Instantaneous notebook power usage and battery life.....

How much power do ur notebook use while doing pretty basic day to day activiites like, an open PDF, one office docx, wifi ON and downloading something, a music player minimized and singing, some 10 tabs on chrome and/or mozilla open....???
I use "Batter care" utility to find out my power usage (only when in battery), its like 7.4W to 15Watt or above...I am not sure that's a realiable tool, but  I found it gives an idea of it. Do anybody suggest anything better.,.??
Why I am asking this is that, I did a lot of driver updates lately and am afriand my power consumption have incresed by a few wats(4 or 5W)....Is it really possible..or jst my fear...??
Also, I hope the new Li-Ion based batteries needn't be cycled while using. ie I hope its not necessary to "Charge full->discharge almost completly >charge to max again" while using the devce right..??Does it hurt the battery to be charge from some random X% value to some randon y% only to discharge back to z% and so forth....??
(x!=z!=0, y!=100 :-P)
Also will It hurt if I keep it plugged and uses while its 100% charged ..? (assuming the tempeartures are resonable)

  • Updated to OS 10.7.3; fan runs constantly and battery life dropped to under 2 hours when 100% charged. How do I get back to 10.7.2, I don't have a backup prior to this upgrade. This is a newer Macbook Pro 13", no modifications.

Help! This new version of Lion is making me miserable. The fan runs constantly, the computer is hot and battery life has dropped to under 2 hours on a fully charged battery. I updated yesterday, nothing but misery today. Even running the mail program alone make the fan run like I have everything open. Using Pages, iPhoto, and iTunes simultaneously makes the computer blistering hot.Yesterday, I could use all three without any trouble. Any suggestions to either jettison 10.7.3 or how to fix without any expense? I haven't modified this computer at all, it is as it came from the box in August 2011: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3.

I updated to Lion 10.7.3 and started noticing my fans running on high all the time and my battery would drain 2-3x faster.  I was going to take my computer into an Apple store until I found this thread.  I did the SMC reset by shutting down my computer, plugging it in, and then pushing down shift+control+option while also pushing down the power button.  Nothing happens on the screen and the computer did not turn on.  I then released all the buttons at once after holding them down for 10 seconds.
After that, I simply turned my computer back on and everything seems to be working fine.  The  fans are not blasting anymore.  I have a newer MacBook Pro where I can't access my batteries.  The SMC reset may differ for other types of laptops.

Do Not post stuff about how Airplay doesnt work, because i dont have Apple TV and dont need to hear about it.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • Firmware Upgrade and Battery Life?

Since the firmware upgrade on my Macbook in early February the fan appears to be running at full speed all the time and battery life is crap! Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a fix/workaround available please?

Sounds more like an app stuck processing that shouldn't be....does happen from time to time. Behing hot means it is constantly processing.
    To fix:
    Try a reboot (described below).
Think of it this way, the iPhone is more of a computer than a phone. It suffers from being a new OS and nobody can deny there are not bugs and memory leaks. The longer left running, the more things start to fail or slow down (I have had the iPhone since day one of original phone and I am just speaking from my experience). Thus I equate it to like when Windows95 came out...not sure of your age or if you remember those days...but back then it was a running joke of how many days you can keep Windows 95 running before you had to reboot. I am sorry to say but the iPhone is the same way right now (but getting better with a few hiccups back during the 2.0 release). So for me, I reboot daily when I leave in the morning and take it off the charger. By doing so I rarely see any lag or problems.
    A reset/reboot is:
    Go to Home Screen
    Press and Hold Home Button
Keep holding and press and hold Lock Button
    Keep holding Both
You will see Slide to Turn Off (Don't let go to slide, just keep holding)
The phone will turn off (in time, but screen will look like it has some white lines)
    Keep Holding
When you see the Apple Logo, you can let go.
Turning off via the Slide to Turn off while good and fine to turn off, is more like the Sleep Mode on a computer. Thus any locked up issues in memory remain when you turn back on. A reboot as described is like doing a real Turn off and Turn On on a computer.

  • Satellite M50-164 and Battery life

Battery power only lasts 1 hour tops. Is this normal, laptop only 2 years old.

Only 2 years!!! Sorry buddy but 2 years for mobile computer is long period of time. After 2 years battery can be defective, notebook can be full of dust and so on.
So, after 2 years is normal that battery hasnt so much poweras new one and 1 hour is OK time.
The question is what you do with it: watch DVD move, play a game or just write mails. As you know battery life depends on notebook usage.

