Instant Shut-off instead of Sleep Mode

My Mac Pro recently started to instantly shut-off when I want to enter Sleep Mode manually. It also doesn't enter Sleep mode per Energy Saver Preferences any more.
I am a bit at a loss at what could cause this behavior. I have diligently installed all software Apple updates.
Anybody has encounter such problem before and know how to fix it?

I tried just about everything including the SMC Reset. I got a copy of the Service Repair Manual and I performed the following test:
System Reset
Mac Pro (Early 2008) has a system reset switch on the logic board that may be used to restart
the system while it is powered up. This switch can be used to determine if a computer that
won’t consistently boot from a cold start has power supply issues. Follow these steps to reset the
system:
1. With the computer powered up, press the SYS_RST switch located in the upper right-hand
corner of the logic board. To press the switch, use the nylon probe tool (Apple part number
922-5065).
2. If the computer boots after you press the SYS_RST switch, try shutting the computer off and
restarting by pressing the front power button. If the computer restarts when you press the
SYS_RST switch but not from a cold start, the power supply may need to be replaced.

  • Why iMac shuts off when in sleep mode? Using latest System (Yosemite)

Can anyone tell me why my iMac 27", running on the latest system (Yosemite), all of a sudden started shutting off when put in the sleep mode?

    Try resetting the SMC.
Additionally, look at the log files around the time the system shut down.
You might also take it in for testing/diagnosis.

  • IPhone shuts off when in sleep mode

So I am currently on a refurbished iPhone 3g because my other one had some visual issues. Now my problem is everytime i have my iPhone in sleep mode it shuts off after about 20-25 seconds and i can only turn it back on again by holding down the home button and sleep button together. Does anyone know a solution to this problem or had the same problem???
    Thanks, Michael

    Hey SurgeCentral,
Are you using any 3rd-party accessories with the iPhone?
Try syncing and backing up the data on the iPhone, then restore it and set it up as a new phone.

  • IPhone Shutting Off When In Sleep Mode

So, I had a problem with my iphone, and took it to the mac store and got it replaced.
now, my new iphone will completely shut down within minutes of being in sleep mode. it will only stay on in sleep mode when it's connected to power. is there any way to solve this problem without having to go to the mac store again?

    Hi!!
I too have the same problem. I bought the 8GB iphone about 20 days back.
Few days it worked ok, but during this time the battery was getting exhausted within 12-14Hrs. After that, one day it went into trans and stopped working. Now it only works when it is connected to the power otherwise it keeps on displaying the Apple Logo, and of course the mobile net work is disconnected.
Can somebody help me resolving the said issue.

  • Macbook Pro shutting off instead of sleeping

Hi my macbook pro is simply switching off when the battery is low rather than putting it self to sleep (and retaining contents of memory) its just clicking and dying instantly - is this a fault? My battery history as reported by coconut is 22 months old, 457 cycles, 79% capacity

I am having the same problem. This battery is the one that replaced the original when there was a recall (not all that long ago). According to coconut the capacity is only 13%.
Do you know if there's any way to salvage this or will I have to purchase a new one?

  • Touch shuts off when in sleep mode.

*Okay, so I have a 2nd gen. iPod Touch. I purchased a docking station a few months ago, but when I connected my iPod it froze, and I could not restart it for at least ten minutes. Ever since then it has had performance issues, it does not run smoothly, I can't play music out loud through its speaker or it freezes, and whenever I leave with for more than a few seconds in sleep the screen stays black and I have to restart it (which sometimes I can't even do).*
Note: I've reset my iPod and I've restored it as well.

Is your dockingstation labeled "Made for ipod"? If not, maybe your ipod got damaged when you connected it the first time.
When you did the restore, did you set it up "as new ipod"? Restoring from your backup could install corrupt files again if the problem was software related. If you set it up as new ipod and still having problems, the hardware is damaged and your ipod needs service.

  • Macbook Pro turns off instead of sleep mode

    Hello,
I'm having this issue for like 2 weeks now. It's maybe 2 and half years old Macbook Pro, battery has 88% health and 650 cycles (according to iStat Pro). I don't think it's battery issue, Macbook still runs several hours on battery.
I have tried resetting SMC (not sure if it worked, I haven't notice anything unusual like when you reset PRAM) and PRAM with no success.
Also when I turn computer on after it shutdowns like this, date and time are messed up. Could it be problem with "the small bios battery"? Because computer should keep these basic informations even if out of power right?
It's not a major issue, so just asking around.... Do not want to spent money on some costly repairs, would rather buy new notebook eventually (when other issues will come by).
    Thanks
    Davon

There is no "BIOS battery." You have a logic-board fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • After installing Mac OS 10.5.8 my 2005 iMac G5 shuts down instead of sleeping

After install of OS 10.5.8 my iMac G5 - 2005 model, no Intel processor - whenever I choose sleep from the Apple menu or the time-out goes to sleep mode the computer shuts down instead of sleeping. Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Try using Disk Utility t repair your disk
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot and repair permissions from your internal drive.

