night during routine email gave me the gray "You need to restart your computer" message.
I haven't had one of these in a VERY LONG time since the early days of using Parallels.
I held down the button and restarted. I get the Apple Logo then instantly I get the same restart message.
I figured, Ok... My disk is blown somehow. Being a smart traveller I carry my install CD with me. So I put that in and restart. I hold down C and it does the same thing.
I wasn't sure if C was correct so I tried it again with Option and this gave me the choice of which startup disk to use. I had: Mac OS X, Windows XP, Installation CD
I tried all three. Mac OS X and Installation CD both give the restart message before anything else happens.
Windows XP appears to boot but during the boot process as it is showing it's little back and forth progress bar it suddenly reboots again.
Any ideas? I'm on a trip and getting this going would be a HUGE thing.
Mark

Ok... This is strange... I rebooted into single user mode, did a file system check, mounted the volume.
I was searching for instructions on how determine what kernel extension was causing the problems. I decided to just reboot.
So I typed reboot at the prompt. It rebooted perfectly and I held down CMD-V and watched the process hoping to catch the offending kernel extension and it rebooted just fine all the way into OS X!!!
Could it be that just shifting the RAM around fixed a crummy connection? Did running the hardware test twice with no errors fix something?
I'm nervous now. It's working but for how long? How do I find the root cause of the problem?
Again, Peter, Thanks for the initial help.

  • Early 08 iMac not booting - You Need to Restart Message

So after lunch today, I touched the shift key to wake up my iMac from sleeping. Screen came up, but it was totally frozen with distorted green digital "crud" in various places in the display. (no other way I know to describe the green stuff, it wasn't consistent lines or anything...just random distortion).
I powered down to restart, and the following message came up http://gallery.me.com/daveoli#100064 advising me I had to restart again. Did so, and same message. Tried the following methods, all resulting in the same message coming up:
Unplugged completed, waited an hour (in case of overheating) and powered-up.
Booted holding D key for h/w test - no test just got same message.
    Booted in safe mode.
    Booted from CD.
I called apple support, and the tech advised me to boot holding down cmd-option-r and then p to reset pram. 3 bongs, and then release....this worked! The mac booted up. First thing I did was connect firewire drive and make a back up. Ran a disk check with disk util and everything was ok. I then started to download the hw util from the mac site...and wham, screen froze again with the green crud.
This time, restarting with the resetting the pram did not work. Nothing gets me to progress beyond that "need to restart" screen. I will call Apple again in the morning...but in the mean time, any one here have any ideas or have seen this issue before?

    That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Disconnect all peripherals, except keyboard and mouse. Reconnect one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
If that's no help, run the Apple Hardware Test, from the separate disc that came with your Mac.

  • Black Restart Message-- happening every few minutes!

A few days ago, I was browsing the web, and a faded gray screen appeared with a restart message. It says something to the effect of "You need to restart your computer. Please hold down the restart button, etc." in about four different languages. So I restart the computer. The first day this started happening, I had to restart my computer 6 times. Then it was okay for a few days. It's been doing it again though-- today, it wouldn't even let me get past the start up window with the Apple on it. My computer would PING then would need to be restarted. I really have no idea what has been going on.
I've tried resetting the PRAM, resetting the Power Manager, updating my software, disconnecting it from the internet, running Virus Scans (which I've done several times)... I even had my friend Neil, a CS major at my school, come take a look at it. I don't know what else to do, and I'm about 100 miles from the nearest Apple Store. Help?

How did the logic board break? thats unfortunate, but atleast it got fixed, right?
i had one myself, it was random last month. I was using XP and it crashed an di did a restart, im assuming i was running too much memory intensive programs and xp couldnt handle it properly, it crashed an di rebooted to xp, then it just restarted at startup and i just let it boot into macosx and then restarted onces more then i got a black screen dialog with restarting options as i checked in About ZThis mac c befor eit restarted on me again i switched the 2x512 inRIser 1 to Riser 2 and vice versaas it was only showing 1gb of ram.
im being spooked by hardware problems, the reason i switched over to MAC, as my last pc had random issues even though i was component enough to know what i was doing. hah

  • I got the "You need to restart" message, and now my macbook won't start up past the blue screen.