  • Question about full cycle charges and battery life

So I've had the new iPad since day 1 and absolutely love it, though recently I've noticed that my battery life doesn't seem to hold up as well as it has in the past. I've done three full cycle charges since getting it however during my latest one I accidently brought along my iPod wall charger and not the one that comes with the iPad. My iPad was fully discharged and I plugged it in assuming that in the 7 hour window I had that it would be fully charged within 5 hours, but this was not the case due to me having the wrong charger. After about 7 hrs of charging it was only at around 60-70% so I had to unplug it, bring it home, then plug it in once more using the correct charger. Probably a fairly obvious question but does this not count as a full cycle charge because I unplugged it? Should I perform another full cycle charge even though this most recent one was not even a week ago. I know you're supposed to completely discharge your battery as few times as possible so it worries me having to do it again so soon.
About battery life, I've noticed lately that my iPad battery seems to be depleting quicker than normal, and was hoping that perhaps this was caused by being overdue for a full-cycle charge which I may have flubbed as seen above. I'm aware of a majority of the little tips and tricks to prolong battery life however I'm not so knowledgeable on the "do's and don'ts" of charging the actual iPad so any information on that would be helpful. I should also note that unfortunately I accidently left by iPad in a hot car for a little over an hour and was tremendously devastated knowing what this can do to the battery, so could this be the main cause for a seemingly weaker battery?
    Thanks for any feedback!

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Location services and battery life

I see this from the Apple site regarding reducing power consumption:
"Minimize use of location services: Applications that actively use location services such as Maps may reduce battery life. To disable location services, go to Settings > General > Location Services or use location services only when needed."
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
I can read this advice two ways:
    1. Turn off Location Services in the Settings when not using Location Services. As long as Location Services is turned on in Settings, you are using more of the battery.
    or
    2. I can leave Location Services on in the Settings without reducing battery life. It is only when I use an application that uses Location Services that battery life is reduced.
    Which is it?

Either one. When you see the white/purple arrow on the top, an application you are using has enabled Location Services for itself. While the app is running in either the foreground or background, LS continues to run until the app is either closed or has been force closed through the multitask bar.
LS only uses battery life when it either picks the GPS or the cellular towers to continuously ping your location. But the LS doesn't use as much power as believed. It's actually a combination of things such as GPS and Internet and Music or GPS, Internet and Camera.
Most people keep the LS running as it does little harm to battery life. Some turn it off or turn off certain apps to protect their privacy as they are broadcasting on a social network their approximate location such as LOOPT to friends that you are in a restaurant.

  • Mail-In Service and Battery Life

I recently sent my computer in to apple to get the superdrive replaced. before i sent it in i had an approximate battery life of one hour while running airport and at full screen brightness with safari, mail and AIM running. immediately after i got the computer back from the service center the battery life had dropped to about 30 mins under the same conditions. was there something at the service center that caused this disruption, and if so, would apple be accountable to replace it?

Hi carocker and Welcome to Discussions.
If your battery was already down to 1 hour it was already on its last legs and replacement was already imminent. I doubt you'll get anywhere with trying to hold Apple accountable. You could try a PMU reset…
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook.
    followed by a full Calibration…
which may improve things a bit.
    Best of luck,
    Adrian

  • Updated new iphone 4s and battery life is poor

Since I upgraded my new iphone 4s the battery life has become really poor. As soon as its unplugged its lost life!
Is this going to be fixed?

Depending on the settings for your social media apps, your usage can very. If, for example, Facebook is checking the status to often, your battery is more likely to be drained. Same for mail and other push/fetch services.
Sometimes it helps to delete the account and set it up again, there have been cases in which those apps got stuck trying to connect to their servers.
If you restored the phone from the latest backup you made, did you reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for at least 10sec, until the Apple logo came back again?

  • Final Cut Pro And Battery Life

    Hello,
I just got my first mac, a 15' macbook pro, and I have a question about battery life.
As I'm a video person, I was wondering how long, relatively, the battery will last while using Final Cut. Is it long enough to warrant getting an external hard drive that draws it's power from the laptop?
I wasn't really sure whether this went here, or in the final cut forums...
    Anyways, thanks a bundle!
    MAT

Maybe, but it's hard to predict as it depends on exactly how the system is being used at any one time (FCP may vary in how much it runs that drive, for instance, depending on what's being done) and how much RAM you have in the system (more RAM may mean less paging to the hard drive and hence longer battery life). I'd suggest you ask in the FCP forum and see if anyone has one of the new MBPs that could give you real-life information.

  • Gingerbread OTA and battery life issue

I received the Gingerbread OTA update. I am still working through testing everything to see if the phone is now the way it should be, but I keep stumbling on 1 issue with the battery life.
Yes my battery is now over a year old of occasional use.
When I first got the gingerbread update I had 100% battery and applied the update.
That day I got over 9 hours straight of MP3 playback over Bluetooth using the stock music player.
I charged the battery to full that night and left it on the charger overnight.
The next day I got 4 hours straight of MP3 playback over Bluetooth using the stock music player.
I charged it up 100% at work and proceeded to get another 4 hours straight.
Since that day I have never seen the 8 hours again.
One interesting note is that in the 4 hour increments the music player will stop when the battery hits the orange low warning. I can switch over to streaming music videos and play for another hour till the battery fully dies.
I have tried to recondition the battery using some information I found.
I have factory reset the phone and updated stock apps only.
I have factory reset the phone and never logged into the market place to keep apps from auto updating.
I have noticed on my factory resets things are different. It wants to erase the SD card. You can do the factory reset without erasing the SD card. I am not sure exactly what the difference is there and why the default is to erase the SD card. Sadly both factory reset are not behaving as the previous one did. Normally after the factory reset the setup wizard would start and help you activate your phone. It seems the new default is to not run that process or I got a bad update on my phone.
I have also noticed as a user here suggested that after the phone reaches 100% charge, even though it is plugged in, the phone seems to switch over to using battery mode draining the battery and never topping it back up since it still plugged in.
Shouldn't a year old battery last longer? Shouldn't I be able to stream music for longer than 9 hours? I don't have the screen on, all interaction is through the Bluetooth headset, doesn't mater if email is on with push mode or totally off and not even activated, no calling, no text messages, and just solely trying to listen music like a mp3 player.
    Suggestions?
Is your Samsung Fascinate Gingerbread OTA doing the same things?