  • MacBook pro shuts down instead of sleeping while connected to power adapter

    Hi there,
I am currently facing a rather strange issue. My old MacBook pro (about 2 years old) shuts down instead of sleeping but only when it is connected to the power adapter. I mean it goes to sleep mode perfectly well when it works only with the battery. Is it a know issue ? I'm running 10.5.6 and this problem is quite new to me (happened the first time some weeks ago).
Thank you in advance for your answer.

You might try resetting the SMC and see if this helps:

  • IPhone shuts off instead of locking

I hope you fine folks can assist me.
I purchased an iPhone yesterday, and have noticed that whenever the phone locks (automatically or manually) it also turns the phone off. I have to press the power button, and the phone starts up again.
Has anyone experienced this, or has found a way to resolve this?

I just started having this problem yesterday (12 Dec 07), though I've had my iPhone since July. When my iPhone is not plugged in, it shuts off instead of locking. (And yes, I know the difference between locking/"sleeping" and shutting down. In my case, sometimes the power button will not turn the phone back on... I have to do a reset by holding the power and Home buttons simultaneously. I have already tried restoring the software as well within iTunes, and that seemed to help for about an hour, and then, bam, the phone started shutting off again.
I'm taking it to the Apple store today.

  • IMac turns off instead of sleeping

This only recently started occurring, and I cannot correlate it with anything that I might have done.
When I tell my iMac G5 to go to sleep - be it via shortcut, menu, power button, anything - it turns off instead of sleeping. It does not shut down properly, but simply turns off suddenly and completely. Upon rebooting, everything seems to be functioning well.
Did all the usual reboot, fix permissions, and so forth, to no avail. Apple hardware test reports no problems, although it took over an hour to run an extended test.
    Any help would be appreciated.

You haven't done anything, it's a power supply problem or a capacitor problem and you should take it in and have it seen to before it gets any worse. Make sure you have a backup of all your data before you take it in. If it's not an iSight, you can open the back and check the caps to see if they are swollen or leaking. While you're about it, vacuum the fans and the vent slots to see if excessive dust buildup is the problem.

  • How do I set iCal so that my alarms go off when in sleep mode?

I'm pretty sure that I can set iCal to open a program (iTunes) as an alarm while the computer is in sleep mode but I can't find the setting. This morning it didn't go off while in sleep mode.
    Does anyone know how?

I am pretty sure that you can't. You can however use the Energy Saver in System Preferences to wake the computer at a set time, and then your iCal alarm could fire.

  • Why is my computer shutting down instead of sleeping?

My comptuer is shutting down instead of sleeping. I have looked at my preferences a million times and nothing has changed regarding my sleep time or any other options.
I looked at another forum answer and tried resetting the SMU by unplugging the cord and holding the power button. That did not solve my problem. What should my next steps be? Should I reset PRAM? Should I suck it up and deal and bring it into a store? I am covered until October.
    Please help. Thanks!

  • Shuts down instead of sleep

I have tried everything!  I have even restored to factory settings and the problem still exists.  Instead of going to sleep my computer shuts down.  I have checked power options and they look fine however when I change anything in the options it still shuts down instead of sleeps.  I am thinking this must be a windows update issue but don't know which one.  I have tried everything on every forum I found but no luck.  Please help!
    TIA

Not sure what to look for with USB software, I haven't really installed
anything that I know of is there a list of this USB online somewhere? The
laptop was new in August 2014, I got the Windows 8.1 update like the other
person did and it took forever. I think he counted 120 software updates. I
did not count them but it sure took a long time. That was about 3 months
later in November. Ever since then I've had the same problem and have tried
different things to circumvent it. It certainly appears to me that the
Lenovo has a severe bug in wakening from hibernate in 8.1 that was not
there in 8.0. And they should fix it. I'm about ready to throw the darn
thing out. Most of the time it doesn't come back from hibernate, you can
hear the fan run when you open the lid but it does not come up. other times
it does nothing until you press and hold down power. I thought HP was bad.
    Makes me scream Apple!

  • How do you prevent the computer from shutting down when in sleep mode?

How do you prevent the computer from shutting down when in sleep mode and plugged in?

    Thanks tjk.
Those are great suggestions and got me looking in places I had not considered before. Unfortunately, the problem remains. The System Preferences did not have the shut down option activated and there are no parental controls active on the computer.
    Any other suggestions are welcome.