I got the "You need to restart" message, and after I restarted it my macbook is stuck on the blue loading screen.

Please try to boot in safe mode. If successful, launch the Console application and look under "System Diagnostic Reports" for the most recent panic log. Select it and post the contents here.

  • Grey restart message when upgrading PowerMac G4 10.1.5 to Tiger

I'm trying to do an erase and install on my aunt's PowerMac G4 to upgrade her 10.1.5 OS to her newly purchased Tiger. The install DVD works fine up until the actual progress bar of the installation.
So far it's made it to 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, and 15 percent complete before freezing and displaying a grey message stating to restart the computer.
Also, several times during that restart, the grey restart message comes up again.
I've tried looking in the firmware updates (not sure if that has anything to do with it) but I couldn't track down if her model of G4 needed one since I'm not familiar with the terms of "Quicksilver" and I'm not sure if it has digital audio, etc.
Is this just a case of a bad install disc? Is there something else I should be checking or updating first?
Any info and help is greatly appreciated,
    -Betsy Tao

  • Frequent restart messages

ever since I put tiger on my Ibook I keep geting restart messages it will work fine sometimes and other times it will do it at it seems random it has done it to me with just surfing the internet using safari with no other apps open a few times it did it to me once when I was sending it files from my g5 via wireless restarted and sent my files just fine and today it had nothing open and it was sleeping and when I came back I saw that stupid restart box again.
you restart and it will be normal again but you never know when it will happen again and it is quite annoying has any one else had this problem or am I the only one or is the little ibook just to old (900 g3 640 m osx tiger 10.4.6) thanks

Sometimes, problems with the hard drive can cause kernel panics. If this is what is happening, some hard disk maintenance may alleviate the problem.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say? If it says "Verified," you should be in good shape, as far as the hard drive is concerned, at least.
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I get "you need to restart" messages!

After upgrading, I've gotten the "you need to restart" messages, forcing me to push down on the Power button once in a while. Sometimes I can use the computer for a whole day without getting it, but sometimes I get it 4-6 times a day. This is usually when I am using Firefox (with multiple saved tabs). I've updated the two plug-ins I have in Firefox, and I've downloaded all the software updates. Here is the error report. Can anyone please help? Thank you!

  • I'm getting "Installer disk not found" message during boot camp 5 and windows 8 install on late 2011 MBP upgraded to Mavericks.

    hello,
    And thank you in advance.
I'm getting "Installer disk not found" message during boot camp 5 and windows 8 install on late 20011 MBP upgraded to OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Any ideas?
I've downloaded the Window support option software and the WindowSetupBox.exe and copied it to the USB drive. I tried to create an iso image from my Windows XP machine but recieved messages that Windows 8.1 could not run on XP.  I've ordered the Windows 8.1 backup media.
    Any way to proceed?
    Thanks  Tim

    download the win 8 iso from here;
    http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/download-windows-8-pro/
then start over. install on to your usb along with the support software.

  • Warning message on boot.

    I have a Netra ct800 running Solaris 5.8 Generic_108528-07.
As the machine is coming up I notice a warning message which reads:
"WARNING: scsb: HSC not initialized or AC not present!"
My question is, what is this message trying to tell me.
Is the a repository of error and warning messages that I can search?
I ruled out AC for the 120v power line. The machine runs on -48 volts in the telco office.
    Thanks.
    Jim

I had been noticing the fast tsc calibration failed message at boot for quite a long time on my old Samsung Q35 which is a BIOS boot netbook with arch running the x86 system. The message has continued to show up through many kernel updates including 3.17.4-1-ARCH.
After doing a bit of research I found a simple solution to getting rid of this warning during boot. In my case I use grub as the bootloader and that is where a workaround is possible.
I edited the following two lines in /etc/default/grub to add in "clocksource=tsc":
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet clocksource=tsc"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="clocksource=tsc"
Then regenerated the grub.cfg file with:
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
After rebooting the machine the tsc calibration warning no longer appears.  Presumably similar workarounds are available for other bootloaders also.
Hope this may help even though I only discovered this workaround 5 months after this thread had its last post!