A master reset definetly did not solve the issue for me.
On my last and most recent reset I noticed it did execute the setup wizard like it had done prior to gingerbread. This time I did not configure anything on the phone and just left it sit. I never opened the market either. About an hour later i got tired of no phone and started the wizard on my own so that the phone was at least activated. I did not configure any additinal email accounts just the standard single google account for my phone withthe gmail program.
I charge the battery to 100% with the phone on
Unplug the ac charger from the phone
ask the phone to power down
wait another 2 minutes after the screen goes black and the buttons are no longer lit
plug in the ac charger and it will top up the battery to a full 100% and not the OS 100% that it thinks it should be
Most nights i just leave it off charging to that last 100% since i have seen problems with trickle charging after it reaches 100% int he OS and then starts using the battery the rest of the night!
Next morning unplug the AC charger and ask the phone to boot
I got 8-9 hours playing mp3s streamed over bluetooth, 1 text message in and 1 text message out, but no phone calls and no other activity on the phone. Not bad but i feel it should do better!
I actived 3 exchange email accounts in push mode. I had heard push mode was supposed to be the best battery saver. Well with the included email (not gmail) app my battery went down in less than 4 hours! Today i have forced the email to manual mode instead of push for peak and off peak times. I will see if i get 8-9 hours again.
The rest of the phone is all factory defaults, boring, and pretty much useless. So much for a smart phone being smart and handy. Guess i need to buy about 3 batteries to get through a day and find a way to charge them as i run around throughout the day without ac or a way to charge.

  • Album Art and Battery Life

I am waiting to order the iskin duo for the nano before I buy the nano itself but I was hoping 3 questions could be answered before I make my purchase. Thanks in advance for your help.
    1. I have read here that having and looking at photos on the nano shorten the battery life and eat up memory. I do not plan on placing pictures on my nano - but I do have album art for my songs. Does this eat up memory and use up battery life? If so, I may consider removing the album art.
    2. Under "importing" in my ITunes Preferences I have it set up as "AAC Encoder" and "128 kbps". Is this the best way to have each song take up as little space as possible for the memory? If not, how do I change this after the fact?
    3. I have heard a lot of discussions on where to buy an ipod. Some people feel that the extended warranty with Best Buy is a smart purchase, while some say it isn't worth the money. I have immediate access to buy the ipod online, at an apple store or at Best Buy. Where should I buy one and do you recommend an extended warranty?

    Hello Jaime,
    1. When You Put Pictures or have album art it shouldnt use up the battery power any more, the battery power will decrease the same amount as it does while its turned on.
2.If want to have the songs the smallest without losing sound quality those are the best settings, i use them and i think the imported songs sound awesome.
    3. Best Buy is definately the best play to buy an iPod nano, i have done this and if anything goes wrong they will gladly exchange it or refund your money. I, personally, didnt do with the extended warranty because i wasnt willing to spend 50 bux on it. But if you have no problem with forking out the extra cash i would recommend it because the nanos battery will be eventually have to replaced and if you just send you nano to the apple "place" youll have to pay more than 50 bux, so the Best Buy salesman said...

  • 3G and battery life question

I know the 3G uses much more battery up when surfing etc ... but does anyone know if it also ***** up more battery life when it is just on standby (but with 3G on)?

OK - as my process of elimination continues, I think I have found the first smoking gun.
So, I still have 3G, WIFI, BT and location assistance disabled. I enabled push mail and 50 minutes later, I found that the phone was warm and the battery had lost about 25% of the total battery capacity.
The data xfer was only 4 or 5 MB, so it was not moving a lot of data around.
So I have deleted my dot Mac or should I say Dot Me account and my Yahoo account, only leaving the Exchange account to see if the situation improves. Sadly, it will be a while before I know, since I have to recharge my phone. It was full at 7am, I turned all the power draining functions of at approx 8am (apple care recommendation). I have not been using it - total call time 8 minutes - Total data xfer 4 MB, no games, not internet. Was at about 50% at 3pm, turned push back on and by 3.50pm it was down to approx 25% and at 5pm needs to be recharged.
I will post what I find out.
Assuming turning of yahoo mail account and Mac account fixed the push problem, I will try switching 3G back on. If it did not, I will switch Exchange push off - if that fixes it, I will switch Yahoo and Mac Push back on to see if it is a push problem, or a MS Exchange Push problem.
    Thanks,
    Nick