  • Automatically restart messages stuck in smq2

    Hi,
I am having a problem that messages are getting stuck in the inbound queue and I need to manually restart it.
I have searched on this and have found that RSQIWKEX job can be used for this. I have tried testing it but the messages are still stuck in queue. It is having the status as SYSFAIL. Is it not possible to restart messages having this status?
The error which is there for SYSFAIL is Time Limit exceeded.
Please help me to restart such messages automatically which I am now doing manually.
    Thanks and regards,
    Siji Anup

    Hi ,
Pasting below the content of st22
The program "CL_XMS_PERSIST================CP" has exceeded the maximum
    permitted uninterrrupted
runtime and has therefore been terminated.
The system profile contains the maximum runtime of a program.
When this time limit has been exceeded, the program is terminated
to make way for other users who may be waiting.
In the case of a work area, this means that
      - endless loops (DO, WHILE, ...),
      - database accesses producing an excessively large result set,
      - database accesses without a suitable index (full table scan)
do not block the processing for too long.
The maximum runtime of a program is limited by the system profile
parameter "rdisp/max_wprun_time". The current setting is 1800 seconds. After
       this limit has
been exceeded an attempt is made to interrupt the SQL statement running
or to tell the ABAP processor to interrupt the current program. A
maximum of 60 seconds is then waited. If after this time the program is
still active then the work process is restarted.
    Thanks and regards,
    Siji

  • Error Message at Boot-Up

WRT54GX router with Wireless-G adapter ; I get the following error message at boot - "Query My Ca Information: InfoMyCa.exe - Ordinal Not Found - The ordinal 968 could not be located in the dynamic link library LIBEAY32.dll "
Any help eliminating this message would be appreciated .

Hi Bettybee2, and a warm welcome to the forums!
As for deletion, feel free to switch iDisk Sync off and then toss the disk image. If you see a warning that the file is busy when you try to empty the Trash, log out and back in again and then empty the Trash.

  • Is dodgy firewire connection to blame for 'restart' message.

I have been getting the 'you need to restart your computer...' message in the black box, when uploading some footage to IMovie.
I need to know if it could be a software problem, the actual firewire, or like I think- the following problem:
For a while, 2 of the the pins inside the DV firewire connection point on the camcorder (Panasonic Mini-DV, about 5 years old). have been broken off to about half way. It normally works anyway but this time, after a few minutes, IMovie lost the connection. I took the cable out and put it back in- which normally does the trick, but then got the 'restart' message.
Is my computer just freaking out at the corrupt connection.
Need to know what I need to fix.
    Cheers.

It's very likely that it's your camcorder is at fault. What you're experiencing is a Kernel Panic and most KP's happen because of hardware.
I'm not sure whether or not repairing the connection in a 5yr. old camcorder is feasible due to cost or lack of parts but it might be something to check out.

  • Strange message while booting up.

I get this message while booting and am wondering if anyone knows how to correct the problem.
Not activating Mandatory Access Control now since /sbin/tomoyo-init doesn't exist.
I haven't found any solutions or much explanation of what it is using google.

When I read the message I felt brave enough to try installing this mysterious tomoyo-tools, system boots fine like I didn't have it and it's happened about for a week. I forgot to have installed that.
Today my machine have had strange message and didn't boot, I've tried the fallback and the first time has worked. From fallback I have reinstalled tomoyo-tools, thinking some upgrade could have broken the package.
Well, reboot the machine and system still not booting, neither fallback this time. WTH!
I've used the livecd to move the binary /sbin/tomoyo-init (yes of course I can chroot and pacman -R but moving the binary was enough), booting correctly and pacman -R it.
The last message written was about kernel start etc, and the system stuck.
